Wow. OT, but I saw this comment as a response to an article a friend linked:

The only one I am guilty of is wearing athletic shoes to work. Because I don’t work in a fucking office like a woman. I work outside, where I am on my feet being a man all day.

What the fuck. So because I sit at a desk all day and manage teams of programmers that write the shit your business runs on (and make no mistake, whether you personally use a computer or not, your business absolutely runs on them), I’m a woman now? No. Fuck you. My job is no less difficult than yours just because I use my mental strength and you use your physical strength.

Yeah, they voted because they knew it had precisely ZERO chance of success.

They never put together anything coherent as a replacement, despite them spending years claiming they had a better way.

Vatican created Islam in the 6th century, and controls it today. The Wahhabi society is in complete relationship with the Black Popes. That is why they want to import Catholic Hispanics and Sharia Muslims as an invasion force in the last Christians country on earth, The United States.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of how Kansas has been such a basket case under Laffer-curve worshiper Gov. Sam Brownback. Now let’s visit my former home state and several Lizard’s current domicile, Minnesota….

Chicago Tribune: Most liberal governor’ rights ship in Minnesota

So far, the test in Kansas of conservative economic principles has largely been a failure. As we read in the Tribune’s Perspective section Tuesday, large tax cuts and other austerity measures in recent years intended to spur growth have instead resulted in swollen deficits, credit downgrades and public schools having to close early because they’re out of money.

In contrast, the test in Minnesota of liberal economic principles has largely been a success. As we will read today, tax and spending increases in recent years have resulted in a budget surplus and a robust economic climate that’s the envy of the state’s Midwestern neighbors.

In 2010, former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party was elected to succeed Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who left a $6.2 billion two-year budget deficit. Dayton’s plan was to tax the rich, but he was unable to impose that agenda until his party won solid majorities in both state legislative houses in the 2012 elections.

To a chorus of hand-wringing predictions that wealthy business owners would flee the state and unemployment would skyrocket, Dayton, himself a super-rich heir to the Target retail fortune, pushed through more than $2 billion in new taxes, more than half of them targeting the top 1 percent of earners. They included a 25 percent hike in the state income tax rate — to 9.85 percent — on annual income of over $250,000 per couple (by comparison, Illinois’ state income tax rate is a flat 3.75 percent).

Here are a few numbers from the April U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee’s state-by-state economic snapshots

Unemployment rate: Kansas, 4.2 percent; Wisconsin, 4.6 percent; Minnesota, 3.7 percent; Illinois, 6.0 percent; national rate, 5.5 percent.
Average weekly private-sector earnings: Kansas, $784 (+2.3 percent over the past year); Wisconsin, $795 (+0.1 percent); Minnesota, $891 (+1.5 percent); Illinois, $893 (+1.6 percent); national average growth, 2.3 percent.

Annual GDP growth: Kansas, 1.9 percent; Wisconsin, 1.7 percent; Minnesota, 2.8 percent; Illinois, 0.9 percent; national average, 1.8 percent.

In the past year, Minnesota has added 47,000 private-sector jobs, leading Kansas, Wisconsin and Illinois in per capita growth in that metric.

Further, in the most recent Forbes ranking of the best states for business Minnesota was ninth, Kanas 25th, Wisconsin 32nd and Illinois 40th.

ANyone who takes Arthur Laffer seriously should be mocked mercilessly.

Unfortunately we’ve got an R house and senate now, and they’re up to the usual crap that R’s do. Dayton can’t force them to deliver decent bills for him to sign; he can only veto the rotten ones. The budget they’re putting together is pummeling the state agency that I work for.

Entered as a breaking news item in my regional newspaper just now:

No Repeal for Obamacare - A Humiliating Defeat for Trump
(More at the Scottsbluff NE Star-Herald)

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a humiliating failure, President Donald Trump and GOP leaders yanked their bill to repeal “Obamacare” off the House floor Friday when it became clear it would fail badly — after seven years of nonstop railing against the health care law.

Democrats said Americans can “breathe a sigh of relief.” Trump said Obama’s law was imploding “and soon will explode.”

Thwarted by two factions of fellow Republicans, from the center and far right, House Speaker Paul Ryan said President Barack Obama’s health care law, the GOP’s No. 1 target in the new Trump administration, will remain in place “for the foreseeable future.”

