Photos: Donald Trump’s Shocking Incompetence; Held National Security Meeting in Public Dining Room

So wrong
Politics • Views: 34,594

One of the most disturbing incidents yet for the Trump Horror happened over the weekend, when North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile.

I’m not talking about the missile test, although that’s bad enough, and clearly intended to test the Narcissist in Chief. No, I’m talking about Donald Trump’s response. Because he made no attempt at all to discuss the news in a secure way; instead he held an impromptu national security meeting right there where he was having dinner, in a public dining room.

And it gets even worse. Because the ordinary uncleared citizens in that dining room also had stunning access to things ordinary uncleared citizens should be nowhere near.

For example: this photo posted by retired investor Richard Agazio on his Facebook page (now deleted), showing him posing for a nice cozy selfie with the military member who carries the “nuclear football” that allows Trump to start the apocalypse. A screenshot of that post:

How do you even begin to describe the appallingly dangerous incompetence of this presidential administration?

And it gets even worse.

Notice, though, that the photos appear to corroborate an important detail from the CNN report. “The patio was lit only with candles and moonlight, so aides used the camera lights on their phones to help the stone-faced Trump and Abe read through the documents,” Liptak writes. In DeAgazio’s first photo, you can see a phone flashlight being used in that way.

Why is this important? Mobile phones have flashlights, yes — and cameras, microphones and Internet connectivity. When Edward Snowden was meeting with reporters in Hong Kong at the moment he was leaking the material he’d stolen from the NSA, he famously asked that they place their phones in the refrigerator — blocking any radio signals in the event that the visitors’ phones had been hacked. This was considered the most secure way of ensuring that the phones couldn’t be used as wiretaps, even more secure than removing the battery. Phones — especially phones with their flashes turned on for improved visibility — are portable television satellite trucks and, if compromised, can be used to get a great deal of information about what’s happening nearby, unless precautions are taken.

Precautions weren’t taken. One of DeAgazio’s photos shows Trump using a phone at the table, within view of other diners (and while sitting next to a foreign leader). It’s not clear what phone Trump is using in that picture, but it’s known that he uses a relatively old Android device, even while serving as president. As we noted last week, Trump generally uses that device when he’s not in the middle of a work day. Shortly before the dinner with Abe, he tweeted from it.

You can be quite certain that the enemies of the United States have taken note of incidents like this.

Trump won not despite, but rather because he violated every rule and convention of politics and campaigning. Do not expect him to change his game now that he has access to the football…

Kris Kobach: This image shows proof of @CNN bias. They run text below my picture claiming my statements are false. So much for letting the viewer decide.

Perhaps Mr. Kobach thinks he’s on FOX. On CNN, they at least make a pretence of reporting what’s true (including when a guest is lying).

You know Trump wanted to do it publicly. Think of all the adoration he’d get! How presidential it makes him look to the paying customers (read: audience)! Sickening.

Hey, get us a real press here in the interior. Something beyond a conservative newspaper and FOX News. Maybe some Internet and cell phone service too. (At the moment I would take touch-tone landline service.)

I felt like I was a hermit in a hair shirt out here trying to push back against the propaganda that went unanswered.

I think what about the situation both shocks and infuriates me is not simply the cavalier attitude on display, so much as the lack of attention this story is drawing from the media. The same media that spent months chasing down every rumor that somebody who might not have the highest security clearance might have viewed part of one of Hillary’s emails and the national security implications of such an incident. When the New York Post dropped a rumor that Hillary’s maid had been tasked with printing out emails, the GOP pounced on the story and made sure everybody heard about it even if there was never any proof whatsoever.

Now we have an incident where our president was reading classified documents on what is likely an unsecured phone, provided light by other unsecured cellphones, and in the presence of a foreign leader and several random bystanders. And yet the same media…couldn’t give a fuck less.

Lucian Wintrich is a brand strategist and digital creative. After graduating from Bard College in 2012, he has worked as Business Strategist at Einhorn Media Group, in addition to writing a dozen scripts and a few half finished books, he freelances as a graphic/web designer. The fuckers wont apply any of this to Trump or the WH, even though this is blatant violation of security protocol for classified info.

Let’s count the ways:

aw fuckit. It doesn’t matter how many times we point out that the GOP wont act when it’s one of their own, especially one as dangerously incompetent and ignorant of protocol and rules that are meant to safeguard national security. They’ll go along with this bullshit because their ultimate goal of gutting the safety net is within reach. After that, they’ll do what they want with Trump.

