Trump Horror, Day 20: Kellyanne Conway Blatantly Violates Key Ethics Rule

Politics • Views: 35,929

Uh oh. Here we are, not even a month into the Trump Horror, and his chief counselor Kellyanne Conway has already violated one of the most important rules of the Office of Government Ethics, by blatantly hyping Ivanka Trump’s line of merchandise on Fox News.

Federal employees are banned from using their public office to endorse products, regulations state.

Conway, speaking to “Fox & Friends” viewers from the White House briefing room, was responding to boycotts of Ivanka Trump merchandise and Nordstrom’s discontinuation of stocking her clothing and shoe lines, which the retailer said was in response to low sales and which the president assailed as unfair.

I’m going to give it a free commercial here,” Conway said of the president’s daughter’s merchandise brand. “Go buy it today.

How will Bannon/Trump respond? How about take the OGE website offline.

Yeah, that’ll do.

Every aspect of this regime is corrupt to the core. The GOP doesn’t care, because they’re ticking off every item on their wish list to return the nation to the 50s. Whether it’s the 1950s or the 1750s, who knows. And at the rate they’re going, the Romans might be too enlightened for them too.

re: #13 Dr. Matt

Considering that the Trump tax plan has essentially turned into a House GOP tax plan since the election (moving towards similar rates, adjustments, etc.), that the Congress doesn’t know what the heck Trump’s talking about again shows he doesn’t know or care about process, or coordination with the other branches of government.

Policy by diktat is what he does. That’s not how government works, and with good reason.

But even if he were to announce the GOP tax plan, it’s still a giveaway to the rich and shifts the burdens to everyone else. Rich see huge tax breaks (even bigger once you factor in the estate tax repeal) and everyone else pays for it in the form of reduced services, worse infrastructure, and gutting the safety net.

It’s the quadrifecta of Ayn Rand fuck you I got mine conservative BS. And all those people who think that they’re going to benefit from Trump will find themselves screwed again. And again.

It’s going to take Trump turning on a Republican (donor) in some major way. Once that happens, and the Congressional GOP realizes that it can’t ride the alligator, then, maybe, the move for impeachment.

You know what, though, given McConnell’s actions lately… I’m not entirely sure they want to be in the majority, at least with a Republican president. It’s easy and kind of fun to be the majority when the other party holds the White House, but now they’re actually responsible for shit. They have nobody to blame but themselves if things go to shit. Maybe they wouldn’t really mind losing 3-4 seats in the Senate?

The GOP, which has no problem wrapping itself in the flag, using servicemembers as props, and thinks they’re the patriotic ones, all while standing in front of Confederate flags (on purpose), continues to show that they are heartless and spineless bastards who don’t care about anyone but their own craven agenda, the consequences be damned.

Trump’s Muslim ban continues ensnaring US citizens, despite claims that it doesn’t do anything of the sort. This is yet more evidence that this is unconstitutional as applied.

KILLEEN, Texas (AP) — They say everything is bigger in Texas. It’s now safe to say that applies to bail.

Bell County Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown set Antonio Marquis Willis’ bond last week at a whopping $4 billion in the Dec. 22 killing of another man at a home in Killeen, about 55 miles north of Austin.

County sheriff’s Deputy Chief Chuck Cox said he’s never heard of such a high bond, the Temple Daily Telegram reported (bit.ly ). The highest amount he had previously seen was $1 million.

Willis’ lawyer, Billy Ray Hall Jr., said he’s confident the amount will be lowered when Hall makes the request to a state district judge. Hall said he wasn’t certain it would be lowered to the point where Willis could afford to post the amount and leave jail until his next court hearing.

I don’t disagree. Nor would he, from what I could tell by reading his posts. I think Democrats have assumed that people would understand why things like ACA, raising the minimum wage, workplace protections, etc. would be good for them (or even TPP, which may have been an improvement over anything Trump will have to offer). We just haven’t done a good job of going to the places—now I’m getting into anymouse territory—where people can make those connections. I know that racism is a part of it, but it’s not all of it. We’re losing at the local level, and that’s the real scary thing.

No — that’s not the only thing he did. He spoke sympathetically to the WWC of their loss in jobs and promised that he would fix it and get their jobs back. On Bill Maher, Toni Lahren repeated how Trump was going to bring back the coal miner jobs. That’s what they want to hear — not the truth — but a fable. And when Trump fails to do this, he will figure out a way to blame others.

As was stated in the King tweet about responding to Trump someone posted in the last thread, it’s important to attach any and all failures not to Trump specifically but to Republicans as a group. They must be made to own him at every turn.

Reptiles tend to come in various color “morphs.” Orange alligator births might not even be extremely rare, but most may be eaten or have prey escape too often because they can’t hide as well.

