Another Loss for Trump: Hawaii Judge Denies Request to Limit Muslim Ban Injunction

Trump loses the first fight over his second attempt at an unconstitutional order
Politics • Views: 33,254

The Trump Justice Department filed a motion asking federal Judge Derrick Watson to limit his injunction against Trump’s second attempt at banning Muslims and refugees from entering the US, but today in Hawaii Judge Watson denied this request.

He’s losing every legal fight so far over his unconstitutional bigoted attempt to force a ban on Muslim immigration on America.

“The Motion … asks the Court to make a distinction that the Federal Defendants’ previous briefs and arguments never did,” Watson wrote in his new order. “As important, there is nothing unclear about the scope of the Court’s order….(“Defendants…are hereby enjoined from enforcing or implementing Sections 2 and 6 of the Executive Order across the Nation.”). The Federal Defendants’ Motion is DENIED.”

Next up, this second try at a Muslim ban will be heard by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and it’s very likely that Judge Watson’s decision will be upheld.

Spoilers for episode 4 of Iron Fist:

I understand Danny is a bleeding heart, but he’s also an idiot. Pricing a medicine at 10 times its production value, at most, is a bit of an assholish thing to do (and they wouldn’t make it into the recent top 10 list of medical price hikes), but research is also needed. He could have negotiated down the price, covering for new research into the illness in question.

This is a strength in the writing that I hope they keep using.

This afternoon, I painted this.

It’s on a sheet of 12 x 16 Arches oil paper, using Sennelier Grande oil pastels. I limited myself to a palette of orange, orange yellow and blue. (The orange and orange yellow was easy, I only have three in the Grande size. We’re going to rectify that.) After I’d finished laying down kind of an idea of the color, I turned the sheet upside down and laid down more color. I finished off by using a colorless burnisher. I’m actually kind of pleased with it. My major learning from this was to use wider tape on the border.

Because that worked out so well for Florida when they did it.

Of the 4,086 applicants who scheduled drug tests while the law was enforced, 108 people, or 2.6 percent, failed, most often testing positive for marijuana. About 40 people scheduled tests but canceled them, according to the Department of Children and Families, which oversees Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, known as the TANF program.

The numbers, confirming previous estimates, show that taxpayers spent $118,140 to reimburse people for drug test costs, at an average of $35 per screening.

The state’s net loss? $45,780.

Thoughts on the first four episodes of Iron Fist.

I watched the first few episodes of Iron Fist and am underwhelmed so far. It’s not a terrible show by any stretch but so far it doesn’t hold up really at all in comparison to Daredevil Season 1, Jessica Jones or Luke Cage. None of the characters are all that compelling or likable and all are presented with little to no depth.

My biggest complaint, coming off Luke Cage, is that the larger exposition portions don’t make up for their slowing of the plot by grounding it in an immersive historical context. They’re mostly just boring, or serve to spoon feed the audience bits of info like psych drugs mess with Danny’s chi or yeah his childhood friends are unbelievably huge douches now. There’s a persistent failure to craft the setting and treat it like a character in itself. Cage brought Harlem to life on the screen. Jessica Jones borrowed the already gritty Hell’s Kitchen setting from Daredevil and made it even more psychologically complex and morose. Iron Fist really misses an opportunity here to establish the same early on with the eerie disconnect between the homeless existence in New York City and the surrounding wealth. I can see that coming but I think they missed a huge opportunity early on.

So far I have no idea what’s really driving Danny. I know he was trained by “warrior monks” to become a “living weapon.” That’s a thin patina of backstory, he has no clear motivation or mission beyond the whole “enemy of the Hand” thing that was apparently drilled into him at Kun Lun. I’m sure that’s coming into play very soon but it doesn’t really feel personal compared to say the detailed, anguished origin that over time motivated Matt Murdoch to become Daredevil. I mean, Danny’s biggest personal struggle as far as I can tell is that he’s incredibly naïve and a shit judge of character. Not exactly compelling.

I’ll keep watching because I can see to an extent where it’s going, but I think it’ could’ve done a much better job early on establishing the its merits.

re: #30 goddamnedfrank

I have watched the first 3 episodes. At times I find it entertaining, but there is a disjointedness to the whole thing that I can’t quite work out yet.

The main character acts way too childlike for his age. I gather this is intentional, as inside he’s still the small boy who lost his parents at a tender age. I see a lot of critics of this show not liking the main character, but I think these people are not just grokking the self-discovery path that he is apparently on.

Mostly this series strikes me as a bit less grandiose than some of the other Marvel attempts in recent years.

I still prefer the British show Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, probably because their actors are chosen for their acting ability, rather than just being sexy young bodies.

re: #30 goddamnedfrank

I’ve only watched the first two, but I read your comments anyway. Turns out you didn’t reveal much about #3 and 4, if there’s anything there to reveal.

