Watch Live: CPAC, Festival of Right Wing Lunacy, Featuring Lots of Guns

Wingnuts • Views: 67,060

NBC News

Here’s the live video feed from CPAC, the annual exhibition of right wing bad craziness. For example, as I write this, the current “panel discussion” is an NRA-sponsored nightmare urging women to buy lots and lots of guns because it’s the only way for them to be “safe.” After this, the guy who wanted to wreck the United Nations, former UN ambassador John Bolton. And after that, failed CEO and presidential candidate Carly Fiorina.

Also scheduled for today, discussions with lovely titles like “How Did the Left Capture Education and How Do We Get It Back?” and “Repealing Obama’s Banking Monstrosity and Making Money Work Again: Making Money Great Again.”

Here’s the complete agenda (not all of which will be shown in the live feed).

Unfortunately… One America News Network - Wikipedia

One America has limited national carriage on Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse, along with a number of regional cable providers, including CenturyLink, Consolidated Communications, and GCI. As of 2015, it is available in 15 million homes.

No way to know how many people are watching, but 15 million homes ain’t nobody.

Asymmetry: Trump’s supporters are okay with the idea of the Government shutting down actual news outlets, leaving only propaganda providers, but we’re not okay with the Government shutting down the propaganda providers.

This asymmetry is a problem I’m not sure how to address.

My favorite “religious expression” example slipped in there… “a climate scientist forced to teach a class debunking global warming.” Yes, because scientific beliefs based on observable data and analysis is exactly the same thing as religious faith based on a book written hundreds or thousands of years ago and translated multiple times.

Also, I’m fairly certain that most (if not all) atheists would have no problem decorating an alter, since a job is a job is a job.

Well, as an atheist, I once turned down a commission to weave a church-related item. It would have involved design and, as someone who grew up in a completely nonreligious household, I didn’t feel competent to do it. Had they said, “Can you weave this design, this size, in these colors?” I would have been more than happy to do it. So, I guess if you include not doing things I’m not qualified to do as a religious exemption, that would count.

From a constitutional law standpoint, atheists do have religious beliefs, sort of. The Supreme Court explained (I think it was O’Connor writing for the majority and Scalia dissenting, but I’d need to find the case to be sure) that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. So, the absence of a belief in god is protected the same way that a belief in Zeus, Allah, Vishnu, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or the Trinity. The bigger problem is that they are confusing (likely on purpose) religious actions and economic actions.

They are also throwing out a libertarian argument: You should be able to refuse anyone for any reason in a business.

My go to argument is:

I am an atheist. Everyone in my town knows that. If the general store here refuses me service for “religious reasons,” the next store is sixteen miles away.

Everyone in that store also knows I am an atheist. If they also refuse me service, the next store is sixty miles away.

It is the same problem that African-Americans had travelling in the South during Jim Crow. The argument was that they could go to some other business.

The reality was if another business accepted African-Americans, that business would be boycotted out of business by the majority.

How goddamned desperate for one good news cycle do you have to be to needlessly gamble astronaut lives on a mission that essentially boils down to a joy ride? Reading through that, it doesn’t change my opinion. CNN turned her down for that day, everyone else called it a ban - we all went “yay, keep it up” - and then they had her on Tuesday, and we all went “boo”.

Well, I suppose one could view it either way.

In the end, CNN decided it needed access more than it needed journalism. Lot of good it did them today.

How goddamned desperate for one good news cycle do you have to be to needlessly gamble astronaut lives on a mission that essentially boils down to a joy ride? Tech has advanced a lot since Apollo 8, a human presence adds nothing to the scientific value of this flight. It’s purely a publicity stunt and one with an enormous downside if anything goes wrong.

I absolutely resent the “paid protester” drill. As everyone knows, I have regularly protested various organizations since the 1980s. I’ve done dozens of pickets of Scientology from California to Florida and states in between. I spent seven months picketing Mark Driscoll’s “church” in Scottsdale last year. I PAID for all that out of my own pocket. Last year, I figure it cost me around ~$1,000 to picket, with the biggest single chunk being the GoPro and the equipment to wear it.

I flatly RESENT this idea that those of us who go out and protest are being paid to do so. That’s simply not the truth. The truth is that if you work at it hard enough and long enough, getting into someone’s face over and over and over again alerts the public that something’s wrong. Scientology is not the organization it was in the 1990s, when even the Clinton State Department took up Scientology’s issues with Germany. (For the record, I am opposed to what Germany was doing to Scientology, but then again, we don’t—currently—have the same history Germany has with high-pressure groups.) Scientology is the butt of jokes now, and it took dozens and hundreds of people picketing, over and over again, in various ways, to get that out. I’m proud of what we did there.

