The song “Well Loved” was inspired by The Pillow Book by Sei Shōnagon. Sei was a Japanese author, poet and a court lady who served the Empress Teishi (Sadako) around the year 1000 during the middle Heian period. The Pillow Book was introduced to me by my dear friend and musical collaborator Aya Nishina, who the song is dedicated to. I was very taken with Sei’s Pillow Book and her delightful observations of the everyday world around her.

Well Loved (lyrics & music by Becca Stevens, inspired by The Pillow Book by Sei Shōnagon b. 966-1017, translated by Meredith McKinney)

They say the mourning dove
Can be comforted
By showing her a mirror
When she’s longing for her mate.
Oh it pains me to picture them alone
When they’re separated, and cannot hear the call!

To be loved
Is as rare as gold,
But to be well-loved–
There’s nothing can compare.

The heron looks unlovable
Yet will not sleep alone,
Taking turns on winter nights
To keep each other warm.
Oh it pains me to picture them alone
On the coldest night, without each other.

To be loved
Is as rare as gold,
But to be well-loved–
There’s nothing can compare.

Here’s a mirror for your love
Here’s a mirror…

I did not read the previous thread, but this is very worrying, especially if it becomes a serious trend. Besides the whole issue of overpopulation, this is the essence of white nationalism — children of other races are demeaned.

This notion is one of the underlying motivations of the Quiverfull cult, among others. Some white people are worried about higher birthrates among non-whites, so they figure they’d better increase their productivity to keep ahead.

It’s also part of the “America is a (white) Christian nation” nonsense pushed by David Barton and other Christianists.

Yes, it is worrying.

Now, however, that Trump has brought all this out into the open, the bigots have nowhere to hide. So they now have to Trumpet their bigotry as some sort of high ground.

I’m hoping this will all blow up in their faces.

There is still disagreement about the scale of the problem, and the data aren’t always reliable.

There are more than enough males to keep the earth very crowded in the future.

One of the insights of genomics applied to evolution is how few of our ancestors actually continue to survive in our DNA. Most individual’s DNA goes extinct within a few generations even if they have children.

Now watch how the migrant crisis triggers a Bottleneck event with whites in Europe seeing as they already have a low birth rate compared to the migrants who have 5 - 6 kids. Oh wait, was that racist?… Yep, maybe to white people who will suffer a genocide

“Sort of disappointed to see I have a pretty boring genome […] with all my ancestry from Europe” —- what an imbecile! How on earth can somebody so smart and educated start parroting ideological platitudes?!? Lynn Jorde, it is exactly because you are of Scandinavian ancestry, with a hereditary advantage in the modern world (ranging from g factor to good looks), that you are who you are right now.

Note that as usual the deniers latch onto mainstream mistakes. Like in this instance, where the fucking idiots from the Travel Channel took the Auschwitz photo, photoshopped it and used it to illustrate the 1912 Dresden, Ohio train crash. Deniers will do what they do, but the TC people are utter moronic imbeciles.

wheat-dogg  Mar 12, 2017 • 11:26:44pm

re: #21 freetoken

Sensing a trend?

Yup.

Preaching to the choir here, but an influx of migrants is not genocide unless the migrants make it a point to kill people as they enter a region. Despite reports to the contrary, the recent migrants into the EU have not been killing white Europeans en masse.

A bottleneck event would be a major catastrophe — earthquake, flood, tsunami, meteor strike, pandemic, war — wiping out a large number of people at once. The last Ice Age would also qualify, though its effects took thousands of years. The DNA of the victims would largely be eliminated from the gene pool.

Immigration is not quite the same thing.*

* With certain notable exceptions, such as the European invasion of the Americas.

Ugh. I listened to the first 1-2 minutes, up to the “spoon-fed by liberals” BS.

As an amateur genealogist, it irks me when I hear people state their ancestry as some kind of pedigree, “I’m part German, Swiss, and French, and my ggf was Cherokee,” as if those national distinctions were immutable in time. Setting aside the Cherokee (or whatever her Native American heritage is), the borders of the European nations were in constant flux for more than a thousand years. Alsace-Lorraine is but one example. So, to say “I’m part French” really means your last known ancestor came to America from France. That ancestor’s own grandparents might have been Bavarian, or Czech.

Incidentally, many white people in America are strangely not ashamed of claiming Native American heritage (even when they have none), but are more circumspect in admitting African heritage. See which, Melungeons.

Speaking of latching onto irrelevancies. I think the initial video and the DOJ’s report are quite clear. Brown did rob the store, did assault the clerk and then did assault the police officer in the car, hitting him and trying to grab his gun. Using Brown as a symbol of the BLM was a big mistake.

