Anti-Choice Activist David Daleiden and Accomplice Charged With 15 Felonies in California

Today, anti-choice fanatic David Daleiden and his accomplice Sandra Merritt were charged with 15 felonies for secretly filming Planned Parenthood under false pretenses.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the charges Tuesday against David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt. The two operate the California-based Center for Medical Progress.

The allegations say the pair filmed 14 people without their consent between October 2013 and July 2015, most of them in San Francisco and Los Angeles counties. They were also charged with criminal conspiracy.

Becerra says they used a fictitious bioresearch company to meet with women’s health care providers and covertly record them.

What are the odds that Trump will pardon him, to cater to his religious right base?

They’re being charged under California law, not federal law, so Trump can’t pardon them. If they are convicted, they could appeal to Jerry Brown for a pardon

If he does, it won’t be immediate. Too much opportunity to play the rubes by milking the “controversy.”

This can lead to real violence if thousands of armed fanatics are incited to descend on LA to interfere with the trial and end the “oppression” by “lawless liberal judges.” It can happen. Daleiden has many connections to forced birthers who are deeply embedded in the fundy church “guest speaker” network. Some encouragement from actual members of the Trump administration is not out of the question either.

“Thousands of armed fanatics?” Please… Regardless of Daleiden’s “connections” very few of these “pro-lifers” ever bother to do more than post angry BS on Facebook and Twitter. Look at the turnout for the “pro-Trump” rallies we’ ve seen of late: attendance in triple digits is usually an over count.
We shouldn’t dismiss the possibility of SOME sort of violent reaction at SOME time: but a sort of White Terror? Unlikely..

Every person who, intentionally and without the consent of all parties to a confidential communication, by means of any electronic amplifying or recording device, eavesdrops upon or records the confidential communication, whether the communication is carried on among the parties in the presence of one another or by means of a telegraph, telephone, or other device, except a radio, shall be punished by a fine not exceeding two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500), or imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison, or by both that fine and imprisonment.  If the person has previously been convicted of a violation of this section or Section 631, 632.5, 632.6, 632.7, or 636, the person shall be punished by a fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison, or by both that fine and imprisonment.

This probably could not have come at a worse time for the GOP. They’re trying to get a continuing resolution passed before Apr 28th to keep the government running and one of the items that the leadership is having to drop from the bill is cutting funding for PP. This announcement is going to send the pro-birth crowd into an uproar and may lead to one or more wingnuts on Capital Hill threatening to filibuster the bill unless the funding for PP is axed. Hell, Trump may very well take up the torch, figuring (in that Forrest Gump way of his) that this will actually boost his polling among “the people that matter.”

Speaking of weather, snow pack, etc., the winter has been short in Colorado. It came late and seems to be exiting early. We got *a lot of snow* for about two or three weeks in December and January. February was warm. March was even warmer. Though there’s some snow falling in the mountains now as I type this, warm weather is coming back later this week.

I posted this yesterday so this is still relevant with the discussion:

Many of us Muslims can be self-absorbed hypocrites who only use liberalism when it suits us and discard it when it doesn’t. It usually comes into motion when bringing up forced hijab policies in Iran and Saudi Arabia and how some of them justify it by claiming they aren’t liberal democracies..so therefore that makes it okay.

Um, no it doesn’t.

Ryan asked him if the administration yet had noticed the huge pile of problems, many of them reeking of borscht, that have piled up on the South Lawn, obscuring the form of Devin Nunes, who was digging another tunnel. Spicer’s answer did not satisfy her, as it would not have satisfied anyone who has both ears, and a capacity for rational thought exceeding that of topsoil.

He goes on to say that CA wouldn’t investigate or indict liberals who did the same things Daleiden did. Later in the post, he says he’s not a lawyer. Since he already knows he’s not a lawyer and probably knows very little about CA’s state laws, what was the purpose of his article? I would hope that anyone who violates the laws of any state or U.S. territory would be investigated, and if they’re indicted, they would be tried. It’s actually very easy to understand the Republicans these days. Willful stupidity and deliberate malice are the foundations. Tax cuts for the rich are the only fixed goal. The evils of starting pointless foreign wars and setting people at each others’ throats domestically are engaged in for entertainment and to distract people from the only goal being tax cuts for the rich. They seek only to rule, and suppress the votes of non-Republicans whenever and wherever possible.

The problem most in the mainstream media have is not a lack of understanding. It is that they dare not print or broadcast these simple truths, most likely because ownership has forbidden that.

When my mom was pregnant with me my dad insisted on buying a nice electric guitar to celebrate, and establish a cool heirloom. My mom hated the idea, they were already cash-strapped. My dad borrowed half the money from his dad and bought a Gibson Les Paul Custom. In 1981.

