Created by Michael Killen and Samm Hodges, and produced by the team at Animal (animalstudio.com), “Downward Dog” is the original web series that provided the inspiration for the upcoming ABC comedy of the same name. ABC’s “Downward Dog” follows the day-to-day life of Nan (played by Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Allison Tolman, “Fargo”), as told by her increasingly lonely and philosophical dog, Martin. The broadcast series is created and written by Samm Hodges and Michael Killen, who will executive produce with Mosaic Media Group’s Jimmy Miller and Sam Hansen, Animal’s Kathy Dziubek, and showrunners Kat Likkel and John Hoberg. “That cannot be true,” Maddow remarked.

“As leader of the transition, he was notified in writing by members of Congress about Flynn’s apparent financial ties to the government of Turkey,” Maddow outlined, referring back to a letter sent by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD). “The transition was also apparently notified twice by Flynn’s own lawyers about his financial relationship with the government of Turkey, but nevertheless, Vice President Mike Pence says he has no idea about any of that.”

Hatch is a political pretzel. He changes his views and says new things depending upon which way the right-wing wind is blowing. I remember the last time he ran for reelection and the Tea Party was very vocal, he was viewed by some GOPers as not being anti-Obama enough, so he suddenly decided he was going to lead the charge against #44. Before then, I seldom read anything he said at all about anything. To keep his seat, he became #44’s harshest, loudest, and most out-spoken critic. After he won the election, he retreated into the background, having very little to say in public.

Unless this guy lived in the First Century CE and witnessed what he’s claiming firsthand, he’s blowing smoke, and he knows it. If he’s basing his tweet on something he read from that century, he still can’t reach the conclusion he has reached and support it because he has no way of knowing how all Christians behaved at that time. Also, few persons in the First Century CE could read or write, so it’s very likely his tweet is based on something he’s read that a few theologians who were literate at the time wrote.

Early Christians were mostly the poorest of the poor, because back then Christianity was actually about charity and helping the meek. The poor at that time made up the bulk of the military. Constantine figured having the same religion as his soldiers would promote camaraderie and help him win, so he converted. Thus, Christianity became the major religion in Europe. It wasn’t because they outlived or out-thought anyone, which is unlikely since they were mostly so poor.

You didn’t miss much. The teachers were a bunch of rubes that I constantly caught in factual errors even when I was 8 or 9 years old. One thought “Israel” referred only to the ancient kingdom, while the modern state was called “Israeli.” Knew another one who pronounced Assyria “Azz-ruh” for some obscure Tex-bonic reason.
When I was really young, like 4 or 5, I thought Bible stories were happening in heaven in the present day, and we were getting a weekly update on the celestial goings-on every Sunday.

true, but xianity did have a compelling story, especially the part that told the downtrodden that they were as good as anybody else and would be exalted in the world to come. traditional roman religion was often a staid civic affair and had a less gripping story, and the poor mostly experienced it as a personal matter in terms of a divine source to appeal to for help. in the first few centuries AD people in the roman empire often turned to exotic religions looking for inspiration and the excitement of mystery and ceremony, and in the end xianity had the best

Imagine how many of his supporters will be heartbroken to discover that the “strong leader” they revere isn’t so strong after all. I don’t know whether he’ll resign or not, but if he does, the reason will be that he’s been out of his depth since he was inaugurated, and he’s finally realizing that when he was attacking #44, he had no idea how difficult the job of being POTUS is. I also can’t overlook the fact that Trump gets bored easily. He’s probably already tired of being POTUS, especially since he now knows that not all of the opposition to him in Congress comes from Democrats.

The job looked different to him when he was on the outside looking in, but now that he’s expected to do the job of #44 and his predecessors, the job is harder than he ever imagined it was. If he does resign, he should call PBO and apologize for all of the attacks he launched at him without cause for the sole purpose of convincing a majority of Americans that he was more competent at everything than he really is.

He’s a naked man, walking the halls of the WH, ranting BS.

