It’s kinda hard to really credit Jason Chaffetz’s comments - even if he weren’t just a general putz - according to easily-accessible date, Utah’s Third Congressional District (as I pointed out in the last thread) is rated as R+25, gave Trump a solid plurality in the last elections, and re-elected Rep. Chaffetz by nearly a 3-1 margin. Hardly a hotbed of Democrats, I’d guess: maybe he ought to give a little thought as to why folks are pissed at the Trump Admin., Congress in general, and him in particular?*

The county was originally named after William Rufus King who was Vice President when the Washington Territory was created in 1853. In 1986, a motion was introduced to change the namesake to Martin Luther King Jr.[3] No public votes or hearings were taken on the change.[4]

On February 24, 1986, the King County Council passed Council Motion 6461 five votes to four setting forth the historical basis for the renaming of King County in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.[5] Because only the state can charter counties, this change was not made official until April 19, 2005, when the Governor signed Senate Bill 5332 into law.

The County Council submitted a vote to the public on February 27, 2006 to change the county’s logo from a royal crown to an image of King.[6] On March 12, 2007, the new logo was unveiled.[7]

Ayep, Snowden doesn’t quite get that Russia kept him around for the PR points. That he was not an uber-l33t hax0r who breached deep into America’s intel network, he was a low-level scrub who stole a bunch of passwords and grabbed up thousands of files without any idea what most of them actually said. Odds are that 85-90% of the useful intel the Russian got out of him was on the laptops he claimed to be carrying. Whatever human intel he carried (i.e. knowledge of the inner workings) they either got from him by playing to his ego or through indirect sources (hidden mics, “friends,” etc).

He ceased being of any value to the FSB ages ago, so throwing him back to Trump as a “gift” would be a major coup for their asset in the White House and little else.

I think that all money that is gained through police actions, such as tickets or asset claims, ought to be donated to charity. Police budgets should not depend on money taken in through police actions, only by taxes collected.

I guess for just over three weeks time Trump and the Republicans are meeting a kickback somewhat equal in intensity to Trump’s wanting to sprint through Executive Order signings and trying to act all law and order tough.

Strangely, if we didn’t have to live through it, this would be a great time in history to study. Wonder what it will be called?

They’re not going to sit quietly and accept the pushback without response much longer. Chaffetz’s response to his town hall shows that they view the resistance to their agenda as completely illegitimate and false.

Crazy Sheriff Clarke has already made clear how he views anti-Trump protests and there’s probably a whole hell of a lot of cops who share his views and will happily follow Trump’s directives to go after the opposition.

I think that’s a fair prediction, that eventually Trump or one of his lackeys at the state/local level are going to assume that they can get away with a crackdown and the truncheons will come out. And while his base will cheer because they think it means all them “dirty hippies” will finally get their comeuppance, you can only crack so many skulls and throw so many preachers and reporters in jail before the backlash begins.

But this all assumes that there are no terrorist attacks between now and whenever the crackdown begins. ISIS would probably love nothing better now than to add fuel to the authoritarian fire with a random attack that Trump could use to claim that his enemies have made it possible for terrorists to strike.

Viewing himself as a ‘law & order’ president, Trump (and his ego) isn’t going to be able to take it much longer before he lashes out with more than tweets. Crazy Sheriff Clarke has already made clear how he views anti-Trump protests and there’s probably a whole hell of a lot of cops who share his views and will happily follow Trump’s directives to go after the opposition.

I think things are going to get a lot uglier before they get better.

OK, death panels.

I went to my doctor this week. New one, just like the last two times I went to the doctor (ah, rural healthcare). So I asked her whether she would agree with the last two about the possibility of Second Impact Syndrome making it a good idea for me to give up cycling. She did agree. She also said that if I did decide to ride again, I may want to be sure my DNR and DNI are up to date. I know about DNR, but had to ask about DNI. It’s Do Not Intubate. I was intubated when I was hit by the car, so saying Do Not doesn’t seem like a good idea, so riding a bike is not a good idea.

This is a post I’ve been trying to avoid making; it’s obvious to most of my friends that I don’t talk politics much. The interesting thing about the Declaration of Independence is that it doesn’t say “all American citizens are created equal”, it says “all men”. It says that these same “all men” are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Furthermore, when we look to the Constitution of the United States, you will note that it refers to People and not Citizens, except in a few cases, such as the right to vote and the right to bear arms. The Preamble to the Constitution begins, “We, the People of the United States.” That includes anyone living in, or visiting this country - however temporarily, however illegally. The point I’m driving at is this: Our country has been designed from the beginning to be a place of special greatness; a place of welcoming, a safe harbor among the tyrannies of Europe and Asia and South America. I get the need to feel secure from our enemies, but I cannot and will not support policies that throw the baby out with the bathwater. I oppose President Trump in his crusade to bar Muslim immigrants (and in a number of other policies, too, but that may be a post for a later time). However much a liberal that makes me, I’m sorry to disappoint, but I apologize for nothing.

Yes, police used guns back then. But the police of then aren’t the police of now. Back then, they needed to call in the National Guard for heavy equipment and major firepower. Now, they’re kitted out like soldiers themselves complete with armored vehicles and they often have the mindset to match.

As far as the media and their obsessive need for balance, look at the coverage in Ferguson. The media paid just as much, if not more, attention to the sporadic acts of looting and arson by the protesters than they did to covering and pointing out the hugely disproportionate use of force by the police. The only thing that’s changed in the years since then is that the media in general has become even more deferential to authority (though, in fairness, some segments of the media do appear to be regaining their integrity as of late).

And I’m not convinced that the racial aspect is going to make a difference this time. Back then there was a large enough segment of the center that hated the violence more than the idea of civil rights.

