In last night’s overnight thread, I loaded it once and music started to play… though there was no obvious video playing. This was in Spy mode, and I only load 25 items. The music eventually stopped, I have no idea which comment could have caused it.

I’m a bit caught up on aesthetics as politics recently, but I feel it’s something to consider.
(note: there is an interesting documentary about art and the NSDAP—the Aesthetics of Doom—that addresses this. It’s also touched on in Eco’s essay, 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackshirt.)
These are people who don’t like complexity, and most especially don’t like context or change of perspective. They pursue confirmation in their emotional lives much like they pursue confirmation in their epistemology: working backwards to find “truth” from what they take to be a priori valid. Most importantly, they operate from the assumption that their feelings are objective, and thus it is a Good for them to feel at ease.
Think about how that must effect how they both consume and create art. What kind of stories will they find accessible, moving? Who can they identify with as a protagonist? How do they address abstraction and the surreal?
Their politics aren’t really politics, just ego-fulfillment—hence the vast conspiracies that are holding them down, and the power fantasies of what they could have when they “win”—and avoiding self-reflection and empathy—everybody else is irrational, emotional, and unworthy. Their art isn’t really art, it’s also ego-fulfillment and avoidance of self-reflection and empathy.
They like banal, sentimental art that makes them feel good. Stuff that makes them think differently, stuff that makes them feel heavier things…no. This is why they’ve latched on to Cultural Bolshevism/Marxism: it makes their aesthetic politics *and* adversarial: to non-conform from a standard set of tropes, styles, and images is to be a moral hazard and/or a psychological deviant. Anybody that presents the world differently is part of a conspiracy to destroy the world.
Of course they like shitty power fantasies about violence and sex. They view their real lives as some kind of pulp-heroic self-narrative, in which they’re both super powerful and put upon, and everybody that stands in their way is majescule-W Wrong and gets what they deserve.

It’s hard to tell if there are people who are seriously inquiring Trump about this because they want to catch him in a lie…or because they seriously believe that he’s the “victim” of a grand conspiracy.
I really hope that this is a case of “lie”, i.e. there was no “wiretap”, or that Trump’s people were either not involved in any investigation or were hugely peripheral to it, and that our Idiot-in-Chief is merely making a fool out of himself (all to easy, sadly) over “fake news”.

“If you look at some of the Trump administration rhetoric about the South China Sea for example, you could easily see them stumbling into a confrontation with China,” Mr Davies said.
The thing with Australia was over the refugee swap deal. As weird of a deal that it was, it did serve some purposes.
Trump in a nativistic outburst trashed the idea. Now the Australians are once again having to agonize over what to do with a bunch of refugees that they’re afraid to let into the country because it will probably encourage a wave of more refugees.

It makes perfect sense, given what we know about Comrade Combover. Much like the Yemen raid, he was probably promised that going quiet for a few days after his “presidential” speech would wipe the Russia matter off the radar for awhile. The press would gush over how awesome his “pivot” was, he’d make the Democrats look like fools for opposing him, and he’d get political capital he could spend with his travel ban EO “revision.”
Instead, the very next day the WaPo blew the lid off the Sessions’ pressure cooker, leading to a recusal that the White House was visibly opposed to. Obama did not have control over both houses for 2 years, he had a filibuster-proof majority for all of 4 months. When he took office, there were 57 Democrats and 2 Independents, which (if you can do basic math) added up to 59 votes. Why? Franken wasn’t seated because Coleman demanded a recount that wasn’t finished until July. Then Kennedy suffered a seizure and never returned to office before his death in September. And Byrd had a bout of illness that saw him gone until July as well. Then Specter switched parties and the DNC had 59 votes again, followed by Paul Kirk being appointed to a temporary term in September after Ted died. So from September 2009 to January 2010 (when Scott Brown took office), Obama had 60 reliable Senate votes.
And in that time, he managed to get the ACA passed and that was the only thing that he ultimately got passed with his “total control.”

So, to occupy my idle-braincycles, I’ve transitioned from Solitaire (some decent apps on the Chrome store) to playing dominoes (excellent stand-alone app in the Chrome store.)
Such frivolities as they are, the also illustrate to me how little we can change an outcome, once a choice has been made.
Take a game of “Block”, one of the common games using dominoes. With 4 players, each player only gets 5 “bones”, which means only 20 of the 28 in the pack are actually in play. So often a player may have only one choice of a domino to play. Once the first player starts and chooses the opening block, there are only a small set of possible outcomes in the universe of the game.
And even as a player with more than one possible play, sometimes it really does not matter what choice one makes, in regards to the outcome of the game.
The opening play sets the course for the entire game.
Just something to think about…

Well then, you’re probably REALLY going to hate the gush of toxic bullshit the Administration is no doubt going to push on the country via its new “VOICE” program: yep, our tax dollars are going to be used to try to swamp the media with horror-stories about Evil Criminal Illegal Alien Scumbags, and the ghastly crimes they have perpetrated on innocent American citizens (hopefully they MAY try to mitigate the hatemongering by making a few of the victims people of color - maybe: we’ll have wait and see).
