Translation: This was an absolutely pointless exercise. Casualties will be light if at all, materiel lost will be minimal, and the base will likely be back to normal operations in a matter of hours. Further lending weight to the idea that Trump did not order this attack because it would be a vital target, but because it was readily available and he needed something to distract the media’s attention.

Given the response so far, mission accomplished.

Two good points from Josh Marshall:

Chemical weapons are horrible. Most ways that civilians die in war are horrible. Yet we have legitimate, important reasons for creating norms that prevent the use of certain classes of weapons. Chemical weapons are high on that list. But if the events of the last few days take you from “hands off, not our problem” to “Assad needs to go” it’s hard to come to any other conclusion than that you simply weren’t paying attention until now.

and

There are arguments for intervention and restraint. But given what we know of Trump, it is highly uncertain that this is part of either approach. It may simply be blowing some stuff up.

It’s blowing stuff up for the purpose of providing a distraction. It sure as fuck isn’t a humanitarian gesture, as Trump’s refugee ban remains in place. Nor is it about doing anything to remove Assad’s regime, else we would have done more than put a few dents in an airfield. No, this was about giving chicken hawks wood for a couple days.

They’ll present this as Trump shows how he’s “different” from Obama by taking unilateral action rather than consulting Congress or our allies and thus showing he’s a “leader.” And follow-up with Republicans rushing to justify Trump’s actions where they would have been demanding Obama’s head for even suggesting he’d bomb Syrian targets.

That one is predetermined
That one, it finds another
This one comes in one window
Sliding out the other
We need an instrument to take a measurement
To find out if loss could weigh
We need to know value
We need to place value
In case it all comes true
Could it be loss could weigh?
It’s always they that’s dying
But now it’s we that’s dying
So sooner comes the trying to understand that loss could weigh
We’ve been dragged through the fire
We bragged about that fire
But suddenly we’re tired
Could it be that loss could weigh?
Loss could weigh

So, it appears that Twitler has not done an Operation Barbarossa on Stali-putin after all.

The Russians green-lighted the attack so their bud Trump could look tough and distance himself from the Russiagate charges. They gave their other bud, Assad, enough warning to hold damage to a minimum, probably just some craters, a ramshackle building or two, and a few dead conscripts. Russia will compensate him for the damage, such as it is. In return, Russia gets an increase in oil prices, a re-vitalized stooge in the White House, and a more compliant Assad.
Come to think of it, Hitler and Stalin could have taken lessons from these two.

Read an interesting analysis of why Stalin was not worried about a German invasion: he had spies and agents watching German refineries with orders to report back if there was any sign that the Germans were starting to turn out large amounts of winter-grade lubricants.

And he had people keeping an eye on the herds of sheep and the textile mils to report if they were starting to turn out large volumes of woolen socks and underwear. because only a madman would invade Russia with summer-grade oil and light clothing…

Liberals need to take back the term “American Exceptionalism” from the nihilists libertarian conservatives.

American exceptionalism in my mind is the idea that (though rarely implemented fairly) any person can be born here or come here and improve their situation. The ideas that all men (and women) are created equal. The idea we are endowed with inalienable rights.

All those things conservatism throughout history has rejected.

We just had a President who did not come from any sort of wealth of privilege, who got where he did through hard work and ambition. Conservatives could have held him up as proof of American Exceptionalism and that our system works: anyone who tries hard enough can achieve the highest public office in the land regardless of race or origins.

But that would have meant acknowledging his accomplishments, however begrudgingly, and that was just too much for those jackasses.

Instead we got an endless stream of arguments that he was not legally qualified, that he was a Kenyan Muslim usurper, or at best a coddled affirmative-action baby who got voted in because of liberal guilt and/or people who voted (illegally) in exchange for Free Government Stuff.

Of note, it is unlikely that Chinese President Xi will be interested in golf at Mar-a-Lago:

scmp.com (Goes to the South China Morning Post):

More at SCMP:

China has ordered the closure of a sixth of the country’s golf courses since 2011, its top economic planner said, in an ongoing crackdown on a sport that is controversial for its links with the wealthy elite.

The ruling Communist Party has an ambivalent relationship with golf.

Local authorities have profited from selling land for courses, but they are seen as venues for shady deal-making between the elite and politicians.

Central authorities ordered a nationwide freeze on new golf courses in 2004, which was largely ignored.

Since a fresh crackdown was launched in 2011, 111 of China’s 683 golf courses nationwide had been ordered to shut, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the central planning agency, said in a statement posted on its website on Sunday.

Operators had voluntarily closed an additional 11 golf course, it added.

