“There is a climate of intimidation, not just about talking to reporters, but also about communicating with colleagues,” said one official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner did not respond directly to the officials’ statements but said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson aimed to foster an open climate where new ideas are raised and considered on their merits.
“There does have to be some degree of trust among colleagues in order to have those kinds of conversations,” Toner said.
There also is high anxiety in parts of DHS, officials there said.
“The atmosphere has become toxic, and that is not conducive to the work,” said a DHS official on condition of anonymity.

I know 45 hates Obama with the light of 1000 suns, but in a lot of his old tweets coming up (that are ironically prescient and numerous) I feel like there’s a weird undercurrent. It now feels like he was being fed info to say as far back as 2013. It’s possible his cognitive decline really increased over the last few years. Actually, I think they did: the proof of that being the ultimate outcome of the two major post-Watergate scandals - Iran-contra (1987) and (Bill) Clinton (1998), However, the lesson(s) Republicans learned from Watergate seem to be mainly negative ones: viz.:
1. always control the “investigation” phase and its PR.
2. make the investigation focus on “criminality” for Democrats, while dismissing issues for Republicans as “merely politics”
3. use RW media to maximize “outrage”/dismissal as per point 2.
4. use point 3 as leverage to control PR with MSM
5. furiously deflect criticism with false-equivalency/whattaboutism
6. when in doubt, just stonewall.
And it seems (up to now) to have worked fairly well for them: IOKIYAR codified as a bedrock guiding principle for nearly everything.
Again, the final point of this story is that lying about the Russians is not perjury just like getting a blowjob from a bimbo is not cheating on your wife.

Smartest thing to do would be to get fence-sitters out there by playing all the soundbytes and video clips of an incumbent arguing that Hillary needed to be locked up for (insert “scandelous behavior”), then compare that to the silence or consent of said incumbent towards the Trump admin doing the exact same thing. Basically a revival of the “Culture of Corruption” campaign that worked so well in 2006. And if the GOP cry “Foul!,” slap them doubly hard with Trump being on record saying he’d be totally truthful with the voters, then contrast that with the mountain of lies he’s built up in just a year.

Camping in a park in Missouri once, I was searching for down wood for firewood. The park was pretty bare of it, but I saw a rather large pile of it near the edge of the park amongst a large field of plants.
I waded through the plants to get the wood I needed. Most of the way out of the plants was when I realised I had just waded through about fifty feet of uninterrupted poison ivy plants all about three feet tall. (After that incident - and a couple weeks of insanity over the results - I learned to pay better attention.)
Poison ivy finds me, not the other way round. I was walking my mother’s dog in the alley behind her apartment house in Chicago, and the dog (a pit bull) saw something and gave chase, dragging me through a bunch of poison ivy plants in the alley. (Who knew there was poison ivy in the bloody city outside the forest preserves.) Stuff grew up in our backyard in Oklahoma, which I seemed to find every time I mowed the yard (my wife insisted it wasn’t there before I moved in - however, she does not react to the stuff).

In the “Nation/World” section, you won’t find a damn thing about Russia, Sessions, Trump, or anything else, though there are several articles about various Muslim extremist groups.
As I’ve noted here, we don’t get news, we get propaganda. Without any source for news (while there is Internet service in Scottsbluff and Alliance, you can pretty much forget the rest of the Panhandle as its too expensive), it is unsurprising after decades of Christian hate radio, FOX News Channel, and our newspaper that pretty much everyone thinks about politics the same way.

You’ll note it was “thugs” who hassled the reporters and smashed their equipment, not the police. They either were cops out of uniform, or locals who were willing to rough the foreigners up under direction by Party officials and/or the cops. Then, the uniformed police can come in and act like peace keepers.
Chinese cities have another kind of uniformed officer called a “cheng guan” 城管, a local ordinance enforcement officer. The guys hassle street peddlers and food stall owners constantly, sometimes resorting to violence if the people don’t clear out fast enough. They’re universally detested, because street stalls and push carts are the only means of income for most of these people.

There is a short street leading up to the north entrance of our university. A bus stop is nearby. Every year, there’s a line of stalls opposite the bus stop selling fried rice, steamed buns, fresh fruit and vegetables, and other tasty treats — the sellers are cashing in on hungry and poor students, of course. But, periodically, the cheng guan come and clear everyone out. A few months later, everyone is back again.
Not this time, though. Developers are putting up a high rise apartment tower and that part of the sidewalk used by the street stalls is blocked off now. Major bummer, because the fruit I could buy there was better than the local supermarket sold, and cheaper.
Progress sucks, sometimes.

No, not all the folks have college degrees; we have a significant number above average in my village, but that means out of roughly sixty adults total in the village maybe a quarter have college degrees. In the Panhandle at large, that percentage is significantly lower.
Bigotry is learned behaviour. My mother pulled me out of Maryland schools in second grade and moved me to Michigan when my father was stationed there, because of Jim Crow segregation in the schools.
Given time, I suspect that a good amount of bigotry will pass. But to do that, ya gotta have more than one message. Our paper as you note has AP stories. (It has UPI stories as well.) However, the editor is the person who decides which AP or UPI stories to print (hence nothing at all on the Russia fiasco).
If you try to talk to a lot of people outside the two tiny cities (Scottsbluff and Alliance) that don’t have cable service, you will be stared at like you have three heads if you try to claim the GOP seems to be hip deep in Russian ties: They don’t believe it because nothing here tells them about it.
Those of us with such things as Internet are not enough of the population to make a significant dent.
Heck, one of the reasons I have Internet (and pay about 5% of my income for it) is so I can get news from something other than either a hard right wing source or an extreme right wing source.

