Maybe this world is just a computer simulation run in a parallel universe exploring how the population reacts when the citizens of the most powerful nation on earth decide to elect a misogynistic racist sociopath who knows nothing about foreign or domestic policy or history or the Constitution and has his administration dismantle a government that took generations to create. After all, isn’t what has happened too ridiculous for reality?
Headline writers…
President Trump’s approval rating sinks lower than Obama’s
Um… Trump’s so-called approval ratings started off lower than Obama’s.
It’s such a silly metric anyway, created soley to generate headlines.
The other day I commented on the Arkansas university that is changing the name of their physics department to physics and engineering… and all that goes with that.
Anyway, a wider view of this phenomenon:
Concerns raised over HKU’s ditching of maths-physics and astronomy degrees
The scrapping of two unpopular science courses have sparked concerns from scientists, who argued such move would neglect its social responsibility.
The science faculty said it could no longer afford to offer two major subjects - astronomy and a joint degree in mathematics and physics - starting next year as too few students were choosing them. Less than six students had graduated in either course in the past five years.
[…]
Perhaps no one can see the night sky in HK? I’ve visited there once, and it did seem quite bright at night.
The leader of the Party of Personal Responsibility, folks. Trump’s complete unwillingness to own his words is amazing.
HKU’s dean of science, Matthew Evans, explained that “students have simply voted with their feet”.“We have an obligation to use the funds provided to us efficiently, and teaching niche programmes is I am afraid too inefficient and results in a waste of academic time that is better spent in increasing the quality of education for larger numbers of students,” Evans said.
This gets to my concern over the meme of “STEM”.
Viewing knowledge only through the lens of economic utility is the end of science, as science.
Astronomy is now “waste”.
Hm. Iron Fist, up to ep 7:
The good:
- I’m liking the Meachams as characters, and not finding their part of the story to be a distraction, like some reviewers are.
- Madame Gao may specifically function as a shadowy figure, but when she appears she’s killing it. Also, a-plus trolling the hero.
- Finn Jones is doing a good job with the naive part of Danny Rand, and to a degree with the “messed up by being raised to fight.”
The -meh-:
- There’s a sort of Japanese-Chinese cultural stew thing that gets distracting. Tropes from tong movies, tropes from wushu movies, tropes from yakuza movies, yadda, yadda. It’s not really homage, just a kind-of “this is a thing that happens often” reference buffet. My opinion—they should have picked a Chinese flavor and stuck with it.
- The martial arts are…well, stuff like a kung fu master lording it over karate students doesn’t seem badass, just clueless. Okay, I’m lying…the fights are weirdly slow and often shot/blocked in ways that make them not very exciting. This is another place where picking a style—wushu hand pushing or more “realistic” violence—would have been a plus.
- The dialog frequently needs to be sawed in half. Danny Rand in particular is done a disservice by the expository dialogue. His’s acclimatization to K’un Lun culture just doesn’t feel lived-in, because it’s all couched in explanations and framing language that feels clunky.
I’d give it a C+ so far, and I’m still watching

I’ve been trying to track down a Yemeni student of mine off and on for a few years now. She said she feared reprisals against her family for letting her study abroad and for the family’s political views. I hadn’t heard from her in a long time, and was concerned she’d gotten caught up somehow in the troubles in Yemen.
Nope. Googling today I found she’s a life insurance agent in Kentucky, married now with kids. Now I have an address to send a postcard to.

That’s what I figured.
Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Took a few days to go traveling and recharge the batteries. It was good to get away for a few days, but everywhere I went, I saw the wages of Trump.
Newport RI mansions - how the truly rich lives (lived) - whether they were coal barons, railroad tycoons, or heirs to mining fortunes. The Gilded Age was so-named by Mark Twain for good reason. I fear that we’re revisiting the same kind of period, with the rich getting richer on the backs of everyone else.
New Bedford Whaling National Historic Site - where I learned that it was not only a major whaling center, but a major stop on the Underground Railroad and where Frederick Douglas lived for a time. Of course, Trump wants to keep coal and fossil fuels going even as technology passes them by and finds better, cheaper, and less polluting alternatives (wind, solar, geothermal).
Touro Synagogue, which is prominent not only for having the oldest standing synagogue in the nation, but the correspondence with George Washington enshrined the separation of church and state and reaffirmed that the nation was founded on a principle of religious freedom and tolerance. Here too, Trump rears his ugly mug, as he’s singling out minorities and pushing Muslim bans and going after illegal immigrants with walls and deportations.
re: #35 teleskiguy
My son saw them in Atlanta on Saturday. He’ll totally dig this.
I am still never quite less than amazed that the kid who was struggling with autism and sensory issues when he was young (to the point of complete overload and meltdown) is a hard core metalhead now. And he drives himself to the shows and back safely. In his own car. I honestly credit this music (and the bands, I think my son has pictures with almost every band he’s seen on local circuits and all his CDs signed) for helping him deal with his anxiety and other difficult emotions. And he’s made friends, tons of them. No one super close, but everyone seems to love him, pretty much (there’s always some asshole…thankfully not many). The music has helped motivate him socially and provided incentives to overcome the fear of driving and other formally panic inducing things. It started with Iron Maiden when he was maybe 12 or 13 and kept on going. So, while bands with names like Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation and Aborted kind of make one pause, I look at the actual people and how cool they are. And how much they have helped my kid, without even knowing it.
I doubt Il Trumpino reads The Guardian, but if he did, he’d be tweeting about the Guardian losing money because no one reads it.
In Donald Trump’s fantasy world, hints of reality are dawning
Matthew d’Ancona
I do not want to overstate the extent of Trump’s recent encounters with the irreducible facts. He still resides mostly in the Mar-a-Lago of his mind, a lurid cognitive space where he perceives the world as he wants it to be, rather than as it is. On Friday a German journalist asked him why he’s so scared of diversity in the media that he speaks so often about fake news, and things such as wiretapping, which “in the end, cannot be proven”. Trump’s response was to scorn her as “a nice, friendly reporter” and evade the question entirely by boasting of the US’s growing strength.
My claim is only that a few - just a few - chinks of light are breaking through the carapace of populist delusion. To change the metaphor: the waves of Trump’s sociopathic belief that he can say and do what he likes with impunity are starting to hit the rocks of reality. There is nothing to celebrate yet, no cause to relax, no outcome assured. Let us just say that this may, conceivably, be the end of the beginning.
D’Ancona may be right. Trump’s most recent tweets and interviews have been off the hinges, and I am sure he’s pitching fits privately about his inability to get DC to drop to its knees and do his bidding, no questions asked.

