So far, the test in Kansas of conservative economic principles has largely been a failure. As we read in the Tribune’s Perspective section Tuesday, large tax cuts and other austerity measures in recent years intended to spur growth have instead resulted in swollen deficits, credit downgrades and public schools having to close early because they’re out of money.
In contrast, the test in Minnesota of liberal economic principles has largely been a success. As we will read today, tax and spending increases in recent years have resulted in a budget surplus and a robust economic climate that’s the envy of the state’s Midwestern neighbors.
In 2010, former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party was elected to succeed Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who left a $6.2 billion two-year budget deficit. Dayton’s plan was to tax the rich, but he was unable to impose that agenda until his party won solid majorities in both state legislative houses in the 2012 elections.
To a chorus of hand-wringing predictions that wealthy business owners would flee the state and unemployment would skyrocket, Dayton, himself a super-rich heir to the Target retail fortune, pushed through more than $2 billion in new taxes, more than half of them targeting the top 1 percent of earners. They included a 25 percent hike in the state income tax rate — to 9.85 percent — on annual income of over $250,000 per couple (by comparison, Illinois’ state income tax rate is a flat 3.75 percent).
Here are a few numbers from the April U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee’s state-by-state economic snapshots
Unemployment rate: Kansas, 4.2 percent; Wisconsin, 4.6 percent; Minnesota, 3.7 percent; Illinois, 6.0 percent; national rate, 5.5 percent.
Average weekly private-sector earnings: Kansas, $784 (+2.3 percent over the past year); Wisconsin, $795 (+0.1 percent); Minnesota, $891 (+1.5 percent); Illinois, $893 (+1.6 percent); national average growth, 2.3 percent.Annual GDP growth: Kansas, 1.9 percent; Wisconsin, 1.7 percent; Minnesota, 2.8 percent; Illinois, 0.9 percent; national average, 1.8 percent.
In the past year, Minnesota has added 47,000 private-sector jobs, leading Kansas, Wisconsin and Illinois in per capita growth in that metric.

I was physically sick when I saw the pic of Trump in Florida with his chin propped up by his hand while an international incident was happening. Dude was just sitting there with a stupid smile on his face while everything around him gave me the impression that everyone except him thought the situation was very serious.
Since ACA/Obamacare is on everyone’s mind right now this would have been a perfect time for the Democrats to have a “ACA Improvement Act” ready to roll out. The “Improvements” could range from having National or Regional Health exchanges to improve the enrollment pools, standardized National benefit requirements, and mandatory requirements for the States to join the Medicaid assistance program. Hell, why not throw in a single payer program while we’re talking about the issue?

When Obamacare became an option, millions of Floridians signed up. Fournier is, and has always been, a lying, selfish butt-hole.

The Republicans’ latest addition of Medicaid work requirements would allow states to force new mothers to find work within 60 days of giving birth or risk losing their Medicaid health coverage. This timeframe is even shorter than existing federal protections for recent mothers.
It occurs to me that in the current circumstances, that filibustering Gorsuch is a no-brainer.
Totally OT, but I’ve been catching up on TV series lately. I’ve decided I want to live in Central City on whatever Earth The Flash lives on, because:
- it must have a kickass public transport system, because no one in the show seems to own a car, yet they have no trouble getting around town
- wages must be also kickass, because Barry Allen, police CSI, bought a freakin’ 2500 square foot loft for his girlfriend and he to live in. It’s fully furnished, too, looking like something out of some home design magazine.
- conversely, Barry’s salary might be no great shakes, but home and furnishing prices there are super cheap!
BTW the musical episode was corny, but the singing and dancing was pretty good!

This is the best one-piece ever, the Spyder Bear Suit. I have a friend who has one, has let me use it a couple of times. All you need is underwear in most conditions, very warm.
BIG caveat to this suit. You must keep it as dry as possible. The moment it get’s wet, it’s miserable. Heavy, cold, and cumbersome. Funny. This suit, which is seen at nearly every big spring break suárez in the mountains is better suited during the colder months. The state is about to audit our village’s tax receipts versus expenditures. The clerk notes that every time this has come up, the village comes up short (the state requires a certain amount of tax income for municipalities versus expenditures). Each time in the past, the village board has kicked the can down the road (because telling people in town the board needs to raise taxes a smidgen is too hard to swallow).
I am putting on the agenda for the next board meeting a tax ordinance to meet the state requirements before the state forces the issue with us. In business, you negotiate because there’s something both sides have to gain. Sometimes those deals do fall through and it’s better to walk away, but as you say, politics is a different beast since these parties all have to continue working together and interacting.
Negotiating in politics is the same - everyone wants to gain something, and you need to understand what the sides want. Trump never bothered to figure out what that was. Neither did Ryan for that matter.
And it’s good that they didn’t.

