Trump Tried to Prevent Sally Yates From Testifying to Congress About His Links to Russia

Politics • Views: 44,341

In today’s episode of Trump’s Russia Problem, we learn that the Trump gang tried to intimidate former acting attorney general Sally Yates out of testifying to Congress by invoking “presidential communication privilege.”

The Trump administration sought to block former acting attorney general Sally Yates from testifying to Congress in the House investigation of links between Russian officials and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, The Washington Post has learned, a position that is likely to further anger Democrats who have accused Republicans of trying to damage the inquiry.

According to letters The Post reviewed, the Justice Department notified Yates earlier this month that the administration considers a great deal of her possible testimony to be barred from discussion in a congressional hearing because the topics are covered by the presidential communication privilege.

[…]

Yates and another witness at the planned hearing, former CIA director John Brennan, had made clear to government officials by Thursday that their testimony to the committee probably would contradict some statements that White House officials had made, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Yates was apparently planning to testify this week anyway, but then former Trump transition team member Rep. Devin Nunes abruptly canceled the hearing. That doesn’t look suspicious at all, right?

“As a nation, we begin by declaring that ‘all men are created equal.’ We now practically read it ‘all men are created equal, except negroes.’ When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read ‘all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.’ When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty—to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.”

Communications authored by agency officials—executive branch officials outside the White House—are not subject to the presidential communications privilege unless the documents were specifically solicited and received by the president or an appropriate White House advisor to the president.

Yates was Acting AG at the time, I don’t think the White House can stop her from testifying before Congress. More to the point it looks like rank desperation that they’re even trying.

Jay C  Mar 28, 2017 • 10:56:06am

I wonder if there is (already!!) an unexpressed assumption that no one should worry about “contradictions” in “statements that White House officials had made” since no one expects any statements from this White House to be objectively true, or even make sense.

And all this in less than 70 days!

Here’s something I read somewhere else that’s been bugging me ever since, because I don’t want it to be true, but it might be :(

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: there is no proof of collusion between Trump and Russia to win the 2016 election, and there never will be. If such proof existed, the intelligence community’s mass surveillance network would have found it and leaked it to the Washington Post months ago.

And that’s the thing - proof of this nature is what people are expecting due to all the build-up, and it’s also required to get low-info voters to care about this issue. Is there a possibly it exists and hasn’t been found/uncovered yet?

OCTOBER 13—Today marks the tenth anniversary of the filing of the greatest lawsuit ever.

On this date in 2004, Bill O’Reilly was accused of sexual harassment by Andrea Mackris, an associate producer who worked with the TV host at Fox News Channel. Mackris’s New York State Supreme Court complaint is bursting with examples of the 65-year-old O’Reilly’s alleged sleaziness (which apparently was surreptitiously memorialized via Mackris’s tape recorder).

The lawsuit was settled within two weeks and the parties agreed to confidentiality provisions intended to shroud O’Reilly’s purportedly pervy ways. The legal settlement reportedly included a fat check for the 43-year-old Mackris, who said that O’Reilly could be “paternal and engaging” and then “tyrannical and menacing.”

A decade later, Mackris’s complaint—filed by attorney Benedict Morelli—remains a better read than any of O’Reilly’s subsequent best sellers. Mainly because the lawsuit includes topics such as:

Vibrators
Masturbation lessons
Phone sex
A “short brown” Balinese woman who allegedly was “amazed” when she saw O’Reilly’s penis
Threesomes
The loss of O’Reilly’s virginity in a car at JFK airport
Sex with two Scandinavian stewardesses
A Thai sex show
Al Franken
O’Reilly’s masturbation
O’Reilly’s climaxing
Caribbean shower fantasies
“One of those mitts, those loofa mitts”
Falafel
O’Reilly’s “big cock”
More vibrator-aided ejaculation
So, put aside a few minutes and enjoy the lawsuit again for the first time (23 pages)

I dunno; CA-22 is a pretty conservative district, it seems: it’s the agricultural outback of California: demographically probably closer to Oklahoma than Oakland. AFAICR, Devin Nunes’ field-of-expertise was in ag matters (mainly ag subsidies, water rights, immigrant labor-law avoidance, etc), and that he got put on the Intelligence Committee via the House GOP system of rotating Chairmanships - on the principle, I guess that one GOPer is as incompetent good as another.

He has about as safe a seat as any CA Republican: though I’m sure his district, the State, and the House would find a way to carry on without him…

It occurs to me that the main reason these environmental protections are being undone at the stroke of a pen is because the bag-o’-dicks GOPer congress would have never passed them as legislation - so, Obama’s only option was to resort to EOs.

