In Which Donald Trump Blatantly Lies About an Easily Checked New York Times Article
One of the amazing and disgusting things about Donald Trump is that he doesn’t just lie constantly; he lies about things that are very easily checked and proven false. Today’s case in point: the following tweet about a New York Times article reporting that he caved in and dropped his idiotic opposition to the “One China” policy in a call to President Xi Jinping of China:
The failing @nytimes does major FAKE NEWS China story saying “Mr.Xi has not spoken to Mr. Trump since Nov.14.” We spoke at length yesterday!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 10, 2017
And here’s the New York Times article he’s ranting about: Trump Tells Xi Jinping U.S. Will Honor ‘One China’ Policy.
The very first sentence reports that Trump spoke to Xi on Thursday evening.
WASHINGTON — President Trump told President Xi Jinping of China on Thursday evening that the United States would honor the “One China” policy, reversing his earlier expressions of doubt about the longtime diplomatic understanding and removing a major source of tension between the United States and China since shortly after he was elected.
And to lie about what the article says, Trump changed one word of the sentence he quoted in his tweet, from “had” to “has,” completely reversing the meaning of the sentence.
The concession was clearly designed to put an end to an extended chill in the relationship between China and the United States. Mr. Xi, stung by Mr. Trump’s unorthodox telephone call with the president of Taiwan in December and his subsequent assertion that the United States might no longer abide by the One China policy, had not spoken to Mr. Trump since Nov. 14, the week after he was elected.
Yes, folks, it’s true. We have a pathologically dishonest sociopath in the White House.
It appears Trump may have read an earlier version of the article, published before his call with Mr. Xi, that did contain the quote in his tweet — because at that point, it was accurate. The Times has since updated the article, but Trump hasn’t deleted or corrected his tweet.
One of the authors of the NYT story responds:

We reported accurately that Xi wouldn’t talk to POTUS without One China pledge. Updated story when he did just that https://t.co/3OqlUHi0GU