I was at sea once during a terrible storm; you’d be amazed at how much an aircraft carrier can roll and pitch.
The captain on that particular voyage passed an order banning people from the weather decks due to the danger.
One person from my division decided to go out on an aircraft elevator (the door was not completely closed) to look at the waves. One crashed over the elevator, and he was gone.
Despite the horrendous weather, the ship declared man overboard and launched search parties in helicopters (the seas were too dangerous for motor whaleboats). Never found him.

And I guess Republicans don’t need the Coast Guard to rescue them when they’re on their boats or ships or yachts and get stranded out at sea because the Trump budget calls for more than 10% in cuts to the 5th branch of the military whose missions include not only public safety and protecting the navigation of waters in and around the US, but drug interdiction and stopping illegal entry into the US via waterways. But yeah, tell me again how the GOP and Trump are about making the US secure.
Oh, you mean that Trump’s going to spend $20 billion or $40 billion on a wall that Trump himself said could be circumvented with a rope or ladder. The same wall for which he’s only managed to find $20 million in funding for so far? That barely pays for a quarter mile of wall.
Texas doesn’t want the wall. Their delegation has said as much. The wall would need to be placed well inside the US in places because our treaty with Mexico puts the border squarely in the middle of the Rio Grande, and that’s simply not where you can build a wall. You can’t build a wall through Native American reservations either (and the tribe that is on the border has already said fuck no). Mexico has said fuck no to paying for the wall too. And no one wants a wall through Big Bend National Park either.
But the wall and the security stuff isn’t what’s bothering me. It’s that Trump’s twits are all pushing the moral equivalence bullshit that Hillary is a criminal so ignore what Sessions, Flynn, Page, Manafort, Stone, Pence, and Trump himself have done.
Nope. That’s not how any of this works. GOP spent years trying to pin some kind of crime on Clinton and found nothing. Nothing in Congressional investigations. Nothing anywhere. The FBI didn’t find actionable crimes because there weren’t any. The email mess was not a criminal act.
But if you’re going to complain that the FBI/DOJ/Obama colluded, then what Trump and Sessions have done so far is not only as bad as those actions, but even worse - we’ve got clear evidence of perjury and everyone is lying their asses off on who spoke to the Russians and why and where and how and what. This is a direct national security concern, and Trump’s thoroughly compromised by it. Sessions too - and he’s now the AG despite clearly being out of his league.
If only it stopped there, but no, the Trump twits want to go further to Benghazi. The same Benghazi that Congress spent years and millions of dollars investigating. Now? They don’t even want to investigate Trump and the Russia connections because.. wait, what’d they say? Oh that’s right - because it might contain criminal acts and Congress isn’t prepared or capable of dealing with those.

In 2010 or so our Senator Bennett was coming to my college to talk to students about college affordability. The only people that showed up were myself and the President and VP of the Student Council (both in the Republican group mentioned above). They said that vouchers (and a few other right wing ideas) were great. I then went off for about 20 minutes telling them that would work for rich white kids (me being a white kid with wealthish parents - though I looked like a dirty hippy at that time) and that if they wanted to make college affordable they at to 1) fix the economy at large and 2) use land grant college as they were created - to give free/affordable education to those in their states.
The P and VP of the student council then threatened to kick the group I was volunteering for doing voter registration (COPIRG) because we had a “ideological tint” though I was not there in that facsimile (and COPIRG is non-ideological). They demanded an apology.
… I wrote the letter of apology… the 1st draft was scathing and full of f-bombs… the 2nd draft (the one I sent) was apologetic.

Saw this girl last night at the Sherman Theatre in Stroudsburg Pa with my wife. If you get a chance to see her, don’t pass it up. I’ve followed her for a while and this opportunity came along. Small venue, a old movie theatre. Up in the balcony, while she crossed wires and talked to me with a voice I remember. I was honestly moved. I had tears in my eyes a few times. It’s amazing, and discouraging, that this kind of disgusting, guilt- assuaging death farce is just part of the political landscape in the Idiocracy. If the judicial killers and their political cheerleaders really had the courage of their convictions, Governor Hutchinson would take up his pistol, march straight up to the strapped-down prisoner and shoot him in the forehead. If lethal injection is just and necessary, so is that——-and there is much less chance of botching it. They aren’t willing though. Why not?

LINNÉA CLAESON’S 10 TIPS FOR AVOIDING RAPE:
1. If you see someone who is too intoxicated, do not rape him/her.
2. If you know you will go into aggressive and assault mode when you drink, be careful with alcohol.
3. Do not go home alone at night if you think you might be going to rape someone going alone. Ask a friend to take you home or call and talk to someone all the way to your door so you can get home safely. Better safe than raping someone, as I say.

9. Defence Spray is a classic. As soon as you feel you are in an unsafe situation where you might be sexually assaulting someone rips you off your spray and spray yourself in the eye so that you become disoriented and feeling bad. It gets a little conditioning too, think Pavlos dogs. Best Solution!
10. Review your values, your view of sex and consent, and your self-image and humanity, and above all: Do not act like a fucking idiot.
