Disturbing News of the Day: US Strategic Command Links to Breitbart “News”

Nightmare fuel
WTF • Views: 54,543

Among other duties, the Department of Defense’s United States Strategic Command is in charge of the US nuclear arsenal, and is tasked with defending America against nuclear attacks. It was established in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush, to replace the outdated Strategic Air Command.

And now, in the Trump era, their Twitter account is actually tweeting links to Breitbart “News,” the favorite website of neo-Nazis and white supremacists throughout the world, whose former CEO, Stephen Bannon, is now Donald Trump’s closest adviser.

The article they’re linking to is an account of an interview with Air Force Gen. John Hyten, and although there’s nothing especially distasteful about this particular piece, Breitbart is well-known as a vile sewer of the most extreme hate speech, trafficking in racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, and every other nasty trait of today’s far right.

The point about this interview with Gen. Hyten is that it’s available from many other sources — but whoever is running the Strategic Command Twitter account decided to recommend to their ~60,000 followers that they read it at Breitbart.

Every day something more disturbing comes from the Trump Horror, but this may be the worst yet. The people in charge of our world-destroying nuclear arsenal are getting their information from (and recommending to others) one of the ugliest far right websites on the internet.

The thing that will save the us from our Breitbart-inspired generals is that the military, despite its authoritarian structure, is is highly dependent on competent technicians to execute orders. And a lot of those people are smart and are not about to blindly follow directives that lead their country down the tube.

That said, this pretty much solidifies that this country will remain a repressively conservative one to its core for a generation more, if not two. I look forward to the continued death of liberalism and sanity by 5-4 decisions…

It’s like the thing I used to hear from wingnuts when they got caught believing obviously satirical stories about Obama or Bill Clinton: “But what does it say about THEM, that we can so easily believe this?”

Yeah, I edited my post after I saw the link to the “creator.” Still for Frum to use it to make a point is still fucked up.

I think he used it correctly the first time, as in ‘Imagine what the GOP would have done’, but then when he said, ‘yeah, we CAN imagine this!’, that’s where he went off the rails into crazy bullshit land.

I mean, Sidney Blumenthal? Okay, so the SecState emails show a fair amount of Blumenthal giving advice, but, you know, we can look at the record and note that she rarely took any of it.

And the idea that she wouldn’t have already filled the cabinet and all the subcabinet positions? Or at least nominated folks for them? Shit, I bet they had the plan for staffing the whole Administration in place before the Convention.

Trump is where he is, because he’s stupid, and lazy, and doesn’t trust but a few people. Clinton is the opposite - smart, hardworking, and knows ‘binders full’ of competent people.

The ‘but we CAN imagine it’ bullshit, again, says absolutely nothing about Clinton, and everything about Frum.

Not really. You’re going to need majorities in both Houses, and then you’re going to need the wherewithal to eliminate the filibuster for legislative matters, as changing the size of the Supreme Court will require amending the judiciary act.

That said, there may be legitimate reasons for increasing the size of the Court. We’ve been at 9 Justices since 1866 (from 1863 to 1866, there were 10 justices, but Congress changed the law to prevent Johnson from getting an appointment). There’s something to be said, actually, of going to 13 Justices, one for each Circuit.

Of course in this era of polarization, as soon as one side increases the number of SCOTUS justices with the presidency and control of Congress, that will become as routine as accepting the resignations of US attorneys.

I kind of want to create a Super PAC with the goal of challenging every member of congress, both primary and general, with candidates under 50. Call it a Gen-X SuperPAC, our motto: F you Boomers, and F you Millennials too.

re: #69 Mattand

That’s ultimately what was so frustrating about Kurt/DF. He knew supporting Trump was wrong. He fucking knew it when voted and he knows it now.

I just don’t get how people can function like this. It’s not rational. It’s why all these Trumpgrets people are fucking killing me. There was not a single shred of evidence that Trump has ever given a shit about working people, and now these idiots are like “OMG who knew he would do this stuff?”

You can’t have a viable democracy when much of the populace refuses to think critically and acknowledge reality.