Honestly, I can see a set of scenarios that are increasingly bad for the GOP’s long term prospects:

- The best case scenario for them at this point is that somebody steps up and falls on their sword to save Trump’s ass. But who could do so? Manafort? He’s too much of a merc to do that, he’d cut a deal in a heartbeat. Flynn’s already trying to save his own ass, so he’s out of the running. Pence? Not a chance, he’s not going to sacrifice his chance at the Big Chair to save Don’s corpulant ass. Bannon would sooner sell his mother’s soul, so he’s out of the running. And Jared’s family, so not gonna happen. And Rinsed? Even “Party Uber Alles” won’t see him going to jail in the name of Donald Trump.

- The next best case would be Comrade Combover pulling a Nixon, resigning before the formal charges can come so Pence can pardon him and the nation can “heal.” In such a scenario, Trump gets out before the shit truly hits the fan, allowing the GOP to argue that the whole matter is resolved so we can “move forward” under President Pence. The biggest issue they’ll have will be filling the slots that will resign (voluntarily or otherwise) in the wake of Trump’s departure.

- The bad scenarios start with the GOP visibly axing the congressional investigations, either by canning them or visibly manipulating the results to insist that nothing criminal happened. That might seem like a viable option right now, but what it would create in the long run in a festering wound that would leave the party vulnerable next year, but most especially in 2020 if Trump runs for reelection under the cloud of having avoided prosecution through partisan politics.

- Next down on the bad side of things would be the appointment of an independent prosecutor or a select committee, taking the GOP out of a direct role over the investigation. Not only would the whole mess drag on, probably into the midterms and possibly into the 2020 elections, but there would be a very serious chance of criminal charges being recommended that they would find virtually impossible to bury.

- And the absolute worst scenario right now would the FBI coming out in the next few months and announcing the recommendation of criminal charges against one or more members of the Trump administration. Because one that happens, all bets are off. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III will no doubt put the kibosh on moving forward with formal charges, but that will only add fuel to the fire. In such a scenario, things for the GOP would go from “bad” to “totally screwed,” as they’d have virtually no argument against articles of impeachment that didn’t begin and end with “He’s one of us!” Not a winning strategy when the guy whose ass you’re defending is polling worse than syphilis.

But over the years, the U.S. has carved out allowances for family visits, journalism, and other social causes. Most commercial activity is still forbidden, though, with a few exceptions, such as selling medical supplies or food. Golf isn’t on that list.

Yeah, we remember that time he wanted to go open a golf course in Cuba, but that embargo thing made things tough. So he tried to find a way around it.

Remember, Pence was on his way to losing the governorship in Indiana before he was picked for VP. A bad agenda minus Trump’s psycho charisma is just a bad agenda, and I don’t think Pence would be able to sell the American people on a lot of it.

One of these days Josh Marshall is going to win some major journalism awards. He’s been doing some major dot-connecting of late.

Lauren Rozen reports tonight that Cohen-Watnick is apparently a family friend of Frank Gaffney, one of DC’s most prominent and influential Islamophobes as well as someone who is closely tied into the Bannon/Breitbart world. Rozen was also told that Cohen-Watnick was first rejected by the CIA before going to work at the DIA. These are simply shreds of biography. But they add up to a familiar picture, one that makes sense of his apparently close relationship with Flynn.

In this latest turn of events, Cohen-Watnick apparently scanned through highly classified material looking for something to justify Trump’s ridiculous wiretapping tweet. He then found a way to get that material to Devin Nunes when Nunes visited the White House in the middle of the night. Nunes then returned to the White House the next day to present the information to Trump. Again, it’s not altogether clear to me whether Nunes or Trump actually realized that the material was of little real consequence and had no bearing on Trump’s tweets. However that may be, at a minimum Cohen-Watnick was using his access to highly classified information to mount a political pushback campaign against the various Trump/Russia probes and quite likely breaking the law to do so.

But Bart Gellman, who has a very granular understanding of the modalities and rules tied to handling this kind of material, suggests an additional possibility: that Cohen-Watnick et al. had this material because they were using their privileged access to the nation’s top secrets to keep tabs on the FBI’s investigation of Trump and his top associates. Yes, read that last sentence again, I’ll wait.

