Feel-Good Video Clip of the Day: Florida GOP Official Booed After Moronic ‘Death Panel’ Comment

Politics • Views: 39,810

YouTube

At a healthcare reform town hall meeting in New Port Richey, Florida, Republican official Bill Akins tries to foist off the creaky old “death panel” lie yet again, on an audience of senior citizens — and the crowd erupts in boos and jeers. Then this mendacious white-haired clown proceeds to call them “children” over and over.

It’s a hopeful sign that people are getting completely fed up with Republican lies.

re: #5 Backwoods_Sleuth

It’s kinda hard to really credit Jason Chaffetz’s comments - even if he weren’t just a general putz - according to easily-accessible date, Utah’s Third Congressional District (as I pointed out in the last thread) is rated as R+25, gave Trump a solid plurality in the last elections, and re-elected Rep. Chaffetz by nearly a 3-1 margin. Hardly a hotbed of Democrats, I’d guess: maybe he ought to give a little thought as to why folks are pissed at the Trump Admin., Congress in general, and him in particular?*

*Here’s a hint, Jason: it ain’t for the pay…..

Calhoun is also the namesake of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, which has also become controversial as of late. Reverting it to its original Native American name has been proposed, but Lake Hopper wouldn’t be bad, either…

Smoothest renaming ever:

The county was originally named after William Rufus King who was Vice President when the Washington Territory was created in 1853. In 1986, a motion was introduced to change the namesake to Martin Luther King Jr.[3] No public votes or hearings were taken on the change.[4]

On February 24, 1986, the King County Council passed Council Motion 6461 five votes to four setting forth the historical basis for the renaming of King County in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.[5] Because only the state can charter counties, this change was not made official until April 19, 2005, when the Governor signed Senate Bill 5332 into law.

The County Council submitted a vote to the public on February 27, 2006 to change the county’s logo from a royal crown to an image of King.[6] On March 12, 2007, the new logo was unveiled.[7]

That’s the county Seattle is in.

Yes, the new one is we’re being bused in or paid.

These Republican politicians don’t understand we were always here. They’ve lived in a secure bubble in districts that were safely Republican. They cannot process it.

Thing is, I’m not sure how many of US in Republican areas knew we were here. We’ve all found each other now. I have been so thrilled to see all of us.

For that, I thank you, Donald Trump and Republicans. I have a lot of new friends!

It’s not about what’s true. It’s about saying a thing that voids the conversation. The basic premise of the current GOP is that anybody that disagrees with them isn’t really American. They will always work backwards from that assumption. They’ll make it true by smashing other perspectives.

It’s like prison-yard epistemology.

Public Service Announcement:

No illnesses have been reported, but Sargento says “out of an abundance of caution” the company is recalling 6.84-ounce packages of Sargento Ultra Thin Sliced Longhorn Colby with sell-by dates of April 12 and May 10, 2017, and 8-ounce packages of Sargento Chef Blends Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese with sell-by dates of June 14 and July 12, 2017.

- Sargento Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese, 12 oz., UPC 4610000108 with “Sell By” dates of “12JUN17B”, “09JUL17B” and “10JUL17B”

He doesn’t get that he became expendable on Nov 9, 2016. I’ve always believed he’ was turned during his time in Geneva and that he really never understood just how in deep the water he’s in is. Ayep, Snowden doesn’t quite get that Russia kept him around for the PR points. That he was not an uber-l33t hax0r who breached deep into America’s intel network, he was a low-level scrub who stole a bunch of passwords and grabbed up thousands of files without any idea what most of them actually said. Odds are that 85-90% of the useful intel the Russian got out of him was on the laptops he claimed to be carrying. Whatever human intel he carried (i.e. knowledge of the inner workings) they either got from him by playing to his ego or through indirect sources (hidden mics, “friends,” etc).

He ceased being of any value to the FSB ages ago, so throwing him back to Trump as a “gift” would be a major coup for their asset in the White House and little else.

