Anti-Choice Activist David Daleiden and Accomplice Charged With 15 Felonies in California

Today, anti-choice fanatic David Daleiden and his accomplice Sandra Merritt were charged with 15 felonies for secretly filming Planned Parenthood under false pretenses.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the charges Tuesday against David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt. The two operate the California-based Center for Medical Progress.

The allegations say the pair filmed 14 people without their consent between October 2013 and July 2015, most of them in San Francisco and Los Angeles counties. They were also charged with criminal conspiracy.

Becerra says they used a fictitious bioresearch company to meet with women’s health care providers and covertly record them.

“Thousands of armed fanatics?” Please… Regardless of Daleiden’s “connections” very few of these “pro-lifers” ever bother to do more than post angry BS on Facebook and Twitter. Look at the turnout for the “pro-Trump” rallies we’ ve seen of late: attendance in triple digits is usually an over count.
We shouldn’t dismiss the possibility of SOME sort of violent reaction at SOME time: but a sort of White Terror? Unlikely..

On a more serious note, the complaint has 14 counts for violations of Penal Code 632(a) and one for criminal conspiracy. Here’s what Second 632 says:

Every person who, intentionally and without the consent of all parties to a confidential communication, by means of any electronic amplifying or recording device, eavesdrops upon or records the confidential communication, whether the communication is carried on among the parties in the presence of one another or by means of a telegraph, telephone, or other device, except a radio, shall be punished by a fine not exceeding two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500), or imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison, or by both that fine and imprisonment.  If the person has previously been convicted of a violation of this section or Section 631, 632.5, 632.6, 632.7, or 636, the person shall be punished by a fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison, or by both that fine and imprisonment.

This probably could not have come at a worse time for the GOP. They’re trying to get a continuing resolution passed before Apr 28th to keep the government running and one of the items that the leadership is having to drop from the bill is cutting funding for PP. This announcement is going to send the pro-birth crowd into an uproar and may lead to one or more wingnuts on Capital Hill threatening to filibuster the bill unless the funding for PP is axed. Hell, Trump may very well take up the torch, figuring (in that Forrest Gump way of his) that this will actually boost his polling among “the people that matter.”

It’s right up there with anyone else’s clothing conventions. Is it decent for women to show their knees? Their elbow’s? Breasts? What about men (although they don’t have the same restrictions women often do)? Speaking of weather, snow pack, etc., the winter has been short in Colorado. It came late and seems to be exiting early. We got *a lot of snow* for about two or three weeks in December and January. February was warm. March was even warmer. Though there’s some snow falling in the mountains now as I type this, warm weather is coming back later this week.

He goes on to say that CA wouldn’t investigate or indict liberals who did the same things Daleiden did. Later in the post, he says he’s not a lawyer. Since he already knows he’s not a lawyer and probably knows very little about CA’s state laws, what was the purpose of his article? I would hope that anyone who violates the laws of any state or U.S. territory would be investigated, and if they’re indicted, they would be tried. I think Drum was trying to work Americans’ 1st Amendment right to free speech into his article but got lost along the way, leaving persons like myself shaking their heads.

It’s actually very easy to understand the Republicans these days. Willful stupidity and deliberate malice are the foundations. Tax cuts for the rich are the only fixed goal. The evils of starting pointless foreign wars and setting people at each others’ throats domestically are engaged in for entertainment and to distract people from the only goal being tax cuts for the rich. They seek only to rule, and suppress the votes of non-Republicans whenever and wherever possible.

He goes on to say that CA wouldn’t investigate or indict liberals who did the same things Daleiden did. Later in the post, he says he’s not a lawyer. Since he already knows he’s not a lawyer and probably knows very little about CA’s state laws, what was the purpose of his article? I would hope that anyone who violates the laws of any state or U.S. territory would be investigated, and if they’re indicted, they would be tried. I think Drum was trying to work Americans’ 1st Amendment right to free speech into his article but got lost along the way, leaving persons like myself shaking their heads.

Drum is missing the point by ignoring the criminal actions of these people. Undercover videography is sometimes warranted to cover a story, but only as a last resort. The facts, as given in the text, don’t leave a lot of room for doubt:

(Deputy sheriff) Mahoney said the homeowner’s 23-year-old son used an AR-15 rifle to shoot the three Monday afternoon after they broke through a glass door in the rear of the home.

Their names were not released, but Mahoney said two of the dead were 16 or 17 years old and the third was 18 or 19. The three were found wearing masks and gloves and dressed in black clothing. Brass knuckles and a knife were found among their possessions, he said.

“It looks like self-defense from the preliminary investigation, but that’s all speculative,” Mahoney said. “There’s some speculation as to whether or not that (Stand Your Ground) law applies in this case, the simple answer is I don’t know.”

If SYG doesn’t apply, it would seem that straightforward self defense, recognized in every state, would.

Yeah, that was my point. “Stand Your Ground” is the removal of the duty to retreat in a public venue. The Castle Doctrine, which removes the duty to retreat while in your home, has been the law of the land since before the Revolution.

I have to disagree, that is just what they plan in as an “operating expense”. Considering the obscene profits they make regardless, 10% is nothing; less than most business would pay in taxes and customs fees.

Heck, I can well imagine that they have made arrangements with certain key figures in the government to let a certain share get busted so the DEA bosses are happy with their underlings doing their jobs, meanwhile, the remaining 90% of the volume gets through without a hitch.

I have mentioned this before, but my girlfriend’s cousin, a pain management doctor in Texas, just bought himself a 16,000-sq. ft. house.

My sister and brother-in-law, who had to declare bankruptcy over medical expenses (she had a bout with cancer and he was in a car accident), wound up living in a 900-square-foot rental.

