That explains why I had to have the third arm amputated from my back /s.

My brother-in-law says he wants to give us his Fiestaware (that’s the dinnerware in question).

chemistry.about.com

Old Fiesta dinnerware was made using radioactive glazes. While the red pottery is noted for its especially high radioactivity, other colors emit radiation. Also, other pottery from the era was glazed using similar recipes, so just about any pottery from the early to mid 20th century may be radioactive. The dishes are highly collectible, both because of their vivid colors and because the radioactivity is cool. Would you be safe eating off the dishes or would it be better to place them high on a shelf, to admire from afar? Here’s a look at just how radioactive the dishes are today and the risks of using them for serving food.

We were watching a couple shows on PBS last weekend, about the dangers in the home in various eras. They did a whole thing on Chemistry Sets, and how dangerous they were, especially since the usual goal seemed to be to mix shit together and see what happens. Because it was originally a BBC show, they focused on the UK, but that particular set made an appearance. It seems that one didn’t sell very well. Not too exciting since all it did was make clicks on a geiger counter.

Charles, I remember Grandma Bacon telling me about the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918. She was scared to death to leave her boarding house in DC. She was working as a clerk for the Navy Department at the time. Several coworkers started coughing at their desks, within a couple hours they collapsed to the floor and died. Grandma thought that the reason it didn’t hit her was that she built up immunity because she had the flu the previous year and spent a month in the hospital recovering from it.

They had corpses stacked in warehouses that were sealed off from the public for fear of contamination. People wouldn’t go out in the streets without covering their faces with handkerchiefs soaked in camphor or Listerine. And this only added to panic A. Mitchell Palmer was stoking with his Leftist raids.

If a pandemic occurs again, we know how the Republicans will spin it! They’ll just bullshit about it being “Gawd’s Will”.

I’m at a point right now where I might have to start carrying my birth certificate around on me, because I’m afraid I might end up in a situation where I’ll have to prove my citizenship, and my state ID and SSC won’t cut it for someone intent on marking me an ‘illegal’. Forget the fact that my parents were refugees in all but name and law, forget that I’m the youngest born of 4 children all born in the states, forget I grew up in deep coal country of Southern WV. I’m brown, I have a Hispanic last name, and have been mistaken for everything from Hispanic to Chinese to Indian to Middle Eastern and back. And that makes me one of those folks who could easily get wrapped up in the net despite all the right legal statuses.

Had a lot of fun mixing up toxic and dangerous stuff that probably shouldn’t be done by anyone outside a lab with a PhD in chemistry or physics.

Absolutely. That’s why the military has USAMRIID and other similar facilities. Disease outbreaks are a nightmare scenario, and the Ebola outbreak was a test of those systems. It function exceptionally well and we know how the few cases that did occur within the US happened (accidental exposures in Texas).

But this administration and their fear/faith-based approach will likely make any future outbreak far worse because all the people who know what to do and how to handle the situation have been cashiered out of those positions on ideological grounds.

Once again, Trump has made us all less safe.

Look at Dolt45’s support among the GOP. It’s as high as you could possibly get it without going into literal Strongman Dictator numbers, even when his numbers are flatlining with other groups.

That’s why the Congressional GOP isn’t going to do fucking squat: their base loves this and loves it all the more precisely because of how pissed off everyone else is

I saw that last night. What it clearly says to me is that despite the “You’ll be the most powerful VP EVAR!” pitch that Uday supposedly gave to Kasich, Trump basically sees the VP as a patsy.

This is one of literally a dozen or more things that I related to Mrs. FBW, only to be met with, “Is anyone surprised by this?” Good point. It’s completely what you’d expect Trump to do.

I gather Mike Pence was surprised, though.

US Navy test fires Trident D5 missiles (yesterday).
militarytimes.com

(more at Military Times)

The U.S. Navy announced Thursday it had conducted a test launch of its Trident II D5 missile from an Ohio class ballistic missile submarine assigned to Submarine Group 9, out of Bangor, Washington.

