So, checking the forecasts, it looks like Tuesday’s Noreaster is going to be a big one.

Probability maps suggest 90-100% certainty of 12+ inches across a significant portion of the NYC metro area from northern NJ into lower Hudson Valley to CT and including significant parts of NYC proper.

Most of the forecasts are saying 12+ inches, though a few forecasts are suggesting 1-2 feet.

The key will be temperatures. If it’s cold enough, then you get a lighter-weight snowfall with greater accumulations. If it’s warmer, it could be less accumulation, but could mean more downed trees because the snow is heavier.

Either way, it’s gonna be a mess.

Good thing that Trump’s preliminary budget is going to shred the NOAA, EPA, and FEMA.

Because we don’t need to know weather/climate changes, protecting water/air quality, and disaster response.

I differentiated because the forecasts were looking at different things.

The probability forecast was for 12 inches plus. It didn’t have a higher accumulation total probability whereas the forecasts being put together by local forecasters were setting a range.

Bharara was investigating Russian mob and potential connections to Trump could have come up. He was also investigating Cuomo and NYS legislators for corruption. He wasn’t afraid to go after people from either party.

Cuomo killed the Moreland Commission when it seemingly went too close to Cuomo interests, particularly with the Buffalo billion and the SUNY Polytech scandals.

That’s no coincidence. Any of our nation’s rivals or enemies are likely to time whatever aggression, events when Trump is away from the White House because they know he’s least likely to be prepared for those actions.

Whereas Obama and his predecessors showed interest/understanding of foreign policy and how government needs to work to protect the nation. Trump thinks Infowars is more reliable than the CIA, NSA and other parts of the USG.

Russia will invade and occupy Ukraine on Saturday, and by Monday Bullshit Spice will be telling the press that it was all due to Democrats because Trump totally did not drop the ball. In fact, he knew what Russia was going to do, but he was held back by the “Deep State” and that’s why we need to move forward with the purge.

In Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, the end of the world comes about because one small crystal of ice-9 is accidentally dropped into the ocean and all water on earth instantly crystalizes into this fictional ice-9.

We’re seeing an all too real political version of this right now. Trump’s open embrace of fascist white nationalism is the single crystal of ice-9. The ocean here is the well-programmed pig people of Fox News.

Now we have POTUS* Trump at the head of an American fascist party, and we’re going to see if this is the end of the world or not.

I’ve got some beef short ribs I need to make today but I’ve suddenly come down with a case of the lazy Sundays.

I usually always sear them stovetop before the long braise in the oven. I’m thinking about trying the oven broiling method instead of the sear; then braise as usual.

I’ve seen it done a lot on TV with great results, but they were always restaurant-grade ovens.

Pollster is a polling aggregator, like Real Clear Politics, but unlike RCP, it allows you to create your own data in a number of different ways. For example, when looking at Trump’s overall approval numbers, I take out Rasmussen because they are a ridiculous outlier (they’ve always had a steep GOP lean, but with Trump it’s almost off the charts).

I created this particular chart by taking out all but Republicans, whether in the “adult,” “registered voters,” and “likely voters.” I also reduced the smoothing.

Any way you slice it, what does it tell you that Trump - TRUMP - has such a high approval rating amongst his own party. From what I understand, none of his recent predecessors could boast numbers like that.

On the other hand, if he does walk, he may end up improving his fitness level. Perhaps we should chip in for that scooter for him?

Snakes are good. I do worry a bit about rattlesnakes when out hiking around here because they are pretty used to people and may or may not be in a hurry to quit sunning themselves in the middle of the trail when you come along. I really don’t want to step on one.

A blizzard means winds in excess of 35mph for 3 hours sustained.

They’re projecting wind gusts in excess of 50-60mph, and those high winds also mean whiteout conditions with visibility of a 1/4 mile or less.

In other words, hazardous weather conditions that makes going outside, let alone driving, pretty dangerous.

12-18 inches of snow is going to make for a difficult Tuesday. High winds increase chances for power outages, especially along coastal areas.

Blue state Trump supporters? Copperheads

In the 1860s, the Copperheads comprised a vocal faction of Democrats in the Northern United States of the Union who opposed the American Civil War, wanting an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. Republicans started calling anti-war Democrats “Copperheads”, likening them to the venomous snake. Those Democrats accepted the label, reinterpreting the copper “head” as the likeness of Liberty, which they cut from Liberty Head large cent coins and proudly wore as badges.

Fellow scaly things!

I’ve been known to jump and scramble when I heard one rattle, but I’ve also been known to creep closer for a better look. I’m not good enough at IDing anything without a rattle.

Pro tips:

A snake can only strike half its length. A BIG Copperhead is 4’ long. From three feet away, you can easily see if a snake has cat eyes or round pupils. All indigenous poisonous snakes have vertical slits EXCEPT for the Coral Snake. Then it’s “red touch yellow, kill a fellow, red touch black, friend of Jack.”

Snake venom is largely hemotoxic in the US. Think of it as extremely strong Drano. It blows cell walls to pieces. Coral Snake venom is neurotoxic, like a cobra’s. It stops your autonomic nervous system, killing you by suffocation. A couple of rattler species, like the Mojave Green, have hemotoxic venom with a smaller neurotoxic component.

Many non-poisonous snakes rattle their tails when disturbed. A big Rat Snake can sound as loud as a rattlesnake if it is on dry forest duff.

The Hognose Snake can spread its neck ribs like a cobra and make a really loud hiss. If that doesn’t work, it’ll roll over and play dead.