Sorry, I went off onto a tangent there.

I know there are conservative Christian women, such as this poor lost soul, Ayla, who believe it is their Godly duty to produce as many kids as possible and to obey the mandates of all the men in their lives (father, husband, pastor, etc.). So, sure, the author of the tweet in #1 could in fact be female, but there are also plenty of men who would fake being a complacent woman just to support that particular belief system.

33
wheat-dogg  Mar 13, 2017 • 12:14:36am

re: #31 JordanRules

Yeah, that’s a thing I’ve noticed. Why do you think that is?

Americans have romanticized Native Americans to a large extent, while completely misunderstanding Native culture and European colonists’ responsibility in nearly wiping them out. It’s part of the “noble savage” notion originating in 17th century Europe — that “primitive” peoples were somehow more pure and innocent than the “civilized” peoples of Europe.

Also, the Native people were never enslaved by whites, AFAIK, so there would be no disgrace in admitting Native heritage.

In a racist’s hierarchy, Native Americans are “better” than African-Americans. So, having some Native ancestry would not be as embarrassing as admitting African heritage, because of the whole slavery thing. (I suppose. I don’t claim to be an expert in the BS that is white supremacy.) You have to remember that white supremacists believe there is a hierarchy of races, with blacks at the bottom. I’m not sure if the “noble savage” trope ever included Africans kidnapped from their homelands.

It’s also worth noting that most people claiming Native ancestry probably have none at all. Often, it’s a family legend passed without question from one generation to the next. Elizabeth Warren is just one notable example.

re: #33 wheat-dogg

Racial hierarchy was what immediately popped for me as well. The dark continent, the savages and what not.

The slavery angle and romantic notions fit in well. Current power dynamics might play a part too. The separation and extreme mainstream power deficit of Native Americans versus the integration and growing power of African Americans makes one easier and more beneficial to latch onto and exploit for the victim part of their narrative.

This… paradox (?) … has often been remarked upon.

Essentially, “freedom” doesn’t have meaning outside of context.

In the American experiment, “freedom” means one can associate with whomever one wants… that you can make political speech without government interference… and so on.

Some might want to go all purist on the idea of “freedom” but that is not how so-called free societies exist. All societies which today experience much liberty pretty much regulate a great deal of human activity. “Freedom” never is pure.

One of the interesting things about Fischer’s Albion’s Seed is the case he makes for multiple traditions of the meaning of ‘freedom’ in the US, such that we can all agree that it’s great but disagree intensely on what liberty is in practice. Some people (the Thiel types) honestly think that any restrictions on their actions are intolerable attacks on their freedom, and some are totally happy to accept rigid community autocracy but reject external government.

Unlimited freedom is anarchy which is unpleasant. Absolute order is tyranny which is just as unpleasant.

So a fair and just society balances the two, and like all balancing acts requires constant work.

It also helps if you don’t look down. ;)

I started reading the Moral Landscape just the other day. I believe one of the points is that you can’t allow what is morally correct to you to be used as a steam roller against you. In the case of extremists you have to be willing to fight them off to protect what is right. Ie; hate speech should not be protected with the same vigor or rules used to protect free speech.

Greets and saluts from the snowpocalypse-imminent NYC metro area. The latest projections?

Yeah, if you look closely at that snowfall forecast, nearly everyone in the NYC metro area is going to get 20+ inches (less on Long Island). For my own town, it’s looking like 20+ is a solid bet.

With the additional snowfall up through Boston and New England, this storm is likely to have significant disruptions for the next few days. It’s possible that it might fall in the top 10 worst snowstorm events according to the NESIS scale (which factors in snowfall, people affected, and disruption levels).

Air travel is going to be screwed for a significant part of the country over the next few days too. Same with NEC rail travel.

Stay safe folks!

I LOL’d at this headline.

Malaysia tycoon in bed with Trump frets over Vancouver deal

Malaysian property developer Tiah Joo Kim got way more than he bargained for when he signed a licensing deal to use the Trump brand on the Trump International Hotel and Tower that is opening Tuesday in the Canadian city of Vancouver.

Prices for condominiums in the sleek building designed by one of Canada’s top architects have set records. But police are expecting protests by many who object to having a major Trump-branded property as a city landmark when the president’s two oldest sons officially open the tower on Tuesday.

Joo Kim’s Holborn Development struck the licensing deal before Trump’s political ascent. He says he’s now “locked” into his licensing agreement, with no legal grounds to back out of the deal, whose terms have not been released.

