Why would he walk this back? He doesn’t care.

The GOP doesn’t care. They’re enabling his nonstop violations of the US Constitution (and their own violation of their oaths of office in the process).

They see what Trump’s polling with their constituents. He’s got strong support among the GOP, so these craven cowards wont stand up to Trump and demand action. They wont stand up to demand action on the #FlynnFlam or #RussiaGate or the scandal du jour (and it truly is a scandal a day).

Until the GOP starts to get whacked in polling for his pro-Putin policies or that he’s failing to do anything he set out to do, nothing changes.

Trump could murder someone on 5th Avenue, and his supporters would cheer him on.

Under court order, the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office today released 7,564 pages of emails and other records that it had withheld from the public, prompting a lawsuit by the Center for Media and Democracy. The emails reveals Pruitt, the former Oklahoma AG, coordinating his responses to EPA policies with oil industry lobbyists and executives. That included Devon Energy drafting a letter that Pruitt later sent to the agency opposing the EPA’s limits on the release of methane in oil and gas fracking.

Read (and search for) the emails here. MB

Well, “jammed” in the sense of being voted into law with to GOP support.

Trump’s base hates the media and just about everybody else. AS long as the GOP is held in thrall to these nihilists, they will not turn on Trump.

By example, this Esquire bit from the Saturday rally is terrifying…

Two retired women sat in folding canvas camping chairs, watching the line, waiting for the rest of their party to gather, certain the protesters across the road were paid by George Soros.

“I think there’s a good share of them,” said Francis Gilmore, who’d moved down to Florida in the last decade. They were here to advance the Soros agenda. “You can go anywhere you want, do anything you want, live the way you want, say anything you want. No sort of control. They will control us.” Soros was the bad kind of billionaire, not like the ones in Trump’s cabinet, who “don’t have to rob the money from us because they’ve got enough of their own.”
Her friend, who refused to give her name, agreed. “There are many others besides George Soros but George Soros is the biggie,” she said. “All the braindeads suck in the false news, because they don’t have the ability to read and get the proper information.” The friend had gotten a lot of the hidden details from The Creature from Jekyll Island, a Federal Reserve conspiracy book written by an HIV/AIDS denialist who believes he knows the location of Noah’s ark and can cure cancer with a poisonous plant extract. When asked where else she gets her news, she replied, “Mostly radio.”

Gilmore and The Nameless Friend agreed that the protesters represented an unprecedented rejection of the office of the president and an ahistorical breach of civility.

A man with dusty clothes, gap teeth, and a tan darker than his sandy blonde hair walked by with a four-year-old girl on his shoulders.

“Hey, who wants to kill an unborn baby?” he said, gesturing across the street. “All them are retards. That’s some shit.”
*****

Night had fallen, and protesters finally walked across the street and engaged the remaining Trump supporters in a group, perhaps a few dozen chanting and waving placards at the stragglers still emerging from the hangar. Police lights flickered on cruisers that had been parked on the lawn. Voices raised, but no one was throwing punches.

“America was going down the tubes,” said Bill Moro, a raspy-voiced and stubbly 50-something who voted for the first time ever for Trump. “They said our constitution was unconstitutional. That’s what Obama said. And Clinton.”

“[Trump] needs to drain the swamp of judges, too,” he said. “I don’t care what he does. I’m behind him 100 percent. Put it this way: If he became a dictator, and they said, ‘We want him in forever,’ he’s my man. He’s in. I’ll never vote against him … I love his power … It’s the power that does something to me.”

******

The young Muslim girl in hijab was still there. She was from Orlando and had protested circa Occupy, and she conceded she wasn’t prepared for the reception she’d gotten that afternoon, one that darkened as the day faded and made her want to withhold her name, for fear the night would stretch on forever online.

During the speech, she’d stood among the Trump supporters who watched on the big screen and listened through the loudspeaker. After, she’d moved together with the bloc of protesters who converged to greet the Trump supporters leaving the speech. Her head covering was noticeable, even in the crowd.

Later that night, she texted me a video of people walking in parallel to her, yelling, just a few blocks away outside Keiser University. She said they’d followed her from the rally, and their clothes and conversation suggest as much. The people looked familiar, in the same way that a composite does, in that way that all white people yelling racist things have a sneer that verges on archetype.