The test launch of the nuclear capable missile system was part of regular tests that “are conducted on a frequent, recurring basis to ensure the continued reliability of the system,” said John Daniels, a spokesman for the Strategic Systems Program, which oversees the Ohio-class Trident submarine program.

The successful exercise was a culmination of a three-day training operation that saw the launch of four missiles. The missiles were unarmed during the training evolution and were launched from the sea and landed in the sea. “All missiles are tracked from multiple sources from launch until final impact in the ocean,” Daniels said.

And the general heartlessness. Yes immigrating illegal is well illegal but maybe make it easier to emigrate legally. Oh, they don’t want that. Too many stuck up white assholes have no idea what it’s like to actually emigrate to another country because our ancestors already made the sacrifice that they didn’t years ago. You might be right, but I think Trump sees Pence not so much as an ‘one of his own’, but rather as someone imposed on him. I suspect that how Pence acted during the ‘Pussygrabber’ crisis would make Trump see him as someone whom he couldn’t trust completely. If that’s true, Trump would be perfectly happy using him to tell the lie about Flynn’s calls with the Russian Ambassador.

I guess we’ll have to wait for Ex-President Pence’s book, “My Crazy Year With Donald Trump” to come out.

That was one of the stranger aspects of the 1918 Flu - it disproportionately killed young, healthy people and left older and younger folks alone. Most flu has a ‘M’ shaped age/mortality distribution - youngs and olds most susceptible. This one was an inverted V.

This town closed itself off from the outside world entirely, only allowing deliveries to the town line.

No more than three people were allowed in a public place at a time (including the grocery stores). The grocery stores would only accept lists of needed items, and they would deliver them to your home.

The movie theatre here was closed by village order.

Livestock remedies were sold by grifters (Spanish flu did not affect livestock but ranchers didn’t know that).

Nurses came from the Colorado TB sanitarium to assist with those who were ill. At the time there was no physician in the village.

(Pinged my wife for the info, who did a research project in the library for a University of Omaha professor.)

My maternal grandmother, who lived till 2013 and age 105, was 10 in 1918 and had vivid memories of the flu epidemic. She said it was the worst public event of her lifetime, which is saying a lot since that encompasses both world wars and the Great Depression. Her teacher and 5 of her 24 classmates died and many people thought it was literally the end of the world.
In 2010, when she was 102, one of the yokel media outlets tried to capitalize on a flu scare by contacting grandma and inviting her to talk about the 1918 pandemic on the air. I guess she was the only coherent person they could find who could remember it first hand. She told them to jump in the river. “You are trying to scare people and spread sensationalism and I won’t be part of that. When you have 5 or 10 thousand people a day dying from the flu, get back to me and we’ll talk about 1918.”

That is what’s frustrating in hindsight. We learn more about the past as we grow older and yet our links to the past fade. My dad’s mom was six in 1918. I really wish I could have asked her more questions. I really feel my family research keeps my memories of my older generations still alive and even the generations I never knew. None of my family died of the flu pandemic as far as I know but the one grandmother did lose her mother quite young.

My mother grew up in South Philly. She told me, as a child, of her experience. I think she was about 10 or so. No public gatherings. No funerals. They would come around at night to round up the bodies so as not to allow the public to see the amount of dead in the light of day. Buried in mass graves. To this day. While the Constitution is hardly a perfect document, I doubt anyone writing such a document could have foreseen a bunch of nihilists and madmen being elected.

Indeed. It was written with the expectation that the people would elect nothing worse than garden-variety corrupt politicians. Nobody expected comic-book villains.

Question for Charles, or anyone who might know.

Is there a way to use the Amazon affiliate links on a site like LGF or Bob Cesca’s, and still get the Amazon Smile bonuses applied too? I have my Amazon Smile setup to give money to the SPLC, and I’d like to make sure if I’m getting a percentage to you guys that they get some too.