It was a stunning defeat for the new president after he had demanded House Republicans delay no longer and vote on the legislation Friday, pass or fail.

Anyone who takes Arthur Laffer seriously should be mocked mercilessly.

Andrew Laffer is an economic pre-suppositionalist (something like Biblical pre-suppositionalists, but with money).

Laffer starts with the pre-suppostion that lowering tax rates increases tax revenue (through increased economic activity that would overcome the reduced tax rate).

He presupposes that:
a) Such a relationship would only have one peak (he represents it as a parabola), whereas there could be multiple peaks of taxation versus revenue
b) We must be on the “taxed too much side” of his parabola

In other words, he is propagating a religion.

Economics is an incredibly complex subject. Reducing tax revenue to a single simple curve is ignoring almost all of the causal factors.

Since ACA/Obamacare is on everyone’s mind right now this would have been a perfect time for the Democrats to have a “ACA Improvement Act” ready to roll out. The “Improvements” could range from having National or Regional Health exchanges to improve the enrollment pools, standardized National benefit requirements, and mandatory requirements for the States to join the Medicaid assistance program. Hell, why not throw in a single payer program while we’re talking about the issue?

You need to stop! You have me cracking up down here in GA. Nunes is hiding out and hoping no one comes looking for him. He was riding high on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the walk-back began and ended today with him refuting everything he said earlier this week. He was part of Trump’s transition team, so I’m wondering if his phone has info the FBI and NSA might be interested in taking a look at.

Did he really? As best I can recall through the whole Obamacare-repeal circus, Trump’s major contribution(s) to the debate were to make his trademark windy speeches, rely on Paul Ryan and his Congressional monkey-pit to cobble up some sort of “replacement” bill which would get passed quickly by the GOP in. Congress, leaving Democrats pushed aside, and proving Hair Furor with a glorious “victory” to crow endlessly about. AFAICT, his personal input seemed to be limited to summoning meetings with GOP Reps to play tough-guy Boss with them. While no doubt, frantically ginning up an excuse strategy for if/when the whole shitshow blew up.

Just remember she’s only sitting in that seat because her daddy let her. That’s not the case for the overwhelming majority of working women in America and we shouldn’t celebrate anyone for whom that is.

You should have. Straight out of the gate, he began with the BS that neither party has passed healthcare reform, something he knows is a lie. I think the reason he started with this lie is because the GOP showed the world today that it’s one yuuuuge fail in Congress. The deal-maker couldn’t deliver. It’s no one’s fault but theirs that with a majority in the House, they couldn’t pass the GOP hc bill. Trump is in denial and so is Fournier and some others. They’re having a hard time accepting the fact that Ryan’s bill was rejected by a majority of Americans, so they say things to make themselves feel better. MMFA had a video clip of a female who said on CNN earlier today that her junk insurance was better than Obamacare. Rubio created a type of catastrophic health insurance plan when he was in the FL legislature. Iirc, fewer than 500 people had purchased it in the first year of the plan’s rollout. When Obamacare became an option, millions of Floridians signed up. Fournier is, and has always been, a lying, selfish butt-hole.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Reps. Diana DeGette, Louise Slaughter, Jan Schakowsky, Barbara Lee, Judy Chu, Suzan DelBene, Jerrold Nadler and Katherine Clark today blasted Republicans’ latest changes to their disastrous healthcare repeal bill, which threatens the health and well-being of women and families. Under the latest version of the Republican bill, states would be allowed to kick new mothers off Medicaid if they can’t find work within 60 days of giving birth.

“Just when we thought this bill couldn’t get any worse for women and families, Republicans have found a new low. Their updated bill, released in the middle of the night, now includes a direct attack on new mothers right after childbirth,” the members of Congress said. “Their devastating bill would turn back the clock on women across our country by violating family leave protections for new mothers. American families deserve better.”

The Republicans’ latest addition of Medicaid work requirements would allow states to force new mothers to find work within 60 days of giving birth or risk losing their Medicaid health coverage. This timeframe is even shorter than existing federal protections for recent mothers.