That’s the guitar I learned how to play on. It’s at my pops house, alongside his 10 other electric guitars.

His most recent purchase was a Cordoba about two years ago. He’s never told me how much he paid for it, my mother only says “several thousand dollars.”

I have a late 70’s Gibson SG that I have not played for years, or played at a gig for decades, but I wanna keep it in the family as an heirloom as well

Axes are tools for a working musician. She Who Must Be Obeyed has one of these:

salviharps.com

which runs about $30,000;

One of these:

Pilgrim Progress 41 Pedal Harp Black gloss finish

which was +/- $7,000 when She bought it, the Starfish, and a 21-string travel harp from an Orkney luthier, which was about $1,500.

The insurance on $40,000 worth of harps is pretty steep, but these are the tools of her trade. She’s classically trained at Eastman, has been playing South American, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Spanish/Sephardic (Ladino), Honky Tonk, Texas Swing, Rock, and Celtic tunes for almost four decades.

San Francisco, actually, here’s the criminal complaint for those interested.

Interesting that they’re not being charged specifically with the forgery of the California driver’s licenses or for their illegal access of the Stem Express computer network. Those facts are laid out in the supporting DOJ investigation and the Stem Express hack is listed as an element of the conspiracy count in #15, but aren’t listed (yet) as separate charges. Given the amount of time it’s taken to prepare the indictment I would’ve expected those acts to be charged as separate criminal line items.

Drum is missing the point by ignoring the criminal actions of these people. Undercover videography is sometimes warranted to cover a story, but only as a last resort. Forging IDs in order to deceive someone and filming them answer deliberately leading questions is rightfully illegal, and unethical.

It’s a hell of an axe. She’s got the Delacour levers that are accurate and significantly increase string longevity. And yes, it’s a $5,400 axe.

That’s a gorgeous instrument. Harp is the only stringed instrument that I find more intimidating than a pedal steel guitar. Ten strings can make me nuts, I can’t imagine what 34 would do to me.

I looked through his tweets; he has some posts from parlamentní listy, a well-known far-right website here in the Czech Republic - they’re a primary source of racist and anti-Muslim propaganda.

The source of funding as well as who in fact actually owns it is, IIRC, dubious…..at best. There’s a deep suspicion among many that it has strong Kremlin ties and seeks to destabilize Czech democracy through active measures (i.e., disinformation).

Lamestream media doesn’t understand “Castle Doctrine”:

[Embedded content]

The outlet does seem to be implying a lot of skepticism about the story, starting with the headline:

‘Stand Your Ground’? Oklahoma man kills 3 home burglars; woman who aided robbers arrested.

This might even invite the inference that the woman was arrested for administering first aid to the unfortunate crooks.

The facts, as given in the text, don’t leave a lot of room for doubt:

(Deputy sheriff) Mahoney said the homeowner’s 23-year-old son used an AR-15 rifle to shoot the three Monday afternoon after they broke through a glass door in the rear of the home.

Their names were not released, but Mahoney said two of the dead were 16 or 17 years old and the third was 18 or 19. The three were found wearing masks and gloves and dressed in black clothing. Brass knuckles and a knife were found among their possessions, he said.

“It looks like self-defense from the preliminary investigation, but that’s all speculative,” Mahoney said. “There’s some speculation as to whether or not that (Stand Your Ground) law applies in this case, the simple answer is I don’t know.”

If SYG doesn’t apply, it would seem that straightforward self defense, recognized in every state, would.

Not that I do not appreciate the job the Coast Guard does in protecting our borders, but $420 million is chump change to the cartels, and represents at best 10% of the total volume.

I have to disagree, that is just what they plan in as an “operating expense”. Considering the obscene profits they make regardless, 10% is nothing; less than most business would pay in taxes and customs fees.

Heck, I can well imagine that they have made arrangements with certain key figures in the government to let a certain share get busted so the DEA bosses are happy with their underlings doing their jobs, meanwhile, the remaining 90% of the volume gets through without a hitch.

ask any DEA man, he’ll say there’s nothing we can do, from the office of the President, right down to me and you

re: #144 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I have mentioned this before, but my girlfriend’s cousin, a pain management doctor in Texas, just bought himself a 16,000-sq. ft. house.

My sister and brother-in-law, who had to declare bankruptcy over medical expenses (she had a bout with cancer and he was in a car accident), wound up living in a 900-square-foot rental.

But anything else would be un-American, right?

Pain management is one the hottest areas in medicine now. You can actually get paid up front if you are in the right part of the country. Finding someone to actually manage chronic pain is difficult though. A lot of doctors who say they are managing pain are really just writing prescriptions for narcotics and eventually get closed down by the DEA. Then the patients are left out in the cold addicted to narcotics with no place to go.