Yes - if you post the Amazon Smile link at LGF it will be automatically converted to an LGF affiliate link, and the charity still gets the same percentage. I don’t know about Bob’s site, though.

Trump now admits the report on National Guard is based on a real document.
huffingtonpost.com;

President Donald Trump’s administration labeled The Associated Press’s reporting on a leak “100 percent false” on Friday morning, only to acknowledge less than an hour later that the story was based on a real document.

The administration’s response mimicked Trump’s remark a day earlier that even if leaks coming out of the government are “real,” the news is “fake.” And it also fit into what appears to be a pattern of ignoring reporters’ requests for comment, only to push back quickly after stories are published.

At 10:12 a.m., The AP tweeted that the administration was considering using as many as 100,000 National Guard troops “to round up” undocumented immigrants. The news organization soon published a full story, attributing the details of the possible plan to a 11-page draft memo it had obtained.

(more at Huffington Post)

Now they’re saying the document exists but was never “seriously considered.”

Much more serious for us is that we don’t have much as far as storm gutters. When it rains hard the water just goes all over the place.

I’m up in the hills in a relatively newish housing division, built with massive drainage. Lowest flood insurance risk area. I’ll still have a virtual creek flowing through the side yard because they put a shallow bed through the grass rather than build a proper french drain.

I plan to take it slow on the way home, this is perfect idiot weather.

Telling Trump things is like reading Shakespeare to someone’s dog. It doesn’t matter what you say, all you’re gonna get back is “bark”.

I’m a lifelong aviation dork, and I can’t shake the feeling that the F-35 is The Plane That Should Not Be. It’s a double-extra-expensive rehash of the one-size-fits-all idea that has never, ever truly worked in the real world, and aside from alleged stealth and the networked battle system, it doesn’t appear to offer any capability beyond what we already have or need. I could be wrong but it seems like the F-35’s bang-for-buck ratio is pretty skewed.

Finally! The Senior Editor of my regional paper went after Donald Trump in an editorial today.
starherald.com

He starts with his first couple paragraphs saying he voted for Mr. Trump, and likes his pick of Judge Gorsuch. Then:

I want to give you a chance to succeed. If you succeed, we as a country will succeed. However, in giving you the chance, you worry me.

Why?

You worry me because you tend to vilify those who disagree with you, especially those of us in the press. We have our flaws and have work to do, but some of the things you have said about us are downright lies.

In your first speech to military service members you called us “the very, very dishonest press.”

Sorry, Mr. President, but saying we are “dishonest” is a broad generalization. It is like saying, “politicians are nothing but liars.” We are far from perfect but to throw a blanket over all the press, calling us liars, is unfair. The vast majority of us strive to be fair, which doesn’t mean we are going to always print what Republican voters, Democratic voters and the politicians they voted for like.

Politicians and the press have always had a strange love/hate relationship. When you need us to promote your policies, you love us, but when it is something you would rather not talk about, you hate us. We understand that, but don’t expect us not to ask, not to probe and be a pain in your political side. That is part of our job.

We are not your lapdogs, we are our readers’ watchdogs. Granted, those who voted for you, such as myself, would rather hear how great you are doing, but we also, even if we don’t like it, need to hear the negative. We need you to explain your policies and answer the questions those who disagree with you are asking.

(More at the Scottsbluff NE Star-Herald, where he actually goes into Mr. Trump more.

re: #143 HappyWarrior

That is what’s frustrating in hindsight. We learn more about the past as we grow older and yet our links to the past fade. My dad’s mom was six in 1918. I really wish I could have asked her more questions. I really feel my family research keeps my memories of my older generations still alive and even the generations I never knew. None of my family died of the flu pandemic as far as I know but the one grandmother did lose her mother quite young.