The discussion of small town highway banditry reminds me:

How many of you know what “rule skoo dish-crick” might mean?

That is what a conservative west Texas politician will call a “rural school district.”

They don’t talk that way because the cow colleges they drank their way through don’t teach English, they do, but because their hinterland upper-crusty upbringing has convinced them that’s how ordinary people talk. They don’t, not usually at any rate, but rather than rebelling at this abject display of contempt, the rank-and-file yokel voters eat it up.

Make Palm Beach Great Again!

Palm Beach businesses stung by cost of hosting Trump’s weekend retreat

Restrictions on air and road travel when the president is at his Mar-a-Lago resort threaten ‘to grind our economy to a halt’, says one hotel owner

Trump’s four-day visit last weekend caused more than $250,000 in lost revenue from fuel sales and landing fees

Palm Beach Aircraft Services estimates losses could reach $2m a year and several private plane owners have already switched to other airports

“When [the president’s] here for three days we lose at least $30,000. Our small businesses can’t survive, they’ll either shut down or leave,”

The Palm Beach sheriff’s office… overtime bill alone topped $250,000 for the then president-elect’s short Thanksgiving sojourn.

This is how stupid Trump voters are.

California Farmers Backed Trump, but Now Fear Losing Field Workers

MERCED, Calif. — Jeff Marchini and others in the Central Valley here bet their farms on the election of Donald J. Trump. His message of reducing regulations and taxes appealed to this Republican stronghold, one of Mr. Trump’s strongest bases of support in the state.

As for his promises about cracking down on illegal immigrants, many assumed Mr. Trump’s pledges were mostly just talk. But two weeks into his administration, Mr. Trump has signed executive orders that have upended the country’s immigration laws. Now farmers here are deeply alarmed about what the new policies could mean for their workers, most of whom are unauthorized, and the businesses that depend on them.

“Everything’s coming so quickly,” Mr. Marchini said. “We’re not loading people into buses or deporting them, that’s not happening yet.” As he looked out over a crew of workers bent over as they rifled through muddy leaves to find purple heads of radicchio, he said that as a businessman, Mr. Trump would know that farmers had invested millions of dollars into produce that is growing right now, and that not being able to pick and sell those crops would represent huge losses for the state economy. “I’m confident that he can grasp the magnitude and the anxiety of what’s happening now.”

Why are these farmers not in jail for employing illegal laborers? Are there no laws?

He got played. It will be years before we get a sense of how much he got played.

He’s lying to himself at this point. His entire ego trip is built on a foundation of himself as a selfless “whistleblower” who saw something wrong and brought it to the world’s attention. If he acknowledges that the Russians turned his ass and have been playing him for years, then his actions cease being “noble” and end up being those of an egotistical prick. So he’ll keep lying to himself and everybody else about how his actions were totally for our benefit and not to stroke his ego.

Very interesting week we just went through.

The Courts decision on “the Immigration Ban”, the stuff on Flynn and Kellyanne and these videos popping up of Republican politicians getting their heads handed to them by the people in their districts or states.

And, continued protests all the time in the streets of American cities.

Good stuff.

I guess for just over three weeks time Trump and the Republicans are meeting a kickback somewhat equal in intensity to Trump’s wanting to sprint through Executive Order signings and trying to act all law and order tough.

Strangely, if we didn’t have to live through it, this would be a great time in history to study. Wonder what it will be called?

Yes, the new one is we’re being bused in or paid.

These Republican politicians don’t understand we were always here. They’ve lived in a secure bubble in districts that were safely Republican. They cannot process it.

Thing is, I’m not sure how many of US in Republican areas knew we were here. We’ve all found each other now. I have been so thrilled to see all of us.

For that, I thank you, Donald Trump and Republicans. I have a lot of new friends!

Wasn’t that “outside agitators” argument used against Civil Rights Activists in the American South of the 1950s/60s? Rightwingers need to come up with something new. Or just face the fact that people who don’t like their ideas are going to exercise their rights to protest.