You just have to (a) run someone in the district,(b) show a series of commercials, television appearances, and online videos/adds tarring EVERY Republican with the misdeeds of the Trump/Ryan administration and (c) have a 10 point policy statement of simple objectives that appeal to voters.

Unfuckingbelievable. The entire goddamned episode was a choreographed stunt. Nunes allowed himself to become a puppet of the very administration he’s ostensibly in charge of investigating.

The weird thing is that Ryan is keeping Nunes on after Trump’s Jeannine Pirro stunt. Trump is trying to lay all blame for the AHCA failure at his feet and overtly trying to destroy his career yet he’s incapable of recognizing the necessity of striking back just as hard. I swear, that guy exemplifies the inherent privilege inherent in being a decent looking white guy. Motherfucker is dumber than a sack of gravel but people still think he’s some kind of political genius.

Not ‘allowed himself to become a puppet’- that makes it sound like he got suckered into it or got played. I think it was completely intentional. He willfully undermined the investigation in order to protect his party and the man whose transition team he served on. That should be grounds for it’s own investigation, imho.

Nothing Ryan has done suggests he knows the first thing about policy. It’s as though he had Cliff Notes version of Atlas Shrugged, and think he can revise health care policy in the blink of an eye with a #betterway flim flam. That failed spectacularly, mostly because it didn’t even survive first contact with the CBO.

8 years to get ready for the moment, and he failed spectacularly. Now, he’s rushing to do tax policy, and that’s almost guaranteed to be an even bigger shit show, in part because his health care plan blew up (and the revenue he was betting on with it), and also because the border adjustment tax nonsense will completely eat the GOP caucus alive because it’s a tax/tariff, and who ends up paying it will be the American people - so higher costs for everyone, with zero benefit.

These are strategic thinkers here. They’ve had years to plan for these outcomes, and here they are running directly into reality and it isn’t pretty.

The only thing that’ll be prettier will be Trump’s infrastructure “plan” that will be dumped on Congress and a GOP unwilling to spend a penny unless there’s cuts made elsewhere.

You know, there’s one place where there’s room for cuts - but the GOP wont go near it because they’ve already committed to Trump’s plan to boost military spending in ways unnecessary and unable to actually improve US security.

Well, if Joey can think like that, then I can say Donald Trump is being held to a lower standard because he is a white male Republican business man.

Right now, the Trump standard is proving to be pretty damn low. Way lower than Obama.

Sure doesn’t say much about white male Republican business men, that’s for sure.

It’s probably my favorite King book. I’m currently on my umpteenth million reading of it. The biggest problem I had with the miniseries (and the new 2-part movie is going the same route), is breaking it into 1st half as kids, 2nd half as adults. It completely obliterates the sense of synchronicity of the events in the two time periods that is such an important element of the book.

The mini-series was horrible IMO. They had so much material to work and flubbed it. I will reserve judgement until I see the trailer and obviously the movie. I have a soft spot for IT, I read it in 6th grade and it scared the shit out of me.

I’ve never heard of any of the people involved, which means it’s either going to be fantastic or end up going straight to Syfy.

Riiight…
Here’s my LTE on that subject:

Sorry, NYT: Andrew Rosenthal is full of [expletive deleted] here.
President Obama couldn’t “work with the opposition” because said opposition made it abundantly clear, basically from the time of his first Inauguration, that they had zero interest in “working” with him. And then went on to prove it. The national Republican Party has made it apparent for decades that the only notion of “bipartisanship” they will entertain in any way is “Democrats give us everything”. And shame on the NYT for - all too often - buying into their absolutist nonsense.

I keep hoping against hope that when I dig down into FB replies on things that an ignorant Trump supporter will see that their info is wrong and admit their ignorance. Fake Florida doctor called the ‘Dutchess’ used ‘Fix-a-Flat’ for plastic surgery

A fake doctor in Florida was sentenced to prison following the death of a plastic surgery patient who died from butt and hip injections consisting of Fix-a-Flat and other hazardous chemicals. Oneal Ron Morris, a transgender woman referred to as “Dutchess,” was sentenced to 10 years in prison and another five years of probation, according to reports.

Morris, 36, was charged with manslaughter and practicing without a medical license in the death of 31-year-old Shatarka Nuby, who died in 2012 following cosmetic enhancements performed by Morris. During the trial, Morris, who had performed hip and butt injections on other women and men in Florida, was accused of injecting clients with various toxic substances from Fix-a-Flat aerosol to cement, mineral oil and Superglue.