- it must have a kickass public transport system, because no one in the show seems to own a car, yet they have no trouble getting around town
- wages must be also kickass, because Barry Allen, police CSI, bought a freakin’ 2500 square foot loft for his girlfriend and he to live in. It’s fully furnished, too, looking like something out of some home design magazine.
- conversely, Barry’s salary might be no great shakes, but home and furnishing prices there are super cheap!

BTW the musical episode was corny, but the singing and dancing was pretty good!

When I was in the Navy, I used to run an Advanced D&D campaign. Several of the players took to taking twenty-sided (saving throw) dice with them to chow, and would roll them when selecting what to add to their trays.

BIG caveat to this suit. You must keep it as dry as possible. The moment it get’s wet, it’s miserable. Heavy, cold, and cumbersome. Funny. This suit, which is seen at nearly every big spring break suárez in the mountains is better suited during the colder months. I wore the suit in the middle of February on a powder day, I had boxer shorts on underneath, I was *warm* that day. Because the fucker didn’t get wet from all that dry snow!

“A TRANSGENDER MAN IS GOING TO ASSAULT MY CHILDREN IN PUBLIC BATHROOMS!”

Some people will lie about anything. Transgender persons don’t want their d@mn children. I’m hetero, and I don’t want their d@mn kids, wouldn’t hurt them for the world, inside or outside of a bathroom setting. I think what these lies show is the concealed depravity in regard to children that resides in their own minds. They remind me of the Oklahoma lawmaker who resigned earlier this week. The guy swore all up and down that he was a Christian, homophobic, Islamophobic, undocumented immigrant-hating, granny starving, voter fraud-hunting, child-protecting SOB, but it turned out that he was none of these. Dude got caught in a motel with an underage kid. He is the kind of person I’m talking about—-they seem preoccupied with certain issues, rant and rage against them, and then we find out they’re doing exactly what they said they were against. When they’re exposed, I waste no time feeling sorry for them because they didn’t have to hate on others and use legislation against them. These lying hypocrites decided at the outset to do whatever they could to gain political power and draw attention to themselves. Frick these types of suckers with a rusty nail.

it was about ryan not knowing how to do his job and thinking he could submit his christmas list as a bill and people would just vote for it; it was about how ryan is so weak that 29 members of the “freedom” caucus can lead him around by the nose; it was about what happens when the president is a blind, insane child

this is just a foretaste of what government will look like for the next year and a half. they arent gonna learn on the job - more likely a crisis or two will blindside them and theyll freeze like a deer in the headlights

Seth Abramson is an epic level bullshit artist. Nothing he publishes should ever be taken at face value.

Metamodernists do not deconstruct; they encounter deconstructed landscapes and atop them aim to reconstruct the many overlapping possibilities those landscapes now obscure. Metamodernism is not cynical, or ironic, and it certainly has no interest whatsoever in deceit; it earnestly seeks to expand our sense of the possible by noting that multiple master narratives or metanarratives can co-exist in the same space. (Note that this is significantly more radical than saying many narratives can co-exist at once; that’s something all of us instinctively and from hard experience already know to be true.) While this might tend to destabilize corporate master narratives, and while it might also tend to unsettle individuals’ guiding metanarratives, the aim of metamodern literature is not to expose how things can be unsettled or fractured but rather the opposite: how fiction and truth, creativity and analysis, optimism and cynicism, sincerity and irony, deconstruction and reconstruction — Art and Life — can be said to be and thereby can be seen as eternally juxtaposed and ineluctable. In other words, open up the possible and you find the impossible inside; raise up the impossible to the level of the possible and eventually it becomes as possible as everything else and sometimes even more so.

That’s one of those tough decisions everyone has to make - apparently when faced with a decision he chose wrong (at least as far as this Democrat is concerned).