The FBI spent years, particularly at the orders of J. Edgar himself, investigating the civil rights movement as a “communist plot.” It certainly didn’t help that the Soviets used the hypocrisy between what America was preaching abroad and what it was practicing at home as a club to use against capitalism.

I like that. Works on multiple levels. It was not only the masses being conned by Trump, but also all the rubes who were conned by the Bros into believing that a Trump presidency would be “better” than a Clinton one or that both parties were equally bad so not voting as a “protest” would work to “send a message.”

California Farmers Backed Trump, but Now Fear Losing Field Workers

Why are these farmers not in jail for employing illegal laborers? Are there no laws?

What a shocker! ( not!) Agricultural enterprises in California, like everywhere else, have relied on low-cost labor to keep costs low, profits up ( and not irrelevantly, keeping food prices down on a market level) - and relying on a fairly casual attitude towards checking personal documentation has been SOP for decades - if not longer.

They burned some churches and put the blame,
On decent southern people’s names,
To set our colored people aflame.
And maybe some of our boys got hot,

They’re not going to sit quietly and accept the pushback without response much longer. Chaffetz’s response to his town hall shows that they view the resistance to their agenda as completely illegitimate and false.

Viewing himself as a ‘law & order’ president, Trump (and his ego) isn’t going to be able to take it much longer before he lashes out with more than tweets. Crazy Sheriff Clarke has already made clear how he views anti-Trump protests and there’s probably a whole hell of a lot of cops who share his views and will happily follow Trump’s directives to go after the opposition.

I think things are going to get a lot uglier before they get better.

I think that’s a fair prediction, that eventually Trump or one of his lackeys at the state/local level are going to assume that they can get away with a crackdown and the truncheons will come out. And while his base will cheer because they think it means all them “dirty hippies” will finally get their comeuppance, you can only crack so many skulls and throw so many preachers and reporters in jail before the backlash begins.

But this all assumes that there are no terrorist attacks between now and whenever the crackdown begins. ISIS would probably love nothing better now than to add fuel to the authoritarian fire with a random attack that Trump could use to claim that his enemies have made it possible for terrorists to strike.

OK, death panels.

I went to my doctor this week. New one, just like the last two times I went to the doctor (ah, rural healthcare). So I asked her whether she would agree with the last two about the possibility of Second Impact Syndrome making it a good idea for me to give up cycling. She did agree. She also said that if I did decide to ride again, I may want to be sure my DNR and DNI are up to date. I know about DNR, but had to ask about DNI. It’s Do Not Intubate. I was intubated when I was hit by the car, so saying Do Not doesn’t seem like a good idea, so riding a bike is not a good idea.

So on a more personal note, this just happened to come spilling out of my keyboard and into my Facebook profile early this morning. Perhaps it was the hangover, perhaps it was me reading a headline saying that Drumpf was considering rewriting his stupid immigration ban EO, perhaps I just ran completely out of fucks to give sometime this week; judge for yourselves.

This is a post I’ve been trying to avoid making; it’s obvious to most of my friends that I don’t talk politics much. The interesting thing about the Declaration of Independence is that it doesn’t say “all American citizens are created equal”, it says “all men”. It says that these same “all men” are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Furthermore, when we look to the Constitution of the United States, you will note that it refers to People and not Citizens, except in a few cases, such as the right to vote and the right to bear arms. The Preamble to the Constitution begins, “We, the People of the United States.” That includes anyone living in, or visiting this country - however temporarily, however illegally. The point I’m driving at is this: Our country has been designed from the beginning to be a place of special greatness; a place of welcoming, a safe harbor among the tyrannies of Europe and Asia and South America. I get the need to feel secure from our enemies, but I cannot and will not support policies that throw the baby out with the bathwater. I oppose President Trump in his crusade to bar Muslim immigrants (and in a number of other policies, too, but that may be a post for a later time). However much a liberal that makes me, I’m sorry to disappoint, but I apologize for nothing.

