Simon & Schuster Cancels Publication of Milo Yiannopoulos’s Book

Breitbart employees threaten to walk out if he isn’t fired

Milo Yiannopoulos’s career is in total free-fall today. As you can see from the tweets above, his book deal with Simon & Schuster has been cancelled. I’m wondering if he’ll still get to keep that $250,000 advance, or if there’s some kind of “morality clause” in his contract?

And that’s not all. Other employees at the far right propaganda site Breitbart “News” are now threatening to resign if Yiannopoulos is not fired.

A senior editor at the right-wing publication tells Washingtonian that “at least a half-dozen” employees are prepared to leave the company if Milo Yiannopoulos is not promptly fired. A second Breitbart source confirms this estimate.

“The fact of the matter is that there’s been so many things that have been objectionable about Milo over the last couple of years, quite frankly. This is something far more sinister,” the senior editor says. “If the company isn’t willing to act, there are at least half a dozen people who are willing to walk out over it.”

“Talking abut young boys and somehow seeking to ameliorate concerns over young boys’ relationships with older men…I’m pretty sure everyone in the company would vomit upon hearing these words,” the source continues. “What right-thinking person doesn’t feel sick to their stomach when hearing something like that?”

Right. His support for white supremacism, his race-baiting, his hateful comments about Muslims, his harassment of women and transgendered people, all of that was fine with Breitbart’s employees — but they draw the line at pedophilia. Nice to know they have standards.

Can we slow this all down…just for a minute? Stuffs happening so fast today I cannot get any work done and even come close to keeping up with the threads.

And this is all just from Bill Maher Friday night ‘til now. I guess Milo finally touched a nerve…maybe the public’s last one. People do a little digging after Maher’s show and the past comes to catch up and bite his ass.

But how can that surpass the Brits actually discussing how much they want to distance themselves from Trump? Unprecedented in our times I would say. Has the relationship between the two countries ever gone this off the rails in the last 100 years?

I’m tired of all this winning triggered by Trump.

They used the pedophilia statements against Milo to take him down but that wasn’t really their motive.

I’m trying to set up as secure and anonymous of internet access device as possible.

Is TAILS still the secure OS of choice?

I assume running it (or whatever other OS is best) on a portable device so I’m not constantly hitting the same internet access point would be the ideal, correct? If so, would a Chromebook be enough hardware-wise or will I need a full-fledged laptop?

I knew of him as a fusion guitarist, and then I saw him do a show with ‘Jack Bruce and Friends’ - Bruce, Mike Mandel on keys and Mitch Mitchell on drums - and he put just about every rock guitarist I idolized in those days to shame.

Seeing someone doing ‘Sunshine of your Love’ on an L-5 was one of the wackiest things I’d ever seen, but he quoted the first four bars of Clapton’s solo and then went off. So long ago, but I still remember that show like it was yesterday.

We just got back in this morning at 1am and were pretty much completely disconnected from the news while on vacation. (It was fantastic.) So I am so far behind on the Oroville news. Most of what I’ve been seeing is the stuff going by on Twitter.

I don’t think my normal running path is drying out anytime soon. Too much more and my 5 mile route is going to be in some serious trouble. (I’m already having to run the high side of it.)

This is entire mess is basically a marketing mistake, but a telling one.

Milo is basically a product and a performer. His “provocations” are bits in the same way comedy routines are.

However…his audience want cruelty and to not empathize—so much so they basically have imaginary outraged liberals in their heads, and seek out actual upset liberals just to sate their need—so when he workshops material, it all tilts toward greater titillation of cruelty. Each round of proclamations, articles, and harassment campaigns has incorporated difference variations on theater of cruelty, targeting different groups and individuals (as synedoches of groups). And each time, his audience not only signs on, but doubles down. It is precisely this quality to his performance that elevated him to where he is (was?): CPAC isn’t quite as guignol as Milo, but it plays out as a self-righteous variant of the same catharatic shitting on lesser folk.

Consider this mess in that light—-to play to an audience that wants more and more titillation in a very particular direction: to denigrate anything “liberals” (a giant swath of people won’t aren’t necessarily liberals in any political sense) seem to value. Playing to that inclination, mocking the concept of consent probably seemed like a brilliant new rock to throw: after all, it’s not an entirely new front to explore (as noted elsewhere, the alt-right dabbles in scoffing at consent because of its MRA element).