Hatch is a political pretzel. He changes his views and says new things depending upon which way the right-wing wind is blowing. I remember the last time he ran for reelection and the Tea Party was very vocal, he was viewed by some GOPers as not being anti-Obama enough, so he suddenly decided he was going to lead the charge against #44. Before then, I seldom read anything he said at all about anything. To keep his seat, he became #44’s harshest, loudest, and most out-spoken critic. After he won the election, he retreated into the background, having very little to say in public.

The things some people will say/do to keep a job.

A job that pays upwards of a quarter million Grade A, US taxpayer funded dollars a year plus primo benefits. And the parties are FAB! Talk about living the life.

I won’t forget her own words on the campaign about not taking anything for granted. I think she knew this wasn’t going to be pretty. I remember all the emails I got about the concerns right up until the day of the vote.

You know, it’s like sports. I just had local ESPN radio on as I was cleaning up some stuff in my kitchen. I just heard a guy going off on Lebron James and how he is the most over rated player in NBA history. And if the Cavs don’t win another playoff game, it is proof of just how bad he is.

Rational? Americans don’t so rational anymore.

I said it to Decatur Deb the other evening. This was a unique, 100 year storm. There were so many things that have never happened in an election in this country before.

Could Clinton have done better?

Tell me how you would ever know? What is your reasoning? Are you considering all factors?

Instead of finding a safe space to live in and give reason to myself of why she lost, I’m going to go with the now well-worn: It is what it is.

Our country is what it is. Our country did this. To me it isn’t what Clinton didn’t do.

I always will ask how much the “she has this in the bag, no way she can lose to this oaf” factored in?

Despite offering to testify before the House and Senate intelligence committees and “fully cooperate” in their probes of Russian interference in the 2016 election, Roger Stone today put sharp limits on what he’s prepared to say: He won’t identify a mysterious intermediary who gave him advance notice about WikiLeaks document dumps, and he won’t respond to any questions about his continuing communications with President Trump.

In a combative interview Thursday with Yahoo News, Stone — a longtime adviser to Trump — pulled back from an initial promise to answer every question when he testifies before the panels.

“[That’s] probably the one question I would decline to answer,” Stone said in the interview, when pressed on the identity of a source who gave him information from WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange last summer, tipping him off to the imminent release of materials damaging to Hillary Clinton that had been hacked by Russian intelligence. “When you go up there and testify under oath, you will refuse to answer questions about your intermediary?” Stone was asked.

“I would not give up a source any more than you would,” he responded. Stone later added another issue that he will consider off-limits to the committees. After acknowledging that he remains in touch with President Trump and has “heard from him recently,” Stone said that he won’t testify about what they talk about, but insisted their communications are not about the Russia probes. “I’m not going to disclose individual conversations with the president or communications with him,” he said.

Stone’s role in the Russia probes has attracted increasing attention in recent weeks, amid disclosures that he had a series of private direct message communications with Guccifer 2.0 — an online persona that U.S. officials concluded was a front for Russian intelligence. In addition, Stone’s tweets last summer indicating that he had advance information about WikiLeaks releases raised suspicions that he was communicating with another key actor in the Russia probe — and the possibility that this may constitute evidence of collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump camp.

“It will soon [be] Podesta’s time in the barrel,” Stone tweeted on Aug. 21. Then: “Wednesdy @HillaryClinton is done. #Wikileaks,” Stone tweeted on Oct. 2, five days before the first release by WikiLeaks of Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails.

“An individual associated with the Trump campaign accurately predicted the release of hacked emails weeks before it happened,” Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the ranking Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, said Thursday during a committee hearing, in an obvious reference to Stone, and citing it as evidence of possible collusion. “This same individual also admits to being in contact with Guccifer 2.0, the Russian intelligence persona responsible for these cyber operations.”

But Stone repeatedly insisted that these contacts and tweets were entirely innocent, and can be easily explained. He rejected the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies that Guccifer 2.0 and WikiLeaks had any connections to the Russians — or even that the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and the Podesta emails was carried out by the Russians.