I have a tough decision, though of a different sort: Our village clerk informed me yesterday afternoon when I went to help her in the office and pick up something for my political junket to water operator school (behind the privacy bar)

h08RRqDHTEo9kgqX0vm3Mak+UlDcITWLQkkGdIbp/F8QpeQhTKTVOCS/5XwLCgCn2v4sYEneGND2cAJEGGQaCgVxuFBasvGo6Qp7CGt3eAUCizfFUHdBn9N1YGNNdAGCX3FCc1J7bQE45Qed1Bbj2gMkw8sbEOsx7wkjIpxQOMdZj571SuCJHoJbucrcntdWsgG0RN5xGgDt0YwRFdlZfkFCwNjEygyPwTFZvSM7ZFjj2SXil/aeIrGZWKAz0mEM5S6BouCUbNPTQPQITmOGiQ2yPKBs8WmlWd2Sbp2hVXm/LnvIvEGaKBl3zSuNlh4kv8acIuGJ8r39Nw/qL1dRhmRrcX15qTvAk9xoajke9+Y2jqXz+5CL6w==

The state is about to audit our village’s tax receipts versus expenditures. The clerk notes that every time this has come up, the village comes up short (the state requires a certain amount of tax income for municipalities versus expenditures). Each time in the past, the village board has kicked the can down the road (because telling people in town the board needs to raise taxes a smidgen is too hard to swallow).

I am putting on the agenda for the next board meeting a tax ordinance to meet the state requirements before the state forces the issue with us. (I am guessing that will go over like a lead balloon, tax-and-spend liberals, yadayada.) If I can actually sell this in my uber-conservative village (if for no other reason than it keeps the state off our backs), maybe I can do this politicking thing.

This man now stands before you, seeking your endorsement to the King. How do you respond?

GOP-PC: I cast a silence spell on her, saying the magic words “Nevertheless, she persisted.”

DM: She failed her saving throw. She cannot speak further.

GOP-PC: We send a courier to the King saying we approve of his choice for Chief Magistrate.

That goes for Page, Manafort, and Stone testifying as well.

Democrats in Congress also need to repeatedly hammer home that these guys are selling out our country to a foreign power for their own gain.

If somehow someone can show actual espionage, the Dems need to get it out there. While I am not a fan of the death penalty, espionage is punishable by death. Put that fear in the conservatives if necessary: The GOP is the “pro-life” party all about the death penalty.

Since they only care about things when they affect them personally, perhaps the fear of a firing squad might do it.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance.

The GOP butthurt continues as Ryan had all these years to come up with a solid health care package replacement, and all he managed was a piece of crap that couldn’t even get the approval of his caucus.

Trump had no clue, and it’s clear he didn’t read the bill or the amendments as it went on. Trump’s vaunted negotiating prowess turned out to be empty threats. He demanded a vote so he could come up with an enemies list.

And he’s spinning like a top. Blaming others. Blaming Democrats. Blaming everyone but his own idiocy. And denying that he had any promises to repeal and replace Obamacare with something much much much better.

The negotiator in chief/art of the deal turned out to be a lie.

He sold Republicans on the idea he could repeal and replace Obamacare.

Democrats knew better. More voters knew better.

The DnD version of this?

DM: You come across a library. On the desk is a scroll that provides health point protection for your campaign, but it will reduce your gold cache by 5%.
GOP: I don’t take the scroll.
Dems: I read the scroll
GOP: But I’m going to go in a death spiral, don’t do it.
DM: Your campaign is protected; your cache of gold has been reduced by 3%
GOP: Gods damnit Dems. We go searching for a better spell.
DM: *rolls*
DM: GOP finds a scroll that inflicts 5 points of damage on the campaigners and reduces gold by 8%.
GOP: I read the scroll incantation.
DM: Wait. What?! You really want to inflict damage on yourself and lose more gold than the spell the Dems charmed the campaign with?
GOP: ????
GOP: My caucus huddles (do we keep looking? this other scroll is awful. I love my gold and want more; and with that gold I can make more potions for myself)
GOP: We keep looking.
DM: You find another scroll. It inflicts 6 points of damage on the campaigners and reduces gold by 8%
GOP: We read the spell.
DM: You attempt to read the spell, but it backfires. Your hair is set on fire, but no change - the Dem spell protected you.

The National Enquirer brands Michael Flynn as a Russian spy.

Jordan Aravosis speculates with Team Trump seemingly throwing Flynn under the bus, and that Carter Page, Paul Manafort, and Roger Stone all want to testify publicly (but Flynn has not indicated he wants to testify at all), that Michael Flynn may have turned state’s evidence.

That would be a bombshell if true.