And so today, I’m going to Congressman Andy Biggs’ office to picket because he won’t have a town hall, but does have the time to go on friendly talk radio shows and show up for a CPAC panel.

The tl;dr is: I’m probably the closest thing to a “professional protester” on LGF, and I pay for it, all of it.

re: #73 goddamnedfrank

Trump’s defenders will probably invariably point to the shuttle flights. Let’s just ignore that they had manned test flights (drop flights of the Enterprise) from its 747 carrier. And that NASA underestimated the risks of those flights (and the issues from the external tanks dropping insulation against the shuttle or O-ring fragility under certain temperature conditions (both ended up causing loss of the entire crews of the Columbia and Challenger respectively).

The first several manned missions were test flights under specific conditions. But Trump wants the political gain from sending our people back into space on one of our spacecraft. Just ignore that the Space X flights (Dragon) has been moving in that direction and even they have setbacks. It’s not completely risk free, even now.

We’ve said this before but gerrymandering only works when there are small losses. If enough people within a gerrymandered district turn on the GOP all bets are off.

I can’t say this will happen but there are a lot of unhappy people out there, a lot of whom are Republicans.

The novelty has worn off trump and the taint is taking hold. It’s not cute any longer. People are going to lose their healthcare. These are Republican’s ducking their constituents in republican held districts.

The CPAC Russian flag pranksters step forward.

Two young, progressive activists from DC, Jason Charter and Ryan Clayton with the group Americans Take Action, purchased tickets to the conference, and handed out nearly 1,000 flags to attendees as a prank. After they were thrown out of the conference, they told TPM they wanted to “shed light on an important issue”—namely, the drip of revelations of backchannel communications between the Russian government and the Trump campaign—and allow people to “get a laugh out of their day.”

Charter, 22, told TPM by phone that he and Clayton organized the prank in order to “honor Trump’s relationship with Putin.” He said almost no one at CPAC seemed to realize the flag he handed them bore the horizontal red, white, and blue stripes of the Russian Federation underneath Trump’s name.

“I asked people if they wanted a Trump flag and they took it,” Charter said. “Many Trump supporters were proudly waving their Russian Trump flag.”

“I think it says a lot about Donald Trump’s base and their education level,” he said. “I don’t want to insult anyone, but I think you should know what the Russian flag is. They are one of the world’s major powers, and it’s a pretty easily recognized flag.”

Heh. Genius.

Forgive my non sequiturs, I am doing house renovations and listening to CPAC in the background, and feel the need to comment to something other than my cat, although she is very forgiving and attentive.

Just now, I was listening to a panel from earlier with Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R GA) and he said something I found disturbing that I want to comment on. (Also my arms are tired from painting…)

He said, with conviction, that “every law is an infringement on liberty.”

Not to get all highbrow, but I find that very frightening as a concept.

I have always subscribed to the philosophy of Rousseau (and I thought our country did too) and the idea that laws level the playing field and allow true freedom to exist, that without some laws, we would be necessarily dominated by forces that can be prevented…

If you believe, that absolutely, all laws infringe freedom, and that freedom is good for the sake of it, then is it any surprise the Right Wing would cozy up to pedophilia apologists and sophists who apologize for Putin?

More frightening, all laws are susceptible to their suspicion, and therefore, all behavior and alliances are possible given the right circumstances. They are in essence and on the face of it, opportunists. Nothing more.

And that’s not a political party, it’s not an ideology, it’s not even a viable club… it’s a mechanism, a vehicle for the least empathetic among us, it is a means for sociopaths to achieve power.

In many nations where authoritarian regimes rise, the press quickly flips to support the regime. That has happened time and time again, and there is no reason our press would somehow be special in this regard.

That also makes it easier to shut down opposition stations or publications.

Note also Sen. Ted Cruz is all in on “shutting down certain portions of the Internet.”

Here comes the kill-shot: merriam-webster.com

Definition of deconstruct
transitive verb
1: to examine (as a work of literature) using the methods of deconstruction

2: to take apart or examine in order to reveal the basis or composition of often with the intention of exposing biases, flaws, or inconsistencies e.g., deconstruct the myths of both the left and the right — Wayne Karlin

3: to adapt or separate the elements of for use in an ironic or radically new way e.g., uses his masterly tailoring skills to deconstruct the classics — Vogue

4: destroy, demolish e.g., nations that are deconstructing themselves — Jim Hoagland

How are the Trump stooges falling into definitions 1, 2 and/or 3, and not 4?

