Watched yet another old time nuclear apocalypse movie on Amazon, “Panic in Year Zero” from 1962. This one is about a suburban Los Angeles family surviving in the hills after LA is nuked. It stars Ray Milland and Frankie Avalon as father and son good guys with some properly insolent hoodlums as bad guys. Milland also directed. It’s obviously a cheap production and has an overblown jazzy score but the acting is first rate, as is Milland’s direction. The story itself is surprisingly frank and a little raw for the period, with suburban dad Milland and well-scrubbed teen Avalon turning ruthless when the family’s survival is threatened.
The mom is portrayed by Jean Hagen and Frankie’s airhead sister by the little known Mary Mitchel. Richard Balalyan, later a widely seen character actor, is the only one of the hoodlums with any kind of reputation.
Mom nags dad about his harshness, but eventually toughens up. The womens’ roles are more than a little sexist, as usual for the time, but at least they don’t faint and scream every time something goes wrong. On the whole it’s a good period piece and a good test of Milland’s formidible acting and directorial talents.

From the previous thread:

re: #356 Anymouse

In this deeply red part of NE, the message is more of a local one: Jane Kleeb is looking to run against Adrian Smith. Mrs. Kleeb is deeply respected here for the fight she mounted against the Keystone XL Pipeline on behalf of everyone in the state courts (hunters, ranchers, farmers, conservatives, liberals, &c).

She also gained valuable organisational skills for that fight, winning in state court showing the GOP Unicameral violated the state constitution by giving the state governor the authority to approve a route. Right now, the pipeline is a dead letter in this state. The only way any route could be approved would be if the Federal government somehow took state authority away for that, and doing that would go over like a lead balloon with the voters.

Democrats winning in deeply red areas of the country involves identifying the local issues that matter to the voters and making sure they understand who it is that is putting the screws to them.

You probably won’t get a whole lot of Republicans to cross lines and vote for Democrats, but you’ll get a few, and in a highly gerrymandered district like mine that makes the difference. Moreover, if the Republican voter decides that “they’re both the same” and simply chooses to stay home rather than vote, that works against the GOP as well.

The “if the Jews had guns” crowd are Nazis themselves (or at least Nazi apologists). They don’t care about Jews or even government overreach, they care about guns.

The idea is to dilute Democratic voting strength in NE1 (Lincoln) and NE2 (Omaha and South Sioux City).

The scientific study refers to research by Satoshi Kanazawa, a controversial evolutionary psychologist.

In 2005 Mr Kanazawa published an article titled ‘Violent men have more sons’, and three years later another titled ‘Why do some battered women stay?’, in which he stated women “may have been selected to tolerate a certain level of nonlethal violence in their mates”.

He has also stated African countries suffer from poverty due to “low IQs”, and that black women are “objectively less attractive”.

Nebraska did that way back in 2010 - very forward looking state here.

newsweek.com

The Nebraska Legislature has passed a law barring abortions after 20 weeks because of the possibility that the fetus could feel pain. The law, approved by the state legislature earlier today and expected to be signed by Gov. Dave Heineman, is a landmark in that it directly challenges one of the key tenets of Roe v. Wade: the viability standard.

Ah, the old classic, “scientific research” which isn’t, but is an ideological opinion piece disguised as such. It’s the bane of people who do science and aren’t prepared for such. It can take years before they discover they have a tainted source or tainted sources, and the longer before the discover that, the more pissed off at the perpetrators of the fraud they tend to be once they find out.

There are a lot of science fields plagued by tainted sources: evolutionary biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, nearly every scientific field has been plagued with tainted sources or opinions presented as fact.

Other fields can be tainted as well (sociology, history, economics, &c).

1. Read Russian.
2. Say the source material doesn’t say what the article says.
3. The article is propaganda by MI6.

The article you quoted in your 96 comment …based on reader comments at that article, they were saying what I quoted above:

— 2 (several times)
— 3 (once, but I found it funny)
— 1 was my observation

Did you read the source (in Russian)? I’m curious what it actually says.

Looking at this Amazon Echo doohickey on Amazon since I’m logged in now anyway.

