Guitar Tab finally available for this song at http://jongomm.com/guitar-tabs Every technique is explained. It’s a complete walkthrough guide to the song.

High And Dry is the 7th video from from the Acoustic Asylum series. Get the song and album and Pay What You Want from http://jongomm.com/music Also on iTunes http://j.mp/iTunesGomm or Google Play http://j.mp/GooGom or Amazon http://j.mp/AmzGomUSA

I’ve been playing this song for the best part of two decades. For my very oldest fans and friends, this is the one they think of when they think of me, even though it’s a cover. I love the song deeply. I’ve always been convinced it’s about Gene Kelly’s character in the movie “Viva Kneivel!”, an alcoholic ex-stunt motorcyclist.

Performance wise, this arrangement channels Michael Hedges maybe more than anything else I’ve ever come up with. Not just the guitar techniques, but the vocal, even the bare feet.

I’ve played it better than this, but I’ve played it worse. It’s kinda slow: I was a bit bipolar, so I’m dragging it back, fighting myself, and I probably over-compensated. Maybe that makes it me.

April Fool’s Day joke from the Los Alamos County Daily Post:

Whie House Announces Border Wall Between Colorado and New Mexico

More at the link:

In keeping with campaign pledges made in the 2016 presidential election, the Trump Administration announced that a groundbreaking for the first stage of a border wall between the United States and Mexico would be conducted today.

In a surprise to many New Mexicans, a press release from the White House made clear that the groundbreaking ceremony would be very close-to-home for residents of the Land of Enchantment. What caused some confusion was that it would also be along the border with New Mexico and Colorado.

During a press conference Friday afternoon, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer informed the White House press pool that the groundbreaking would occur at a pull-off along US Highway 285 south of Antonito, Colo. and about 15 feet north of the border between the United States and New Mexico. Most members of the media did not take notice of the location but CNN correspondents did ask for clarification since Colorado does not actually border the nation of Mexico. Unfortunately due to an ongoing dispute between Spicer and the CNN network those questions were ignored.

A lawyer representing the four embattled beer stores in Whiteclay, Nebr. (pop. 12, which sell millions of cans of beer across the state line to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation) claims the attempt to revoke their licenses (due to lack of policing in Whiteclay) is “politically motivated.”

Oh gosh, isn’t this some of that regulation Trump wants to get rid of? Of course these four liquor stores should be able to sell millions of cans of beer a year, even if their product kills and maims people?

My first thought on this was a bit different. Mine was if adults want to buy beer they should be able to. Is this a keep the firewater away from Injuns motivated thing? I dunno.

This has been a fight that has been going on for a long time here.

The Pine Ridge Reservation is dry. Whiteclay is right on the state line in Sheridan County (the county to my northeast). The reservation and South Dakota have been trying to get Nebraska to rein in the beer sales in Whiteclay for years.

It finally became an issue to people in Nebraska, and people in the state have turned against the beer stores in question. Sheridan County is the licensing authority for the stores, and it makes a significant fraction of its county budget from those licenses.

The county just renewed the licenses, which are subject to review by the liquor control board. The board cited inability to properly police Whiteclay (Sheridan County does not have a sufficiently large sheriff’s department - like my county they have their one car and one deputy).

Under state law, inability to properly police an area is grounds to deny a liquor license.

This ought to work well.

Reps. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio 8th) and Ted Budd (R-NC 13th) introduced the “Drain the Swamp Act” (really).

It would require all agency headquarters in Washington to relocate their headquarters outside the DC Metro area.

Davidson claims the reason for this is five of the ten richest counties in the USA are around Washington.

He also has no concept of how much such a thing would cost, why it is more efficient and effective for government workers to be near each other, &c. In short, he’s a small-l libertarian conservative.

Russ Douthat claimed on Twitter (since deleted, but a screen shot was saved by Wonkette) that conservatives have better sex than liberals, because conservatives have a higher libido.

(If they have a higher libido, which he asserted with no evidence, I’m guessing it’s because of sexual repression.)

Only a couple days after stating the government’s attempt to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, Teresa May’s government says it is prepared to go to war to defend Gibraltar’s sovereignty.

