More and more, I’m reminded that this country is fucking hard-wired for hard right thought, and any attempts to change that will just have you branded as the biggest liar in the history of ever, even if you manage to prove your position in triplicate. Because fuck you, this country is and forever will be conservative forever and anon, and if you’re anywhere to the left of LImbaugh, everything you say is immediately suspect and likely one of the most pernicious lies of all time.
On the other hand, if you’re anywhere remotely conservative and proclaim that the earth is flat, the sky is maroon, and all birds were descended from airplanes, and you get treated like a very serious person, have your ideas immediately given credence, and only discredited if you cause someone’s profit margins to dip.

I worked at a company that attempted to outsource programming to India to save the company (not just their bottom line, but the existence of the company). It didn’t work, because it was a small change in their costs. I worked at another company that had outsourced, and then decided it was cheaper to bring the employees here.
I do actually think these companies ought to be forced to pay all equivalent level employees the same amount wherever they come from (or whatever gender). I don’t think the way to solve the actual problem is to block H-1B. A better solution would be to fund public education. Then American employees wouldn’t actually have to cost as much. You either pay for it now, or you pay for it in the future.

I think I’m going to think of Spicer as “The Fog.”
Nothing he says is clear, everything is covered in a mist that makes definition of what is going on nearly impossible to see.
Meanwhile under the cover of The Fog, Trump and company go about doing stuff we may never have defined. They really like these conditions, they can do whatever they are doing without being truly seen and the spokesman for the administration comes out and fogs everything up over and over to cover the tracks and the facts.
What we need is some heat from the media and all of us to clear this shit up. Burn off the fog as it were.

Depeche Mode on going political:
Singer Dave Gahan, guitarist and keyboardist Martin Gore and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher last month released “Spirit”, featuring politically and socially-charged songs like “Where’s the Revolution”, first inspired in 2015 by the Syrian conflict.
“When Martin … wrote the songs a couple of years ago, he was sort of feeling that things weren’t going in the right direction,” Fletcher told Reuters.
“We don’t feel music can change things, really, but just to make people think a bit, look around the world and see what’s going on.”
And their reaction to Brexit:
At home, Brexit remains top of the agenda. Depeche Mode formed in Basildon, a town that voted to leave the European Union in last year’s referendum.
“I think it’s terrible … It could lead this country down completely the wrong path,” Fletcher said.
Gore said he was “completely depressed” the day after the vote: “I didn’t actually, really think it was going to happen…It doesn’t seem like it’s a very good idea to me at all … Let’s hope it’s going to somehow be OK for the UK.”

Not QUITE the same, since he was nominated to fill a vacancy that opened up in 1987.
But the thing is, McConnell has CREATED the precedent, but without any particular time limit, AND he didn’t come down hard enough, or at all, on those in his caucus who stated that a Clinton victory would cause them to leave the seat unfilled for her entire term.

IOW, presumably as soon as anyone starts campaigning, you could argue that the McConnell Rule precludes consideration of any nominee.
And Trump already filed for 2020.

When you upload an image, there’s a check box in the popup dialog after it’s uploaded that says “Meta Image.” Just check that box and you’ll see the image appear at the bottom right of the posting window. That’s also the image that appears when you tweet the link to your page, or post it to Facebook.

Well I just went on an embarrassing tweet rampage about Twitter making me follow POTUS & FLOTUS involuntarily. Turns out I probably was following the official accounts during Obama and when the halfwits moved in they took over the accounts…hence the follows. This is why I rarely post and am happy mostly to retweet others who don’t go off half-cocked like I apparently do.
I only do that in person, lately. I’m trying to figure out the ‘in person’ version of rarely posting. I think I’d have to keep the front door locked. That doesn’t work so well in retail.

McConnell knows exactly what he’s doing. No amount of goading will stop him, because his operating premise is to get a permanent conservative majority, by any means necessary.
Hypocrisy will never stick, nor any other accusation of self-contradiction. They’ve sold themselves the idea they’re the True Americans, and can justify anything with that assumption. There’s no real value system, just affiliation.