The only reason that many of them support Israel has nothing to do with support for the Jewish people who actually live there, it is just that a restored Jerusalem is necessary to fulfill their End Times prophecies.

One can be religious without believing in ancient superstitions. Just don’t try and tell that to a fundamentalist literalist.

Well, unless we’re talking about things like Mormonism or such, they are all ancient superstitions. It just depends on which superstition you cherry-pick.

“Genesis was figurative, not literal, but everything Jesus said was true (except there is no evidence for Jesus and he also endorsed slavery and such… .)”

My wife is reading Yelp reviews about Mar-a-Lago (currently rated at two stars). The reviews are a hoot.

For example:

This place is the most over-priced mediocre golf club ever. They doubled their initiation fee and it seems pretty obvious Trump is using his new position to cash in. Disgusting for a President to continue profiting off of his constituents. We checked it out and even spoke with current members who stated that they were disappointed with accommodations in comparison to other local properties for the price- and someone mentioned a fire ant problem on some of the greens, food being less than excellent and rude staff members. It’s pretty obvious that your paying for the Trump name, not exceptionally wonderful accommodations.

But, Trump’s push to slim the government may contradict a years-long effort to make DoD more efficient.

The federal hiring freeze, which was meant to trim wasteful positions in government, is having an impact on DoD’s ability to audit incurred costs in contracts.

Incurred cost audits look into claims from companies working for DoD. Some costs are reimbursable under a company’s contract with DoD. The Defense Contract Audit Agency looks into those contracts to make sure they are up to snuff.

“It is absolutely an issue for us because we came into [2017] lower on our end strength than we needed to complete the work we had planned for this year and we were under a hiring freeze in [2016] as a result of the 2016 defense authorization act,” Anita Bales, director of the DCAA told the House Armed Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee April 6.

Trump Tipped Off Australia before Launching Syria Strike (goes to the Sydney Morning Herald - more at the link):

Russia has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the missile strikes, accusing the US of preparing the attack before civilians were killed by gas in Idlib.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the action by the United States was “thoughtless”.

Russia has also suspended a Syrian air safety agreement with the United States in the wake of the strike.

“This is not the first time the United States has resorted to such a thoughtless step, which merely exacerbates existing problems and threatens global security,” the ministry said.

The ministry said it is clear the missile strike was prepared before the latest gas attack.

Earlier, the Kremlin denied Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical attack, saying the Syrian army doesn’t have chemical weapons.

Off topic: State E-mail received saying I passed my state water operator school examination in the “top third” of the class.

(I am not sure what that means - Could be #1, could be #20. I don’t necessarily think I would want a physician that passed in the “top third” of a class - the same goes for drinking water. I guess I’ll see when I get the final results.)

Now I have to pass a Homeland Security background check, which I’m guessing shouldn’t be too hard for them due to my military clearance. They only need to check what I’ve been up to since 1996 (and all the countries I’ve been to and why I have such a squeaky clean criminal record I’ve never even gotten a parking ticket in my whole life - that’s pretty suspicious).

The traditional job of a politician was to ensure an abundance of well paid jobs with benefits for people with minimal skills and education. Naturally, these factory, mining and construction jobs were to be reserved for whites, with blacks and Latinos doing the menial service jobs.

And that, I am sure was a major motivation for them voting for Trump,: he promised to bring back those “good old days”.

You paying for me to move? How about a college education for a fifty-six year old vet? And who would hire me after I graduated from college?

This whole “you should move and get education” is a really tone-deaf argument I don’t care much for from liberals.

How about this programme instead? The Democratic Party invests in building up the party in places like this and actually runs candidates for every seat, rather than hunkering down in a few states and becoming a regional party. (Like it or not, the Electoral College ensures square miles get votes. Democrats need to compete for all the square miles, not just the ones they currently control.)

There is no chance of the EC being abolished or even reformed to correspond to each state’s share of the population instead of its representation in congress, so if the Dems want to turn their votes on the ground into seats in Congress and the White House, they need a real “ground game”.

Syrian military officials appeared to anticipate the U.S. military’s night raid on Shayrat Air Base, evacuating personnel and moving equipment ahead of the strike, according to an eyewitness to the strike.

-ABC News

This is the equivalent of hitting empty tents in the desert, if that’s accurate.

The Trump admin needed to show action, so they lobbed dozens of cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield.

Woo.

At $2+ million a pop, we’re talking more than $100 million to help Islamic State and al Qaeda.

Wait. What?

Yeah, you read that right.

Attacking Assad’s air force helps Islamic State and Nursa Front (aka al Qaeda’s offshoot). One of the few things Assad has over his enemies is that he’s got an air force that he uses to lob weapons, including gas, to destroy, maim, and kill.