The Enquirer is not known for spreading malicious facts. However, its owner is very close to Donald Trump. Speculating myself, it seems unlikely the Enquirer would slam-dunk Gen. Flynn if Mr. Trump was still close to him.

So is Team Trump simply cutting their losses with Flynn, or does the Enquirer actually have something here? Enquiring Minds Want to Know. (sm)

In business, you negotiate because there’s something both sides have to gain. Sometimes those deals do fall through and it’s better to walk away, but as you say, politics is a different beast since these parties all have to continue working together and interacting.

Negotiating in politics is the same - everyone wants to gain something, and you need to understand what the sides want. Trump never bothered to figure out what that was. Neither did Ryan for that matter.

And it’s good that they didn’t.

Ryan might learn from this. Trump certainly wont.

Ryan needs to learn as Boehner did, that there is no negotiating with political terrorists aka the Freedom Caucus.

But that’d involve ignoring the “Hastert rule” which is total BS, but it would free up the House to take reasonable measures under consideration.

Ryan wouldn’t do it because it’d mean a revolt from these same extremists.

He’s in a no win situation, and he has no solution.

Of course, next up on the agenda is debt ceiling and taking up a budget. Tax reform too.

There’s also the whole Trump agenda, which includes infrastructure.

None of this bodes well for Ryan and the GOP. They can’t assume Democrats to bail them out on any of this other than the debt ceiling and voting on a continuing budget (preserving the budget from last year).

Donald Trump’s Meeting at the Mayflower: The Attendees

At the Mayflower meeting, Donald Trump had the following people:

Jared Kushner, his son in law (who for whatever reason now runs much of the US foreign policy)
Jeff Sessions, a longtime Trump ally who is now Attorney General
Corey Lewandkowski, Trump’s former campaign manager
Paul Manafort
Bud McFralane [sic], a pro-Russia advocate who was known for sketchy dealings in the past, and now wants to get Russian oil access
The Ambassador of the Philippines
The Ambassador of Singapore
The Ambassador of Italy
The Ambassador of Russia
, who is also allegedly a Russian spy
The last three men …were the same men who were involved in negotiating a GIANT Russian oil deal.

There isn’t one where insurance companies are just going to decide on their own that paying for maternity care is worth it. But there are countries that have universal, government regulated health care that use private insurance companies, for instance, Switzerland: en.wikipedia.org.

I would like to confirm with these anti-ACA people whether they have company provided health care benefits. If they do receive company provided health care then they are already using a government supported program.

It is 100% tax deductible to the business

re: #386 lawhawk

Somewhere I read that the GOP FAILED when they started the whole “Repeal and Replace” mantra. It was an admission that they could not simply repeal the ACA alone.

390
ozharas  Mar 25, 2017 • 6:57:37am

The loss of insurance so soon after a birth was what shocked me.

When I had my child here in Australia, it was at one of the best maternity hospitals. I had excellent care, home visits, child & maternal health checkups at various stages in her first 5 years, my daughter had 2 ED visits for anaphylaxis, allergy tests and hospital trials, she had corrective eye surgery, all within 2 years of birth.

We have private health insurance, and used it sometimes, but the entire pre-natal, birth, post birth checkups, ED visits, were completely on our Medicare system.

Most women I know assume they can, and do take, 6-18 months maternity leave, and expect to be able to return to their employer in the same role or on a part time basis.

I don’t understand how access to insurance and therefore to medical care, is tied to employment. What has one got to do with the other?

391
lawhawk  Mar 25, 2017 • 6:58:57am

re: #389 Ming5000

The repeal/replace was an admission that the system in place before the ACA was unsustainable and needed improvement. The GOP extremists didn’t have a problem with this, and that’s why they thought a straight repeal should be sufficient. Let the market leave millions screwed - and millions more who gained coverage to lose it.

For Americans facing medically induced bankruptcies and crushing medical costs because they couldn’t get covered, this was a nonstarter.

That’s why the GOP needed to come up with something to replace Obamacare.

Ryan’s so called 3 basket plan was an attempt to get replacement in 3 steps - repeal Obamacare and the funding mechanisms through reconciliation, administratively destroy/gut Obamacare, and then put in place a replacement in step 3.