“There would be severe legal implications,” he said in a recent interview.

I love those traditional values that elected a thrice married, minimum twice adulterer to lead their traditional values party.

As for the large families - that is what eats the government welfare and denigrates our planet. It takes zero brains to breed, it takes intelligence to know when to stop.

OUTVETS will be allowed to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston after the council reversed their decision that had previously barred them.

bostonglobe.com

I am with my State Senator on this one and have made other plans for my family for Sunday.

Before the invitation was extended and accepted Friday night, state Senator Linda Dorcena Forry, whose district includes South Boston, said she will not join the parade regardless.

“It is unacceptable to exclude anyone in our community. But the council has chosen to exclude the best of us: Veterans who have bravely served our country and put their lives on the line for our freedoms,” the senator said.

“I know this community does not share these ignorant beliefs. It is shameful that nine individuals would deny veterans the opportunity to march in a parade.”

Trump wants faster growth. The Federal Reserve is trying to keep the economy from overheating and maintaining a steady growth that has low inflation.

Trump’s not going to be happy about that. Of course, Trump doesn’t know how the economy works any more than Ryan, Chaffetz, and the rest of the GOP knows how the health care industry works. They’re all just look for how best to loot the economy and government so rich folks can get richer while everyone else falls further behind.

Oh, and the CBO scoring for the #Trumpcare aka #GOPDontCare should come out anytime now. The GOP has spent the past few days attacking the CBO as partisan (it isn’t), that the director is awful (he was picked and approved by HHS Price himself!) and that you shouldn’t trust the numbers the CBO puts out (you should).

There’s a damned good reason the GOP doesn’t want anyone to see, let alone trust the CBO numbers. They’re going to show what the JCT, S&P, AMA, AARP, and other industry types already know - that the GOP’s plan is an absolute disaster for budgetary purposes, for health care insurance purposes, and it’s all to further tax cuts for those who are more able to afford care while reducing care, coverage, and access to millions.

The interviewer actually asked Ellison why people should care about voter suppression when money in politics is the only real issue. I’m assuming that since it was a TYT interview that it wasn’t an ironic question. Ellison’s answer isn’t great - it’s kind of like he can’t believe that someone is asking him such a stupid question.

“Money in politics” is a joke. The Bros don’t have a problem with money in politics, they certainly don’t have a problem with rich celebs supporting candidates like Bernie. No, like most things these days, “money in politics” is really code for “the ‘wrong’ people are donating to politics.”

I’ve spent the last week thinking about the bomb threats against the JCCs. I’m pretty sure it’s an autodial bot but somebody had to code it and turn it loose. And if that is the case, then whoever did that wouldn’t be able to stay quiet about it, they would have to brag about it on some forum.

So the question is, are the FBI, ATF and whatever task force is investigating these threats, monitoring forum like stormer, reddit, 4chan, where the perp might hang out? Does law enforcement even know about the “deep web”?

207
lawhawk  Mar 13, 2017 • 9:30:23am

re: #206 The Vicious Babushka

The FBI knows about the Deep Web, but one of the programs Obama started to go after domestic terror threats (CVE group) has been refocused under Trump to fixate on radical Islamic Terrorists (Betelgeuse rule in effect!). So, the odds that they’re tracking who’s involved has been reduced because Trump wants to focus on a more remote threat (foreign terrorists infiltrating the US in the name of Islam) than one that’s been around all along (white supremacists, domestic terrorists, KKK-type groups, neo Nazis, and sovereign citizens groups, etc.).

A lot of doctors don’t know how much the drugs they prescribe cost, or how much of their own costs are picked up by insurance.

You’d be surprised at how much of the payment/cost stuff is left up to the medical billing specialists, whose job it is to figure out the billing codes to make sure they get paid/reimbursed.

Also too…legalize the weed.

The NFL hired Marty Saez, retired SAC DEA Miami in the 1990’s to monitor NFL trainers’ usage of controled substances. At that time, it was pretty much anything goes, on the sidelines, or at the training facility. “This will ease your pain, take this bottle home with you.” No paper work, just hand it out.

I sat in on some of Marty’s visits to team trainers while he set up the new drug protocols.

After the initial report, some of the NFL teams subsequently replaced their trainers.

Trump’s campaign showed that he was racist, misogynist, corrupt and incompetent. Those were the only available facts about Trump from the campaign, since everything he said was just bullshit.

Trump voters must have liked one or more of these 4 features, and I think it was the racism and misogyny.

Even at the most generous, they decided that none of those four elements were deal breakers. Regardless of their justifications, they clearly demonstrated they were wiling to tolerate open racism, open misogyny, open xenophobia, open corruption, and open incompetence.