He’s used those airfields in his war that has killed upwards of 400,000 people so far.

This is the thing about intervening in a civil war where all the sides are awful. There are no good outcomes here.

Assad’s repeatedly engaged in democide - killing of populations so as to remain in power (not exactly the same as genocide, since it’s based on politics, not religion, ethnicity, or race per se). Hitting his air force helps his rivals so that they’re less likely to be hit by those aircraft. That means Islamic State benefited from Trump knocking down Assad’s air force even just a bit. Disrupting Assad’s forces helps Islamic State.

Likewise, if you go after Islamic State and Nursa Front, you’re helping Assad since the butcher of Damascus gets to consolidate and remain in power that much longer.

Russia wins here too, since they’re the ones supplying weapons (even if you blow up the stuff on the ground, Assad’s gonna need more stuff, and he’s not getting it from the US).

Add in the spillover effect, and that Trump hasn’t gamed this out beyond the airstrikes, and you see how short sighted this was, and why acting impetuously is what Trump does, and he doesn’t care about the consequences.

Oh, speaking of consequences, anyone want to take bets on whether Kushner gets booted for lying on his security clearance forms. This isn’t some inadvertent nonsense either. This is the kind of thing that ends your career.

But Mr. Kushner did not mention dozens of contacts with foreign leaders or officials in recent months. They include a December meeting with the Russian ambassador, Sergey I. Kislyak, and one with the head of a Russian state-owned bank, Vnesheconombank, arranged at Mr. Kislyak’s behest.

Dozens of contacts and meetings. All omitted. You lie on this form, you’re likely to be lying on a lot of other things too. His lawyer (Jaime Gorelick), says that this was inadvertent stuff. I’m not so sure.

All these inadvertent misrepresentations all flow in one direction - lying about contacts with Russians.

This many coincidences isn’t a coincidence. It would appear to be enemy action.

Depends on the point defense systems that Assad has, particularly at the base targeted. Older SAM systems, like the SA-3, SA-7, SA-11, which are widely used by Syria have limited efficiency against cruise missiles.

The newer Russian S-300 and S-400 have claimed capabilities against cruise missiles. Assad may not have that much in the way of those.

From a comment thread at Lawyers, Guns & Money:

……. Syria isn’t actually the point here. Trumpsky doesn’t give a hot squat about Assad, rebels (of any variety) or, frankly, anyone but himself & his immediate family (to the extent that he sees them as an extension of himself.

The key here, as with all things Trumpsky-related, is Russia, Russia, Russia. Tonight’s action should be understood as PRETEXT. Russia wants those sanctions lifted. Wants that desperately. This is the primary reason Trumpsky was installed in the White House. Trumpsky, unfortunately (for both his Russian puppet-masters & for us) is a ridiculous idiot. He quickly made lifting the sanctions politically less tenable than ever.

Thus, the pretext. Where do we suppose Assad got the chemical weapons he used? From Russia, of course. Trumpsky (after defending Assad as recently as last week) then gets instructed to lob some missiles at a target that will look legit, but not make any real strategic difference on the ground. Got to create the appearance of a “conflict” between Trumpsky & his good pal, the dictator Putin.

Now, send Suckretary of State Tex Drillerson (R - Exxon) to Moscow. Time for the “art of the deal”. What to expect: a dramatic announcement of an arrangement whereby, in exchange for us lifting the sanctions, Putin “helps” us reign in his (other) puppet, Assad. The Trumpsky regime makes a deal, saves the day, avoids a Mid-East war; Trumpsky’s a hero. Greatest President* ever! Poll numbers rise.

This has been the primary end game all along. Trumpsky is made President* & Putin gets the sanctions lifted (& Exxon gets to go ahead with their trillion $ deal with their Russian oil partners).

Quid. Pro. Quo. The fix was in already; all that was required was a pretext to get the US establishment to fall in line. Pay no attention to moose and squirrel.

See treason, say treason. :(

Donald J. Trump has always taken pride in his readiness to act on instinct, whether in real estate or reality television. On Thursday, an emotional President Trump took the greatest risk of his young presidency…In truth, it was an emotional act by a man suddenly aware that the world’s problems were now his — and that turning away, to him, was not an option…It was difficult to reconcile the anguished president with the snarky critic of American engagement…

Bigger munitions could take out a hangar and contents within.

I do find it interesting that the decision in the Virginia redistricting case went 8-0 against Republican gerrymandering this year.

Here’s my take:

Assad never gave up all his chemical weapons or the ability to make more.