One of my best college experiences involved something that was well outside my major, and well outside the campus in fact. During a summer school oral history project, I returned to Texas and interviewed very elderly (95+) people in the Dallas Fort Worth. This was in 1976 so these folks were born before 1881, as far back as 1872 in one case. We recorded their impressions of what life was like in that area in the 1870s and 80s. One old man, then 102, told us about the first time he had seen electric lights. We established pretty firmly that this was at the Texas State Fair in 1882 when he was 8 years old
“You can’t imagine what electric lights look like to someone who has never seen them before.”
There were similar recollections of the first telephones, President Cleveland and Governor Hogg, and, of course, many tall tales about famous outlaws.

This kind of interest was inspired by the lady who lived next door to us when I was a child in Colorado Springs. She had been born in Washington DC in 1859, spent the whole Civil War there, and could remember seeing Abraham Lincoln in person. She had a photo to prove it, too (Lincoln’s visit to her father’s office in 1864). She died in 1959, a few weeks short of her 100th birthday. I remember her kindly gray/green eyes. All these years later, it still strikes me with awe that I have looked into the very eyes that saw the great Lincoln himself. I may end up as one of the last living people to have done so.

Letter to the Star-Herald submitted; we’ll see if they print it. (They almost always print my letters, because they need the token liberal opinion):

Mr Staman,

As the editor of the Star-Herald, you have been following Mr. Trump since he announced his candidacy.

He opened with his racist remarks about Mexico, moved to attack a Gold Star Family, openly encouraged his supporters at every rally to attack the assembled press.

He invited neo-Nazis and Klansmen into his campaign. He made Steve Bannon, a person who wants to destroy the government his “campaign CEO” and now one of his advisers, He gave press credentials to Alex Jones, and Jim Hoft (a man known as the Stupidest Man on the Internet).

You did not go into this blindly. You voted for him knowing all these things. Do not act surprised now that he is keeping his campaign promises.

The Star-Herald endorsed him knowing all these things. There was a person who warned of his dangers: Hillary Clinton.

John Heywood in 1546 put it so: There are none so blind as those who would not see.

Rain’s been falling at a 45 degree angle for hours, just brutal shit with really strong winds. I had to do a quick work errand a bit ago and there were large branches down all over the place, a few gigantic lakes in the road where drainage is poor.

I usually leave work at 4 and ride my bicycle from Hollywood to Culver City. I get the feeling my ride home today will be like Dorothy and Toto’s. Maybe the wind will die down a little by then.

Sadly, enough, I just bought a new thimble. I searched the internet and Joann’s and finally found one on ebay.

Yes, I needed a special one

re: #281 JordanRules

Very well done. How many would you say you’ve written over the years? I think you’ve pretty much nailed the format so I’m curious.

I’ve had about a couple dozen letters printed in the Star-Herald, a few more in the Omaha World-Herald, and two or three more when I was in Oklahoma in the Ponca City News.

I do see a clunky sentence up there, and a misplaced comma where there should be a period.

The trick to Letters to the Editor is they should stick to one point (in this case the editor complaining in his op-ed that he supported Mr. Trump but is dismayed by his attacks on the press), and ideally be under four hundred words.

Had Nixon said flat out that the press is the enemy in public, that would have damaged his standing among Republicans.

Republicans are different today, and just about everything Nixon did that got him in trouble with 197x Republicans is being done by Trump to thunderous applause from 201x Republicans.

That was one of the stranger aspects of the 1918 Flu - it disproportionately killed young, healthy people and left older and younger folks alone. Most flu has a ‘M’ shaped age/mortality distribution - youngs and olds most susceptible. This one was an inverted V.

There was a theory that older people were protected because they had acquired immunity by surviving a similar strain during the 19th century.

re: #308 Hecuba’s daughter

There was a theory that older people were protected because they had acquired immunity by surviving a similar strain during the 19th century.

My grandfather was born in 1892. His father had his wife and four children die in a flu epidemic, and survived with four children. His mother had her husband and four children die in a flu epidemic, and survived with four children. They married and had four more, my grandfather being the first. So that would have been in the mid to late 1880s, in southern Illinois.
