Shorter Politico: Trump Is a Crybaby Who Needs Constant Praise and Attention

The president is an uncontrollable 70-year old baby
Politics • Views: 48,032

Politico’s story about how his staffers tried to keep him off Twitter just confirms what was already obvious: he’s a pathological narcissist who throws tantrums if he doesn’t get enough praise.

Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States.

President Donald Trump’s former campaign staffers claim they cracked the code for tamping down his most inflammatory tweets, and they say the current West Wing staff would do well to take note.

The key to keeping Trump’s Twitter habit under control, according to six former campaign officials, is to ensure that his personal media consumption includes a steady stream of praise. And when no such praise was to be found, staff would turn to friendly outlets to drum some up — and make sure it made its way to Trump’s desk.

“If candidate Trump was upset about unfair coverage, it was productive to show him that he was getting fair coverage from outlets that were persuadable,” said former communications director Sam Nunberg. “The same media that our base digests and prefers is going to be the base for his support. I would assume the president would like see positive and preferential treatment from those outlets and that would help the operation overall.”

He can’t be left alone, he needs constant caregiving.

Just like a person with dementia.

The in-person touch is also important to keeping Trump from running too hot. One Trump associate said it’s important to show Trump deference and offer him praise and respect, as that will lead him to more often listen. And If Trump becomes obsessed with a grudge, aides need to try and change the subject, friends say. Leaving him alone for several hours can prove damaging, because he consumes too much television and gripes to people outside the White House.

Part of the current problem is Trump is still adjusting to his new circumstances and has plenty of time to stew over negative reviews as he spends time alone in the evenings and early mornings as his wife, Melania Trump, continues living in New York as his youngest son, Barron, finishes the school year.

Pence and Senate GOPers are busying burning up phone lines to try and convince our allies that we’re not completely bugnuts insane for having elected Trump and that our policies aren’t changing - that we’re still going to support and protect them under our treaty obligations. That’s one hell of an ongoing apology tour, and we’re just a month in. Pence is off in Europe trying to keep the NATO/EU nations from getting a case of the jitters because Trump’s throwing chum in the water and Russia’s all into that.

Trump undermines anything and everything these enabling establishment GOPers say to try and reassure our allies overseas. He has made it clear that he has little utility for NATO and that Russian aggressions go unanswered. We’re supposed to act like we don’t notice, or care?

Fuck that.

If I were the leader of one of our allies, especially the weaker ones with Putin rearing his ugly head nearby, I would be looking for other options that didn’t involve depending on US help and protection. And I very much doubt that talking to the guy who says he was out of the loop on Flynn’s contacts with Russia would reassure me. I’d probably say something like, “Dude, they kept you in the dark on that, and used you to spread a false story. I gotta wonder how you could work in a campaign where the candidate had to be handfed positive stories about himself to keep him from ragetweeting while on the shitter, and had to have people around him to keep him from watching too much TV and getting upset, and say to yourself, “This, THIS is THE ONE GUY who needs to be in charge of the most powerful nation in the world, and able to unleash enough firepower to end humanity on a whim!”

Putin seems to want to harken back to the drab old days as though they’re the heyday - also a reminder that Russia’s getting left behind by the rest of the world in standard of living and that oil wealth is fleeting. Tremendous problems that a military buildup can’t fix.

Even when they try stuff to build up national pride - like Olympic success - it falls short when you get caught doping on nation-state scale.

And now, like Germany with its Sudentenland, they have millions of Russians stranded beyond their borders. And whereas these Russians were a privileged and even pampered minority in the Soviet republics, they are often feeling the other end of the stick. That is going to cause no end of unrest for Putin to exploit.

But I see comparisons with him and the old Cold War to be misleading. At most, he wants to re-establish the old Russian Empire, if not as a political entity, then as a sphere of military and economic dominance.

