We were watching a couple shows on PBS last weekend, about the dangers in the home in various eras. They did a whole thing on Chemistry Sets, and how dangerous they were, especially since the usual goal seemed to be to mix shit together and see what happens. Because it was originally a BBC show, they focused on the UK, but that particular set made an appearance. It seems that one didn’t sell very well. Not too exciting since all it did was make clicks on a geiger counter.

Charles, I remember Grandma Bacon telling me about the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918. She was scared to death to leave her boarding house in DC. She was working as a clerk for the Navy Department at the time. Several coworkers started coughing at their desks, within a couple hours they collapsed to the floor and died. Grandma thought that the reason it didn’t hit her was that she built up immunity because she had the flu the previous year and spent a month in the hospital recovering from it.
They had corpses stacked in warehouses that were sealed off from the public for fear of contamination. People wouldn’t go out in the streets without covering their faces with handkerchiefs soaked in camphor or Listerine. And this only added to panic A. Mitchell Palmer was stoking with his Leftist raids.
If a pandemic occurs again, we know how the Republicans will spin it! They’ll just bullshit about it being “Gawd’s Will”.

My mother bought me a chemistry set for a present when I was about eleven.

Absolutely. That’s why the military has USAMRIID and other similar facilities. Disease outbreaks are a nightmare scenario, and the Ebola outbreak was a test of those systems. It function exceptionally well and we know how the few cases that did occur within the US happened (accidental exposures in Texas).
But this administration and their fear/faith-based approach will likely make any future outbreak far worse because all the people who know what to do and how to handle the situation have been cashiered out of those positions on ideological grounds.
Once again, Trump has made us all less safe.

The U.S. Navy announced Thursday it had conducted a test launch of its Trident II D5 missile from an Ohio class ballistic missile submarine assigned to Submarine Group 9, out of Bangor, Washington.
The test launch of the nuclear capable missile system was part of regular tests that “are conducted on a frequent, recurring basis to ensure the continued reliability of the system,” said John Daniels, a spokesman for the Strategic Systems Program, which oversees the Ohio-class Trident submarine program.
The successful exercise was a culmination of a three-day training operation that saw the launch of four missiles. The missiles were unarmed during the training evolution and were launched from the sea and landed in the sea. “All missiles are tracked from multiple sources from launch until final impact in the ocean,” Daniels said.

You might be right, but I think Trump sees Pence not so much as an ‘one of his own’, but rather as someone imposed on him. I suspect that how Pence acted during the ‘Pussygrabber’ crisis would make Trump see him as someone whom he couldn’t trust completely. If that’s true, Trump would be perfectly happy using him to tell the lie about Flynn’s calls with the Russian Ambassador.
I guess we’ll have to wait for Ex-President Pence’s book, “My Crazy Year With Donald Trump” to come out.

This town closed itself off from the outside world entirely, only allowing deliveries to the town line.
No more than three people were allowed in a public place at a time (including the grocery stores). The grocery stores would only accept lists of needed items, and they would deliver them to your home.
The movie theatre here was closed by village order.
Livestock remedies were sold by grifters (Spanish flu did not affect livestock but ranchers didn’t know that).
Nurses came from the Colorado TB sanitarium to assist with those who were ill. At the time there was no physician in the village.

The administration’s response mimicked Trump’s remark a day earlier that even if leaks coming out of the government are “real,” the news is “fake.” And it also fit into what appears to be a pattern of ignoring reporters’ requests for comment, only to push back quickly after stories are published.
At 10:12 a.m., The AP tweeted that the administration was considering using as many as 100,000 National Guard troops “to round up” undocumented immigrants. The news organization soon published a full story, attributing the details of the possible plan to a 11-page draft memo it had obtained.

I’m up in the hills in a relatively newish housing division, built with massive drainage. Lowest flood insurance risk area. I’ll still have a virtual creek flowing through the side yard because they put a shallow bed through the grass rather than build a proper french drain.

Sorry, Mr. President, but saying we are “dishonest” is a broad generalization. It is like saying, “politicians are nothing but liars.” We are far from perfect but to throw a blanket over all the press, calling us liars, is unfair. The vast majority of us strive to be fair, which doesn’t mean we are going to always print what Republican voters, Democratic voters and the politicians they voted for like.
Politicians and the press have always had a strange love/hate relationship. When you need us to promote your policies, you love us, but when it is something you would rather not talk about, you hate us. We understand that, but don’t expect us not to ask, not to probe and be a pain in your political side. That is part of our job.
We are not your lapdogs, we are our readers’ watchdogs. Granted, those who voted for you, such as myself, would rather hear how great you are doing, but we also, even if we don’t like it, need to hear the negative. We need you to explain your policies and answer the questions those who disagree with you are asking.

That is what’s frustrating in hindsight. We learn more about the past as we grow older and yet our links to the past fade. My dad’s mom was six in 1918. I really wish I could have asked her more questions. I really feel my family research keeps my memories of my older generations still alive and even the generations I never knew. None of my family died of the flu pandemic as far as I know but the one grandmother did lose her mother quite young.
One of my best college experiences involved something that was well outside my major, and well outside the campus in fact. During a summer school oral history project, I returned to Texas and interviewed very elderly (95+) people in the Dallas Fort Worth. This was in 1976 so these folks were born before 1881, as far back as 1872 in one case. We recorded their impressions of what life was like in that area in the 1870s and 80s. One old man, then 102, told us about the first time he had seen electric lights. We established pretty firmly that this was at the Texas State Fair in 1882 when he was 8 years old
“You can’t imagine what electric lights look like to someone who has never seen them before.”
There were similar recollections of the first telephones, President Cleveland and Governor Hogg, and, of course, many tall tales about famous outlaws.
This kind of interest was inspired by the lady who lived next door to us when I was a child in Colorado Springs. She had been born in Washington DC in 1859, spent the whole Civil War there, and could remember seeing Abraham Lincoln in person. She had a photo to prove it, too (Lincoln’s visit to her father’s office in 1864). She died in 1959, a few weeks short of her 100th birthday. I remember her kindly gray/green eyes. All these years later, it still strikes me with awe that I have looked into the very eyes that saw the great Lincoln himself. I may end up as one of the last living people to have done so.

That was one of the stranger aspects of the 1918 Flu - it disproportionately killed young, healthy people and left older and younger folks alone. Most flu has a ‘M’ shaped age/mortality distribution - youngs and olds most susceptible. This one was an inverted V.