I guess I’m out of the closet now. Woopsy.

There was an article a couple of weeks ago by a Golf Digest (I think) writer who got an ear full from Trump after he visited and reviewed the course. Was Trump angry about the review? No. He was pissed that the guy didn’t mention his score. The writer pushed back: ‘it was a friendly game; we had do-overs and gave short putts; you can’t honestly report that kind of score even if it mattered.’ Trump fumed even more. Kept attacking him.

And one of the big ‘conservative’ complaints about public healthcare is that healthcare will be ‘rationed’.

News for ya, people. Before the ACA American healthcare was rationed. It had to be or else the insurance companies wouldn’t have made as big a profit. Furthermore about 25% of the costs of healthcare was the huge bureaucracy that rationed the healthcare so insurance companies could keep huge profits.

The calm before the storm.

(I really hope I’m wrong on this, I really do)

That’s not a bad prediction, because what we’re seeing right now is an attempt by Trump to nationalize the oppression of the South in the 60s. But there are more of us prepared to fight back, and, unlike the 60s, it’s already being televised. I’m not saying it’ll be easy, but I don’t think as many things are going to go Trump’s way as he thinks.

I have a feeling it’s going to be a lot worse than the 60’s.

For one, it’s being televised by a media that has an obsessive need to summon the magic balance fairy. I see no reason to believe that won’t continue when the police decide enough free speech is enough.

Second, the police are a hell of a lot more trigger happy today than they were back then. I think it all too likely that instead of truncheons and fire hoses, we’ll be seeing assault rifles and shotguns. The courts have already shown them that they can get away with shooting unarmed suspects under the merest imaginary shred of threat; an active/rowdy protest is going to be open season.

The police used guns in the 60s. They also turned their heads when civilians took the law into their own hands.

As for the media, what made them turn their cameras to the south in the 60s: Blacks showing up at lunch counters and marching, and white people being killed.

One of the people on my CERT team is a Republican and a teacher. My wife noticed that on the teacher’s facebook page, she put up a comment blasting Cruz and Cornyn for voting for Devos. And then followed that up with a post about going to a Celebrating Reagan meeting with local Republicans. It’s odd, but Democrats don’t have a “worshiping a caricature of our favorite president” event, and we don’t need one.

From the linked article:

…Nick Ciletti, a 28-year old Marine veteran who mixed pills for a pharmacy, noted bitterly that a 17-year old working as a chef made more money.

“I voted for Obama the first time, I didn’t vote in 2012, and then I voted for Trump,” he said as servers at the Gridiron Pub dished out free chicken wings. Clinton had lost him, among other reasons, over her seeming readiness to restrict gun rights.

In a dozen conversations, Sawyer County voters who had abandoned Democrats in 2016 said they did not necessarily embrace the Republican platform. They viewed the Democratic Party, especially its 2016 iteration, as lost and elitist. Or, they personally could not stand Clinton.

Yes, police used guns back then. But the police of then aren’t the police of now. Back then, they needed to call in the National Guard for heavy equipment and major firepower. Now, they’re kitted out like soldiers themselves complete with armored vehicles and they often have the mindset to match.

As far as the media and their obsessive need for balance, look at the coverage in Ferguson. The media paid just as much, if not more, attention to the sporadic acts of looting and arson by the protesters than they did to covering and pointing out the hugely disproportionate use of force by the police. The only thing that’s changed in the years since then is that the media in general has become even more deferential to authority (though, in fairness, some segments of the media do appear to be regaining their integrity as of late).

And I’m not convinced that the racial aspect is going to make a difference this time. Back then there was a large enough segment of the center that hated the violence more than the idea of civil rights.

With as polarized as politics is today, and the large numbers of those on the right who view their opposition as something to be exterminated, I’m worried there isn’t a center large enough to tip the balance between power and protesters.