Part of it is that DF is Team R all the way, so he can convince himself that anyone on Team R isn’t as bad as everyone says. And Team D is the rival of Team R, so anyone on Team D is obviously worse than what everyone says. It’s sort of a sports fan approach to politics (sadly, I have this in my family - for them, no mater what Team R = Good; Team D = Bad).

You see it when a guy gets traded or signs with a rival sports team. Boston fans hate guy playing for the Yankees, then he signs with the Red Sox and suddenly they love him (or vice versa).

I don’t know how you undo that kind of thinking. And I always figure there’s going to be some level of this (yes, on both sides), but it seems to have hit a critical mass in recent years and left no room for rational thought, particularly on the right.

But now, he’s posting these things to ingratiate himself with the worst people out there.

It reminds me of the scene in ‘A Man For All Seasons’, when Richard Rich perjures himself to convict Thomas More of treason, and More asks what badge of office it is that Rich is wearing. On being informed that Rich is now Attorney General for Wales, More says:

“Why Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world… but for Wales!”

So, “Why Dark, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world… but for wingnuts?!?”

Trump’s signed more into law than Obama at this point, but let’s talk about content of what was signed.

Obama signed the ARRA of 2009, which was a bailout, assistance for the states, stimulus package, tax cuts, and other measures to keep the economy afloat during the Great Recession, etc.

Trump? He gutted environmental protections, workplace rules, and attempted to gut Obamacare. Yeah, they’re on par with each other. Oh, and Trump gutted internet privacy rules that Obama enacted.

The HUD budget is roughly $40-$60 billion depending on the year and program adjustments. So, the $500 billion as a total budget makes sense.

But those amounts are so far off as not to be believable, and the HUD IG’s office hasn’t officially released any audit results. So, I’m not buying anything they’re claiming about the HUD budget.

Blind Frog found the audit results, and they were in place before Carson had the job.

The other thing? This auditing process dates back before the election, and certainly long before Carson was sworn in, or even nominated. Carson didn’t ‘order an audit’ and Carson didn’t find shit. Thanks for locating this document, and most of the issues arise out of fact that HUD wasn’t using GAAP and the amounts relate to restating obligations, debts, and trying to correct for deficiencies in accounting, not that there’s billions missing (we can figure out where the money went - but not expressed correctly under GAAP rules).

The GOP getting rid of the filibuster for SCOTUS nominees isn’t a big deal IMO. It’s just another example of Republicans being the scum that they are, putting their power and profit above all else.

I’m just glad the Democrats had enough spine to make things turn out this way, as opposed to a preemptive surrender that lets the GOP do as they please while retaining the filibuster (exclusively for use by the GOP).

I’m heading for Redwood City. It shouldn’t be particularly busy, but I’m not in the mood for going any farther than our local grocery store shopping. I need to, because I need a couple things the local grocer doesn’t carry, so I’ll stop at Safeway and (sigh) Costco too.

The other thing? This auditing process dates back before the election, and certainly long before Carson was sworn in, or even nominated. Carson didn’t ‘order an audit’ and Carson didn’t find shit. The OIG was already doing it, and already knew in November of 2016 that there were lots of accounting errors.

Of course, on the Right, this is depicted as “Carson finds half a TRILLION dollars of FRAUD!!!”

Also, from the restated financial statements:

These inconsistencies resulted in a gross adjustment of $262,662 million for FY 2015 in the presentation of the notes and schedules and did not impact the financial statements. Overall, the combined adjustments to the financial statements resulted in a net adjustment of $3 million, but no change in HUD’s financial position or impact to our programs. In other words, while the presentation of the financial information was inaccurate, the correction of these inaccuracies did not represent a change in cash balances or any improper payments, or misallocation of HUD resources.

How does the 1st Amendment not win in this scenario. In this case the government is the entity attempting to stop speech from an individual using a corporate medium. I am not too certain that Trump’s normal lawyers (read: hacks who sue/scam everyday people for their kingpin Drumpf) understand that this attack by him would be deemed improper (at least in my understanding of the 1st Amendment).

Oh my!
Voodoo Doughnut Won’t Have Eating Contests for Awhile After Man Chokes to Death During One

Oregon staple Voodoo Doughnut has suspended its eating contests after a man died while attempting to eat a half-pound donut at their Denver location early Sunday morning.

