Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn Offers to Testify in Exchange for Immunity

The house of cards starts to tumble
Politics • Views: 44,600

The Wall Street Journal reports that the wall of silence around Donald Trump and his Russian connections is starting to crack.

But so far, nobody is taking Flynn up on his offer — an interesting point that may mean they don’t even need his testimony.

WASHINGTON—Mike Flynn, President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, has told the Federal Bureau of Investigation and congressional officials investigating the Trump campaign’s potential ties to Russia that he is willing to be interviewed in exchange for a grant of immunity from prosecution, according to officials with knowledge of the matter.

As an adviser to Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign, and later one of Mr. Trump’s top aides in the White House, Mr. Flynn was privy to some of the most sensitive foreign-policy deliberations of the new administration and was directly involved in discussions about the possible lifting of sanctions on Russia imposed by the Obama administration.

He has made the offer to the FBI and the House and Senate intelligence committees though his lawyer but has so far found no takers, the officials said.

Ok. But what if he doesn’t really have much information to tell?

A deal for immunity is good for flynn, but how many times have prosecutors thought they had a smoking gun, only to see their efforts evaporate when there was not enough there there?

Would they offer immunity if it was a nothingburger though?

Looks like he knows the fix is in. Anyway, the Republicans don’t care about how deeply Trump is in bed with the Russians, they only want to know who leaked the news.

American companies must be prepared to look at other alternatives.

And what would those alternatives be? If it’s making products in America, I’ll just leave this link right here that explains that the retail price of an iPhone 5 would have jumped from about $650 to over $2000.

Edited to add: the same article says that the US only accounts for about 6% of iPhone sales worldwide. Which is just a reminder from Trump and his supporters, major corporations are multinational entities manufacturing and selling products worldwide.

I’d agree it’s definitely Russian nationalism. Not sure about the religious/ethnic points, though. I suspect like most nationalists seeking power, he uses those elements to gain power, but I’m not sure, what, beyond nationalism and his own power, he is interested in.

I just started reading about book about the Russian Revolutions in 1917, based on the accounts of foreigners in Pedrograd (St Petersberg) at the time. Figured it’d be a good idea to read up on Russia, and that seems like a relevant place to start.

“The Latest: White House is appealing Hawaii federal judge’s ruling that blocks revised travel ban. “

I don’t think anyone in the WH, including Trump, realizes why his 2nd EO keeps getting slapped down in Hawaii. We know it’s partly because some of the evidence that’s being submitted includes statements Trump & Co. have actually said in public about the EO. It’s mighty short-sighted of them to ignore that it’s possible to record their statements and reach the understanding that the 2nd immigration EO is a “less punitive” version of the first one.

Why don’t you try that restaurant Trump treated Mike Pence and his family to when he awarded him the VP slot. The name escapes me now, but I’m sure it’s good if a classy guy like Trump recommended it.

If you had Flynn in your flip-pool, you win.

Flynn and Manafort were always the two most likely to flip. That he’s publicly calling for a deal shows he’s got absolutely no leverage at all. He knows it. The FBI and DOJ know it.

And this just dares the DOJ to indict, precisely because you don’t go saying that you offer to testify in exchange for immunity if you haven’t done anything illegal.

Everyone knows Flynn’s fucked.

The last to know this apparently is the Trump admin, because they still think this isn’t going to amount to anything. Check that, it’s Trump supporters, because they still think they aren’t getting played by Trump, let alone the Russians.

Question for our resident Moon Lawyers. When Congress gives immunity to someone in exchange for testimony, like they famously did to Oliver North, how does that work? Wikipedia seems to suggest its done through legislation, passed and then signed into law. Is that right?

I mean, it makes sense that it would take actual legislation to bind the DoJ from future prosecution. The other thing that I’m learning about the North case is that the prosecution put their entire case and findings together before he testified in front of Congress, and they sought to sequester the prosecutors away from any information he gave. He was then convicted at trial but the Appeals court decided the trial judge didn’t do enough to probe the prosecutions claims and voided the convictions on that basis.

They’re starting to come crashing down, and Flynn’s just the first one. Nunes is heading that way. Manafort’s also likely cutting a deal, and the Senate is pushing ahead and taking testimony on the groundwork.

So even though the House is compromised thanks to Nunes, the Senate’s going ahead and the DOJ is moving ahead too. The FBI needs to be held accountable, but the after-action report here has to come after the investigation is done with Trump and his cabal of cronies.

I was talking about the FBI as the Praetorians, and sadly I’m pretty sure they’re qualified. They installed Trump, so why would they want him removed or seriously threatened? As for the rest, removal would require 19 GOP Senators and (currently) 23 GOP Congressmen to vote to throw him out of office. Na Ga Happen, to paraphrase our last decent Republican President.

The main reason for the Democrats to filibuster Gorsuch is simply to oblige the Republicans to get rid of the filibuster. Gorsuch is getting on SCOTUS. The only open question is whether or not the Republicans have to give something up (i.e., the filibuster) to get that done.

Free Press: Lawyer Shirvell with anti-gay rants loses Michigan law license

A former lawyer with the state of Michigan has lost his law license in a misconduct case related to his public hostility for a gay student leader at the University of Michigan.

Andrew Shirvell’s disbarment was ordered Thursday by a panel at the Attorney Discipline Board. He can appeal to the full board.

Shirvell was an assistant attorney general. He was fired in 2010 after criticizing Christopher Armstrong on an anti-gay blog, on Facebook and during visits to the Ann Arbor campus.

So the two cats that hang out at my house really, REALLY like to rough house. To a stranger, it would be mistaken for a serious cat fight. The tuxedo cat is 7-8 years old and clearly outweighs the 10-month-old kitten by at least six pounds. The kitten likes to jump on the tuxedo and try to bring her down and it has not yet succeeded though it is funny as hell to watch him try. The tuxedo really likes chasing the young whipper snapper around the yard now, when at first she would just tolerate his little ass with a stare-down and the ears pinned back. Fun times at my place.

The words “Nixon” and “moral compass” don’t really belong in the same sentence.

True: but at least Tricky Dick had the sense to know how to ACT “Presidential”, and keep up a respectable facade. In public, anyway: of course he was his usual paranoid sleazeball self away from the eyes of publicity: Donald Trump doesn’t even bother to keep his personality flaws out of sight (unlike his Russian debts); but parades them around to all and sundry. And neither he nor his cult seem to care.

Aside: how things change: I wonder how the Jay C of 1972 would react if he could look ahead and see that he’d be writing anything even remotely positive about Richard Fucking Nixon in 2017?? Thanks, Donald!

Because I can absolutely see Trump pardoning Flynn, saying this whole thing is a distraction cooked up by the liberal media (ignoring the FBI investigation) and having his supporters wholeheartedly parroting that line. This is already the most lawless administration in US history and I don’t see the current Republicans in the House giving up this rare opportunity at a power grab to impeach Trump.

That’d probably be a scope question. What was scope of pardon. What’s the potential for double jeopardy (if there were charges/indictment/trial/conviction) and whether the person is worried about charges not covered by the pardon?

Burdick also comes into play.

Burdick never accepted his pardon. I guess my question in the broadest sense is can Trump just hand Flynn a blanket pardon for any and all crimes he may have committed prior to the date the pardon was issued? And if so can Flynn then turn around and still use his Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination when deposed under oath before Congress?

Yes, it’s a ridiculous hypothetical, but these are ridiculous times. I can seriously see Trump’s team deploying such an obscene stunt to try and unilaterally nip the investigation at the bud.