Last week I saw two patients this happened to. They were both told to call me by the clinics since I had once prescribed them narcotics for surgery. Of course, I cannot write a prescription for their chronic back pain. Both of them had been told to go the ER if they went through withdrawals (which they will once the prescription runs out). They were not even from the same clinic. Two separate doctors in my area had their licences suspended in the same week.

The groundbreaking puzzle game “Myst,” for example, one of this year’s finalists, was the best-selling computer game of the 1990s, blending haunting scenery with mind-bending mysteries for players to solve. Pioneering, indeed, but it didn’t quite spawn lines of lunch box snacks or children’s apparel.

“Halo: Combat Evolved,” another finalist, was staple of dorm rooms around the country in the 2000s, but it’s probably not a name mom and dad would recognize as quickly as they might recall Pong, one of the hall of fame’s first inductees.

And the critically acclaimed “Portal,” also on the 2017 list, revolutionized the mechanics of first-person shooters when it came out in 2007, but its unique physics would likely intimidate a non-gamer more at home with the dot-munching simplicity of Pac-Man.

I get annoyed at the 1.5 second cuts in trailers nowadays.

A couple years ago, someone took all the Game of Thrones trailers for season 4, recut them, and set the trailer to Lorde’s cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It was so good that some of the cast members were tweeting out links to the video before it got DMCA’d off of YouTube.

Physicians and nurse practitioners don’t get paid for talking to patients and trying to actually diagnose and treat a problem anymore. You only get paid for procedures. If you don’t do procedures, then you have to run people in and out of the office to just break even. Another problem is EMR (electronic medical records). It actually takes longer to do ERM than to dictate a note.

I actually make less and work longer hours than I did 20 years ago. Fortunately, I really like helping people. It makes it all worthwhile when someone tells me I made a difference in their life.

I hate to say it might take another 20 months for this nightmare to end, but KO is probably right. I’m not expecting a major development in the TrumpRussia scandals, or the emoluments scandals soon, and even if there were, there’s not enough outrage about them yet to bring Trump down. It would have to be some major, black-or-white fiasco, and not all this constant drip, drip, drip of shady deals, to really force Trump out before the midterms. People losing their health insurance would have been that black-or-white fiasco, and for now, the GOP and Trump have pushed that to the back burner.

No, it’s going to be the Republicans staring at the imminent loss of their jobs that will get them moving against Trump.

Seems more like he’s saying there won’t be a wall:

At the same time, Zinke suggested the wall would not be as big or impassible as the president believes is necessary to stop illegal immigrants.

“The border is complicated, as far as building a physical wall,” he said. “The Rio Grande, what side of the river are you going to put the wall? We’re not going to put it on our side and cede the river to Mexico. And we’re probably not going to put it in the middle of the river.”

Electronic defenses may be more appropriate in some areas, Zinke said. Others with imposing physical features may not require additional reinforcements.

It’s saying that we have no clue how this wall thing will be implemented, and that natural borders like rivers and mountains and deserts will be part of the wall.

There was a John Oliver segment a while back about this, where the border was so convoluted in parts where the Rio Grande bends in places, that you could conceivably have US territory cut off from the US.

The river flow is determined by treaty, as is the border itself. The whole notion of a fence would mean the US effectively ceding territory to Mexico to build the wall, since there’s no way Mexico will go for having a wall they don’t want and certainly wont pay for, on their territory (and losing territory/access to the river that is the official border).

Texas landowners along the Rio Grande are not going to want a steenkin’ wall in their backyards.

The whole idea of a 2,000-mile wall separating two allies has to be the all-time dumbest idea in the history of humankind. Considering the standard federal government cost overruns, the wall would bankrupt the nation, even if it could be built.

Speaking of healthcare…

Ms Brotherwood spent three years working in a cystic fibrosis clinic in Los Angeles, after working at Dr Stephenson’s clinic in Toronto.

The differences, she says, were striking.

In Canada, I make clinical decisions. I look at their case and I decide whether or not they would benefit from meeting with me. There, the decision is driven by their insurance,” she says.

Ms Brotherwood says she had to forgo seeing patients who were in real need, just because they did not have the coverage.

Although the decade-long Canadian advantage seen in cystic fibrosis study is striking, numerous studies have shown that Canadians tend to outlive their American counterparts.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Canadians live almost three years longer than Americans overall.

re: #235 Eclectic Cyborg

There aren’t that many companies that do the kind of work that is required (you’d need lots of concrete and steel, plus fabrication and logistics). That drops number of qualified contractors down to a handful.