Spain dropped its opposition to Scottish independence (Spain opposed it on the grounds it might encourage Spanish regions to do the same) to seek entrance into the EU.

Gibraltar voted overwhelmingly in the Brexit referendum to remain in the EU.

This is exactly the sort of thing the EU was intended to eliminate (warfare between European nations).

Spain has abandoned plans to stop an independent Scotland from joining the EU amid an escalating row with Britain over the future of
Gibraltar.

Alfonso Dastis, the Spanish foreign minister, said his Government will not block a future Scottish EU membership bid, giving a boost to Nicola Sturgeon.

It came as Sir Michael
Fallon, the Defence Secretary, suggetsed that Britain is ready to go to war to defend the sovereignty of Gibraltar. He vowed to go “all the way” to protect the territory.

I’m not sure what’s up here. Gibraltar’s last referendum was to overwhelmingly stay in the United Kingdom. The Treaty of Utrecht specifies that a referendum to leave the United Kingdom means the territory returns to Spain.

The many times I travelled to Gibraltar by car, the border between Gibraltar and Spain was always backed up (the Spanish seemed to hassle people on UK passports, but always just waved me through on an American one).

Under Franco, Spain tried to force Gibraltar to “give up” and rejoin Spain with a blockade of the border and cessation of telecoms (something like the Berlin blockade). That failed.

Since Franco died, other than hassling people at the border Spain has been pretty much quiet about the Gibraltar issue. This round seems to have been touched off by the UK’s Defence Minister (not by Spain).

BROADWATER, NE—In a move aimed at protecting the nation’s natural and historical heritage from potential threats, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced this week it had relocated all major American landmarks into one big, carefully guarded pile in the center of the country.

Spanning 25 square miles in a remote section of western Nebraska, the densely packed, 5,000-foot-high mound is said to contain every prominent national monument, historically designated building, and notable piece of public infrastructure from across the United States.

I think there’s somewhat less than meets the eye here regarding the latest Gibraltar flap: there were some misunderstandings about the territory which were or weren’t mentioned in the formal Brexit negotiations, whereupon some senior Tory politician shot his mouth off on TV about Thatcher and the Falklands ( yeah, I know: what a shock!), and the press picked up on it to try to make a BFD over the belligerent tone (another shocker: war talk sells papers/ads!).
Formally, the Government (intelligently) dismissed the military-action talk: but it’s embarrassing nevertheless- the Gibraltar situation just points out another flaw in the argument that Brexit is going to be some grand triumph of whatever.
I think a more important news item was that Spain made a public statement (unnecessarily right now IMO, but never mind) that they wouldn’t veto EU membership for an independent Scotland, if it ever comes to that.

On a grander scale, much of DC’s work is done at the 11 (12) Federal regions. Has been since the ’70s or so. Now that we’ve retired the stagecoaches on the Boston Post Road, 11 regions is a better way to organize 350 million people than 50-60 accidental “states”.

Something light:
Connecticut may become first U.S. state to allow deadly police drones

Connecticut would become the first U.S. state to allow law enforcement agencies to use drones equipped with deadly weapons if a bill opposed by civil libertarians becomes law.

The legislation, approved overwhelmingly by the state legislature’s judiciary committee on Wednesday, would ban so-called weaponized drones in the state but exempts agencies involved in law enforcement. It now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The legislation was introduced as a complete ban on weaponized drones but just before the committee vote it was amended to exclude police from the restriction.

Here’s a familiar story. To whom does someone turn when national banks refuse to lend money to them? Why, Russian banks, of course! And I’m not talking about Trump.

None other than Marine Le Pen got beaucoup loans from Russian banks for her presidential campaign. Read this story and reflect on how familiar it sounds.

bbc.com

You’d almost think that Russian banks are trying to buy Western politicians. (Makes me wonder if there is some digging to do in Dr. Jill Stein’s financials.)

Mr. Trump is seventy years old. I don’t really think he is going to change now.

(I might start wondering about the power of prayer and religious faith if he did. I’m pretty sure Mr. Trump is not going to derail my lack of faith.)

It would take a major “road to Damascus” event to get Trump to change his ways. I don’t see one happening, since Trump rarely ventures outside his little bubble of security.

