I’ve been playing this song for the best part of two decades. For my very oldest fans and friends, this is the one they think of when they think of me, even though it’s a cover. I love the song deeply. I’ve always been convinced it’s about Gene Kelly’s character in the movie “Viva Kneivel!”, an alcoholic ex-stunt motorcyclist.

Performance wise, this arrangement channels Michael Hedges maybe more than anything else I’ve ever come up with. Not just the guitar techniques, but the vocal, even the bare feet.

I’ve played it better than this, but I’ve played it worse. It’s kinda slow: I was a bit bipolar, so I’m dragging it back, fighting myself, and I probably over-compensated. Maybe that makes it me.

In a surprise to many New Mexicans, a press release from the White House made clear that the groundbreaking ceremony would be very close-to-home for residents of the Land of Enchantment. What caused some confusion was that it would also be along the border with New Mexico and Colorado.

During a press conference Friday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer informed the White House press pool that the groundbreaking would occur at a pull-off along US Highway 285 south of Antonito, Colo. and about 15 feet north of the border between the United States and New Mexico. Most members of the media did not take notice of the location but CNN correspondents did ask for clarification since Colorado does not actually border the nation of Mexico. Unfortunately due to an ongoing dispute between Spicer and the CNN network those questions were ignored.

This has been a fight that has been going on for a long time here.

The Pine Ridge Reservation is dry. Whiteclay is right on the state line in Sheridan County (the county to my northeast). The reservation and South Dakota have been trying to get Nebraska to rein in the beer sales in Whiteclay for years.

It finally became an issue to people in Nebraska, and people in the state have turned against the beer stores in question. Sheridan County is the licensing authority for the stores, and it makes a significant fraction of its county budget from those licenses.

The county just renewed the licenses, which are subject to review by the liquor control board. The board cited inability to properly police Whiteclay (Sheridan County does not have a sufficiently large sheriff’s department - like my county they have their one car and one deputy).

Under state law, inability to properly police an area is grounds to deny a liquor license.

Reps. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio 8th) and Ted Budd (R-NC 13th) introduced the “Drain the Swamp Act” (really).

It would require all agency headquarters in Washington to relocate their headquarters outside the DC Metro area.

Davidson claims the reason for this is five of the ten richest counties in the USA are around Washington.

He also has no concept of how much such a thing would cost, why it is more efficient and effective for government workers to be near each other, &c. In short, he’s a small-l libertarian conservative.

Only a couple days after stating the government’s attempt to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, Teresa May’s government says it is prepared to go to war to defend Gibraltar’s sovereignty.

Spain dropped its opposition to Scottish independence (Spain opposed it on the grounds it might encourage Spanish regions to do the same) to seek entrance into the EU.

Gibraltar voted overwhelmingly in the Brexit referendum to remain in the EU.

This is exactly the sort of thing the EU was intended to eliminate (warfare between European nations).

Spain has abandoned plans to stop an independent Scotland from joining the EU amid an escalating row with Britain over the future of  Gibraltar.

Alfonso Dastis, the Spanish foreign minister, said his Government will not block a future Scottish EU membership bid, giving a boost to Nicola Sturgeon.

It came as Sir Michael  Fallon, the Defence Secretary, suggetsed that Britain is ready to go to war to defend the sovereignty of Gibraltar. He vowed to go “all the way” to protect the territory.

I’m not sure what’s up here. Gibraltar’s last referendum was to overwhelmingly stay in the United Kingdom. The Treaty of Utrecht specifies that a referendum to leave the United Kingdom means the territory returns to Spain.

The many times I travelled to Gibraltar by car, the border between Gibraltar and Spain was always backed up (the Spanish seemed to hassle people on UK passports, but always just waved me through on an American one).

Under Franco, Spain tried to force Gibraltar to “give up” and rejoin Spain with a blockade of the border and cessation of telecoms (something like the Berlin blockade). That failed.

Since Franco died, other than hassling people at the border Spain has been pretty much quiet about the Gibraltar issue. This round seems to have been touched off by the UK’s Defence Minister (not by Spain).

My brother-in-law (her brother) got even with the Northfield Bank some years ago … he bought a house they repossessed … the land paperwork was fouled up though, and because of that he got the house next to it for nothing. Northfield Bank tried to get out of it, but the title company said to them “too bad.”

Already been done. Much of the Pentagon’s work is done at Field Operating Agencies (FOAs), including ours in Lower Alabama. We were on the phone to our liaison office when the disputed airliner flown by alleged terrorists hit the imaginary building.