I used to breed beautiful snakes that would have a very hard time in the wild because of their unusual colors and patterns.

We have to find a way to talk our issues in soundbite form. Anyhow, we’ll see what happens. The losing on a local level is troubling though.

Republicans want to starve your children. (food stamps, school lunches)
They want to kill your grandmother (ACA)
They want to poison your dog (abolish the USDA)
They want to poison you (abolish the FDA)
They want you to die in a fiery plane wreck (freeze on hiring at the FDA of inspectors)
They want your veterans to die (privatise the VA)
They send your sons and daughters on worthless suicide missions (military)
They want you to pay their taxes (redistribution to the 1%)

Sound bites by their nature have to be over-the-top. Like Pres. Johnson and his pig-copulating quip, you have to get the GOP to get in there and deny those things.

When you’re explaining, you’re losing. Hillary Clinton had detailed plans for all those things. The GOP had “Benghazi, E-mail, Clinton crime family.”

Unless and until the Democrats are willing to play by the same rules the Republicans are, they will lose, because they are explaining.

The overwhelming majority of voters do not play inside baseball in politics.

If a voter asks “why do you think they are trying to kill grandma” then explain why (and still keep it simple).

The GOP will stick with the bumper sticker politics because they work.

Trump thinks airlines pay too many fees and are over regulated.

Seriously. Does he not realize that a significant portion of the taxes paid goes to fund the FAA which keeps the ATC going (and is still under-funded and behind in getting NEXGEN radar/ATC going nationally, which would significantly reduce delays/congestion at airports).

It also makes sure airlines are adhering to scheduled maintenance, not cutting corners, and otherwise putting lives in danger all for the sake of profit.

Back when I worked for the armored car company, ca. 1977, one of our stops was an area sheriff’s office, where we picked up cash from bail money, fees, fines, etc. The daily take was usually in the low tens of thousands. One day, though, they had over a million twenty-two thousand dollars in cash for us. There was a small bag with the usual loot, then a big one full of bundled hundreds. They explained that a local wheel had been arrested for murdering his wife, the judge had set bail at a million dollars and insisted on cash, and the guy had actually produced it. Getting a million in cash from your bank is no simple task, especially if you can’t make arrangements in person, but it can be done for important customers.

Bumper sticker slogans work awesome for the GOP because they’re simple-minded, meant to evoke emotion in the person hearing them. “Yeah, I want America to be great again!” If you have to think about it, chances are it’s not gonna stick with you. So when people heard “I’m With Her,” the emotional connection worked for Democrats who already supported Hillary. For everybody else, at best it evoked either negative memories of the GOP’s witch hunts against her or their own negative emotions over Bernie’s loss.

re: #181 Hecuba’s daughter

There is a nineteenth century principle “Bad money drives out good”. I fear that the real problem is that “Bad ideas drive out good”.

Something to do with the lowest common denominator

re: #185 Targetpractice

Bumper sticker slogans work awesome for the GOP because they’re simple-minded, meant to evoke emotion in the person hearing them. “Yeah, I want America to be great again!” If you have to think about it, chances are it’s not gonna stick with you. So when people heard “I’m With Her,” the emotional connection worked for Democrats who already supported Hillary. For everybody else, at best it evoked either negative memories of the GOP’s witch hunts against her or their own negative emotions over Bernie’s loss.

I didn’t much care for the “I’m With Her” slogan: It sounded too cultish to me (never mind Trump has an actual cult). Not all slogans work.

The idea of a slogan is its supposed to make you ask further questions or think about what the slogan means. “I’m With Her” didn’t even offer the potential of “Yes We Can”: It is simply a declarative statement. “Well, I’m Not” is the counter, and that’s that.

The above is a chart of Trump’s approval rating with less smoothing, and the ridiculous Rassmussen taken out (they show Trump with approvals north of 50%!!). With this adjustment, Trump’s approval sits at 43.3%, which is a shade worse than mediocre (Obama spent a good deal of time during his presidency in the low 40’s), but considering what a hot mess of a human being Trump is - let alone a president - it’s disturbing to me that his approvals are north of 4.3%.

Sigh. I can’t get over the number of people who supported Trump because he said he’d do X and Y, and now they’re surprised he’s doing Y and not just X. (Assuming he gets around to doing X.)

Yup. I wrote to my paper when the bill was first filed about killing people in secrecy. They didn’t run my letter.

No one sells sodium thiopental in the USA any more: the company that made it didn’t want to be known as Dr. Death.

The secrecy bill is not about that though: It’s about being to use any ol’ thing and you won’t know (and can’t find out) what they did.

It is regrettable the voters voted to overturn the repeal of the death penalty by referendum.