All this to say: how many rounds of not caring were cycled through before the people supporting him balked? That’s a rump measure of the hierarchy they impose on the world: who matters, who do they identify with. They didn’t balk at other words about sexual assault and women, et cetera. It had to get this bad before they’d recognize an issue, while the rest of us could see this coming. And now that some have balked, how is their distaste characterize-able, as opposed to their reaction to other similar scandals?

As I said with Trump, these are people who’ve already excused worse. Since Milo broke the one last aesthetic taboo by talking about boys, he won’t come out as clean, but it’s still likely he’ll be salvaged and found a use. Remember, this whole pederasty thing simply further confirms the threat of homosexuality, and he can play on that trope to sell himself in a slightly different way to the same audience. He’s still a product—a gay man that confirms the ugly things they believe—and he can still perform a variant of that function and get paid.

Remember all those fake repentant terrorists that make money on the talk circuit (Walid Shoebat being the most visible)? There you go.

You could build something that handles X, so you don’t build for Y or Z because that costs more.

Were shortcuts taken or were there issues with how they built the spillway? Quite possibly. Or that the repairs done over the years were incomplete.

As technology has improved, we’ve learned more about how water flows and computer simulations can help figure out how to better engineer structures. The emergency spillway is a mess, and they’re going to have to investigate how that was ever allowed, and there’s reports that they should have been armored years ago, but the operators refused to spend for it (there’s that money thing again).

On October 17, 2005 three environmental groups filed a motion with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission urging federal officials to require that the dam’s emergency spillway be armored with concrete, rather than remain as an earthen spillway and that it did not meet modern safety standards. “In the event of extreme rain and flooding, fast-rising water would overwhelm the main concrete spillway, then flow down the emergency spillway, and that could cause heavy erosion that would create flooding for communities downstream, but also could cause a failure, known as ‘loss of crest control.’” FERC and water agencies responsible for the cost of the upgrades said it was unnecessary and concerns were overblown.

In 2006, a senior civil engineer sent a memo to his managers stating “The emergency spillway meets FERC’s engineering guidelines for an emergency spillway,” and that “The guidelines specify that during a rare flood event, it is acceptable for the emergency spillway to sustain significant damage.”

Apparently there are limits, even for a provocateur.

Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos—well-known for his unapologetic comments about women, Muslims, minorities, transgender people and others—appears to have crossed a line. Over the weekend, a video surfaced of Yiannopoulos apparently expressing favorable views of pedophilia, and the backlash has been swift.

Yiannopoulos posted on Facebook that the video in question had been edited and that as a gay survivor of childhood sexual abuse he does not condone pedophilia.

“I understand that my usual blend of British sarcasm, provocation and gallows humor might have come across as flippancy, a lack of care for other victims or, worse, ‘advocacy,’” he wrote. “I deeply regret that.”

If there is some sort of outlandish story about his political opponents engaging in illegal, disgusting and/or degenerate acts getting pushed out, it is a very very safe bet that it is a cover for something that they are committing themselves. It has happened repeatedly during the past year or so and almost with a clockwork precision.

It seems to be a truism of conservatism in general: “It’s always projection.”

One of the blast from the past names that have come out attacking the CA response is Victor Davis Hanson, because of course he did.

Let’s just ignore that CA has continued to be constrained by various propositions, and gets back far less than it sends to DC. Or that this is an agency that relied on outdated/outmoded data and that it’s maintenance of the dam may have been suspect - or incomplete, because - money. Not wanting to spend money on infrastructure. Taxpayers not wanting to spend on infrastructure because it wasn’t deemed necessary.

I met VDH once, in law school or shortly after (check that, shortly after because he was selling this book at the time EDIT: might have been during, the publication date is for the second edition), a Federalist Society event (I think). The book wasn’t very memorable, nor, quite honestly was he… just another conservative wondering why things aren’t as good as when they were kids.

Which, come to think of it, pretty accurately describes a lot of conservatives. “Things were better when I was a kid, why can’t things be like that again?”

Well, they have their entire list of speakers (sans Mr. Yiannopolis) but they don’t list a particular one as a keynote speaker.

The first and most important concept of Public Policy and economics was the Tragedy of the Commons:

This concept has informed us for almost 200 years, but was not really incorporated into American law until the Nixon Administration, when the concept was expanded it to include our shared land, air, and water with the Clean Air and Clean Water acts and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The fact that we are still arguing over this goes a long way to explain the fight amongst Libs and Cons.

It’s a stupid fight, and was settled along ago. The counterforce against it was spelled out in the Preamble to the Constitution that stated:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Why are we fighting over The Founders stated dreams? That’s Originalism.