I know: I used to live in a house with an old-fashioned claw-foot bathtub with a curved rim. One of our cats (a little black Persian) would always (and only when there was someone in the tub) jump up on the rim, and pace from one end to the other: carefully turning around right at the faucets. Not something to reassure the nervous bather (he had, for a small cat, quite large and sharp claws)….

Civilian flamethrowers are quite a thing on gun websites:
So they now have a flamethrower on Demolition Ranch (VIDEO)
[Embedded content]I don’t see a home defense application though.
This South African anti-carjacking invention won an Ig-Nobel Peace prize in 1999:
The Blaster was a liquefied petroleum gas flamethrower installed along the sides of the vehicle under the doors. Should a group of carjackers suddenly attack the vehicle while it is stopped in traffic (the typical scenario), the occupant could flip a switch and direct 5 metre plumes of flame upward into the facial area of anyone trying to enter the vehicle through the doors or windows. (Inventor) Fourie claims it is unlikely to kill but would “definitely blind” the assailant. In South Africa, it is legal to use lethal force in self-defence if in fear of one’s life, and ownership of flamethrowers is unrestricted.
The device was controversial in South Africa, with some (including the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA)) speculating that the device might cause more carjackers to simply murder drivers with gunfire as a precautionary measure before approaching the vehicle, a tactic which was already fairly common.
Not to mention that it might prove useful against traffic police and, more understandably, squeegee guys.

These people are big on being “chosen.” It’s why they think business owners and successful preachers should have a different standard of personal conduct from lesser folk. Otoh, a poor kid who is a National Merit Scholar was chosen by Satan and the New World Order, since he or she is all too likely to undermine the system of hereditary privilege that keeps hinterland America profitable.

Good to hear.
I was afraid that it was going to ruin the series for me. Though I will say that the trailers I’ve seen were of iconic scenes from the original movie so I had hope.
I assumed that the bad press was being caused by groups not happy that the main character was being played by a white woman (though lets be honest - if you could find a real life person with the same visual aspects of the drawn character - which Scarlet does - then I would have chosen her as well - along with acting ability).
re: #63 piratedan
in a way, have to admire the base hubris of the GOP… I mean, they used their racism, covert and some rather obtusely presented in order to fuck over a Black Man that won the electoral and popular vote to thwart his legislative agenda at any and every opportunity. Nothing was too small or picayune to let pass. No crisis that couldn’t be perverted and turned into partisan fodder.
Now for them to wonder why the Dems are taking some of those tactics and returning them back unto them and for them to cry foul really brings hypocrisy to a new level. There are oftentimes that I am thankful we live in a polite society and not simply by mob rule, although the idea of a few of these fuckers with their heads on pikes does have a certain appeal to it.

IMPORTANT: From our fellow travelers over at Balloon Juice…….
Key snippet:
Here’s an important question: who ordered Cohen-Watnick, a junior DIA analyst promoted to a senior directorship on the National Security Staff by former National Security Advisor LTG Flynn way above his level of expertise and experience, to conduct this review? Was it LTG Flynn before he was fired on 13 February 2017? Was it the now reassigned KT McFarland? Was it someone above Cohen-Watnick in the Administration chain of command? This is an important question that needs to be answered! Unless Cohen-Watnick had a need to know this - as in was ordered to conduct such a review - as part of his duties as the NSC’s Senior Director for Intelligence Policy, his accessing of this material is a violation of classification and compartmentalization protocols. As is his dissemination of such information.
Also:
Rothman is referring to this Medium post from yesterday, 2 APR 2017, by Mike Cernovich. It now appears that Cernovich’s claims that he, at least, and other prominent members of the alt-right have ongoing contacts with senior White House/Administration officials. What Rothman is reporting, that, at least, Cernovich’s ties are accurate, this is important news. It shows that the white nationalist/white supremacist/neo-NAZI community that goes by the more respectable name the alt-right actually has a solid connection to the new Administration. This is disturbing on many levels. Not least is where the flow of information went: Cernovich, Zero Hedge, InfoWars, Gateway Pundit.