Allen Clifton debunks a variety of Republican bullshit: Invading hordes of Mexican and ISIS operatives, the collapsing economy, runaway crime rates, predatory transgenders, unvetted refugees, Planned Parenthood and the “abortion industry,” birtherism and Muslim Brotherhood influence, even the War on Christmas.

To me, the maturation of this seamlessly self confirming alternate universe is the most dangerous development of recent years and the most serious issue of the present day.

Merriam-Webster make a point of not confusing the two.

Bannon doesn’t represent the majority of the country—he’s a POS white supremacist/nationalist. For all intents & purposes whatever his idea of a good post-deconstruction reconstruction might be is sure to look like destruction to the majority of the country. Your effing pedantry is annoying.

Merriam-Webster make a point of not confusing the two.

You are so full of shit, your eyes are brown; since you referenced Merriam-Webster, but couldn’t be arsed to actually give the definition, I’ll do your work for you:

Definition of deconstruct
transitive verb
1
: to examine (as a work of literature) using the methods of deconstruction
2
: to take apart or examine in order to reveal the basis or composition of often with the intention of exposing biases, flaws, or inconsistencies
3
: to adapt or separate the elements of for use in an ironic or radically new way
4
: destroy, demolish [nations that are deconstructing themselves — Jim Hoagland]

deconstructive -tiv\ adjective
deconstructor -tər\ noun

Did You Know?

Deconstruction doesn’t actually mean “demolition;” instead it means “breaking down” or analyzing something (especially the words in a work of fiction or nonfiction) to discover its true significance, which is supposedly almost never exactly what the author intended. A feminist may deconstruct an old novel to show how even an innocent-seeming story somehow depends on the oppression of women. A new western may deconstruct the myths of the old West and show lawmen as vicious and criminals as flawed but decent. Table manners, The Sound of Music, and cosmetics ads have all been the subjects of deconstructionist analysis. Of course, not everyone agrees with deconstructionist interpretations, and some people reject the whole idea of deconstruction, but most of us have run into it by now even if we didn’t realize it.

Since the office and contents are paid for by taxpayers, it is property of taxpayers.

Leases
Rental expenses related to district offices, except for security deposits, are reimbursable. There is no limit on the number and size of district offices a Member may establish. No lease may extend beyond the Member’s elected term. Members must notify the Office of Finance at x57474 in writing when a lease is terminated.

District offices may be located in:

Federal buildings;
Commercial buildings; and
State, county, or municipal buildings.

District office space must be located within a Member’s district unless there is no suitable office space in a federal building in the Member’s district. In that event, a district office may be located in a federal building serving the Member’s district.

Members may not accept free office space from private entities. Private office space must be leased at a fair market value as the result of a bona fide, arms-length, marketplace transaction. The Committee on Ethics has ruled that Members may accept free office space, located in their district, when such space is provided by a federal, state, or local government agency.

What has always bugged me about that one is the nic because of Idaho’s connection to white supremacists in the form of the Aryan Nations:

The origin of Aryan Nations is in the teachings of Wesley A. Swift, a significant figure in the early Christian Identity movement. Swift combined British Israelism, extreme antisemitism and political militancy. He founded his own church in California in the mid-1940s, and he had a daily radio broadcast in California during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1957, the name of his church was changed to the Church of Jesus Christ-Christian, which is used today by Aryan Nations churches.

From the late 1970s until 2001, the Aryan Nations headquarters was located in a 20-acre (8.1 ha) compound 1.8 miles (3 km) north of Hayden, Idaho. There were a number of state chapters, only loosely tied to the main organization. The group ran an annual World Congress of Aryan Nations at Hayden Lake for Aryan Nations members and for members of similar groups. […]

We’re well aware of those definitions, however we’re inferring from his actions what his intent is. Words are not enough to determine intent that’s why we use context in addition to simple definitions to infer meaning from people’s words. Bannon has shown through his actions and his reported belief in the Fourth Turning what the context should be.

The White House only said “it was too early to guess the motive.”
yahoo.com

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A White House spokesman, addressing the fatal shooting of an Indian engineer and the wounding of two other men in Kansas this week, said on Friday any loss of life is tragic but it would be absurd to link the action to President Donald Trump’s rhetoric.

Spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters it was too early to guess at the motive for the incident, in which a man opened fire in a bar, prompting concern that Trump’s “America First” stance on immigration and jobs has fueled a climate of intolerance.

Trump Says That Muslims In US Know Who Potential Terrorists Are
By Allegra Kirkland Published June 13, 2016, 8:01 AM EDT

Donald Trump charged that there were “many, many people” in the United States who are “sick with hate” and willing to carry out terrorist attacks like the mass shooting this weekend at a gay club in Orlando, Florida.

Trump, who was quick to label the shooting an act of “radical Islamic terrorism,” said in a Monday appearance on “Fox and Friends” that American Muslims know who these individuals are.

“We have to be extremely strong,” the presumptive GOP nominee said. “We have to be very strong in terms of looking at the mosques. You know, which a lot of people say oh, we don’t want to do that, we’re beyond that. Brian, that man yesterday was sick with hate. There are many, many people, thousands of people already in our country that are sick with hate. And people that are around him, Muslims know who they are, largely. They know who they are. They have to turn them in. They know who they are. They see them.” […]

BRAT PUPPY UPDATE:

First, he and I took a long nap this afternoon.

He wouldn’t scream or cry for the vet when he poked an prodded.

The vet couldn’t find anything wrong and didn’t want to xray without something specific to xray. He gave us pain meds and sent us on our way. He said it he could have bruised himself when falling off the bed. IF he had broken something he would have shown it when the vet was examining him. Luckily, our vet is also the Emergency Vet, so we can go at the better price all weekend if there is any new development.

Otherwise, Brat Puppy is his old grumpy self at 6 years old.

On to the topic at hand: I cannot watch any CPAC. I want to sleep again sometime.

I will say THAT I know more people who have gunned-up in fear of losing everything they have if the shit hits the fan.

he was of an era that didn’t like religious extremism. Better living thru science and nukes and all that.

Science saved us from Hitler—remember.

Barry Goldwater:

My faith in the future rests squarely on the belief that man, if he doesn’t first destroy himself, will find new answers in the universe, new technologies, new disciplines, which will contribute to a vastly different and better world in the twenty-first century. Recalling what has happened in my short lifetime in the fields of communication and transportation and the life sciences, I marvel at the pessimists who tell us that we have reached the end of our productive capacity, who project a future of primarily dividing up what we now have and making do with less. To my mind the single essential element on which all discoveries will be dependent is human freedom.

more Barry Goldwater:

“I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.”
Said in July 1981 in response to Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell’s opposition to the nomination of Sandra Day O’Connor to the Supreme Court, of which Falwell had said, “Every good Christian should be concerned.” as quoted in Ed Magnuson, “The Brethren’s First Sister,” Time Magazine, (20 July, 1981)

According to John Dean, Goldwater actually suggested that good Christians ought to kick Falwell in the “nuts”, but the news media “changed the anatomical reference.”

I’ve noticed when I’m talking to parents at my daughter’s school’s pick-up and other mundane places that glances at my pin spark comment. Not about it, but usually in support of Trump. I’ve gotten remarks about the horrors of a $15 minimum wage, socialized medicine, the dangers of various Muslims, stuff about Hillary Clinton’s emails, and on and on and ad infinitum.

It’s rather clear to me that wearing the pin makes Trump supporters feel accused, even though I’m nominally only expressing dissent against a German political party that died before I was even born. Openly stating, “I am anti-Nazi” seems to make them ask, “Does he think I’m a Nazi?” So my question is, “Are you?”

About 60 miles west of me. The storm line doesn’t look too bad, but the way it is angled and flowing, it will probably be around for some time.

yep. The watch goes until 2 a.m. I’m hoping it fizzles long before then.

Weird. When I use your link, it goes to cafepress.com

When I type cafepress.com into my browser (Firefox), it goes to cafepress.co.uk
When I type the same into Internet Exploder 11, it goes to the American site.

Apparently my Firefox browser just obtained political asylum in the United Kingdom.

If Trump wants contractors to submit plans for The Wall, wouldn’t you want to give them longer than 2 weeks to plan? I thought the government planned stuff and then put it out to bid, but I guess this will be the best possible way to get a quality product fast and cheap.

There’s fast and cheap and then there’s quality. There is no all three. Np signs they give a shit about quality anyway.

Thank Crom that’s not me, but it’s scary how much it looks like it might have been. The -14, steel pot, and pre-BDU fatigues were all in my short window.