It likely has to do with the fact that “thief” is an easy, single syllable word. Whereas embezzler is a three syllable word. For whatever reason, when we speak, we tend towards simpler words. Nah, Chaffetz is far from the first to bring up this stupid meme: I’ve seen it cited all along from the start of Trump’s campaign: the notion - YUUUGELY prevalent among his cultists - that Donald Trump is so rich, that he is/will be/would be immune to “Washington corruption”. Which of course, they like to see - only - as “personally profiting financially from being in office”.

Never minding, of course, that NO ONE (probably not even Trump himself) is absolutely sure as to just how “rich” he is; how much in real assets he possesses, how “encumbered” those assets are, what he owes, and to who. Still less the “personally profiting financially from being in office” bit: Donald seems to simply outsourced that enterprise to his family: the hardcore Trumpistas still don;t seem to care.

It goes to motive. The idea most people have is that you don’t need to steal something that you already have a lot of (I don’t need to steal a loaf of bread because I have two at home). The only thing chan trolls care about as much as ethics in gaming journalism and securing a future for white children is access to an internet that’s unfettered by snooping corporate interlopers. The entire identity of a Trump-loving 4chan poster is wrapped up in the anonymity of the internet, and the ability to do whatever you want online without consequences, whether it’s telling elaborate inside jokes on message boards or harassing liberal journalists on Twitter. The elimination of the FCC’s Obama-era privacy protections is a major blow to the idea of a free and open internet.

The trolls probably should have seen this coming when Trump selected the outspoken net neutrality opponent Ajit Pai as FCC commissioner, who voted against the privacy rules when he was a humble commission member. Still, they’ve spent the 12 hours since the news of the rollback broke in a state of apoplectic anxiety. The current top post on Reddit’s popular The_Donald board reads “Let’s discuss this ISP privacy bill.” All three of the top comments are Trump supporters who are against it. “I think there needs to be a new bill that introduces an all encompassing privacy protection,” a Redditor named StirlingG wrote. “I don’t like ISPs or websites selling my shit, and I don’t see any major positives to this.”

“Keep note: HUGE amounts of ‘former’ donald trump supporters shitposting,” a user named bloodfist45 observed, further down the post. “I believe they’ll only become former if Trump begins to vote on stuff like this,” another Redditor responded. “This bill is anti American. Data collection on massive levels is anti-american.”

Some responses were less measured. “I’m hopeful that Trump will veto the fuck out of this bill,” user 51Bootwearer wrote. (Just to reiterate: He’s not going to veto the bill.) “ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?” jdovejr echoed. “VETO THIS SHIT NOW.”

And it kind of loops around to the very idea that wealth imbues virtue. That someone stealing so they can subsist is inherently a more evil person than someone who steals because greed, simply because the latter has more already than the former.

While I’m sure that some of it is driven by the idea that wealth imbues virtue, I don’t think that’s it entirely. I think part of it is that people who aren’t wealthy try to think of how they would, hypothetically, act in such a situation. When you go from making 40k a year to making 4m a year, the idea that you’d steal an extra 300k seems ridiculous. But they don’t consider the social/economic pressures that play on those in the wealthiest parts of our society.

It’s akin to when fans complain about professional athletes holding out for more money (“I’d play for the league minimum!” “You’ve already made thirty million, why are you holding out for another five?”). The calculus changes when you go from the outside looking in to actually being in that situation.

Some people simply aren’t capable of understanding how/why someone who apparently has everything would be willing to act illegally for (relatively) just a little bit more.

Obama administration officials were so concerned about what would happen to key classified documents related to the Russia probe once President Trump took office that they created a list of document serial numbers to give to senior members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, a former Obama official told NBC News.

The official said that after the list of documents related to the probe into Russian interference in the U.S. election was created in early January, he hand-carried it to the committee members. The numbers themselves were not classified, said the official.

The purpose, said the official, was to make it “harder to bury” the information, “to share it with those on the Hill who could lawfully see the documents,” and to make sure it could reside in an Intelligence committee safe, “not just at Langley [CIA hq].”