And that was the shot….Here’s the chaser:
Emptywheel: Who Violated Their Designated Role: Ezra Cohen-Watnick or Susan Rice?
In the original version of the latest right wing claim — that Susan Rice requested that multiple incoming Trump figures’ names be unmasked in intercepts — Mike Cernovich describes the genesis of Devin Nunes’ concern this way:
The White House Counsel’s office identified Rice as the person responsible for the unmasking after examining Rice’s document log requests. The reports Rice requested to see are kept under tightly-controlled conditions. Each person must log her name before being granted access to them.
Upon learning of Rice’s actions, H. R. McMaster dispatched his close aide Derek Harvey to Capitol Hill to brief Chairman Nunes.
But as Eli Lake — fresh off having apologized for letting Devin Nunes use him — tells the story, close Mike Flynn associate Ezra Cohen-Watnick discovered it and brought the discovery to the White House Counsel’s office, whereupon he was told to “end his own research” on unmasking.
The pattern of Rice’s requests was discovered in a National Security Council review of the government’s policy on “unmasking” the identities of individuals in the U.S. who are not targets of electronic eavesdropping, but whose communications are collected incidentally. Normally those names are redacted from summaries of monitored conversations and appear in reports as something like “U.S. Person One.”
The National Security Council’s senior director for intelligence, Ezra Cohen-Watnick, was conducting the review, according to two U.S. officials who spoke with Bloomberg View on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. In February Cohen-Watnick discovered Rice’s multiple requests to unmask U.S. persons in intelligence reports that related to Trump transition activities. He brought this to the attention of the White House General Counsel’s office, who reviewed more of Rice’s requests and instructed him to end his own research into the unmasking policy.
This repeats a claim Lake had made in his earlier apology post, which he presented as one detail in the NYT version of this story that was not accurate.
Another U.S. official familiar with the affair told me that one of the sources named in the article, former Defense Intelligence officer Ezra Cohen-Watnick, did not play a role in getting information to Nunes. This official said Cohen-Watnick had come upon the reports while working on a review of recent Justice Department rules that made it easier for intelligence officials to share the identities of U.S. persons swept up in surveillance. He turned them over to White House lawyers.
But it adds the detail that Cohen-Watnick had been told to stand down. That would explain why Lake and others would want to claim that Cohen-Watnick wasn’t involved in dealing all this to Nunes: because he had already been told not to pursue it further. If the multiple accounts saying he was involved in the hand-off to Nunes, it appears he did.
The WaPo’s version of this included a detail not included by the right wingers: that Cohen-Watnick went to John Eisenberg, not Don McGahn, with his “discovery.” Eisenberg is significantly responsible, dating back to when he was at DOJ, for ensuring that ordinary Americans would be sucked up in surveillance under PRISM. For him to be concerned about the legal unmasking of Americans’ identities (to the extent that did exist — and the record is still unclear whether it did) is laughable.
The timing of Cohen-Watnick’s research — dating back to February — intersects in interesting ways with the timeline in this March 14 Politico story of H.R. McMaster’s attempt to sideline him, which was overruled by Steven Bannon.

Page confirmed to BuzzFeed News on Monday that he is “Male-1” in the court filing, and said he had been in contact with Podobnyy, who was working at the time at Moscow’s UN office in New York City under diplomatic cover, although he was really an SVR agent. It’s about time for this simple bit of truth telling. Nothing upsets the media and both-siderists more than liberal Truth-telling:
“bitter clingers” and “deplorables” being two recent examples.
FFS, you can scientifically prove that the GOP doesn’t give a shit about people.
Washington may be shaking its head, but Devin Nunes is still a hometown hero

The Trumpcare/Ryancare = #GOPDontCare about anything except tax cuts for the rich.
The bill failed, not because it was too extreme, but because the GOP didn’t think it went far enough.
Not enough people losing health coverage.
Too much safety net programs remaining.
Too much money going to someone who isn’t rich.
That’s your proof right there. The GOP dropped the veneer of compassionate conservatism and showed everyone that the only thing they care about is gutting govt funding so the rich can get more of everything while everyone else fights over the reduced scraps.

