I am late to the party but saw the post about Laura Ingraham (a few articles ago) telling police to arrest the protesters keeping DeVos out of the DC school (which I had to share with my Mother - former teacher - who is attempting to keep her spirits high). Based on what is going on at Twitter (not an entirely reliable source but lots of people commenting), they are sweeping up just about anyone they want: with an outstanding warrant, those on deportation orders, those who are not, those who are citizens and green card holders.

It appears to be very equitable - if equality means you can be deported.

In Phoenix, the mother taken from her children yesterday that sparked protests is now in Mexico City.

I can see arresting people with outstanding arrest warrants or under deportation orders, but not everyone in the house. That’s seriously fucked up.

Every year, twice a year (usually in late May and again in August) the Foreigners Police here do major sweeps in Prague; apartment blocks, workplaces, bars, etc., where foreigners are known to congregate. If they find anyone here illegally, BOOM, off they go. I was working in a call center one summer that employed almost exclusively foreigners and they came in on one of their sweeps. Fortunately, there were no problems for anyone. I’ve even been stopped in the street by the Foreigners Police during a sweep - had to show them my permanent residence card.

Here, from time to time, it really is, “Your papers, please”.

And I’ll go here as well: As bang up of a job Olbermann is doing, and as big pieces of shit both Trump and the GOP are, it’s still Olbermann. He has a “Shoot first, ask questions later” habit that gets him trouble occasionally. I want to make sure this is actually happening.

That said, if these raids are happening, I’m sure Camden and Philly are in crosshairs and we’ll be hearing about them around here soon.

Michael Weiss, a Daily Beast senior editor who also serves as editor-in-chief of The Interpreter, told The Huffington Post that RFE/RL’s management made the decision to stop funding the magazine last fall, before Donald Trump’s election victory.

While RFE/RL stopped paying Weiss’ three-person team for The Interpreter at the end of December, following the conclusion of a one-year contract, the news organization agreed to continue paying them for work on polygraph.info, a new fact-checking and propaganda debunking site launched with Voice of America.

Weiss was recently informed that his team would not get another contract for 2017 for work on Polygraph, but agreed to a short-term deal through the end of February. After that, the Interpreter staff can potentially freelance for the new site.

Remember that Public Policy Polling question about the Bowling Green Massacre that had fifty-one percent of Trump supporters considering the fictional massacre grounds for an immigration ban?

Huffington Post reminds folk (as I have here) that most people don’t play inside baseball with politics and therefore simply hearing about the “massacre” without context (such as the question) means they might agree:

That makes a splashy headline, and it’s catnip for liberals who want to laugh at how stupid they think Trump supporters are. But it’s not good polling practice and should not be reported without substantial caveats about how the question was written and likely perceived by respondents.

First, most of us who read polls live in a world focused on media and politics, and we should get out of that mindset. The average American doesn’t spend hours of their day glued to Twitter and cable networks watching all the latest developments in Washington, D.C. Most are busy living their lives, caring for families, working non-political jobs or all of the above.

In that frame of mind, how many Americans have probably heard of the Bowling Green Massacre, or know it’s a fake thing Kellyanne Conway made up last week? We don’t know. The poll didn’t ask that question. The question wasn’t even about whether people believed the fictional massacre happened ― that was simply asserted as a fact.

My grandmother (born in Pennsylvania to legal immigrants from Slovakia) lost her American citizenship when she married my grandfather (a Romani refugee from Hungary) in 1918. (There was some really freaky “we’re askeert of ‘certain’ immigrants” law put in place at the time.)

This bill amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to consider a person born in the United States “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States for citizenship at birth purposes if the person is born in the United States of parents, one of whom is: (1) a U.S. citizen or national, (2) a lawful permanent resident alien whose residence is in the United States, or (3) an alien performing active service in the U.S. Armed Forces.

This Act shall not be construed to affect the citizenship or nationality status of any person born before the date of its enactment.

The last line is the caveat that would keep me from being deported to Poland. Presumably it could be stripped from the bill at any time (which would then make me subject to it), or the bill might die in committee. It has twenty co-sponsors.

No, it isn’t. Who told you this and why do you believe it? If overturning a Supreme Court decision was as simple as passing a bill into law then Roe v. Wade would’ve been history a long time ago. Wong Kim Ark clarifies the 14th Amendment, Congress can’t undo that without passing another Amendment to the Constitution and getting enough States to ratify it.

Numerous bills have been advanced to overturn Wong Kim Ark and have all failed due to lack of votes, not trying (see Wikipedia for that).

Wong Kim Ark clarifies the XIV Amendment - but a bill directly challenging it can go to the conservative Supreme Court. No amendment required.

That may be true, but you aren’t required to provide it on demand without just cause. The Fourth Amendment guarantees that right:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Notice that it does not limit this right to citizens, but to everyone in the United States.

That would be the same CBP that was gathering up people’s green cards on commercial aircraft, based presumably on flight manifests.

I am guessing here, but it would appear that the various agencies involved in this are banking on people not knowing their rights under the law.

The bill doesn’t seek to override the XIV Amendment. It seeks to overrule a Supreme Court decision (see above). That is legal.

And the SCOTUS will take it up again.

How? Unless he’s flat out released into the wild, sounds like a win for Snowden. He’s taking advantage of a corrupt and compromised federal government and will never get his comeuppance.

That’s entirely possible, but, remember, Snowden’s currently where he is at the pleasure of the Russian government and his usefulness to Putin has pretty much expired, hence why Putin seems willing to give him up to us now. The Trump administration could then let him go or they could instruct the DoJ to throw the book at him is a “show of strength”.

But I still think it’s going to be hard to find good juris prudence to overturn Wong Kim Ark (that is, for Roberts and Kennedy. Alito and Thomas has show no respect for precedence).