Witnesses say that Travis Malouff, 42, was attempting the doughnut challenge when he began to choke. By the time authorities arrived around 1:15 a.m., Malouff had died of asphyxia, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Dead is dead of course, but a half pound donut does not seem especially challenging or lethal compared to some of the things featured in eating contests. As recorded in LGF pages a few years ago, one poor chap died after winning a ROACH eating contest. A commenter on the original article won the internet that day by saying that the winner had bugged out (a witticism that I immediately stole).

We really don’t know enough about the situation. The government’s position could be that the account was making death threats and Twitter’s position could be that the threats weren’t explicit enough for them to simply hand over the user id.

All I’m saying is that what is and is not perceived as a threat isn’t always cut and dry. Someone in the Secret Service could be overreacting, or they could be piecing together other bits of information that put the account’s activities in a new light that Twitter isn’t privy to.

In this analysis everyone could be doing exactly what they’re supposed to, Twitter is defending itself and its user base against what it sees as poorly explained government overreach while at the same time the Secret Service could be acting on what it genuinely perceives as a threat while feeling it can’t explain everything to Twitter without exposing its own sources and methods.

In other words, we don’t know enough to really make a judgement either way.

The Nation, the magazine best known for having significant trouble arriving in your mailbox in one piece, has a somewhat ridiculous take on Rachel Maddow’s extensive coverage of the Trump/Russia ties:

As many others have pointed out, an obsessive focus on Putin absolves the Democratic Party from having to reckon with their own failings, as if it was Moscow that tricked Hillary Clinton to not campaign in Wisconsin, or to spend the whole month of August (after Bernie Sanders’s gracious call on his supporters to back her campaign) courting neocons.

Yes, Rachel should shift her focus to the awfulness of Hillary and the graciousness of Bernie!

First, Trump in JULY asked Russia to hack/steal Clintons SecState emails and publish them. Sure, ‘jokingly’, but it was a joke he repeated, and he sure didn’t seem to be laughing.

Second, Russian puppet Wikileaks dumps DNC emails talking smack about Bernie, right before the Convention.

Third, Trump spends October pushing Wikileaks email dumps.

Fourth, it’s possible to do more than one thing at a time.

Fifth, GRACIOUS?!? He ran as a Democrat, and lost as a Democrat, so it was his fucking DUTY!! And Clinton BENT OVER BACKWARDS to be nice, to be accomodating, to not go more negative than she had to, to NOT dump her Oppo file on him.

So, you know, fuck The Nation.

I see courting neocons is always going to stick to Hillary because the Berners really glued that one on bigly.

I know a few that used that against her and even said Trump was a safer bet because of Hillary’s neocon ways.

I wonder what they are thinking about now. But I don’t talk to them. I found you can’t talk to Berners. Especially if they know you voted for Clinton.

Bernie lost the nomination because he didn’t energize anyone outside of white people. So, let’s say we gain a few white people at the expense of enthusiasm of everyone else. Now stir in the RNC’s Oppo Dump on Sanders, and tell me again how he’s sure to have won.

That’s the elephant in the room. Bernie didn’t do anything for minorities in our party and a lot of his outreach efforts were condescending at best.

“Bernie would have won.”

What really pisses me off about Sanders’ defenders is that they’re unable, or unwilling, to note that Sanders is a ‘convenient Democrat.’ He interferes and intervenes in Democratic Party business, sows discord, then, he retreats to his status of being an Independent. I’m sick of him, and them. Whether they’ll admit it or not, Sanders played a huge role in splitting the Democratic Party last year, and after the damage was done, he suddenly changed his political party from Democratic to Independent. It’s only due to the way my parents reared me that I don’t hate Sanders and his supporters. I was taught not to hate people but to hate the things they do/say.