The only time I flew on a cargo plane was to land on an aircraft carrier on a C-2. Being yanked to a stop in three hundred feet was not fun.

Our (Army) commander made 1-star and went through a multi-service “Charm School”. He was very impressed with a carrier landing, but said the wildest thing was a run with the Coast Guard SAR boats out of Cape Disappointment. They cancelled training on his first try because the weather was too nice.

When I was in VA-75 (the Sunday Punchers, an A-6 squadron), we had an Air Force pilot attached to the squadron as part of a Navy/Air Force exchange programme. (I’m not sure of the details about that, but I gather it was to teach members of the opposite service about tactics and strategy.)

After his first nighttime carrier landing, the Air Force pilot addressed the squadron at quarters, saying “I’ll never rag on Navy pilots again.”

It would require all agency headquarters in Washington to relocate their headquarters outside the DC Metro area.

Davidson claims the reason for this is five of the ten richest counties in the USA are around Washington.

davidson.house.gov

He actually says:

“Five out of ten of the richest counties in the country are located in Washington. Something is wrong here,” said Davidson. “In addition to cost benefits, my hope is that government agencies will reorient themselves to what is most important- the people they serve.”

Not to be snarky, Davidson (ok, I’m being snarky) there are no counties in Washington, D.C.; Washington state is different, but I don’t think he meant the state.

That bill will never go anywhere, but what does he mean by getting bureaucrats to live near the people they affect? Are we going to all telework from all over the county, ‘cause relocating the an office building to a new location won’t change squat. And, dispersing employees to be among the people to get their perspective is a tad ineffectual when it comes to actually being able to do parts of our job. Let alone the fact that we need to be physically near the center of power for certain aspects of our jobs. He gonna pay to relocate me from my house and family and friends and my life because he thinks it’s “a bad THING”?

“Inside the beltway” is not a physical location issue on thought, it is an institutional issue. These people do not understand didly. Currently, I work (location wise) outside the beltway. It has zero effect on how this Federal Agency thinks. Gah.

Birth Control Works  Apr 3, 2017 • 6:57:47am

There’s been a lot of dirty laundry aired about Fox News recently over allegations that host Bill O’Reilly spent much of his career at the network settling sexual harassment lawsuits.

A close look at former network star Megyn Kelly’s book, Settle For More, reveals her view that Fox’s internal company culture may be designed to carry water for harassers.

Speaking about former chief Roger Ailes, who Kelly accused of harassment (which was part of the reason he was shown the door), Kelly wrote that “the entire structure was set up to isolate and silence” accusers, and that those who did come forward previously “didn’t manage to effect any change.”

The explanation, while obviously just the opinion of the author, could go a long way toward explaining why Bill O’Reilly has retained his grip at the network while Fox News has spent millions of dollars to make his accusers disappear.

Mitch McConnell Says Americans Won’t Tolerate Democrats Blocking Supreme Court Nominations

McConnell’s admonition that the American public may not put up with prolonged Democratic obstruction is curious in light of his own plan to not lift a finger on any of Obama’s nominees ― a plan he shrewdly came up with on the day Justice Antonin Scalia died last February.

In the end, McConnell’s no-hearings-no-vote gamble paid off, and the Garland nomination died with the old Congress after 293 days — setting a modern record for Supreme Court nominees.

The only trump card Democrats in the Senate have now that they’re in the minority is the 60-vote threshold for moving forward with a vote on Supreme Court nominees. If they play hardball with McConnell, even that might go in this next Congress.

I think a more important news item was that Spain made a public statement (unnecessarily right now IMO, but never mind) that they wouldn’t veto EU membership for an independent Scotland, if it ever comes to that.

Yes, that is going to be a pisser when Scotland (and possibly Northern Ireland) vote to stay in the EU. And Gibraltar does not want to be left isolated on the periphery of Europe either, I can well guess.

re: #134 Clearly a Country For Sick Old Haters

Though Johnson would not name his White House contact and provided no evidence to back up the ostensible anti-Walsh collaboration, he insists that the White House orchestrated a sting operation to out Walsh as a source of leaks to major media organizations and that he was enlisted as an integral part of that effort.