But anything else would be un-American, right?

Pain management is one the hottest areas in medicine now. You can actually get paid up front if you are in the right part of the country. Finding someone to actually manage chronic pain is difficult though. A lot of doctors who say they are managing pain are really just writing prescriptions for narcotics and eventually get closed down by the DEA. Then the patients are left out in the cold addicted to narcotics with no place to go.

Last week I saw two patients this happened to. They were both told to call me by the clinics since I had once prescribed them narcotics for surgery. Of course, I cannot write a prescription for their chronic back pain. Both of them had been told to go the ER if they went through withdrawals (which they will once the prescription runs out). They were not even from the same clinic. Two separate doctors in my area had their licences suspended in the same week.

A couple years ago, someone took all the Game of Thrones trailers for season 4, recut them, and set the trailer to Lorde’s cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It was so good that some of the cast members were tweeting out links to the video before it got DMCA’d off of YouTube.

You’ve had someone to dictate notes to? My doctor just brings in a laptop, or the room has a computer, where they can bring up my information and add to it.

I’m not expecting a major development in the TrumpRussia scandals, or the emoluments scandals soon, and even if there were, there’s not enough outrage about them yet to bring Trump down. It would have to be some major, black-or-white fiasco, and not all this constant drip, drip, drip of shady deals, to really force Trump out before the midterms. People losing their health insurance would have been that black-or-white fiasco, and for now, the GOP and Trump have pushed that to the back burner.

A friend of my daughter is a family physician and apparently spends half her working hours telling patients she won’t write them a prescription for narcotics for their “back pain.” Makes my daughter happy she’s a pediatrician.

I just finished reading Dreamland by Sam Quinones about the opiod addiction epidemic in middle America. I thought the first section was less interesting than the rest of the book, but I was happy I stuck with it as it was, overall, an interesting read.

I think it’s fine that he recognizes that he has no self control and has his wife keep an eye on him. My problem is that he’s going to assume everyone else is just like him. For example, Mr. C. does not need a ‘minder’ when he is out without me and it would be foolish to require him to adhere to Pence’s safeguards.

I think it’s fine that he recognizes that he has no self control and has his wife keep an eye on him. My problem is that he’s going to assume everyone else is just like him. For example, Mr. C. does not need a ‘minder’ when he is out without me and it would be foolish to require him to adhere to Pence’s safeguards.
This is how we start blaming women for being too dangerous to let out without a man, or without being covered head to toe. Seems to me we should require men without self control to stay in, or have a chaperone.

Maybe Pence doesn’t have any self-control, and that’s why he has a chaperone.

There aren’t that many companies that do the kind of work that is required (you’d need lots of concrete and steel, plus fabrication and logistics). That drops number of qualified contractors down to a handful.

Even if you do this as design/build, there’s a limited number of companies that’d qualify or are situated to where it even makes sense to want to do this contract.

4400+ servicemembers couldn’t be reached for comment. They died in service during Operation Iraqi Freedom. 30,000+ others were injured during combat in Iraq.

For Trump to suggest that they’re fighting there now like never before is an insult to all those who have served, not only in Iraq but elsewhere. It’s doubly insulting once you recall Trump got multiple deferments to avoid service in Vietnam.

I’ve heard people spend the last few days getting excited about entirely pedestrian trailers for Justice League and Spider-Man, and goddamn, this is the one that really has the juice. I want more, more, more, more, more, more of this, and that’s exactly what a trailer is supposed to do.

I actually saw an Internet discussion (on Jezebel I think but I’m not sure) about, no really, Wonder Woman’s hairless armpits. “Feminists” were complaining that if Wonder Woman was a true Warrior she wouldn’t waste time or energy shaving her pits.

Gal Gadot asked about this, shrugged and said “According to Greek mythology, which is fiction, Amazons amputated their right breast in order to be better at archery, so should the movie have done that too? They are fantasy goddesses, maybe they never grow armpit hair?”

Not to defend Pence here, but the mindset is more about appearances and minimizing opportunities for rumors, etc. It limits the room for opponents (within and without the administration) to speculate about his doings, avoids the usual whisperings about who’s cavorting with who, etc.

And it has the lovely side effect of reducing women’s employment opportunities dramatically, so win-win!

I thought Bundy Ranch had disposed of this kind of argument. There were a couple of hundred armed fanatics there and abortion is an incomparably more important issue to RWNJs than the land (grabbing) rights of a few western cattle barons. The “pro-lifers” are essentially the entire right-wing. It didn’t come to a shoot-out at Bundy Ranch only because the government backed down. That is not an option for the State of California in a criminal proceeding.
Pro-Trump rallies are a bad comparison, the guy is already President so there is no “cause” to push and, more importantly, such rallies are positive by nature and therefore less appealing to the anger-addicted Fox masses.

They sound great, I just don’t get much call to play them. Both of mine are pretty old and beat up, but the most beat up of the pair (a 70s Epiphone Texan) sounds absolutely incredible. It’s just kinda hard to look at. :)

I may be wrong on this, but I don’t think Thiel can legally run for president because of dual-citizenship (or in his case multi-citizenship). I know he cannot get a security clearance because of that.

Thiel’s issue is that is not a natural born citizen. He was born in (West) Germany to German parents. Cruz, though born in Canada, is a natural born US citizen (by virtue of his mother’s citizenship) and was eligible to run even though he held dual citizenship (Canada also has birthright citizenship). There’s technically nothing within the constitution preventing a dual citizen to run, so long as they are a natural born citizen of the US. Though historically, there’s never been (to my knowledge) a dual citizen as president, it’s not technically unconstitutional (probably just a political impossibility).