The truth is that Sanders is a user who likes the attention he gets from his supporters who seem to think he can do no wrong. He did something very wrong, alright, he inflicted lots of damage on the Democratic Party last year when he refused to abandon his campaign when he knew he was losing, and he did even more damage this week when he said that not all Trump supporters are racists. This might be true, but based on my observations, they may not be racists, but they do very little to distance themselves from them. When Steve King made his comment about the U.S. not being able to retain its alleged unique culture with “somebody else’s babies,” they remained eerily silent. Fruck, ‘em, fruck ‘em all. If I know something is wrong, and I don’t speak out against it, it means I endorse that behavior/position. My parents didn’t raise a fool, and I know when I’m witnessing racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, etc. It’s like Judge Judy says, “Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining.” Piss is not rain, and I know the difference between the two.

Texas’s most violent city back in the news:
Castillo Recognized as Shooter of 7 Because He Had Done It Before

LUBBOCK, TX - An arrest warrant and a police report provided new details on the shooting that injured seven people Monday night at Villa Town, 5401 South Q Drive.

Police said six of the seven victims were still hospitalized as of Wednesday.

Adrian Vicente Castillo, 23, was arrested Tuesday for aggravated assault. He was held Wednesday in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
*snip*
The warrant said a witness recognized Castillo from news coverage in 2015. This is not Castillo’s first time to fire a gun into a crowd of people.

A Lubbock Police Department press release on August 13, 2015, said Castillo was arrested after a shooting at The Copper Caboose, 5609 South Q Drive.

The 2015 press release said, “He went out to a vehicle where retrieved a handgun and began firing into a crowd in the parking lot.”

One person was hit in the 2015 shooting and the injuries were not life threatening.

The 2015 aggravated assault charge against Castillo was dropped when he agreed to accept guilt for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The possession charge carried a two-year prison sentence with credit for time already served in jail. He was released in August of 2016, according to local court records, having served far less than the full two years.

Perhaps the Rightwing spin machine would be correct though. It’s too bad that our side isn’t as aggressive in calling out Republican wrongdoing. We need to be more vocal in highlighting Republican misbehavior. We’re too polite.

We don’t have a 24 hour a day propaganda channel masqurading as news, nor do we have thousands of radio talkers blasting the public with actual facts. Until we find a way to counter that I don’t see us winning jack shit.

The response from Twitter looks good to me. It gives the history (such as it is) of the @alt* accounts, says the statutory authority is lacking in point 7 and then, in point 8, notes the Supreme Court has long protected anonymous political speech. The rest of the complaint is an explication of those things.

I’m of the opinion that if the @alt_uscis account had been threatening people, Twitter would not be throwing its weight behind a lawsuit to protect the user(s). For once, Twitter appears to be doing the right thing. I wonder how long that is going to last (although I did see on the @alt_uscis account that the ACLU is represnting it).

There’s an argument to be made that because Syria likely violated the Geneva Protocols (likely because there is a legal issue of whether use in a civil war violates the letter of the treaty, while obviously violating the spirit of the treaty), and as such has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity, intervention by other parties to those treaties could be allowed under international law.

That doesn’t necessarily mean getting involved in what is essentially a 4-sided civil war (Assad’s regime, Arab rebels, Kurdish rebels, and ISIS) is a good idea. But there is a legal and even moral justification for acting.

I just want to take this apart a little:

Sure, but the alt-left dumbfucks who thought Trump was a better option in terms of foreign intervention aren in for a rude fucking surprise. Especially because Trump will take the opening Assad has provided and morphs it into his long desired war w/ Iran. It’s already happening.

That’s how he’s going to keep us from getting into a direct shooting war with the Russian forces in Syria, by saying Assad will fall without Iran’s support. This will cause oil prices to spike and Putin’s Russia will get their long awaited payoff for interfering in our election on Trump’s behalf. Trump will get to pretend he’s a real “War President” while also giving him an excuse to abrogate the Iranian nuclear treaty Obama negotiated.

The only reason Trump said anything at all about the Syrian gas attack was because it was so egregious and because CENTCOM saw it happen in real time with their own eyes and made it clear to him in no uncertain terms this was a fact that would almost certainly leak if he tried to cover it up.

None of this get Clinton in, work with the dems for a few years, rise in the party, build relationships, til your ideas take hold. You know hard work and perseverance.

It’s the national disease.