It’s the desperation. The Trump Team has pretty much been in panic mode from the beginning. They came in thinking everything was going to be a cakewalk, then their first week was a disaster, followed by a disastrous second week, and so on. They haven’t had any success that lasted longer than the 24 hours of peace that followed Trump clearing the subterranean bar set for his Address to Congress.

[…] Hillary Clinton won by three million votes, which is a massive number in the popular vote. She won more votes than any white man ever, which is incredible when you think of the hundreds’ years history of this country. She won every ethnicity and every class within that ethnicity except white voters. That is also massive to be able to say “I won Black people of every income group, Latinos of every income group, Asian people of every income group, the only race I didn’t win was white people.” It’s not like Hillary Clinton is out of touch with the working class or Hillary Clinton is out of touch with poor people. She won the working class. She won every race. The only people she didn’t win was white voters. That shows a lot.[…]

I think that Hillary’s embrace of the multicultural diverse future of America hurt her. I don’t think it was that she didn’t reach out to the working class.[…]

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) on Tuesday became the first Republican lawmaker to unequivocally call for House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) to recuse himself from investigating Russia’s interference in the presidential election.

“Absolutely,” Jones told the Hill when asked if Nunes should step down.

I like to think the fall of civilization due to climate change will be a slow enough affair to allow lots of quality time to deal with the architects of this disaster — in scorpion pits.

I’m afraid our grandkids will have to go all medieval on them—dig up the bodies, try them, and burn them at the stake. Final Carbon Footprint.

Also, technically the Gandhi glitch was an integer rollover problem, which would also be more akin to Trump, as subtracting anything from his IQ would result in negative numbers.

I know my surprised face is around here somewhere….

President Donald Trump’s companies have been connected to “at least 10 former Soviet businessmen with alleged ties to criminal organizations or money laundering,” according to a report published Tuesday by USA Today.

According to the report, the Trump Organization’s business connections and the allegations against them include:

• A partner in the firm that developed the Trump SoHo Hotel in New York is a twice-convicted felon who spent a year in prison for stabbing a man and later scouted for Trump investments in Russia.

• An investor in the SoHo project was accused by Belgian authorities in 2011 in a $55 million money-laundering scheme.

• Three owners of Trump condos in Florida and Manhattan were accused in federal indictments of belonging to a Russian-American organized crime group and working for a major international crime boss based in Russia.

• A former mayor from Kazakhstan was accused in a federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles in 2014 of hiding millions of dollars looted from his city, some of which was spent on three Trump SoHo units.

• A Ukrainian owner of two Trump condos in Florida was indicted in a money-laundering scheme involving a former prime minister of Ukraine.

re: #269 Unshaken Defiance

This resonates nicely with the DontCare fail
Aetna lied about why they pulled out. It was failed blackmail

It was extortion.

Approve my merger or else the marketplace gets it.

Well, the courts caught them in the act. It was always a sham by the insurers. They weren’t losing money like they claimed either. They just weren’t making as much as them deemed fit an insurer.

313
lawhawk  Mar 28, 2017 • 4:08:56pm

re: #306 blueraven

They can’t move ahead with that suit, even if they won, because it would essentially kill the individual marketplace and push millions off insurance with no alternatives now or in the future. There’s also state contractual obligations in play.

In other words, there’d be chaos and there’d be no one to blame but the GOP who were pushing these suits as an attempt to kneecap Obamacare. Now that they’re in charge, they own what they break (all of it).

The GOP are craven. They will push for a straight up repeal, regardless of the costs, or the consequences.

They will not abide by the fact that they’ve been rebuffed by their own incompetence. Trump wants it done, so he’ll push for yet another attempt. Ryan will push ahead with another version of #GOPDontCare. It’s all they know how to do.

Speaking of gold, look out if someone shows up with 221 pounds of gold…

BERLIN — You could never palm it, flip it or plunk it into a vending machine. But apparently it can be pinched: One of the world’s largest gold coins, a 221-pound Canadian monster called the Big Maple Leaf, was stolen overnight from the Bode Museum in Berlin, the police said on Monday.

The coin is about 21 inches in diameter and over an inch thick. It has the head of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a maple leaf on the other. Its face value is 1 million Canadian dollars, or about $750,000, but by gold content alone, it is worth as much as $4.5 million at current market prices.