I can’t figure out why $179 is supposed to make my life better. I’m sure it would make Amazon’s life better.

Traffic reports? What traffic? Sports scores? Not interested. Plays music? So does my phonograph and radio. Provides answers using Alexa? So does Google. Control my home equipment with the Internet of Things? I would have to replace everything so I can become part of someone’s botnet or have my refrigerator tracked (he’s out of kielbasa).

The question is whether the security check is accessed through the simple punch-in from our site.

Re Alexa itself: It’s never really off as long as it has power, and you don’t know who wrote the code. Wife has both Alexa and the hockey puck. They’ll be buried with her if she goes first.

Anymouse  Feb 12, 2017 • 5:45:12am

I read that blurb on the Echo again. Aside from that blurb desperately needing a copyeditor (360 degree omnidirectional sound?), it literally provides nothing that is a service in this area. (The only thing it can provide is voice control of your music. Not worth $179. My stereo has a remote.)

There is no Uber here. That requires cell service. Businesses do not have Websites or Internet services (and most of them don’t take credit).

Guess that is some sort of citified thing.

I’ve been catching up on the news since my return to Chyyynnna! The ICE raids are just fuckin’ scary! I know people who could be caught up in those raids. Heck, I’ve even taught a few. Combine those raids with the CBP bullshit at airports, and all immigrants, green-card holders and even tourists now have to worry if they will be next.

It’s all for show, of course. Trump has to act the tough guy now that those three “activist judges” of the 9th Circuit rained on his EO parade. One way or another, he’s going to make sure all those immigrants are going to be shipped out, no matter the cost — human or financial.

I don’t blame those folks trudging through the freezing cold to escape to Canada. I think even Mexico would take people in at this point, if only to show the world what a cold-hearted, evil government the USA has now.

There are a lot of science fields plagued by tainted sources: evolutionary biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, nearly every scientific field has been plagued with tainted sources or opinions presented as fact.

Other fields can be tainted as well (sociology, history, economics, &c).

The benefit of peer review and the scientific method is those frauds, opinions, and falsehoods can be weeded out (hopefully before they cause damage, like Andrew Wakefield).

Problem is that the point of divergence might be as far back as 40 years for one of the fields I’m talking about, and part of those opinion pieces presented as research have been specifically aimed at short-circuiting the scientific method and tainting the peers in the field.

I don’t want to be the perpetrators or even associated with them once it dawns on researchers they have four decades worth of research which is basically worthless and may have exacerbated an already very difficult problem.

Greets and saluts from the resistance. It’s another day on the line, and another day of revelations that Bannon/Trump are exactly who they have always been - ideologues, racists, xenophobes and bigots, just what their supporters wanted.

Never mind that he’s completely unqualified to do any of the heavy lifting that comprises governing. He cons people with empty slogans, and within days, 30-50% of his supporters think his BS is true.

Entertainment as politics. But with deadly real world consequences.

Tonight, entertainers - musicians - are likely to stand against Trump’s bigotry and hate, and right wingers will bitch and moan that they’re musicians whose opinions shouldn’t count or be heard because they’re musicians.

Yeah, just like Trump, amirite? Oh wait, some voices are heard, mostly because the GOP wants to hear angry white guys pushing lies that support their worldview - that minorities and rights that protect them need to be rolled back to restore their own rights (namely supremacy over others).

America’s railroad companies have had a long, sad history of safety (non)compliance. It took the concerted efforts of Congress — despite the lobbying efforts of the railroads — to require all trains to have the Westinghouse air brakes installed in the 19th century. I realize that major train accidents in the USA are not common, but most have been caused by faulty equipment, poorly maintained trackage, and/or lack of automated safety equipment — all things which cost money and companies can postpone dealing with indefinitely.

Nor does ending child marriage illegally infringe on religious rights. The Supreme Court has upheld laws that incidentally forbid an act required by religion, if the laws do not specifically target religious practice. Besides, most religions tend to describe marriage as an important union between two willing partners. That sounds nothing like child marriage, which is often forced and which has close to a 70 percent chance of ending in divorce. “There was a concern that we would be offending certain cultures within our society,” said New York Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, who introduced an unsuccessful bill last year to end child marriage in her state. “So instead of seeing this as an abuse of young women, [some legislators] were seeing this as something we needed to protect for certain cultures.”