We’d never get to step 3 because the extremists would never go for it. Turns out they couldn’t get to step 1 either.

History. Health care coverage became something a business offered because unions were trying to negotiate for salaries to cover it. It was a way for companies to keep people, and weaken union’s power, and it has worked. We would be better off if businesses did not provide it and, instead, paid employees to buy their own insurance. But that kind of change is not something the middle class in this country will go for, even if it would be in their long term benefit.

Apparently before WWII people had to pay for health care on their own. Post WWII, due to the govt.’s appeasing resistance to govt. dictated wage freezes, the govt. gave tax breaks to companies to provide health care benefits.
We have never evolved beyond that. All the entitled anti-healthcare voices who already have healthcare through employment have stymied any efforts to make progress to an objectively better system.

That is how Britain got single-payer with its NHS: that was established during WW2 in anticipation of massive civilian casualties in the event of an invasion. It proved so popular that the post-war Tory government could not get rid of it.

Sputnik is applying to be a member in the White House Foreign Press Group, which would give it a chance to be a part of a group of about 22 foreign outlets covering Trump alongside pool reporters from U.S. news sources.

The White House Foreign Press Group head Philip Crowther told Politico that if Sputnik meets the required criteria, there “shouldn’t be any reason” for the Russian publication to not join the press pool.

The requirements would include a membership in the White House Correspondents’ Association, a verification by the State Department that Sputnik is based in Russia, and a White House-approved hard pass.

There isn’t one where insurance companies are just going to decide on their own that paying for maternity care is worth it. But there are countries that have universal, government regulated health care that use private insurance companies, for instance, Switzerland: en.wikipedia.org.

Precisely my point! RepubliKKKlans keep bullshitting about how an unregulated free market would provide health care for everyone. No country in the world has such a UNREGULATED free market system providing health care!

Yet you have hard core Republicans continually snorting that free market fairy dust supplied by the Invisible Hand Of The Free Market that gets them so high that they continually float up up up in the rarified air to their Laissez Fairyland® where their Ayn Randian fantasies take control of their withered consciences!

The US is now killing so many civilians in Syria that an independent monitoring group no longer has the resources to investigate the Russian killing of civilians in Syria.

“The decision to temporarily suspend our Russia strike assessments has been a very difficult one to take,” Woods said. “Moscow is still reportedly killing hundreds of civilians in Syria every month. But with Coalition casualty claims escalating so steeply - and with very limited Airwars resources - we believe our key focus at present needs to be on the U.S.-led alliance.”

re: #392 Belafon

Not exactly.

Health insurance became something an employment perk during WWII, because there were wage-freeze-for-the-duration regulations, and not enough skilled workers to meet demand. It was a way for aircraft factories, gun factories, jeep factories and parachute factories to try to poach each other’s workforce.

Since about mid-day yesterday, I have had a lot of trouble loading LGF on my iPad (Safari). It has been slow to load, and crashes/reloads a lot, eventually resulting in a “death notice” page. I can eventually reload, but it takes a while, and then has crashed a couple of times mid-comment.

My iPhone, too. I think there’s some comment with a weird tag or something. I’m in Spy and it’s fine. The comment had to be around 330 or so. I came back and it wouldn’t load. I went into Spy and limited it to the last 50 comments only and I was fine.

My iPhone can usually handle around 425 comments before it’s just too big. But this was really early in the thread for that to happen.

God is real busy theses days. She must not have realized there is a processing delay in those prayers and the days of instant effectiveness are over.

I think you get a notice though when they will be looked into by the staff of saints as to whether anything can be done and if they think you’re worthy, then you get moved up to the big guy for consideration. It’s tougher to get a prayer through. Lot’s of people clogging the system with bogus requests. Keep checking!

More commentary on the AHCA debacle, this from David Atkins in the Washington Monthly online:

” It was clear to anyone who listened that Trump had absolutely no background in healthcare policy or why the subject had bedeviled both parties for decades: as with his business empire, he simply assumed that if he snapped his fingers and told people to make it happen, it simply would. In Trump’s world, the only reason hard things don’t get done is because no one of sufficient power and Nietzschean will gets surly and angry enough to scare the little people into doing them. …”