He says the White House began feeding Walsh false information and then tasked Johnson with crawling the political web to document where that information turned up. The effort petered out, Johnson recalled, and he said he had not recently been in touch with the White House officials behind it.

Multiple Trump administration officials who spoke to The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity to talk freely acknowledge that though Walsh was viewed more suspiciously by a number of her colleagues (several of whom saw her as, however justified, a “leaky” staffer), Johnson’s story sounds far-fetched.

So, they had nothing, Rage Furby was “tasked” with finding whether any of the info showed up, and he failed to find anything.

Heh.

This sounds like Trump attempted to set up a canary trap, and failed. Whether they failed because they targeted the wrong person, or had the wrong person conducting the search isn’t clear. But it goes to show just how screwed things are in the WH when they’re trusting a guy with a track record of being wrong, lying about it, and a string of failures to do hatchet jobs to root out “leakers” from the Trump WH.

Purity ponies on parade. It’s not just a left thing.

Oh… I left out the key graf:

During the home stretch of the 2016 campaign, Johnson did his best to directly aid the Trump campaign. Still, senior veterans of the campaign and Trump presidential transition, as well as current White House officials, laugh off Johnson’s claims of direct collaboration as “ridiculous” and “nonsense,” saying “[he’s] living in his own world.” In October, Trump’s then campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told The Daily Beast that she had not spoken to Johnson.

In other words, the Admin officials are claiming that Johnson isn’t doing anything, let alone collaborating, and Rage Furby says that’s necessary part of the admin’s spin.

So I countered by saying: “So you’re saying Democrats conspired with Russians only to lose the election?”

His reply: “Yes! Because enough patriotic Americans voted for Trump to stop the Dem/Russia alliance from ruining this country!”

Patriots for what country?

These same fuckers have no problem waving the flag of insurrectionists and the secessionists who lost the Civil War (aka the War of Southern Insurrection). So it’s not entirely clear that they’re patriots for the United States. Their parroting of RT talking points and Trump-isms suggests that they’re rooting for Putin’s Russia, not the US. And ultimately manipulating US policy so that it hews to Putin’s view doesn’t help the US, and gives Russia a free hand to do as it likes in Europe.

Ask these right wingers why the GOP made their platform more Putin-friendly when Trump insisted. They have no answer for it, because it goes to intent.

So, as I understand it, the new ‘scandal’ is that Obama’s National Security Adviser asked for the unmasking of US Persons in the Trump Transition who were in contact with foreign government figures being surveilled, after the FBI had been investigating the Trump crew for 6 months already related to potentially colluding with a foreign adversary to seize power win the election? And that it was likely completely legal? And that it exposed a guy who was getting money from TWO foreign powers while working for Trump?

Let me take a few seconds to curse.

Rasenbrasenfrasen.

That dolt John Diefenbaker destroyed Canada’s aerospace industry with his decision to kill the Arrow. He not only killed the project, a plane that more than matched the Phantom, he destroyed everything connected to it. I think he would have had the people on the project shot as well if he could have.

Instead he bought F-101 Voodoos and nuclear armed CIM-10 Bomarcs. Neither of which was particularly good at its role. Plus nukes going off over Canada could not have been a good thing.

Now that I think of it, Diefenbaker was a lot like Trump. A showman who could talk to angry, white people and get them to vote for him. He was also rather incompetent at actually governing. Maybe the US lizards can look forward to Sukhois and MiGs being the main aircraft of the US Air Force.

Excuse me while I curse some more.

A good article up on TPM: Why Unified Republican Government Went Rapidly off the Rails

Cliff Stearns, a Republican who represented northern Florida for 12 terms in Congress, told TPM that much of the dysfunction today stems from the fact that Trump “lacks familiarity with how Congress works.” But so, too, do many of the congressional Republicans attempting to work with him. Seventy-seven percent of all Republicans in Congress have never served under a Republican president, and a full quarter of the House of Representatives has two years of congressional experience or less.

“None of these people were there when we had the markups for the Affordable Care Act,” said Stearns, who served on one of the key committees to craft the 2010 bill. “They weren’t there watching all the amendments we had and all of our differences of opinion. It would have been helpful to have that kind of experience.”