The only really mean indigenous poisonous snakes are the Timber Rattlesnake and the Water Moccasin (aka Cottonmouth). Most others, especially Copperheads will get away from as you fast as they can.

re: #194 thedopefishlives

Odds are that it happens in Texas, Louisiana, or Mississippi. They already have lax regulations (see West Texas for starters), though we could get a rail disaster most anywhere given railroads’ refusal to put new double-lined tanker cars into service to replace the old single layer cars (which increases puncture/release risk), and slow implementation of PTC.

I thought the human reactions to the Arrival felt very real. Empty classrooms, people running, glued to their media sources, etc. And I enjoyed the FILTHY LIBURL HOLLYWOD jibes at Fox and lunatic media. :)

I saw it with friends at the local small theater a week before the oscars - they make it a point to watch all the nominated films every year, and I tagged along - and we all felt that the big turn in the story at the end was disappointing. I liked all the communicating-with-aliens stuff, but the metaphysical wrap-up was disjointed and not in the spirit of the first 3/4ths of the story IMO.

Still good overall, though.

I’ve been thinking that the reason Ryan & Co. wrote their bill so that the damaging, life-destroying effects don’t begin in 2018 is to protect their seats in midterm elections. This way, they can claim to have fulfilled their pledge to destroy the PPACA while not mentioning that many of those who vote for them in 2018 will lose their healthcare coverage after November 2018.

If you’re wondering how they stay sane and stuff, my oldest is doing pretty well. He’s close enough to Des Moines to go in there for some of the bigger things. Indianola, while not huge by Dallas standards, has it’s own movie theater, two grocery stores, and a number of restaurants. Looking at Grinnell, the town, it looks like they have similar options. And I just found an incentive for my son: There’s a comic book store right off campus.

Edit: My oldest managed to stay sane enough that he’s going into the University of Kentucky PhD program in the fall, and they’re paying him. I am so jealous.

In a wide-ranging interview Sunday at her home in Alpine, where she lives with her husband — a possible nominee for U.S. solicitor general — and their four children, Conway, who managed Trump’s presidential campaign before taking the job as one of the president’s closest advisers, suggested that the alleged monitoring of activities at Trump’s campaign headquarters at Trump Tower in Manhattan may have involved far more than wiretapping.

“What I can say is there are many ways to surveil each other,” Conway said as the Trump presidency marked its 50th day in office during the weekend. “You can surveil someone through their phones, certainly through their television sets — any number of ways

Conway went on to say that the monitoring could be done with “microwaves that turn into cameras,” adding: “We know this is a fact of modern life.”

I haven’t seen the bill come through my insurance so I can’t figure out why it’s so much. I don’t even begin to totally understand this:

Russian Espionage Piggybacks on a Cybercriminal’s Hacking

To the F.B.I., Evgeniy M. Bogachev is the most wanted cybercriminal in the world. The bureau has announced a $3 million bounty for his capture, the most ever for computer crimes, and has been trying to track his movements in hopes of grabbing him if he strays outside his home turf in Russia.

He has been indicted in the United States, accused of creating a sprawling network of virus-infected computers to siphon hundreds of millions of dollars from bank accounts around the world, targeting anyone with enough money worth stealing — from a pest control company in North Carolina to a police department in Massachusetts to a Native American tribe in Washington.

In December, the Obama administration announced sanctions against Mr. Bogachev and five others in response to intelligence agencies’ conclusions that Russia had meddled in the presidential election. Publicly, law enforcement officials said it was his criminal exploits that landed Mr. Bogachev on the sanctions list, not any specific role in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee.

A flow chart of all this stuff would look like a ball of yarn after a kitten got ahold of it.

“As opposed to the $53.22 I paid last Tuesday to see a PA for a diabetes checkup.”

I know what you’re talking about. I also have diabetes and a few other serious medical conditions which means I have to see several doctors. Every time I go to have my diabetes checked, the co-pay is $68.00. This sometimes happens twice a month. My primary care doctor wants to make sure I don’t have to have heart surgery like my mom had to have due to her diabetes or have to go on dialysis like my older brother did due to his diabetes. The reason my co-pay is as high as it is is because the GOPers, who control the state government here in GA, won’t lift one finger to help make any type of insurance more affordable in the state. They love themselves some insurance lobbyists and take advantage of every free anything they offer to them.

None of these things matter any longer. Trump reps have said many times that he can do anything he d*mn well pleases, and none of us has the right to question him. If PBO had done something like this, GOPers in Congress would have vilified him, then, they would have sued him, but they remain eerily silent when Trump does sh*t they know is wrong.

First Aid Kit - You are the Problem Here (Audio)

The Local SE arkle on the background: First Aid Kit just released a furious anti-rape anthem: listen here

Lyrics (dunno quality) from the YT page:

[Verse 1]
I am so sick and tired of this world
All these women with their dreams shattered
From some man’s sweaty, desperate touch
God damn it, I’ve had enough
When did you come to think refusal was sexy?
Can’t you see the tears in her eyes?
How did you ever think you had the right to
Put your entitled hands up her thighs?
[Chorus]
You are the problem here
You are the problem here
No one made you do anything
You are the problem here
You are the problem here
No one made you do anything
[Post-Chorus]
And I And I hope you fucking suffer
[Verse 2]
Do you really expect anyone to feel sorry
That you ruined your own life?
You did it when you thought you had the right to
Put your entitled hands up her thighs
And we don’t need to be diminished
To sisters or daughter or mothers
I am a human being, that is how you act to me
[Chorus]
You are the problem here
You are the problem here
No one made you do anything
That’s not how liquor works
You are the problem here
You are the problem here
No one made you do anything
[Post-Chorus]
And I
And I
And I
And I
And I
And I hope you fucking suffer