Okay, just so I can get a little calibration here:

It seems to me that “Both parties have moved to the extremes” is total Magical Balance Fairyism. Am I missing something?

Because it seems to me that my whole life, the Democratic Party has been in favor of Keynesian economics, strong organized labor, minority rights, separation of church and state, reasonable but not crazy defense spending, international alliances as a way to prevent war, healthcare access/insurance for everyone, a decent minimum wage, safe work environments, clean air and water, a strong social safety net, etc.

I mean, ferchrissakes, Harry goddam Truman proposed national health insurance over 70 years ago. That’s to the LEFT of the ACA!

The Democrats in Congress are, on average, more liberal than they used to be, back when there were more Joe Manchin’s in the party, Back when Ralph Hall called himself a Democrat. That was back when there were a number of liberal Republicans. Both parties had a number of people that would cross party lines to vote. But, the far left of the party hasn’t really moved much, unlike the far right of the party. So, yes, the idea that both parties have become extreme is MBF-ing and avoiding discussing what is happening to the GOP.

The Overton window, also known as the window of discourse, is the range of ideas the public will accept. It is used by media pundits.[1][2] The term is derived from its originator, Joseph P. Overton (1960-2003),[3] a former vice president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy,[4] who in his description of his window claimed that an idea’s political viability depends mainly on whether it falls within the window, rather than on politicians’ individual preferences.[5] According to Overton’s description, his window includes a range of policies considered politically acceptable in the current climate of public opinion, which a politician can recommend without being considered too extreme to gain or keep public office.

But I’m really curious about comparisons of Trump’s attempted authoritarianism and that of other countries. We’ve seen the parallels, but there seem to be some significant differences, most obvious in that it seems to me that Trump is having trouble consolidating his power, even with the help of McConnell and Ryan. Unlike even Bush, he’s having trouble turning his election into popularity for his agenda.

The Dems have moved left on social issues but the country as a whole has.

But the whole concept of the role of government has eroded massively over recent decades, a lot of people raised under Reaganism really look on almost any government employee (especially a teacher or social worker) as a moocher or useless eater.

let me quote from the most recent letter from my gay GOP college buddy:

So you might ask, how did I become so anti-government? It really began in 1986 when I went to work for a guy named Lester Snow with the Tucson office of the Department of Water Resources. An asshole. Career water bureaucrat, no scientific background. He used to ridicule anybody including me that had a technical background.

Wasn’t interested in facts, figures, science or economics. Just the best way to create another bureaucracy. A man in his times. Was quite the success. Became director of the California Department of Water Resources.

Told three environmental groups on the record “Don’t worry about that spillway, its safe.” Off the record admitted that the state didn’t want to fix the Oroville Dam spillway because of money. Lester Snow is about to become the Michael Brown (head of FEMA during Katrina) of the largest dam disaster in american history.

re: #176 HappyWarrior

Interesting article I just found:

Begala: He spoke at the Bush 2004 convention. And it really strained our friendship to say the least. Carville publicly broke with him, had donated to Zell’s campaign and publicly said I want my money back. It was just a bitter, bitter break.

I have to say, I was thinking about doing the same. And, I mean…this guy, he called me his third son. I mean, I’m really close to him. I was thinking about doing that. And I got a call from someone who said, “Look, you need to never do that, never publicly attack this man.”

And I said, “why?”

And the person said, “Because the chances are really good that you’ll outlive him and you don’t want that on your conscience. This guy’s been too important to your life.”

That person was Hillary Clinton. She called me up like an older sister and said, “Just set the politics aside, I’m totally with you…” She maintained a friendship and a relationship with Zell that didn’t really reflect in Zell’s votes. He voted with Bush almost all the time. But it was a just a human thing.

And today Zell and I are really close again. So is James [Carville] by the way. He’s gone to visit him. The governor’s had some health concerns, and it was a real blessing that advice, that no matter what your political differences are, this is somebody that I love and I have a real history with.

He introduced me to Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton would have never hired Carville and me if it hadn’t had been for Zell Miller. And on top of that, personally, he’d just been such an important part of my life. And I’m really glad that I didn’t give into those more angry impulses.

Governor Reagan would have no chance of winning the GOP primary these days. He signed the most liberal abortion bill in the country, he signed gun control legislation, he raised taxes because it was the only way to balance the state’s budget, and then after he served as governor, he opposed the Briggs Initiative (which would have prevented gay people from being public school teachers).

And that doesn’t even get to the stuff he did as president, which in addition to what you noted, includes appointing two justices who were responsible for upholding Roe v. Wade (O’Connor and Kennedy), and negotiating a nuclear disarmament treaty with the Soviets.