Inexperience aside, the growing public hostility between Trump and members of his own party has Hill veterans flummoxed. In particular, they point to Trump’s Twitter tirades against members of the Freedom Caucus—many of whom are more popular in their districts than the president, and largely immune to threats of a primary challenge.

“I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” said Stan Collender, a former top staffer on the House and Senate Budget Committees, who worked under both Republican and Democratic administrations. “He’s attacking a group he is desperately going to need in the future, and they’re probably the least politically vulnerable members of his party.”

Collender said Trump should have invested several months in getting to know the members of Congress that his legislative agenda depends on before twisting their arms for votes on an extremely unpopular Obamacare repeal bill and then publicly shaming them for not falling in line.

“He’s thinking of them as underlings and he’s the CEO,” he said. “But he’s not Congress’ CEO, he’s the president of the United States. They don’t work for him, they work for their constituents.”

Absofuckinglutely!

And apparently nobody talks to Nikki about anything. She says nobody at the UN is talking to her about Russia—much the way (before the killings in Charleston) she said nobody had ever mentioned the confederate flag.

Then (when she was running for re-election as governor:

“What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state. I can honesly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.”

Now:

on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Haley argued other countries look at the conversation around Russia’s potential involvement in the election as “D.C. chatter.”

Isn’t the administration removing penalties to parties that trade in conflict diamonds?

My bad, it’s a proposed executive order

The Trump administration has prepared a new executive order that would extinguish regulatory controls designed to prevent US companies profiting from and encouraging the spread of “conflict minerals” that are inflaming violence in Congo.

A draft executive order, composed last week and obtained by the Guardian, proposes a two-year suspension of a portion of the Dodd-Frank financial reforms that requires US firms to carry out due diligence to ensure that the products they sell include no minerals mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or neighbouring countries. The regulation was widely applauded as a mainstay of attempts to cut the umbilical chord between big business and violent warlords who have spread unrest throughout the Congo and caused the deaths of more than five million people since the 1990s.

Gabbard has the stench of useful idiot about her, and this would further suggest that Trump is pushing Putin’s policies, not ours.

Syria has been a shit show since the civil war erupted. Assad is awful, but any assistance to the rebels would aid IS. Attacking Assad means IS benefits. Attacking IS and the rebels aids Assad who has been repeatedly engaging in war crimes.

Russia backs Assad as a client state (hey, they gotta sell weapons to someone). Iran backs Assad too, though that support is frayed a bit because Hizbullah doesn’t particularly care to keep losing resources in a civil war when it could be better spending its time prepping for conflict with Israel (and any lessons learned in a Syrian civil war will benefit Hizbullah too). Iran can’t keep pouring resources into Syria either, not with oil prices being what it is.

But Rice’s multiple requests to learn the identities of Trump officials discussed in intelligence reports during the transition period does highlight a longstanding concern for civil liberties advocates about U.S. surveillance programs. The standard for senior officials to learn the names of U.S. persons incidentally collected is that it must have some foreign intelligence value, a standard that can apply to almost anything. This suggests Rice’s unmasking requests were likely within the law.

What’s so frustrating about it, is that it’s a demonstrably false narrative. And WTF is it with Dems that think PoC don’t count when we talk about the middle class?

For how much he loves Putin, he couldn’t come up with a better empathetic response than one that sounds like a patronizing crock of shit?

For fuck’s sake, most call centers provide more empathy to their customers than that fucking response by our “President”. Fucking Hell.

@mattmfm
There are now multiple cases in which Gorsuch apparently refused to even meet with Dem senators. GOP didn’t even try to get 60 votes.

So…they were planning to go nuclear all along? Or so utterly inflated with arrogance they figured Dems would capitulate regardless of how badly they behaved?

Goes back to how our society looks at any closing of a gap between being black and white. PoC can’t be the same type of middle and working class that whites are. Our society never will have large scale conversations about the issue of white absentee fathers, but will jump up and down on a dead horse if those absentee fathers are black.

You’d almost think that Russian banks are trying to buy Western politicians. (Makes me wonder if there is some digging to do in Dr. Jill Stein’s financials.)

I posted a suspicion about Stein already. Sure do remember Jill Shill partying with Flynn and Mr. P at the RT Party!
