Video: Watch Susan Rice Destroy the Right Wing Nonsense About “Unmasking”

The Right Wing Parrots’ Unison Chorus is yelling again
Politics • Views: 38,347

MSNBC

The entire right wing universe is shrieking in unison again: BREAKING BLOCKBUSTER BOMBSHELL BREAKING NEWS about one of their primary boogie-women, Susan Rice.

All kinds of wild and unsubstantiated accusations are being thrown around the right wing blogs, because that’s what they do. But here’s Susan Rice herself on NBC News, explaining the methods and processes that really determine the “unmasking” of US citizens mentioned in intelligence reports.

It’s really rather simple to understand; if an intelligence report mentions a US citizen, their name is typically redacted. But sometimes it’s necessary to know who the person is, in order to assess the significance of the report. When that happens, the official reviewing the report makes a request to the intelligence community to reveal that name. At every step, established procedures are followed. And “unmasking” is absolutely not the same as “leaking,” despite the right wing’s frantic attempts to equate the two concepts.

Bottom line: all the shrieking and exaggerations and false claims coming from the Right Wing Parrots’ Unison Chorus amount to nothing more than an attempt to take the focus off the Trump gang’s ever-widening Russia problem, and we all need to hold the media accountable if they start chasing this story at the bidding of the dishonest right and Donald Trump, like dogs chasing cars they’ll never catch.

There’s not many Republicans I respect still left but Rick and his fellow Floridan, Ana Navarro are two of them. Reason is simple. They’ve been consistently anti-Trump.

There’s obviously no actual malfeasance here. Rice was doing her job, looking into the actions of a hostile foreign power who was interfering with our elections. The fact that agents of this foreign power kept getting recorded talking to Trump people doesn’t exonerate Trump. Will the media pretend this isn’t obvious in order to “both sides” the #TrumpRussia scandal?

Why are the right wingers hanging their hat on to this?

Because everywhere else you look Trump’ failing bigly.

Polling? His ratings are cratering (again):

He’s acquiesced to Putin over how to deal with Syria - all while blaming Obama for the failures. Trump signaled that Assad could remain in power, and Assad responded by going after threats to the Assad regime with chemical weapons, and Trump’s all like - *shrug* (if you can get a response out of US officials; Tillerson avoided the issue entirely).

But the real issue is that every day brings a new connection between Trump’s people and Russians. Not just Russians, but Russian spies and people close to Putin. Right wingers are busy trying to throw fecal matter into the air hoping it’ll stick to people challenging this corrupt administration, and Rice is the current target, because she did her job.

Trump’s people repeatedly got caught communicating with Russians who were under surveillance. But that’s not the sketchy part - it’s when Trump people lie about having no contacts, and the surveillance says otherwise.

It’s when Trump people lie under oath.
It’s when they lie on their security clearance forms.

It’s when they obfuscate and misdirect and obstruct ongoing investigations. It’s the obfuscation, misdirection, and obstruction that are criminal acts and worrisome, not that Rice did her job within the letter of the law.

Because they haven’t lost anything yet by doing it. If Price’s old seat goes Democratic, they’ll turn on Trump. If not, and we can take either the House or Senate next year (and yes, I know the odds), then they’ll turn on Trump.

Until then, all we can do is make things uncomfortable by making lots of phone calls noise.

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo told viewers on Tuesday that the controversy surrounding former national security adviser Susan Rice is “another fake scandal being peddled by right-wing media.”

Cuomo offered the remarks about Rice’s reported request to know the identities of President Trump transition team members mentioned in intelligence briefings during CNN’s “New Day.”

I people thinking are jumping too far with the “distraction” bit.

What’s happening is that they’re controlling the narrative: they don’t want the focus on what incidental collection means, et cetera, so they’re repeating over and over a claim that DARVOs the situation. Because repetition will make it true (to enough people), and uncertain to more people.

Who ordered the CODE RED?!

They’re hoping someone’s going to name Obama.

Reality is that Trump’s people keep turning up having contacts with Russians and keep lying about it. That’s the suspicious activity. That’s what the Trump admin is spewing baffling BS about. They want it to be about something other than themselves.

They’re projecting.

They’re projecting all the malfeasance and criminality they do on to their enemies.

It’s standard playbook from Trump.

There’s never going to be “enough” safety from trans people for these folks.

People that are different than them w/r/t sexuality, gender identity…and, ultimately, gender norms and performance of masculinity/femininity…are threats just by existing.