Tillerson’s message of last week told Assad he had free rein.

Assad decided to see how much free rein he actually had.

Trump made a big stink about the attack, and his people made a bigger one (including Tillerson essentially saying ‘regime change’)

Trump brushed Assad back, but that’s it (confirmed by Tillerson stating that this doesn’t mean a policy change). Russia stepped aside and let it happen, but now they have to make a show of disapproval.

I don’t think Assad will double down, because I don’t think Russia will let him. What he MIGHT do is shoot a ‘rogue general’ for doing this heinous thing.

Net result: Trump gets to look manly and not at all puppetlike. Putin gets a bump in oil prices. Assad gets hit on the nose with rolled up newspaper. The Syrian people still get screwed.

Probably a bit too complicated. This was just to give their American puppet a chance to look manly. No further American involvement, no wider war, no bump in oil prices. Assad might double down; whether Putin lets him depends on whether Putin has tired of his American puppet’s relentless incompetence. The leaks from the F(S)BI are a strong indication that he has.

What, you mean his Alt-Reich buddies? Yeah. But seriously, how fucking dumb are they, anyway?

I mean, Trump had to do this to show how much more ‘decisive’ and ‘firm’ he is than Obama.

BTW, fucking Mitch McConnell can DIAF. He loudly opposed Obama doing pretty much exactly this in 2013, and now he thinks this is just great. Pretty clear now that he opposed Obama doing this because he wanted Obama to look weak and dithering. No concern for America’s position in the world. No real concern for the larger number of dead Syrians. Just political calculus. THAT is one evil motherfucker.

McConnell is basically a generic Republican. The above-described level of evil is simply the current Republican baseline.

I disagree. McConnell quietly makes it okay for the whole party to be completely partisan, and act solely on partisanship. He appears to lack any real principles.

- McConnell is the one who came up with the total obstruction plan in 2009.
- McConnell is the one who put making Obama a 1-term President ahead of the good of the country at a time when our economy was hanging by a thread.
- McConnell is the one who forced Reid’s hand on judicial filibusters in 2013.
- McConnell is the first Congressional leader to oppose Obama’s plan to attack Syria over the 2013 gas attacks.
- McConnell is the one who first came out with the plan to deny Obama the nomination of Scalia’s replacement.
- McConnell is the one who KNEW that the Russians were trying to elect Trump and made it clear that if this were made public before the election he’d denounce it as a partisan ploy.
- McConnell is the one who engineered the Nuclear Option.

If you think he’s just a generic Republican, I’d say he’s succeeded.

McConnell, more than anyone else currently or recently in office, has abused the customs and privileges of the Senate and or Washington generally to destroy those very customs and privileges, all for the Party over the good of the country, and he’s largely gotten everyone to go along with it, and say that Democrats would have done the same.

Trump adviser “Dr” Gorka thinks Syria airstrike sends a strong message against Islamic State.

These fucknuts don’t get who they attacked, or who’s even fighting which parties in Syria. They’re all interchangeable for their purposes (which is to project Trump strength, nothing more).

You know, I don’t even think McConnell’s thinking went that far. Instead, I think he realized more clearly than anyone else just how much disrespect the GOP could get away with, simply because Obama is black.

Still racist, but less ‘principled’ racist, and more opportunistically racist.

I see Comey as principled, but stupid. McConnell, OTOH, is thoroughly lacking any principle except Partei Uber Alles.

McConnell’s rap list is impressive. IMO any other Republican in McConnell’s position would have done much the same. The party really is that far gone. Any ultra-microscopic traces of decency that may have remained in the party after the W Bush years were immediately gone once Obama was elected.

I was thinking about this, and I don’t think so. I think McConnell is a product of Gingrich’s destruction of civility and bipartisanship, but in a much, much more subtle way. Gingrich is an egomaniac who needed to be seen doing this stuff. McConnell, OTOH, doesn’t appear to be as partisan, because he picks his battles very carefully. Look at how he reacted during Trump’s ‘Pussygrabber’ crisis. Ryan felt he had to make a public show of disapproval, and ended up getting burned. McConnell? Christ, could you even FIND McConnell during that time? And on the AHCA, Ryan led with his chin while McConnell? Well, hell - he doesn’t have one. But he mouthed meaningless support and did absolutely nothing to stop the inevitable collapse.

He’s sneaky and devious, and utterly without ethics or principle. He’s also smart enough not to get caught in anything he can’t talk his way out of. He demonstrated that you COULD BE the party of No, the party with no ideas, utterly obstructionist, and get reelected, as long as you’re on the Right, and the President is black.