It’s not breaking news there.
As everyone with functioning neurons knows, once you realize that every frickin’ person in the Trump inner circle has links to Russia, Putin, or oligarchs (or all of the above), and several have already lied (or lied under oath - hiya perjurious Sessions!), all the claims that Trump doesn’t have ties to Russia sounds hollow.
All the claims that Trump and his cabal of cronies are not connected to Russia rings hollow when they’re repeatedly caught in the lie. We know that the Russians engaged in agitprop to manipulate the outcome of the election. We know that Comey’s letter played a significant role, as did the DNC leaks that were done by Russian hackers.
We know that Stone had repeated contacts with Guccifer.
We know that there’s even more that we don’t yet know because the intel is still classified, but members of Congress have been briefed on this, including that British dossier that contains the salacious pissing episode, but which likely also alludes to Trump being compromised by the Russians.
We further know that Trump’s foreign policies so far have helped no one but Russia. Undermining US strategic alliances with European partners, Middle East partners, and Asian partners does nothing to improve US standing in the world and helps our enemies, rivals, and Russia in particular.
Why would the US undermine those alliances and partnerships? That makes no sense unless the Trump admin is not pursuing a strategy that helps the US in short/long term, but one that inures benefit to our rivals. That’s the opposite of MAGA.
These are the kinds of activities that put people in prison at Fort Leavenworth for a very long time.

The most well-known fact about former journalist Terry Anderson is that he was held hostage by Shiite Hezbollah militants in Lebanon for almost seven years, from 1985 to 1991.He’s resigned to the cause for his fame. But for Anderson—also a former Marine, more recently a journalism professor, and now trying out the role of retired Orange County resident—life has gone on.
“I don’t think it affected very much that I really believe, in my worldview,” Anderson said of his captivity during a talk at the Lake of the Woods Democratic Club Sunday afternoon. “How does that affect my life today? I don’t know. … It’s part of my life, it’s there. It’s not going to go away. I don’t think about it very much, but it’s part of who I am.”
Anderson, who retired from the Associated Press—and journalism in general in the 1990s—joined the Democratic Party in Orange about a month ago, after spending a little over a year fixing up a house in the western part of the county. After decades spent more or less in the public eye, Anderson chose Orange because he has friends in the area, and it seemed like a quiet, pretty place to retire, he said.

re: #230 Belafon
Spoil’d due to block of text:
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act
Section 702 refers to part of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Amendments of 2008, Section 702 (50 USC 1881a). This provision of FISA faciliates the acquisition of foreign intelligence information concerning non-U.S. persons located outside the United States, creating a new, more streamlined procedure to collect the communications of foreign terrorists.
Limited Targeting Under the Law
The Government cannot target anyone under the court-approved procedures for Section 702 collection unless there is an appropriate, and documented, foreign intelligence purpose for the acquisition and the foreign target is reasonably believed to be outside the United States. Section 702 cannot be used to intentionally target any U.S. citizen, or any other U.S. person, or to intentionally target any person known to be in the United States. Section 702 cannot be used to target a person outside the United States if the purpose is to acquire information from a from a person inside the United States.
How Data is Obtained and Used
Section 702 involves the assistance of electronic communications service providers, a dynamic that is explicitly laid out in the statute itself. However, under Section 702 of FISA, the United States Government does not unilaterally obtain information from the servers of U.S. electronic communication service providers. All such information is obtained with FISA court approval and with the knowledge of the service provider based upon a written directive from the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence.
Oversight, Compliance and Minimization
Collection under Section 702 does not require individual judicial orders authorizing collection against each target. Instead, the FISA court approves annual certifications submitted by the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence that identify categories of foreign intelligence that may be collected, subject to Court-approved “targeting” procedures and “minimization” procedures.
Activities authorized by Section 702 are subject to oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the Executive Branch, and Congress. They involve extensive procedures, specifically approved by the court, to ensure that only non-U.S. persons outside the U.S. are targeted, and that minimize the acquisition, retention and dissemination of incidentally acquired information about U.S. persons.
Status of the Law
Section 702 was recently reauthorized by Congress after extensive hearings and debate.