Which is why they’re willing to create mores and laws that hinge on subjective impressions—manly/womanly—and invade the privacy of anybody that might read as not-properly-a-woman, not-properly-a-man. That someone not-normal, even if they are not TS/TV—is inconvenienced is added value.

That’s what makes this whole thing so freaking ridiculous. If I was in a public restroom and a trans woman came in, I wouldn’t even know it or care. Without nad checkers at every entrance neither would anyone else.

What deeply concerns me is teenage trans young women being forced into teenage boy locker rooms. This is serious abuse and suicide territory. Unconscionable.

That is what worries me the most. The really angering thing is once again conservatives are criminalizing the people most likely to be victims. It’s dangerous what they’re doing. And honestly, it pisses me off that it took the NCAA potentially taking away NC’s basketball tournament to get many businesses to realize how fucked up this is. See transgendered people as fellow human beings. You don’t have to understand why they’re not comfortable in the gender tehy were born but you need to acknowledge that they are entitled to the same rights and respect you are.

How would you even know if a woman is trans or cis? Wingnuts seem to think that every trans woman is a hairy bearded guy in a dress. Um, no.

Straight up: they don’t care if this bill hits cis women.

Built into this trans-panic is a more subtle ugliness about the borders of gender, and the treatment of women as objects with value only relative to their assessment by men.

If a woman gets dinged with “looks/dresses/acts like a man” and is subject to harassment, or inconvenience, or privacy violation: that’s not really a problem, because she’s non-normative relative to their super narrow standard, and thus deserves the unease she feels.

Even more deeply, this ties into the larger idea of masculinity as “protective” and “femininity” as accepting of that “protectiveness” because women should defer, should not assert themselves. So you’re supposed to be grateful that this bill—and every fucko hovering at the WC door playing bouncer, and every asswipe making a public scene because they’re uncomfortable with a stranger.

One group was violently suppressed in several states (here in NC, the Chapel Hill police came in with submachine guns and started beating everybody, including the press). The other was handled with kid gloves.

Trump attacks Obama over Assad gassing Syrian citizens. Blames Obama for not acting when Trump himself was calling on Obama not to act. Then Trump has audacity to bring up Obama’s red lines. Gassing is a clear sign of crossing a red line, and now Trump’s the one in charge and has to make a decision on what to do.

My guess is that Trump does whatever Putin says for him to do.

If Trump goes to Congress for an AUMF or declaration of war for anything less than Pearl Harbor v2.0, Democrats should vote no. re: #3 HappyWarrior

There’s not many Republicans I respect still left but Rick and his fellow Floridan, Ana Navarro are two of them. Reason is simple. They’ve been consistently anti-Trump.

And how many times did these wonderful Republicans vote for people like George Bush or support fellow party members who voted umpteen times to repeal the ACA?

How many times did they look the other way while the collection of bigots and religious fanatics masquerading as a political party moved to make life tougher for poor people and minorities?

One thing you usually discover about “principled” anti-Trump Republicans is that they’ve had no fucking problem endorsing some of the most regressive, radical GOP policies on record.

But since they’ve had their broken clock moment, we’re supposed to give them a hug.

My assumption is that unilaterally lifting the US sanctions that are blocking that deal, as Putin, Bannon, Trump and Tillerson all want to do, is politically impossible at the moment.

After all, even the most brain-dead members of the mainstream media might actually get a clue on Trump-Russia connections if the sanctions are lifted for no good reason to let the enormous Exxon deal go through.

If you click “See More” on the embedded facebook post, Geier makes another thought-provoking point:

I welcome this development. When the decency police on the right shriek in horror at this kind of thing, the rejoinder is obvious: Dudez, you delicate little flowers elected *Donald Trump* as your commander-in-chief. You can go fuck yourselves with your “decency.”

It’s been said of Hillary Clinton that, in private, she curses a blue streak. That’s one of the things I liked about her. If a tape had been “accidentally” leaked of her swearing like sailor, I bet it would have won her some votes. It would have humanized her.

Of course, the decency police/both-siderist media would have had the vapors, but I daresay they’re becoming increasingly irrelevant in the social-media-driven world. And when you come right down to it, who gives a fuck about tone? :D Trump’s vulgarity per sae wasn’t the issue, it was the underlying sexism/racism.

Other GOPers make it abundantly clear that you can deliver the most vicious, destructive hate speech and policies in a perfectly polite and “civil” tone.

I think of it this way: Wilson, Frum, and others are genuine Principled Conservatives, who care more about their country than their party. That, I can respect.

The thing is, their principles are stupid, and the policies they’d enact are bad.

During WWII, we allied with Stalin against Hitler. Didn’t make him our buddy.