“Leave,” a woman shouted on the video, flipping her off. “You don’t like America, get the fuck out … You are a disgrace to America,” the man walking next to her said.
They mocked her camera. “You can jack off to that later, the man drawled. “I’ve got a big ol’ white American redneck dick.”

The woman in the hijab told him where to stick it.

“I can put it up your little tight ass,” he countered, “and I won’t be hittin’ that clit, ‘cause it already got removed.”

WTF? “Uniting to push their evil agenda through Congress” is seriously the only thing the GOP can really do well! “Divided” as they may be, they are still a fuckton better-organized and coherent than Trump’s WH: they probably feel they don’t NEED any “leadership” from the Executive Branch. Just a signature on whatever crap they jam through, with a few nods/strokes/praises to the man-baby in the West Wing and some self-congratulatory bluster for the yahoos back home.
The GOP Congress fears exactly ONE thing, and one thing only: loss of control via elections. And even then, not much, as they figure the Pres will simply veto anything he doesn’t like, and then blame Democrats for any fuckups.

The Trump administration is preparing to rescind the Obama administration’s protections for transgender students in public schools — but U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos initially opposed the move, the New York Times reports.

A lot of what’s happening with the trans community feels like what happened with the gay community 20-25 years ago. As people come out, the majority is scared and/or confused, they fight against basic decency in the name of the children or their gods or traditional norms or their own ick factor, eventually people in the majority meet people who came out and (many/most) gain some understanding. Does seem to be happening faster now than it did back then. Maybe that’s technology or just the fact that we’ve been through this before.

Pennsylvania. This is a release today. Look at the numbers. Just in Pennsylvania. Good grief.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 22, 2017

Wolf Administration Officials Discuss Implications of Affordable Care Act Repeal for Pennsylvania Consumers

Harrisburg, PA - Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller, Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy, and Secretary of Human Services Ted Dallas today joined Pennsylvania consumers to discuss the implications of repealing the Affordable Care Act for consumers around the commonwealth. More than 1.1 million Pennsylvanians currently receive coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchange and Medicaid expansion.

Commissioner Miller highlighted the advancements the Affordable Care Act has made in providing quality coverage for all Pennsylvanians. Because of the Affordable Care Act, more than 6.1. million Pennsylvanians benefit from access to free preventive care services, 5.4 million cannot be denied health insurance coverage due to a pre-existing condition, and 4.5 million are no longer subject to annual and lifetime limits that used to be placed on covered benefits. These protections benefit all Pennsylvanians and are not limited to those who receive coverage through the Medicaid expansion or a plan purchased on the exchange.

Commissioner Miller urged lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to keep the voices of consumers who are positively impacted by the Affordable Care Act in mind when considering the law’s future.

“We need to focus on building on the progress we’ve made since the health law was passed instead of undoing the system and starting from scratch,” said Commissioner Miller. “While the Affordable Care Act isn’t perfect and there are certainly improvements that could be made that would address the overall issue of rising health care costs and lead to a more viable, attractive market that provides more options to consumers at competitive prices, these are not the conversations that are taking place.”

If the ACA were to be repealed, Pennsylvania could lose 137,000 jobs in 2019, almost all in the private sector and would reduce gross state product by $76.5 billion and state and local tax revenue by $2.4 billion between 2019 and 2023. Over the next 10 years, ACA repeal is estimated to result in nearly $36 billion less federal funding for health care for Pennsylvanians and $7.8 billion more in state spending.

“Make no mistake — repealing the Affordable Care Act will impact millions of people in Pennsylvania and around the country. Even individuals and families who have health insurance coverage through an employer will feel the effects of this,” said Commissioner Miller. “However, as we discuss the future of the Affordable Care Act and the implications of a repeal, we cannot talk about impacted individuals as numbers only. These are real people whose ability to access and afford necessary health care is at risk.”