Seven temperate terrestrial planets around the nearby ultracool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1

One aim of modern astronomy is to detect temperate, Earth-like exoplanets that are well suited for atmospheric characterization. Recently, three Earth-sized planets were detected that transit (that is, pass in front of) a star with a mass just eight per cent that of the Sun, located 12 parsecs away1. The transiting configuration of these planets, combined with the Jupiter-like size of their host star—named TRAPPIST-1—makes possible in-depth studies of their atmospheric properties with present-day and future astronomical facilities1, 2, 3. Here we report the results of a photometric monitoring campaign of that star from the ground and space. Our observations reveal that at least seven planets with sizes and masses similar to those of Earth revolve around TRAPPIST-1. The six inner planets form a near-resonant chain, such that their orbital periods (1.51, 2.42, 4.04, 6.06, 9.1 and 12.35 days) are near-ratios of small integers. This architecture suggests that the planets formed farther from the star and migrated inwards4, 5. Moreover, the seven planets have equilibrium temperatures low enough to make possible the presence of liquid water on their surfaces6, 7, 8.

Stop the presses, a campaign tried to control media narrative by pushing stories to friendly outlets. That I expect, it is sort of the job of the campaign. The fact that they had to do it to assuage their candidates ego is the concerning bit here.

A military buildup by itself doesn’t signify much. How it relates to GDP - a percentage of GDP is a better indicator of whether that spending would undermine a nation’s economic and social health.

US spending currently is less than 5% of GDP (on downslope after spending more than that following 9/11 attacks - 3.3% according to this. That’s lower than US spending on the military for most of the post WWII period. Russia is spending 5%, even though Russia’s economy is anemic at best.

The percentage also hides that the total value of the respective economies is hugely different. US dwarfs Russia’s economy. So, for Russia to even attempt to project military power comparable to the US, they’ve got to spend even more. They simply never had that capability.

So, suddenly the Russians are spending more to try and keep pace with the US (and China - whose military spending is roughly 2% GDP), and the US decides that they want to spend more? We’re already spending more than every one of our current rivals/enemies by a wide margin.

90’s porn star Jenna Jamison has gone full metal alt right.

As one of the world’s most famous ex-porn stars, a XXX icon who’s appeared in close to 200 adult films, it is pretty surprising that Jenna Jameson has rebranded herself as an alt-right firebrand.

Then again, the 42-year-old formerly known as Jenna Marie Massoli has, in recent years, become a major proponent of far-right thought, tweeting and retweeting provocative messages criticizing Muslims and immigrants to her 693,000 followers (some of whom, we assume, may have thought they were going to receive more than regurgitated Breitbart headlines).

Jameson, a vocal supporter of Trump—who claims to have converted to Judaism in order to wed her fraudster fiancé, and once cameoed on The Celebrity Apprentice—has spent much of the last 48 hours engaged in an anti-Muslim Twitter tirade, which began after she leapt to the defense of President Trump’s spurious implication at a Florida rally that Sweden had suffered some sort of terrorist attack when it had not, prompting the former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt to question on Twitter what Trump had “been smoking.”

Holy shit, look at the difference between ‘white with college’ and ‘white without’.

One hates to speak ill of so many people, but Jesus Christ, there’s a lot of stupid people in this country!

Not necessarily stupid. Ignorant. My parents didn’t have college, but they sure weren’t stupid.

True. And it’s not 100:0 vs 0:100, but still - MAN! There are a lot of stupid people!

I’ll believe THAT when I see it: I know Fox were less-than-enthusiastic about supporting The Yam during the campaign, but once he got the nom (still more when he won), they fell right in to the cheerleading line. They know their audience: they wouldn’t seriously “turn” on Trump if he were impeached, convicted and removed from the White House in shackles.

“as he spends time alone in the evenings and early mornings as his wife, Melania Trump, continues living in New York as his youngest son, Barron, finishes the school year.”

I see that Politico continues its tradition of farming its journalism out to folks who don’t speak English as a first language.

re: #10 Charles Johnson

Woohoo. Hundreds of crazed right wingers ranting about the evil SSSORRROS! in my mentions today. It’s a block party!

Or maybe just a few. I had always assumed Twitter was too easy for propagandists to game, and it was proven when all those tweets went out with exactly the same message recently. We can never assume anything is what it seems online.