Please tell me when the U.S. was a White country though? When the Pilgrims met the Indigenous peoples? When African slaves were imported to work the fields? When Chinese men were imported to work out West?

Just like the claim that the U.S. is a Christian country is a myth, so is claiming that it is or ever was a White country.

“Western values” is the dog-whistle for “white people values.”

In fact, the “American way of life” is what has attracted all types of people here for 200 years or more. Recent immigrants are just as patriotic as descendants of colonists, but bigots don’t want to admit that.

I spent part of my holiday zipping along the Chinese and Japanese bullet trains at 180 mph. I trust their safety standards more than Amtrak’s.

My wife got to drive the Japanese high-speed rail simulator at the California Railroad Museum this summer. She thought it was a first-class rush.

He is one of Trump’s “Nazi Steves.”

The only high-speed rail I ever rode was when my wife and I were in Europe, from Berlin to Gdansk.

The Polish part of the route was slower, but still quite fast (about 120 km/h)

Our ancestors were alarmed about trains going 25 mph, fearing the human body could not withstand such speeds.

Despite its designation by Trump as his “winter White House,” other events continue to be held on the property. On Saturday, as Trump and Abe spoke about North Korea, a wedding reception was in full swing in a building less than 100 yards away connected by a walkway and canopy.

washingtonpost.com

Well, Abe spoke about North Korea. The yam (probably not understanding a single thing about it) merely gave a general pep talk:

“I just want everybody to understand and fully know that the United States of America stands behind Japan, its great ally, 100 percent.”

Trump made no mention of South Korea, another U.S. ally in the region, nor did he explicitly condemn North Korea’s action.

I remember when Reagan signed the Gramm-Latta budget cuts that restricted the Social Security Death Benefit of $255. When that cut took effect in 1982, we had a BIG spike in calls from people who couldn’t afford to cremate their loved ones.

We were ordered to refer them to private charities…then they called back when the charities turned them down asking how they were going to bury or cremate their loved ones…all we could say is that we’re sorry that we couldn’t provide any other assistance and they were on their own…

That law targets all couples who seek fertility treatment, not just gays and lebsians.

It goes back to when IVF was first developed. There were people who objected to it on religious grounds, and I think that’s what is going on here again.

And what are the consequences of this law? A child born to a mother and a loving parent is denied inheritance (or inheritance is made more difficult), and legal status becomes more uncertain because they will not be considered legitimate.

We’re back to fighting the same battles settled decades ago, but the GOP wants to regress. This is the creeping Christian sharia. It’s not Muslim law we have to worry about, but Christian fanatics here at home pushing their theology on everyone else - using local, state, and federal law to administer their theology and beliefs.

Ahistorical crapulence, and do I detect a whiff of fake quote?

Lincoln led the Union against insurrectionists who fought to preserve slavery. The parties have since flipped in their positions; since the CRA, it is the GOP that seeks to restore Jim Crow and the way of things that segregationists and bigots look wistfully upon.

It is the Democratic party that is fighting to protect minority rights across the nation.

It is GOPers who dance around protecting the flag of insurrectionists - those who fought to protect the institution of slavery.

That’s what the GOP stands for today.

Lincoln would get medieval on the modern GOP for peverting his ideals, and what the Union troops fought and died to reclaim and preserve.

This is kind of a sweet story for a sunday. 6-year old Bill Nye fan has a plan to raise money for science by selling bow-ties at the March for Science. Via Balloon Juice.

The idea for raising money for science came to Isaac one day in the car. He was disappointed that he didn’t get to participate in the Women’s March on St. Louis in January, so his parents told him that he could participate in the March for Science, which is scheduled in St. Louis for April 22 (other details are TBD).

As soon as he knew about the march, Isaac wanted to raise money for science. He plans to collect bow ties and sell them at the march. Instead of a lemonade stand, he plans to have a bow tie stand.