Secretary Murphy shared how the loss of public health funding connected to the Affordable Care Act would impact health departments at state and local levels. Funding goes towards services like vaccines for children and adults, cancer screenings for eligible underserved women, and addressing risk factors for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Money from the Prevention and Public Health Fund also helps the state work against the opioid crisis by supporting opioid monitoring programs and provides grants for research to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

“Repealing the Prevention and Public Health Fund would resonate beyond the federal level and hit state and local health departments hard,” said Secretary Murphy. “Our job is to ensure the health and safety of all our citizens, but especially to protect our most vulnerable populations including children, seniors, and low-income Pennsylvanians. The loss of this funding in the coming years arrives at a time when major health threats, like infectious diseases and the opioid epidemic, are on the rise. The PPHF is vital to help protect the health of the nearly 13 million people who call Pennsylvania home.”

If the Affordable Care Act is repealed, state and local health agencies could lose nearly $112 million from the Public Health Prevention Fund over five years.

Secretary Dallas shared how the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion has contributed to Pennsylvania’s lowest uninsured rate ever.

“As a result of the ACA, Pennsylvania has its lowest uninsured rate in history and more than 700,000 Pennsylvanians received coverage through the Medicaid expansion” said DHS Secretary Ted Dallas. “Repeal without replacement would have a devastating impact across the state and leave hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians without access to health care.”

Pennsylvania’s Medicaid expansion is also crucial in the fight against opioid addiction. Since Governor Wolf accepted the Medicaid expansion in 2015, 124,000 Pennsylvanians have received substance use disorder treatment.

The Wolf Administration officials were also joined by three consumers who shared how the Affordable Care Act has impacted their ability to access and afford care and their overall health.

“The ACA protected me. The insurance industry, under the old system, could have cast me out and all those expenses would have been mine. The ACA saved my financial life,” said consumer Carl Goulden of Carlisle, who faced rising costs in premiums due to pre-existing conditions before going on a marketplace plan when the ACA was implemented. “If this bill is replaced or repealed, we go back to those days.”

Actually, I think it’s more like “pay for it yourself, you freeloading lazy moocher”.

And this is why I used the word “fault” in my response. They believe that not having a job is a moral failure to be punished until rectified, not a shitty thing that just happens to people because corporate culture in America sucks major ass.

re: #64 thedopefishlives

Actually, that’s exactly it. In Republicans’ minds, not having a job is entirely the fault of the laborer, never on the market.

Even though every single person I know who finally got insurance for themselves and their kids through ACA actually do have jobs.

There’s two ways to play it. One is that he’s a rubber stamp for anything Trump wants to do, which is basically your approach. The other, which is mine, is to point out that he (like Marcus Rubenstien - Pod Save America joke there) is a fucking coward too scared to have an opinion on anything.

Either approach works, sadly, you probably can’t use them both.

Actually, I take that last part back. You set up two SuperPACs or PACs or whatever the fuck we’re calling them now. Each runs ads based on one of the approaches. Then after about 3 months of non-stop ads, they do a joint one where it’s two characters debating whether he’s Trump’s rubber stamp or just a fucking coward… and it ends with a Morgan Freeman style voice over: Does it really matter?

Sen. Tom Cotton visited the State Capitol today. He gave an opening prayer in the Senate. He also met with Republican caucus. A usually reliable source reports:

“Our favorite Senator, Tom Cotton, visited with the Repub caucus at the state Capital today and told them he would welcome any of their constituents who wanted to come to his town hall meeting. He said if they would give his staff the names of their constituents who wanted to attend he would make sure they were brought in first so they would have access. I am sure you agree he is trying to fill the hall with friendlies so he will have a reason to bar the ones he doesn’t want.”

The town hall is at 5 pm Wednesday at Springdale High.

Anaheim: Watch cop who’s pissed at kids going home after school. Pulls kid through bushes & fires gun.

No one was injured, but the 13 year old was arrested.

[Embedded content]

Here’s what the Anaheim PD is saying:

ANAHEIM, CA - (February 22, 2017) - Yesterday afternoon around 2:40 pm, an off-duty LAPD officer was involved in a confrontation in front of his residence with several juveniles. The confrontation began over ongoing issues with juveniles walking across the officer’s property. During the confrontation, a 13 year old male is alleged to have threatened to shoot the off-duty officer, at which time the officer attempted to detain the male until APD arrived. This led to a physical confrontation between the off-duty officer and several other juveniles. During the confrontation the officer discharged his firearm one time. The circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm are being investigated by the APD Homicide Detail. The 13 year old male was booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall for criminal threats and battery. A 15 year old male was arrested for assault and battery and was released to his parents.
The case will be presented to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office when it is completed. The names of the involved parties are not being released at this time.
The Los Angeles Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation into the actions of the officer.