To be fair, some of them did seem like the genuine “economic anxiety” types (though of course they’re too propagandized/misinformed to realize who’s really responsible for their plight)

These are indeed the types of voters who (hypothetically, because we can never know for sure) would’ve voted Bernie. Then again, those voters might not have been enough to compensate for loss of other groups Bernie had trouble with (e.g. POC).

Seems to me the ideal Dem candidate would be a fresh new face who can merge old-school WWC populism with a pro-diversity message. I refuse to believe the two are mutually exclusive by default. After all, MLK’s most famous march was for economic justice as well.

You’re in a deeply red part of TX - can you think of any message that could successfully peel away enough voters to make a difference? Or are they hopeless “GOP uber alles” types who’d excuse anything up to and including a full-blown kleptocracy?

I’m in one of the poorest counties in Eastern Kentucky. More than a third of the people here will lose their insurance (their actual health care that they never had before Kynect) if ACA is repealed.

They are already freaking out.

Had a conversation with a moderate friend of mine today who professed that she believed the Republicans intended for President Pence all along. She agreed that he would be a disaster for domestic policy, but I conceded that at least he wouldn’t be quite as bad with regard to foreign diplomacy. To which I quipped, “It’s a sad day when Mike Pence is considered an upgrade to anybody.”

I’m not entirely sure. I’ve been trying to think of a message you could say that would make Republicans, especially the poor ones, go “aha, that’s right, it’s the Democrats that care,” but I really don’t know of one that would work. I pretty much think they’ll have to figure it out themselves.

There are two things we really want: To show them that Republicans don’t care, and that Democrats do. The first one will I think only happen if what they hear on Fox does not match what the pain they’re experiencing to the point they turn the channel off. Not only that, what the poor would have to understand is that what is happening to them could not be accomplished by minorities. That’s actually fairly easy in places where whites interact with blacks and Latinos, but not in places where the black population is very tiny, which is why a woman in Kentucky can hope her health care doesn’t go away and complain about blacks getting something for free.

The second part is that they think their choice is between Republicans and the party that eats baby parts for a Satanic ritual. I’m not sure how you get through that. Once again, it really comes down to them deciding they want things to be different, and they also have to change.

And believe me, I’m still working on an attempt. I’ve been thinking about writing something that touches on race, economics, religion, and how they work in our country. But I think that, even if I were to write something truly clarifying, they would have to first be willing to accept the message.

But, there are some people around me that I would consider reasonable Republicans that would not vote Democrat, even if they think there should be more spending on education, health care, and even support contraception and paying for child care. Well, one thing at a time - if you can’t make them pro-Dem, at least make them anti-GOP by demonstrating as much as you can how the GOP’s “values” and actions don’t support want they want in the least. You might not get them to vote Dem, but if they’re disillusioned enough, they might just stay home and not vote.

For example, immigration officials soon after 1900 gave new arrivals IQ tests — in English — to sort out who should enter and who should not.

The Bell Curve book has two parts. The first, which focuses on the scientific and statistical side of intelligence and IQ testing is not bad. The second, in which the authors editorialize on what all that means to society and race, is by contrast totally around the bend. Racists refer to the entire book as a scientific work, but it is not. Rage Furby, for one, has declared the book changed his life. The verdict is still out whether it was for the better.

re: #327 retired cynic

I’m just trying to figure out what happened with him.

He actually explained it himself many times over the years: the number one thing he loves to do is bust balls.

It’s possible (but…uh…not super likely) people in his real life find that to be an endearing quality. Online, for a number of different reasons, it is not always appreciated. When someone doesn’t know you as well as you think they do, when they can’t get the visual and tone of voice cues, etc., when someone just isn’t in the mood…it fucking sucks.

There was a time a couple of years ago when the guy came in here describing some serious and scary life problems. He received nothing but 100% concern, sympathy, and brotherly love. One might think that experience would have shifted his thinking a bit. I honestly believe this is in like the 1% of internet communities in terms of the way people treat each other. It’s why I am proud to be a paying member.

I guess at the end of the day, he was not able to shift his thinking.