Isaac’s dad, Mark, posted his son’s idea on Reddit, and there was such a great response that they created a Facebook page to better manage the interest. So far, Isaac has collected 50 bow ties.

“I want to collect 1,000 bow ties,” he tells me while still working to untangle the slinky.

Lincoln would get medieval on the modern GOP for peverting his ideals, and what the Union troops fought and died to reclaim and preserve.

Arguably, the Goldwater campaign was the beginning of the end.

Alongside passage of the Civil Rights Act, Goldwater normalized William F Buckley and Reagan simultaneously, thus beginning the gradual purge of liberal (or sane) Republicans from the party. Conservative Democrats (including Helms and Strom Fucking Thurmond) left to join the Republicans.

Nixon’s “Southern Strategy,” coupled with the “Christian Coalition” of Robertson and Falwell, exacerbated the realignment. By 1980, it was effectively complete, save for some liberal Republicans who didn’t leave for a decade or so thereafter.

But can you blame the GOP for ignoring this? Their version of history ends at 1960.

Why isn’t there rioting in the streets about this? A paranoid/delusional maniac in the White House thinks no one can question his power.

People who voted Trump lived in a delusional world in which Obama was an all-powerful despot, and now want their man to come in, kick butt and take names.

Do not expect them to understand separation of power or checks and balances. They are just mad a politics and politicians and voting Trump was just their idea of a big middle finger raised at the entire government.

Some might find this interesting, using R to analyze Trump’s tweets:

Poor Donald - his tweets keep getting more negative

Image: fig_1.png

The vertical lines denote the date he was named as the Republican candidate (May 3rd 2016), the date of the election (Nov 8th 2016) and inauguration day. Thing aren’t looking up for Trump. He seems to be more angry/sad/negative now than any prior point during the past year.

Damn, it looks like the Republicans are getting bolder and bolder and just willing to say anything. A congressman actually hoping for a terrorist attack to get their way is about as low as it can go.

Wake up America! Are you getting enough of a picture yet at how fucked up the GOP party is? You’ve bought their bullshit for years, listened to FOX News, Rush and Glenn, read the crazy words of Alex, Breitbart and all the wingnut blowhards and you believed they were good for America.

Along comes the Big Orange Mouth that roared and his stupid election has given cover to the blackness that IS the GOP and now we are all hearing how out of control and power hungry they are and how they are so not going to make America great.

This shit needs to be stopped sooner than later.

If my Facebook stream is any indication, the Trump supporters seem quite fine with a fascist dictator.

There has been this thread of America for quite some time. It’s not a new thing. Perhaps what we’re seeing today is a dilapidated Christianity in America not having the moral compass to fight back. My Facebook stream is conflicted on this part, with some of the more “liberal” Christians quite appalled at Trump and his supporters, while the fundamentalists seem quite fine with Trump’s rule.

Beginning of a Goebbels speech about Jews, with Muslims substituted:

The historic responsibility of world Muslims for the outbreak and widening of this war has been proven so clearly that it does not need to be talked about any further. The Muslims wanted war, and now they have it. … If Muslims should succeed in plunging the world into war once again, the result will be not the Bolshevization of the world and thereby the victory of the Muslims, but rather the destruction of the Muslim race in the Middle East.

We are seeing the fulfillment of the prophecy. The Muslims are receiving a penalty that is certainly hard, but more than deserved. World Muslims erred in adding up the forces available to it for this war, and now is gradually experiencing the destructon that it planned for us, and would have carried out without a second thought if it had possessed the ability. It is perishing according its own law: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

Every Muslim is our enemy in this historic struggle, regardless of whether he vegetates in a Syrian refugee camp or carries on his parasitic existence in Berlin or Hamburg or blows the trumpets of war in New York or Washington. All Muslims by virtue of their birth and their race are part of an international conspiracy against United States of America. They want its defeat and annihilation, and do all in their power to bring it about. That they can do nothing inside the USA is hardly a sign of their loyalty, but rather of the appropriate measures we took against them.