Rural central California is a different place, though, from the urban areas (and the resort areas.)
But as throwback as they can be, and as crypto-racist (think VDH) they may be, the reality of the economics is that they depend upon cheap migrant labor for the industry of agriculture.
Down here I try to buy some produce from the local farmers, and I think that is a dying industry because the water costs are going to kill them if the loss of cheap does not.
2 new employees filling out paperwork among dead in St. Louis boiler explosion https://t.co/3Lg7nkzJ8v pic.twitter.com/o8yXTwqQ9V

ST. LOUIS • Three brand-new hires at a south St. Louis linen laundering company were filling out paperwork in the office Monday morning when a boiler launched by an explosion at a nearby factory crashed through the roof, killing two of them and critically injuring the third.
The initial explosion about 7:30 a.m. killed one person at Loy-Lange Box Co. at 222 Russell Boulevard and shot the boiler into the air. It flew about 500 feet before crashing into the offices at Faultless Healthcare Linens at Russell and South Broadway.
“You just can’t believe the size of this tank that landed in the office,” said Mark Spence, the chief operating officer of Faultless who confirmed it was two new employees that were killed. “It’s just enormous. It’s emotionally overwhelming just to think what these poor people experienced.”
A total of four people were injured at the two structures. At least two were in critical condition. One of them was a person trapped in the Faultless office underneath the boiler, a metal cylinder at least 10-12 feet long and 3-3.5 feet in diameter, according to St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson. It weighed a ton or more, the chief said.
The St. Louis Fire Department’s Collapse Rescue Task Force was able to free that victim from under the boiler, Jenkerson said. The boiler was still hot when he arrived about 15 minutes after the initial call.

That right there was why Trump ducked the Opening Day tradition of throwing out the first pitch.
Not because he had some conflict.

Of course, he’d then take to twitter and claim that they were all bused in and paid to boo.

If my Facebook wall is any representative peak into the American society, it is pretty clear that the die-hard Trumpers just are not going to accept the reality of Trump.
There are non-Trumper Republican types who are basically in-hiding or otherwise avoiding wanting to engage anything Trump. These folk will probably never vote for a Democrat, but they are not going to go out on a limb for Trump.
Yet the diehard Trumpers remain. They’re such easy marks. Showing up in my wall today is some trash from Shoebat… and of course some posts praising Ben Carson.
These marks are not going to allow themselves any room to be shown how many falsehoods they’ve swallowed. They are deep into their hyper-religiosity and are beyond the point of change.

Also, off the top of my head, there were two records that I knew that sampled the Adhaan. One was a progressive house tune from 2000 and another was a dark techno tune released in 1990.
And I think there were a few records by the late British producer Muslimgauze that sampled the adhaan as well, if I recall correctly.
President Trump pulls back Obama-era protections for women in the workplace https://t.co/Ai2jBv9QVg pic.twitter.com/847sm5QCVE
— NBC News (@NBCNews) April 3, 2017
With little notice, President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that advocates say rolls back hard-fought victories for women in the workplace.
Tuesday’s “Equal Pay Day” — which highlights the wage disparity between men and women — is the perfect time to draw more attention to the president’s action, activists say.
On March 27, Trump revoked the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order then-President Barack Obama put in place to ensure that companies with federal contracts comply with 14 labor and civil rights laws. The Fair Pay order was put in place after a 2010 Government Accountability Office investigation showed that companies with rampant violations were being awarded millions in federal contracts.
In an attempt to keep the worst violators from receiving taxpayer dollars, the Fair Pay order included two rules that impacted women workers: paycheck transparency and a ban on forced arbitration clauses for sexual harassment, sexual assault or discrimination claims.

Could you have 5-party talks with China, the US, Japan, North and South Korea to ratchet things down? I suspect it’s possible, but not with Twitler running the show here! China has already shut off coal supplies to North Korea, and they could even chance a regime change, but there’s a real risk of that going badly and having a massive refugee problem at their border, which they definitely do not want.
And with both the Juche grandson and Toddler Trump with access to nukes, all bets are off.

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Rescuers in Southern California have saved a dog that fell into a 30-foot well.
Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Brian Jordan tells news station KNBC-TV that a 13-year-old Welsh terrier named Lucy fell into the dirt well in the Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu on Sunday.
The department’s urban search-and-rescue team lowered a firefighter into the well to grab the dog, which wasn’t hurt in the fall.
Video posted by the department shows the firefighter and the dog being lifted out of the well by a rope. The department also shared a picture afterward of the healthy-looking dog.
Firefighters urge pet owners to keep their pets on a leash during hikes through the mountains.