Even if you do this as design/build, there’s a limited number of companies that’d qualify or are situated to where it even makes sense to want to do this contract.

re: #230 lawhawk

Bids are due today. I’m sure it’s going to be a shitshow of epic proportions, as companies that have zero experience in construction will seek a slice of government pork, while those that have experience decide the fallout from working on this project isn’t worth the cost (as some states/localities warn that doing work on the wall might mean they lose future business with the state/locality)

My sister has seen the bid request by the government. She says if that type of request had been put out by her she would have been fired.

That’s a gorgeous instrument. Harp is the only stringed instrument that I find more intimidating than a pedal steel guitar. Ten strings can make me nuts, I can’t imagine what 34 would do to me.

the proverb goes : harpists spend 1/2their time tuning, and replacing strings, the other half playing an out-of-tune harp.
A good friend of mine is a harpist. A few years back he got a small inheritance which allowed him to commission a new harp. He also has two antique ones, which are amazing.

For Trump to suggest that they’re fighting there now like never before is an insult to all those who have served, not only in Iraq but elsewhere. It’s doubly insulting once you recall Trump got multiple deferments to avoid service in Vietnam.

Many of us Muslims can be self-absorbed hypocrites who only use liberalism when it suits us and discard it when it doesn’t. Um, no it doesn’t.

A lot of people can be self-absorbed hypocrites that use liberalism or the products of liberalism when it suits them and then discard them when it doesn’t. Social conservatives of all stripes have been doing this for a while.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. now has a formidable foe if he wants to run for another term.

Former Milwaukee Police Capt. Earnell Lucas, a vice president for Major League Baseball, is planning to challenge Clarke in the 2018 Democratic primary, according to his campaign adviser.

“Earnell hasn’t announced, but he’s decided to get into this race,” said Sachin Chheda, a political strategist at Nation Consulting. “Earnell is in the process of getting organized.”

Already in campaign mode, Chheda described Lucas as “a dignified man with gravitas, as opposed to what we have now.” Lucas did not return a call for comment.

A Clarke adviser said the sheriff had no comment on Lucas’ candidacy. Clarke and Lucas would have served together in the Milwaukee Police Department for decades and been promoted to leadership roles under then-Chief Arthur Jones before they left in 2002.

re: #13 Jay C

“Thousands of armed fanatics?” Please… Regardless of Daleiden’s “connections” very few of these “pro-lifers” ever bother to do more than post angry BS on Facebook and Twitter. Look at the turnout for the “pro-Trump” rallies we’ ve seen of late: attendance in triple digits is usually an over count.
We shouldn’t dismiss the possibility of SOME sort of violent reaction at SOME time: but a sort of White Terror? Unlikely..

I thought Bundy Ranch had disposed of this kind of argument. There were a couple of hundred armed fanatics there and abortion is an incomparably more important issue to RWNJs than the land (grabbing) rights of a few western cattle barons. The “pro-lifers” are essentially the entire right-wing. It didn’t come to a shoot-out at Bundy Ranch only because the government backed down. That is not an option for the State of California in a criminal proceeding.
Pro-Trump rallies are a bad comparison, the guy is already President so there is no “cause” to push and, more importantly, such rallies are positive by nature and therefore less appealing to the anger-addicted Fox masses.

Less tuning time, more out-of-tune playing time. :)

I usually keep the 12-strings in their cases and play the six-string ones, though.

I borrowed one for a recording once. It stayed well in tune and added a nice lush background to an otherwise boring piece.

If we survive the presidency* of Trump, I imagine Peter Thiel will eventually run for president. When that happens, it will be easy for him to buy all the RWNJ preachers with a bit of his pocket change.

Title is “Santa is a Commie”

Ja, man vill bara skrika
Är som nog made in Kina
Tomten är kommunist
Låt USA få skina
Och skicka största drönaren
Att spränga Nordpolen
Så marknaden får ro till sist
För Tomten är en kommmmmmuuuuunnnnnnnist

I may be wrong on this, but I don’t think Thiel can legally run for president because of dual-citizenship (or in his case multi-citizenship). I know he cannot get a security clearance because of that.

AFAIK one of the reasons so many on the right fawn all over Putin is because he’s “Defending Christendom from teh MOOZLIMS!” and “He don’t put up with any bullshit from THOZ DAMN SAND PEOPLE!”

Thiel’s issue is that is not a natural born citizen. He was born in (West) Germany to German parents. Cruz, though born in Canada, is a natural born US citizen (by virtue of his mother’s citizenship) and was eligible to run even though he held dual citizenship (Canada also has birthright citizenship). There’s technically nothing within the constitution preventing a dual citizen to run, so long as they are a natural born citizen of the US. Though historically, there’s never been (to my knowledge) a dual citizen as president, it’s not technically unconstitutional (probably just a political impossibility).