Sure, but the alt-left dumbfucks who thought Trump was a better option in terms of foreign intervention aren in for a rude fucking surprise. Especially because Trump will take the opening Assad has provided and morphs it into his long desired war w/ Iran. It’s already happening.

[Embedded content]

That’s how he’s going to keep us from getting into a direct shooting war with the Russian forces in Syria, by saying Assad will fall without Iran’s support. This will cause oil prices to spike and Putin’s Russia will get their long awaited payoff for interfering in our election on Trump’s behalf. Trump will get to pretend he’s a real “War President” while also giving him an excuse to abrogate the Iranian nuclear treaty Obama negotiated.

Within the White House this will also be seen as a panacea for an abysmal first few months and worst ever approval ratings.

I don’t think taking the side of dictators is going to much help those dismal approval ratings. And since the only thing Trump really cares about is how much people (pretend to) like him… fuck, I wish I could say he wouldn’t be dumb enough to follow through, but no, he’s just that dumb.

I had an epiphany earlier today… Trump is the antithesis of Plato’s philosopher king. Incurious, petty, and too stupid to realize he’s not that smart.

THIS THIS THIS

People who have had no allegiance to, and have put no work into, the Democratic Party have this petulant attitude and think they should be able to dictate terms.

I think deep down he knows he’s not smart, just a carnival barker. Hence the over compensation and attacks. It’s why he was always trying to get in with the NY monied gentry. He knows he’s a 2 bit racist grifter.

I still like my analysis that Trump is wingnut God.

The god of those shouty evangelical preachers with the big hair and the rent-boys on the side is not some sophisticated theological construct. A stupid and bad-tempered old man with more power than he should have is the perfect model for that god. Like everything else wingnuts do, it’s projection in action.

Trump should get no support from Democrats or the mushy middle for any foreign adventures that aren’t caused by something like Pearl Harbor 2.0.

Adams has creeped me out for a long time. Something about his style. Won’t be surprised if some day someone finds corpses in his basement.

Exactly. Events aren’t being decided by what an intelligent and impartial observer thinks is likely happen with regard to his steadily failing approval numbers but what he and his team of dumbfucks want to happen. We’re dealing with the most intellectually incurious shitwits on the planet, so it’s unlikely that they’re going to suddenly re-examine their decision making paradigm when instead they can just go for bigger and bigger desperate gambles attempting to turn everything around.

And we all know how good a gambler Trump is, since he managed to go bankrupt running casinos.

I just left the Raw Story site. RS has a post in which those who worked with Trump when he appeared on SNL are saying he was struggling to read his lines during rehearsal.

When I was a kid, I spent a summer at Gramma’s house, I figured because somebody didn’t want me around at home (my parents were going through a hairy divorce). I laid on the floor in front of the TV and watched the Watergate hearings. (OK, I was a weird kid.) I’m getting that ‘what did they know, and when did they know it’ feeling all over again.

Ah, youth. It sucked then, and it sucks now.

Marvin Thompson, a former missionary, thinks something similar to what you think about evangelicals and why they voted for Trump in 2016. He blames it on their lack of knowledge about God and scripture and takes them to task for voting for a man whose every word and move/act in no way exemplifies Christian principles.

A short excerpt from his article:”Again, the worst in American voters speaks of those who empowered Trump. What made evangelicals bypass candidates with obvious biblical principles and more godly character for a man so devoid of those virtues? Alas, he appealed to their core values of character and morality. That is an indictment on evangelicals because their overt support validates and elevates his crassness and gutter character. The problem for evangelicals and the Church is convincing the world of sinners, skeptics, and cynics that there remains any abiding morality.”

There is definitely a cult of personality on the Right in regard to Trump and a reverence for him while many of them claim at the same time that they “looove the Lord and Jesus.”

Ah, youth. It sucked then, and it sucks now.

My grandmother lived about six blocks from us. I went over frequently because I could watch the “Dialing for Dollars” afternoon TV movie there and have a coke (one of the little bottles). I remember the same thing. Everything was preempted by the Watergate hearings. We didn’t turn off the tv, but watched together instead. I remember John Dean clear as day.