But that’d involve ignoring the “Hastert rule” which is total BS, but it would free up the House to take reasonable measures under consideration.
Ryan wouldn’t do it because it’d mean a revolt from these same extremists.
He’s in a no win situation, and he has no solution.
Of course, next up on the agenda is debt ceiling and taking up a budget. Tax reform too.
There’s also the whole Trump agenda, which includes infrastructure.
None of this bodes well for Ryan and the GOP. They can’t assume Democrats to bail them out on any of this other than the debt ceiling and voting on a continuing budget (preserving the budget from last year).

Somewhere I read that the GOP FAILED when they started the whole “Repeal and Replace” mantra. It was an admission that they could not simply repeal the ACA alone.
The loss of insurance so soon after a birth was what shocked me.
When I had my child here in Australia, it was at one of the best maternity hospitals. I had excellent care, home visits, child & maternal health checkups at various stages in her first 5 years, my daughter had 2 ED visits for anaphylaxis, allergy tests and hospital trials, she had corrective eye surgery, all within 2 years of birth.
We have private health insurance, and used it sometimes, but the entire pre-natal, birth, post birth checkups, ED visits, were completely on our Medicare system.
Most women I know assume they can, and do take, 6-18 months maternity leave, and expect to be able to return to their employer in the same role or on a part time basis.
I don’t understand how access to insurance and therefore to medical care, is tied to employment. What has one got to do with the other?

The repeal/replace was an admission that the system in place before the ACA was unsustainable and needed improvement. The GOP extremists didn’t have a problem with this, and that’s why they thought a straight repeal should be sufficient. Let the market leave millions screwed - and millions more who gained coverage to lose it.
For Americans facing medically induced bankruptcies and crushing medical costs because they couldn’t get covered, this was a nonstarter.
That’s why the GOP needed to come up with something to replace Obamacare.
Ryan’s so called 3 basket plan was an attempt to get replacement in 3 steps - repeal Obamacare and the funding mechanisms through reconciliation, administratively destroy/gut Obamacare, and then put in place a replacement in step 3.
We’d never get to step 3 because the extremists would never go for it. Turns out they couldn’t get to step 1 either.

Apparently before WWII people had to pay for health care on their own. Post WWII, due to the govt.’s appeasing resistance to govt. dictated wage freezes, the govt. gave tax breaks to companies to provide health care benefits.

So, any gamers here today? I decided to finally give Elder Scrolls a try and am starting out with Morrowind (it runs well under WINE if nothing else :) Any tips or hints? It’s definitely a different look than the RPG’s I’ve played in the past.

That looks great! The turkey noodles dish started out as turkey dumplings but the dumplings dissolved, not quite entirely, into the broth.
I decided to use the same broth, now enriched by the dissolved dumplings, with the noodle dish. It was the best broth I have ever made, not quite entirely by accident, but I’m not sure I can replicate it.
I just had someone pray for my healing. That’s not unusual lately, I have gotten a lot of prayers. I always express gratitude, never tell them I’m an unbeliever of the most immovable kind. I had told her how I feel funny when I walk, and what was unusual is that she asked me to walk to see if it had changed after her prayer. Nope. But thanks.

Since about mid-day yesterday, I have had a lot of trouble loading LGF on my iPad (Safari). It has been slow to load, and crashes/reloads a lot, eventually resulting in a “death notice” page. I can eventually reload, but it takes a while, and then has crashed a couple of times mid-comment.
It only seems to be LGF: every other site I try on the iPad loads OK, and it is OK on every other device in the house. Any clues?

It happens to me all the time. Makes the iPad all but unusable here.
Also the bouncing bottom of page button. Hit it, wait, hit bottom, bounce back up 100 posts or so, then down, then up, until it finally stabilizes around 60 posts from the bottom.

Jeffrey, when I lived in Chicago, I liked going to a great Hungarian restaurant in the Loop that made incredible chicken paprikash with spatzle and shredded red cabbage in a vinaigrette on the side. I never got enough, it was that good especially when they topped it with thick cottage cheese curds!

My iPhone, too. I think there’s some comment with a weird tag or something. I’m in Spy and it’s fine. The comment had to be around 330 or so. I came back and it wouldn’t load. I went into Spy and limited it to the last 50 comments only and I was fine.
My iPhone can usually handle around 425 comments before it’s just too big. But this was really early in the thread for that to happen.

God is real busy theses days. She must not have realized there is a processing delay in those prayers and the days of instant effectiveness are over.
I think you get a notice though when they will be looked into by the staff of saints as to whether anything can be done and if they think you’re worthy, then you get moved up to the big guy for consideration. It’s tougher to get a prayer through. Lot’s of people clogging the system with bogus requests. Keep checking!