With as polarized as politics is today, and the large numbers of those on the right who view their opposition as something to be exterminated, I’m worried there isn’t a center large enough to tip the balance between power and protesters.

To be fair, some of them did seem like the genuine “economic anxiety” types (though of course they’re too propagandized/misinformed to realize who’s really responsible for their plight)

These are indeed the types of voters who (hypothetically, because we can never know for sure) would’ve voted Bernie. Then again, those voters might not have been enough to compensate for loss of other groups Bernie had trouble with (e.g. POC).

Seems to me the ideal Dem candidate would be a fresh new face who can merge old-school WWC populism with a pro-diversity message. I refuse to believe the two are mutually exclusive by default. After all, MLK’s most famous march was for economic justice as well.

Had a conversation with a moderate friend of mine today who professed that she believed the Republicans intended for President Pence all along. She agreed that he would be a disaster for domestic policy, but I conceded that at least he wouldn’t be quite as bad with regard to foreign diplomacy. To which I quipped, “It’s a sad day when Mike Pence is considered an upgrade to anybody.”

I’m not entirely sure. I’ve been trying to think of a message you could say that would make Republicans, especially the poor ones, go “aha, that’s right, it’s the Democrats that care,” but I really don’t know of one that would work. I pretty much think they’ll have to figure it out themselves.

There are two things we really want: To show them that Republicans don’t care, and that Democrats do. The first one will I think only happen if what they hear on Fox does not match what the pain they’re experiencing to the point they turn the channel off. Not only that, what the poor would have to understand is that what is happening to them could not be accomplished by minorities. That’s actually fairly easy in places where whites interact with blacks and Latinos, but not in places where the black population is very tiny, which is why a woman in Kentucky can hope her health care doesn’t go away and complain about blacks getting something for free.

The second part is that they think their choice is between Republicans and the party that eats baby parts for a Satanic ritual. I’m not sure how you get through that. Once again, it really comes down to them deciding they want things to be different, and they also have to change.

And believe me, I’m still working on an attempt. I’ve been thinking about writing something that touches on race, economics, religion, and how they work in our country. But I think that, even if I were to write something truly clarifying, they would have to first be willing to accept the message.

Well, one thing at a time - if you can’t make them pro-Dem, at least make them anti-GOP by demonstrating as much as you can how the GOP’s “values” and actions don’t support want they want in the least. You might not get them to vote Dem, but if they’re disillusioned enough, they might just stay home and not vote.

For example, immigration officials soon after 1900 gave new arrivals IQ tests — in English — to sort out who should enter and who should not.

The Bell Curve book has two parts. The first, which focuses on the scientific and statistical side of intelligence and IQ testing is not bad. The second, in which the authors editorialize on what all that means to society and race, is by contrast totally around the bend. Racists refer to the entire book as a scientific work, but it is not. Rage Furby, for one, has declared the book changed his life. The verdict is still out whether it was for the better.

He actually explained it himself many times over the years: the number one thing he loves to do is bust balls.

It’s possible (but…uh…not super likely) people in his real life find that to be an endearing quality. Online, for a number of different reasons, it is not always appreciated. When someone doesn’t know you as well as you think they do, when they can’t get the visual and tone of voice cues, etc., when someone just isn’t in the mood…it fucking sucks.

There was a time a couple of years ago when the guy came in here describing some serious and scary life problems. He received nothing but 100% concern, sympathy, and brotherly love. One might think that experience would have shifted his thinking a bit. I honestly believe this is in like the 1% of internet communities in terms of the way people treat each other. It’s why I am proud to be a paying member.

I guess at the end of the day, he was not able to shift his thinking.

I don’t even know how you come up with something like that. What motivates someone to get up in the morning and say, “Hey, I’m gonna introduce a pointlessly cruel law for no reason whatsoever! They spend all their f..ing time legislating against women and their bodies while ensuring that their policies do nothing to help any living souls. And people keep voting for this sh!t - there is so much dumb and stupid out there - the mind never stops boggling.

Why is legislating around childbirth (or control of childbirth) a never ending event for people elected to GOVERN. I can only surmise their thoughts are 100% centered on sex, every hour of every day.

Charles, that was the SECOND time Mom and Dad were screwed. Remember when the original Prescription Drug assistance was passed under Reagan? Mom and Dad were actually getting help with their prescriptions UNTIL the backlash forced Congress to repeal that assistance in 1989. I still remember the crowd of affluent elderly chasing Rostenkowski out of a town hall and they chased him to his car.

People SHOULDN’T forget that this was the original genesis of the movement that killed Hillarycare.

In this deeply red part of NE, the message is more of a local one: Jane Kleeb is looking to run against Adrian Smith. Mrs. Kleeb is deeply respected here for the fight she mounted against the Keystone XL Pipeline on behalf of everyone in the state courts (hunters, ranchers, farmers, conservatives, liberals, &c).

She also gained valuable organisational skills for that fight, winning in state court showing the GOP Unicameral violated the state constitution by giving the state governor the authority to approve a route. Right now, the pipeline is a dead letter in this state. The only way any route could be approved would be if the Federal government somehow took state authority away for that, and doing that would go over like a lead balloon with the voters.

Democrats winning in deeply red areas of the country involves identifying the local issues that matter to the voters and making sure they understand who it is that is putting the screws to them.

You probably won’t get a whole lot of Republicans to cross lines and vote for Democrats, but you’ll get a few, and in a highly gerrymandered district like mine that makes the difference. Moreover, if the Republican voter decides that “they’re both the same” and simply chooses to stay home rather than vote, that works against the GOP as well.