I think there’s somewhat less than meets the eye here regarding the latest Gibraltar flap: there were some misunderstandings about the territory which were or weren’t mentioned in the formal Brexit negotiations, whereupon some senior Tory politician shot his mouth off on TV about Thatcher and the Falklands ( yeah, I know: what a shock!), and the press picked up on it to try to make a BFD over the belligerent tone (another shocker: war talk sells papers/ads!).
Formally, the Government (intelligently) dismissed the military-action talk: but it’s embarrassing nevertheless- the Gibraltar situation just points out another flaw in the argument that Brexit is going to be some grand triumph of whatever.
I think a more important news item was that Spain made a public statement (unnecessarily right now IMO, but never mind) that they wouldn’t veto EU membership for an independent Scotland, if it ever comes to that.

On a grander scale, much of DC’s work is done at the 11 (12) Federal regions. Has been since the ’70s or so. Now that we’ve retired the stagecoaches on the Boston Post Road, 11 regions is a better way to organize 350 million people than 50-60 accidental “states”.

Connecticut may become first U.S. state to allow deadly police drones

Connecticut would become the first U.S. state to allow law enforcement agencies to use drones equipped with deadly weapons if a bill opposed by civil libertarians becomes law.

The legislation, approved overwhelmingly by the state legislature’s judiciary committee on Wednesday, would ban so-called weaponized drones in the state but exempts agencies involved in law enforcement. It now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The legislation was introduced as a complete ban on weaponized drones but just before the committee vote it was amended to exclude police from the restriction.

When I was in VA-75 (the Sunday Punchers, an A-6 squadron), we had an Air Force pilot attached to the squadron as part of a Navy/Air Force exchange programme. (I’m not sure of the details about that, but I gather it was to teach members of the opposite service about tactics and strategy.)

After his first nighttime carrier landing, the Air Force pilot addressed the squadron at quarters, saying “I’ll never rag on Navy pilots again.”

A close look at former network star Megyn Kelly’s book, Settle For More, reveals her view that Fox’s internal company culture may be designed to carry water for harassers.

Speaking about former chief Roger Ailes, who Kelly accused of harassment (which was part of the reason he was shown the door), Kelly wrote that “the entire structure was set up to isolate and silence” accusers, and that those who did come forward previously “didn’t manage to effect any change.”

The explanation, while obviously just the opinion of the author, could go a long way toward explaining why Bill O’Reilly has retained his grip at the network while Fox News has spent millions of dollars to make his accusers disappear.

A good article up on TPM: Why Unified Republican Government Went Rapidly off the Rails

Cliff Stearns, a Republican who represented northern Florida for 12 terms in Congress, told TPM that much of the dysfunction today stems from the fact that Trump “lacks familiarity with how Congress works.” But so, too, do many of the congressional Republicans attempting to work with him. Seventy-seven percent of all Republicans in Congress have never served under a Republican president, and a full quarter of the House of Representatives has two years of congressional experience or less.

“None of these people were there when we had the markups for the Affordable Care Act,” said Stearns, who served on one of the key committees to craft the 2010 bill. “They weren’t there watching all the amendments we had and all of our differences of opinion. It would have been helpful to have that kind of experience.”

Inexperience aside, the growing public hostility between Trump and members of his own party has Hill veterans flummoxed. In particular, they point to Trump’s Twitter tirades against members of the Freedom Caucus—many of whom are more popular in their districts than the president, and largely immune to threats of a primary challenge.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” said Stan Collender, a former top staffer on the House and Senate Budget Committees, who worked under both Republican and Democratic administrations. “He’s attacking a group he is desperately going to need in the future, and they’re probably the least politically vulnerable members of his party.”

Collender said Trump should have invested several months in getting to know the members of Congress that his legislative agenda depends on before twisting their arms for votes on an extremely unpopular Obamacare repeal bill and then publicly shaming them for not falling in line.

“He’s thinking of them as underlings and he’s the CEO,” he said. “But he’s not Congress’ CEO, he’s the president of the United States. They don’t work for him, they work for their constituents.”

The Trump administration has prepared a new executive order that would extinguish regulatory controls designed to prevent US companies profiting from and encouraging the spread of “conflict minerals” that are inflaming violence in Congo.

A draft executive order, composed last week and obtained by the Guardian, proposes a two-year suspension of a portion of the Dodd-Frank financial reforms that requires US firms to carry out due diligence to ensure that the products they sell include no minerals mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or neighbouring countries. The regulation was widely applauded as a mainstay of attempts to cut the umbilical chord between big business and violent warlords who have spread unrest throughout the Congo and caused the deaths of more than five million people since the 1990s.

Russia backs Assad as a client state (hey, they gotta sell weapons to someone). Iran backs Assad too, though that support is frayed a bit because Hizbullah doesn’t particularly care to keep losing resources in a civil war when it could be better spending its time prepping for conflict with Israel (and any lessons learned in a Syrian civil war will benefit Hizbullah too). Iran can’t keep pouring resources into Syria either, not with oil prices being what it is.

Obama tried threading a line between all these awful options to find the least bad one, and now it appears Trump’s willing to push towards a new direction.