Afternoon update on Noreaster for NYC metro:

DC snowfall looks very sketchy. There’s a very tight gradient between 3-5 inches and 10+ that depends on a track that meanders 25 miles east or west because of the track. In fact, it’s possible that one side of DC could have minor accumulations and the other side gets walloped.

I hope nothing bad ever happens to these women. I hope their husbands never go to prison, or lose their jobs, or become disabled.

The people in the center of the US who us coastal elites are supposed to reach out to are the ones who are so insulated from the rest of the world that they’re scared of it (and the GOP helps reinforce that fear). The same people most afraid of Muslim sharia law are also the ones least likely to ever encounter a Muslim - or live somewhere that is 90+ white.

Trump wants higher growth, because that’s what he needs to even get close to balancing his BS budget. At the current rate of growth, with low inflation, we get a comfortable rate of growth that doesn’t kill small businesses or individuals trying to buy stuff. Higher growth leads to higher inflation, which means wages will fall further behind - an increasing wage gap.

Trump possibly knows, but doesn’t care. His supporters don’t care either. They’ll just see this as another reason to want to get rid of the Fed.

Elizabeth Warren is just one notable example.

oh yes, native americans most assuredly were enslaved by whites. the problem is that it turned out they died rather quickly when compelled to work 12 hours a day in a boiling sun working on cotton, tobacco, sugar cane. Black people became the slave of choice because after surviving a trip across the Atlantic, chained to a ship deck, genetics pretty much killed off any weak ones. And black skin and a brutally humid home climate also worked in their favor for life under a boiling sun.

It seemed to be just another normal morning in New Mexico history teacher Galen Blum’s seventh-grade classroom at El Camino Real Academy, a dual-language school on the south side of Santa Fe that serves about 880 students, the majority of whom speak both Spanish and English.

But as Blum stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at 8 a.m. that Wednesday last month — a daily ritual for the school — she noticed she was standing alone. Her class of about 20 students remained seated and silent, their faces impassive.

They had decided to not recite the pledge that morning because they no longer felt that it spoke to them.

“It’s a good pledge,” one of the students told her. “But we’re not living it in America.”

That was three weeks ago. Since that time, the students — as well as students in the school’s other three seventh-grade classrooms — have mostly sat out when others recited the pledge.

Steve King (R-IA4) doubles down on his Nazi tweet yesterday on television:

When CNN host Chris Cuomo confronted King about the tweet, the congressman chose to double down on the message.

“This is being condemned by many regions of American politics and citizenry,” Cuomo said about King’s tweet. “What did you mean?”

“Well, of course, I meant exactly what I said,” King replied. “You cannot rebuild your civilization with somebody else’s babies. You’ve got to keep your birth rate up. … You need to teach your children your values and in doing so, then you can grow your population, and you can strengthen your culture, you can strengthen your way of life.”

After pushing back against King several times (noted in the article), King coughed up this hairball:

“I’d like to see an America that’s just so homogenous that we look a lot the same from that perspective,” King said. “I think there’s been far too much focus on race, especially in the last eight years. And I want to see that put behind us.”

There is an element of truth in what you say, but I have some quibbles and clarifications.

Genetics don’t kill people. Slaveholders kill people. Many issues come into play, it is not simply a matter of genetics.

Some indigenous North Americans kept slaves, both before the Europeans arrived, and on occasion, there were European slaves.

I have heard of the Mexican border referred to as a ‘Darwinian filter’.

Yes to all of this. He is representative and I feel threatened by that. I fear they will eventually literally try to erase much of Obama from history and he is so important to me and so many.

European diseases (that the Native Americans had no immunity to) killed more than half the indigenous population, even before any military action or enslavement went after the remainder.

I knocked the jiggler off one time mid-cook , got beef stew on the ceiling. Now that was a fine mess to clean!

Trump, Ryan, and the Republicans working hard to make sure that Trump’s is the most corrupt administration since Harding.

Corruption in Harding’s administration will be nothing compared to what Trump will end up doing.

There really is no longer an argument to deny one simple fact: Today’s GOP are White Supremacists.

They have been all my life. (Ref: Ronald Reagan announcing his candidacy in Philadelphia, Mississippi.)

That was a dog whistle; today they’re using trumpets (pun intended).

For that I would blame the carriers of the diseases who brought them in.

At first, it wasn’t on purpose. They had no idea that would happen.

Distributing infected blankets in the 18th century was on purpose; they got the idea from what happened accidentally in the 16th century.