I remember, and I know he was always on the R side of this blog, but all of a sudden he seems to be more … aggressive? Beats me.

By the way, I have absolutely no regrets about exposing those fraudulent 60 Minutes documents. I didn’t do it to help Bush get elected, I did it because they were fucking fakes. I’d do it again with no hesitation whatsoever.

There are some people who just radiate untrustworthiness, and DT and Michael Flynn are two of them. Some are on the left. But so many just seem to be stationed on the right. Brrrr.

I don’t even know how you come up with something like that. What motivates someone to get up in the morning and say, “Hey, I’m gonna introduce a pointlessly cruel law for no reason whatsoever! Just for the sake of cruelty! Ha Ha Ha Haaa!” You have to include the laughter at the end for the sake of Evil.

I don’t see what kind of motivation there is for that. I know cartoon supervillainy doesn’t really exist, but what other explanation is there for something that pointlessly sadistic?

Because if you’re trying to enforce ‘natural’ birth control, you have to enforce ‘natural’ babies too. Duh//

That SNL Fatal Attraction parody a few minutes ago was high-larious. The rest of show will no doubt be as funny as a rock resting on top of a stone, i.e., the last thirty years.

They spend all their f..ing time legislating against women and their bodies while ensuring that their policies do nothing to help any living souls. And people keep voting for this sh!t - there is so much dumb and stupid out there - the mind never stops boggling.

Why is legislating around childbirth (or control of childbirth) a never ending event for people elected to GOVERN. I can only surmise their thoughts are 100% centered on sex, every hour of every day.

Women and children. Think of the mind it would take to let a grade school student get to the checkout of a school cafeteria, and then take their food away because their parent was late with a few dollars. It absolutely blows my mind. They can’t be fully human!

I will NEVER forgive that liar for being one of the ringleaders in the scam that torpedoed Hillary’s health care proposal in 1993. He repeatedly published those lies in The New Republic(an) rag.

Thanks to him and those other liars my parents went broke and when Dad died, Wells Fargo seized his house to cover the debts that were racked up over their medical bills.

Oh, and I also remember how Andy slobbered all over “The Bell Curve” and the racist slime that he pushed in TNR.

re: #354 Charles Johnson

Charles, that was the SECOND time Mom and Dad were screwed. Remember when the original Prescription Drug assistance was passed under Reagan? Mom and Dad were actually getting help with their prescriptions UNTIL the backlash forced Congress to repeal that assistance in 1989. I still remember the crowd of affluent elderly chasing Rostenkowski out of a town hall and they chased him to his car.

People SHOULDN’T forget that this was the original genesis of the movement that killed Hillarycare.

re: #232 Interesting Times

You’re in a deeply red part of TX - can you think of any message that could successfully peel away enough voters to make a difference? Or are they hopeless “GOP uber alles” types who’d excuse anything up to and including a full-blown kleptocracy?

re: #247 Belafon

In this deeply red part of NE, the message is more of a local one: Jane Kleeb is looking to run against Adrian Smith. Mrs. Kleeb is deeply respected here for the fight she mounted against the Keystone XL Pipeline on behalf of everyone in the state courts (hunters, ranchers, farmers, conservatives, liberals, &c).

She also gained valuable organisational skills for that fight, winning in state court showing the GOP Unicameral violated the state constitution by giving the state governor the authority to approve a route. Right now, the pipeline is a dead letter in this state. The only way any route could be approved would be if the Federal government somehow took state authority away for that, and doing that would go over like a lead balloon with the voters.

Democrats winning in deeply red areas of the country involves identifying the local issues that matter to the voters and making sure they understand who it is that is putting the screws to them.

You probably won’t get a whole lot of Republicans to cross lines and vote for Democrats, but you’ll get a few, and in a highly gerrymandered district like mine that makes the difference. Moreover, if the Republican voter decides that “they’re both the same” and simply chooses to stay home rather than vote, that works against the GOP as well.