Danny is still a child, mentally. I guess being raised by monks to be some kind of superweapon stunts your maturation into adulthood.

Case in point, from episode 2: the doctor meets with Danny to discuss his potential release after the 72-hour hold. Everything is going fine, until Danny volunteers that Kun Lun exists only in the astral plane, and appears on the earthly plane every 15 years. Plus, guess what doc? The monks told me I have a superpower, the Iron Fist, and my job is to be the enemy of the Hand!! Is that cool, or what? Can I go now?

Someone less childlike (as in anyone older than, say, 7) would have clammed up about the astral plane and superhero shit, even considering all the Avengers stuff serving as backstory. It appears Danny doesn’t know about it anyway.

Regarding SS-GB, looking at the IMDB score for my own demographic, it appears rather strange distribution:

Votes Percentage Rating
16 11.0% 10
15 10.3% 9
35 24.0% 8
27 18.5% 7
6 4.1% 6
13 8.9% 5
9 6.2% 4
9 6.2% 3
9 6.2% 2
7 4.8% 1
Arithmetic mean = 6.5. Median = 7

When I see these kind of ratings I tend to believe that the show must be a niche product, appealing to only particular tastes.

Husband in the story asked just that. Answer was, “I don’t know, but I know they AIN’T elephants!!” Her conviction and repetition was enough to sway the husband somehow.

I actually experienced something somewhat similar to this, years and years ago when I worked in a supermarket.

A woman had some loose garlic in a clear plastic produce bag, but when I keyed it in, she insisted they were Vidalia onions o_O I was like, uh, nooo…but she kept on insisting, even when I pulled up the labeled produce photos on my terminal screen (they were full-color LCD panels, so there’s no way you could NOT tell what item was what).

I was in total disbelief, wondering if she was crazy, stupid, insanely stubborn…or simply lying to me because the onions happened to be cheaper. Given I had other customers in line and, in retail, they practically pound “the customer is always right” into your head, I had to acquiesce and put them through as Vidalia onions, otherwise who knew what kind of scene she would have made -_-

Anyway…my point is, maybe the husband in the “not an elephant” case was operating under a similar “oh fuck it, I’ll just let her think she’s right to keep the peace” thought process.

Save Music Store from Trump Haters

Because of our support for Donald Trump, the small business my husband and I own is being targeted, threatened and smeared by a coordinated effort of anti Trump activists. In order to survive we need to relocate, and we are raising funds to get out of Chicago before everything we have worked for is destroyed. We are using this 3-4 month gofundme campaign as one of several ways we are employing to raise and record money earned towards our move, and as a way to chronical the tragic tale of political hate that is destroying our livelihood and share it with others.

Remember, Trump built his life on working marks.

We should expect some of the marks to realize that value of working other marks.

Those who do, however, have that epiphany that they no longer have to be the bottom layer in the pyramid scheme.

Holy crap. Swap out a few words here and there, and this article might as well be about trump’s America:

European leaders may recoil at the Turkish president’s outbursts this week - labelling the Dutch and German governments “Nazis” and “fascists” - but here, in his conservative, religious heartland, Recep Tayyip Erdogan can do no wrong.

What of his inflammatory rhetoric against Europe, I asked?

“I condemn Holland and Germany too,” she replied. “They don’t have a conscience.”

Standing beside her, pensioner Esma Koc chimed in: “Whatever he says is right - on every subject. If he appears to make a mistake, he must know something we don’t. What would we have done if he hadn’t existed?”

President Erdogan has repeatedly won at the ballot box and could once again in four weeks.

But the country he’s leading - a crucial Nato member and EU candidate - is dangerously polarised and, after this week, sliding ever further from Europe.

It does seem, when looking at the past, that themes aren’t limited to political boundaries.

The rise of Trump, Erdogan, Duterte, along with the old-timers like Abe and Putin… it all goes round and round.

We humans are very much into copying each other, and right now nationalism, especially tinctured with religion, appears to be “in” as far as political fashion.

I suppose some may counter with “What about Canada”, or even point out the recent Netherlands vote. But that Wilder came as close as he did when only 20 years ago his party/platform would have been so fringe as to not count, ought to be telling.

Frying potatoes (or, any food with lots of free asparagine, maybe) produces a nominal amount of acrylamide which is quite toxic to a number of different systems.

It was quite the brouhaha a few years ago; it is still floating around the food risk assessor as a possible potential maybe something we should kinda think about. There are companies looking into producing low asparagune potatoes as a possible mitigation. But, toxic, no. As Paracelsus notes, the dose makes the poison (paraphrase) and the amount of arcrylamode in French fries is not that dose to be concerned about.

I suspect some of the Republicans in Congress are getting more than a little frustrated with the ineptitude in the Trump administration.

The more broken the administration, the great likelihood that any Senator’s own agenda will get derailed from the side splash.

Why the Homeland Sec is invoked is another question.