And if Robert Downey Jr has tried to teach us anything, well, we know what that is.
re: #245 FormerDirtDart
There’s so many Trump people under investigations for so much different stuff, that any testimony has to be careful not to jeopardize any of those investigations.
Manafort, Stone, and all the rest are in trouble, right up to Trump himself. You don’t get to publicly state that you had contacts with Guccifer and Russian hackers - coordinating activities - as Stone did, without there being repercussions.
Stone’s tweets are going to help any investigation to that end.
Manafort may not be the tweeter that Stone is, but he’s got just as many problems.
Up and down the line, Trump’s surrounded himself with people who are up to their eyeballs in Russia contacts - his own family included (which is why those goddamned full tax returns are crucial to figuring out whether Trump’s compromised by Russia).

Wait until… not now but at some point in the near future, I’d bet… they get into the money laundering. As Reuters’ recent report showed, many Russian oligarchs have bought Trump properties in Florida for largely inflated amounts. Trump’s US operations are not that successful. Where does get his billions? Russian money-laundering. He’s like a character from the tv show THE BLACK LIST.
re: #303 Backwoods_Sleuth
Flynn was under investigation for good damned reason. He was a loose cannon all along and he was an undeclared foreign agent taking money from Turkey (and who knows who else), lying about his contacts, etc.
Flynn is the tip of the iceberg, as the rest of the Trump inner circle is up to no good as well.
That Trump thinks that any of this exonerates him is laughable, and shows that he still doesn’t get how any of this works.
Nothing that came out today helps him.
Nothing.
The focus on what the members of Congress said is not nearly as important as what those testifying said (or didn’t say).
Comey clearly states Obama didn’t order wire taps.
He also clearly stated that investigations into Trump campaign began in July 2016. Trump invited those frickin’ investigations through his own words/actions - daring Russia to interfere in US elections and attack political rival to gain advantages.
That Trump surrounded himself with people who were linked to Russia wasn’t an outlier either. That was purposeful. Flynn, Page, Manafort, Stone and Trump himself all have contacts and questionable actions/statements about what they’d done.
Stone in particular is in trouble IMO for what he tweeted over the past week. The FBI knows this too. Same with Manafort. None in the Trump admin have clean hands, especially Trump since he picked these extremists to advise and guide him.
re: #307 Henny Penny

A well-funded national campaign to rewrite the U.S. Constitution to the benefit of wealthy special interests has found its way into the Wisconsin legislature. Over the last few weeks, Wisconsin Republicans have jumped on the bandwagon to push for a dangerous new constitutional convention. The proposal (Senate Joint Resolution 18 introduced last Thursday) would add Wisconsin to an alarming and growing number of states calling for a constitutional convention to impose a federal balanced budget amendment. But a constitutional convention, if unleashed, is unlikely to call it quits after a single amendment when there is nothing stopping it from making an unlimited number of changes to our nation’s founding document.
Under Article V of the U.S. Constitution, two-third of state legislatures (34) can pass applications to call a constitutional convention to propose amendments. Throughout the Constitution’s 226-year history, this process has never been used. Yet, 28 states have now called for an Article V convention to add a balanced budget amendment. That means Article V advocates are just six states away from reaching their goal.
The secretive big money groups behind the call for an Article V convention are counting on Wisconsin to help them reach their goal. Several of these organizations have close financial ties to the billionaire mega-donor Koch brothers. Gov. Scott Walker is also known for his close relationship with the Kochs’ donor network, which is why it’s not surprising that Walker endorsed the idea of call an Article V convention a few months ago. The bill’s chief sponsor, Sen. Chris Kapenga, is a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a secretive corporate lobbying group funded by the Koch brothers that has been pushing Article V legislation across the country.

The Trumpheads won’t like this by NBC news one bit.
Remember when DT waxed rapturously at his rallies about how great the Wikileaks leaks were?
Good times.

He was never that mighty in the first place, but Jeez, how Greenwald has fallen.
IIJM, or is Glenn dismissing “imaginary Kremlin plots” pretty much a sure indication that said plots are quite real?

re: #387 Jay C
It’s Greenwald. Who cares what he says at this point (or any point).
The guy has repeatedly shown that he’s not interested in anything other than furthering his career even if it means backing the likes of Wikileaks and Snowden.
He’s got a vested interest in trying to cast doubt on the US intel community finding Wikileaks and their connections to Russia. If it turns out Wikileaks is a mouthpiece for Russia, that means that Greenwald by extension is one as well.
As we learn more about Wikileaks, it’s clear that the entity is pushing Putin’s agenda, with just a veneer of plausible deniability, but even that is wearing thin.