Actually the original Michael Brown of dam disasters is Mulholland, who oversaw the St. Francis dam construction, said everything was okay, and the dam burst hours later.

Or perhaps the BLM folks under Ford who approved the Teton dam, that burst when they were first filling it because they continued to build the dam despite knowing that there were cavities - caves and fissures -throughout the building site and didn’t think that it would be a problem and chose not to grout all of the fissures.

My ex-mother in law used to refer to herself in the third person, like “That wouldn’t make mum very happy, would it?” It drove my ex-husband and his siblings crazy. Then she had surgery one time, and my BIL sent her flowers with a card that read, “Keith hopes you’re feeling better soon!”

I was in the Navy and really liked Jimmy Carter. Amongst other reasons, he didn’t take the country to war, and pushed through the largest pay rise post-draft (to try to bring enlisted pay closer to par with civilian pay).

The U.S. Justice Department said on Monday a Seattle federal judge should not conduct further proceedings until after a U.S. appeals court reviews the suspension of President Donald Trump’s travel ban from seven-Muslim majority countries, according to a court document.

Trump’s order, which he called a national security measure meant to head off attacks by Islamist militants, barred people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering for 90 days and all refugees for 120 days, except refugees from Syria, who were banned indefinitely.

U.S. District Judge James Robart in Seattle suspended Trump’s order after its legality was challenged by Washington state, eliciting a barrage of angry Twitter messages from Trump against the judge and the court system. That ruling was upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco last week, raising questions about Trump’s next step.

An unidentified judge on the 9th Circuit on Friday requested that the court’s 25 full-time judges vote on whether the temporary block of Trump’s travel ban should be reheard before an 11-judge panel, known as en banc review. The 9th Circuit asked both sides to file briefs by Thursday.

The Justice Department did not say on Monday what position it would take on the 9th Circuit’s en banc decision, but indicated that the outcome of the process “will likely inform” what additional proceedings are necessary in Seattle.

In a separate court filing on Monday, Washington’s attorney general said a Seattle judge should immediately allow discovery into the merits of its case.

Robart has scheduled a hearing to take place on the issue later on Monday.

California isn’t all liberal, and it isn’t all crunchy. A whole lot of Trump voters would be killed, displaced, injured from a dam collapse there.

This goes beyond the immediate politics to just being Americans.

But some right wing assholes have to be assholes and think this helps undermine a liberal state - maybe used as leverage to go after illegal aliens or other such stuff.

Like all of a sudden those folks will start going out into the fields and moving a couple tons of food each per 18 hour day for crap wages?

The biggest user of FEMA funds every year is Oklahoma, yet wingnuts there (when I lived there anyway) insisted FEMA was some sort of horrible bloated liberal giveaway. (In a sense it is: It gives away disaster relief funds to conservative states.)

And yes, a lot of the levees haven’t been reinforced…Sacramento did a few of theirs about 15 years ago after a near fatal failure. Yuba saw a levy fail a few years back and the first victim was the wife of the guy responsible for monitoring it.

It will be interesting to see what fails and where this year. There’s a shitload of water that wants to come down from the Sierras.

Eh… the Ninth Circuit is slightly different than the rest. Because of the size, not every sitting judge ends up on the en banc panel. Just because someone requested it, doesn’t mean they’d get to write a dissenting opinion because they might not end up on the panel. I am kind of curious who would have requested it, but that kind of tea leaf reading is pretty much worthless.

Sua Sponte

[Latin, Of his or her or its own will; voluntarily.]

For example, when a court takes action on its own motion, rather than at the request of one of the parties, it is acting sua sponte.

Sua sponte (sorry should have explained what that meant) hearings are incredibly rare - judges have enough on their plates at all levels of the judiciary. Usually they just set a deadline and if you don’t file something by the deadline, then you’re out of luck. Some courts will consider late filed documents, some won’t, often depends on the judge. Also, if they’re going to produce evidence, it will most likely be at the trial court, not the appellate courts.

And an en banc hearing would not allow for the introduction of more evidence, at least it usually doesn’t. In a normal case, the losing party (in this case the government) would have the choice to either request an en banc panel (which is discretionary) or seek certorari from the Supreme Court (a very formal way of asking the Supreme Court to consider the case, which is often (though not always) discretionary as well). For a judge to request an en banc hearing, that likely means one of them thinks the panel got it very wrong.

Six years later, he’s too lazy to run for Senate again but decides four years after that to run for President.