Correct. I understand what Matt’s saying. I just I do respect that they’ve stayed anti-Trump throughout and not going Pro-Trump as a means of conveience since he’s won the nomination and now GE.

Written by Simone’s bass player Gene Taylor after the news of Martin Luther King’s death (4 April 1968) had reached him. Nina performed it at Westbury Music Fair in New York, three days after his murder. Nina’s performance was recorded on the live album ‘Nuff Said, which later received an Emmy nomination.

We learned that song that day. We didn’t have a chance to have two or three days of rehearsal. But when you’re feeling compassion and outrage and wanting to express what you know the world is feeling, we did it because that’s what we felt.

A temporary alliance with these types may be useful (e.g., to get Trump impeached and convicted), but real party-building is an entirely separate affair. The same goes for the Bernie-or-busters — they can’t be allowed to set the overall (D) agenda because their vision is clearly inadequate to that task.

Sorry. I’ve got leg/back issues that are preventing me from working, so I’m in a foul mood to begin with. But what sort of triggered me on those posts was an article on philly.com that checks in with a hardcore Trump county in northern PA.

I had seen the article’s title, “Is the Trump thrill gone in Potter County”, and I immediately avoided clicking on it. Mainly because I had a sense the article would be chock-full of people insisting, Kevin Bacon in Animal House style, that Trump was on the right track. Because they’re Trump supporters; a liberal says water is wet, and you instinctively say that’s fake news regardless of evidence.

Anyways, the Inquirer handed out free Sunday editions this week as an incentive to subscribe. Lo and behold, right there on the front page was the article I’d been avoiding all week. As I was dumping the paper in recycling, this gem of a quote caught my eye:

“Can’t these idiots work together?” Domaleski, 72, an Army veteran and former Adelphia Cable employee, asked last week from behind his dark aviator sunglasses. He said he still supports Trump - still has the sign on his Coudersport lawn - but is also “totally disgusted with both parties because I happen to be an American.”

“It’s about time these Democrats and these Republicans try to meet halfway in the stream,” Domaleski said.

So, yeah, I’m not going to be in a forgiving mood towards Republicans or Trump voters anytime soon.

Yeah no kidding. I really hate this element of the left that feels the need to defend Putin because they hate the intelligence apparatus.

198
goddamnedfrank  Apr 4, 2017 • 2:03:46pm

It’s really rather simple to understand; if an intelligence report mentions a US citizen, their name is typically redacted. But sometimes it’s necessary to know who the person is, in order to assess the significance of the report. When that happens, the official reviewing the report makes a request to the intelligence community to reveal that name. At every step, established procedures are followed. And “unmasking” is absolutely not the same as “leaking,” despite the right wing’s frantic attempts to equate the two concepts.

Also, like I pointed out yesterday, it would’ve been impossible for Rice to be “targeting” Trump officials for unmasking because, by fucking definition, she couldn’t have known who they goddamned were before asking to seek their names.

Leaking: The illegal disclosure of classified material
Unmasking: The legal disclosure of redacted material to a select group based on need

Putin is what he is — an authoritarian ruler trying to bring back Greater Russia as world events permit. It is to be expected that Putin would meddle in US elections to benefit his goals, and I have no problem with anything the Russians did that was legal under US law. There is nothing illegal about US organizations, political parties and voters being influenced by Russian propaganda. The fault for this part of the train wreck is entirely on those stupid enough to fall for that propaganda.

However, the facts should be brought to light, because it will be very educational to see just how thoroughly compromised Trump and the Republicans have become in their quest for victory at all costs. Also, the Trump campaign almost certainly committed a few crimes along the way.

Agents seized 500 guns and 100,000 rounds of ammo from a family. They got them back.

The weapons were confiscated by state DOJ agents acting on information that Albert Sheakalee was barred from owning guns because he was in the state’s Armed Prohibited Persons (APPS) database.

However, his attorney, Mark Coleman of Fresno, argued that Sheakalee did not know that he was in the database. Coleman said the justice department broke a promise to Sheakalee to keep the raid confidential until a court hearing determined whether he was mentally fit to own guns.

So, to put the whole Rice/unmasking thing in perspective, here’s what Trump tweeted a month ago, the Saturday morning after his beautiful speech got knocked out of the news by the discovery that the new Attorney General had lied to Congress:

Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory

Okay. So the current story is that Rice asked for the unmasking of USPs in intel reports covering intercepts of foreign targets, during the transition, some of whom were Trump associates/transition workers.

Please tell me how that in any way supports Trump’s tweet. Talk about your moving goalposts!