A grown up mad because kids are walking across his yard, starts a fight with them. There’s a longer video on youtube (see below), where the off duty cop says the kid said he was going to shoot him and the kid clearly says “why you lying?” And from the video, there’s plenty of witnesses. This entire thing is insane.

Exactly. Unfortunately we’ve seen enough police bad behavior to know that this is their go to cover up.

In the extended video, he drags the kid across two or three properties before getting to his. He chased a kid down and drug him back. It wasn’t until another kid shoulder tackled him through the hedges that he pulled out the gun (meaning that at no time did he have a subjective fear of life or great bodily harm, justifying brandishing a weapon - despite the allegation that the kid said he’d shoot him). The entire time, a very large group of kids are confronting him, telling him to let the kid go, trying to reason with him. There’s no good way to spin what this guy did, none.

Now? She’s been by the office of the local Congresscritter. She’s writing letters. She’s making phone calls. She’s protesting. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see her volunteering in a campaign come 2018.

I’ve had friends who are resistant to describe themselves as a victim of something where if it were someone else they would have no issues at all with identifying what had happened as wrong.

As such, I don’t necessarily read his discussion of how he views what happened to him as applying to how he would view the same thing happening to someone else.

Sure. Because they know the echo chamber will repeat the lies endlessly and 85% of the GOP will believe it.

Talk about going from bad to worse—Tiberi was my congressman in Ohio—now I have an equally big asshole, Tom Rice—he’s supposedly having a “coffee with the congressman” tomorrow night (who has a “coffee” at 6 pm?) I’ve heard of about 200 people who are planning on going—don’t know if I can make it—it’s an hour away and I have company.

All these people protesting at town hall meetings - where were they last October, before the elections, when at least a few seats may have been affected?

Where were they in WI and MI, where Trump won by very small margins, which Obama had carried easily the previous two elections?

Takei doesn’t think him being molested was actual molestation, which is sorta like when Milo didn’t think he was a victim of molestation.

I haven’t followed this the Takei / Yiannopoulos thing but I did say this.

The fact is that Milo applies very different standards to female rape accusers than he does to himself. When women don’t come forward until years later he casts it as a reason to disbelieve him, when he does the same thing only to use his story as a fucked up defense of pedophilia we’re supposed to just take is word for it. I’m not saying I think he’s lying, but I am saying his credibility is deeply suspect.

re: #348 Charles Johnson

But but but… ” my daughter’s privacy is violated if some trans person is in the restroom. Then my kid wont be able to change without some trans person seeing.”

This is the kind of baffling BS that I was getting tonight too. Because straight girls can’t assault other girls? Or can’t body shame or leer or make someone feel like they can’t dress/undress in a lockeroom or use a bathroom without worrying that they’d be attacked in some fashion?

These people are so hung up on this notion that a guy will end up in the women’s bathroom. They don’t get that a trans person might be using the restroom and they’d never know. Or a changing room for that matter. Or a locker room.

But demanding that someone use their birth gender to identify what bathroom to use means you’d have someone who appears for all intents and purposes as someone of the opposite sex using the facilities - and that’d cause more problems than they realize (or care).

These people are so seriously hung up on this bathroom stuff. I think it may be because they’ve lost so much else in the culture war that they’re left with these kinds of issues.

re: #361 lawhawk

Your mistake is imagining this is actually about protecting people.

This is about sustaining a myth of a grand unified depravity, in which sexual assault is a thing done by weird people that you can identify by their appearance and mannerisms, not something that happens because somebody with access and and power chooses to commit that crime. The back end of this Trans Peril—and the very similar Gay Peril—is that “normal” people (with the right tribal identifiers) can’t a part of the problem, and aren’t capable of these things because of their acceptable affiliation/politics/religion.

As always, it’s working backward to justify what they feel is true.

They don’t want to look at access and power, because they like hierarchy and hero worship, and don’t want to think about the downside. They don’t want to think “normal” people—people with the same cultural norms and espoused values—are capable of such acts.
