The Real World: Trump Edition

This is pretty good. Pretty much a more erudite version my point about verisimilitude as opposed to veracity.

The one thing I feel is missed is that the fuel of “reality” television is the engagement of the viewer’s ego. It’s not just about the spectacle, it’s about aligning oneself within the spectacle and thus reinforcing one’s notion of identity; thus the weird “family values” porn, the shows built for hate-watching and mocking the subjects. A big part of the Trump phenomenon is that his voters feel so intensely participant, even when they are passive: his victories are theirs (such that they will make up victories and gild failures), his “enemies” are theirs in a direct visceral manner.

The mistake underneath Debourd’s Society of the Spectacle is that he can’t conceive that people participate because they actually want to connect with other people…even “famous” people they don’t know, will never know…because their sense of self is weak (in no small part because the cultural understanding of the “self” is basically taken for granted as something atomic). And I’d argue that this is the niche that reality television—and the current spectacle-driven derp-and-circuses politics—fills. It completes people, cramming cheap filler into an existential gap.

Posted lead tweet of thread downstairs

- We knew Russians were at Shayrat airbase b/c they co-operated all aspects of Syrian air power/strikes, guide much of Syria’s campaign /2

- Which means Russia knew about the sarin attack, the same way they have known about all the Syrian barrel bombs and chlorine attacks /3

- There is no Syrian army anymore. There are Russian commanders and Iranian/Hezbollah ground forces. So fill in the blanks. /4

- The Kremlin and its generals understand the usefulness of fear, of massive demographic engineering, in the weaponization of migration /5

- And also the usefulness of destabilizing the region in order to achieve specific gains. Remember: chaos is sometimes the Kremlin strategy /6

- Russia also has the expertise in precision munitions. /7

- Russia was warned of strike and did not counter it.
At that moment, the Kremlin had a choice.
They could have thrown Assad under bus /8

- They didn’t. Instead, the Kremlin made up stories about how Assad was not responsible. Conspiracies about “provocation” etc /9

- Made their choice. By covering for Assad, blaming US, they have no further opportunities to deny their sins. We shouldn’t do it for them /10

- Russia is thus complicit in use of sarin gas agst civilians. They allowed US to bomb base b/c they view it as narrative pivot they need /11

- Kremlin increasingly concerned that Trump is constrained by investigations and new anti-Putin sentiments. That means two options /12

- Force your opponent to work harder for the deal; or else return to the narrative of America as “the main opponent.” /13

- Either is a win for Putin.
Narrative machines at full churn.
Bombing Syria once was not establishing a position of strength. /14

- Without a policy ON RUSSIA, not Syria, Tillerson still heads to Moscow on a position of weakness. /end

Ol’ Gerry owned a home in Beaver Creek, CO right underneath one of the chairlifts not far from where I grew up, he was one of the first buyers when the ski area opened in 1980. I’d see him skiing occasionally at Beaver Creek and Vail. Has a bunch of stuff named after him around here. The interstate highway through the county, an amphitheater, couple of ski runs, the biggest ballroom in Beaver Creek. A garden near the amphitheater is named after his wife Betty.

We’ve reached the points where the media and pundits are primarily concerned with evaluating not what happened, but how it looked. Because they’re performers critiquing another performance. Many of them aren’t even educated or informed enough to look at events in other terms.

Besides injecting adrenaline directly into the coding heart of Trump’s poll numbers, the bump in oil prices caused by the attack means billions of dollars in income for the forewarned Russians (not to mention the SoS’s former company and whatever oil stocks he and Trump and other administration billionaires may hold). It’s a win-win thing, unless of course you happen to be an actual Syrian civilian, especially a refugee.

“…A National Rifle Association employee accidentally negligently shot himself while doing firearms training at the organization’s headquarters, according to police.

The 46-year-old man’s pistol accidentally negligently discharged Thursday afternoon as he holstered the gun in Fairfax County, Virginia, police said.

The accidental negligent shooting happened at the NRA’s National Firearms Museum at 11250 Waples Mill Road in Fairfax.

The employee suffered a minor wound to his lower body and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Officers worked with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and no charges are expected, according to police.

News4 has reached out to the NRA for comment, but has not received an immediate response….”

i hate to get all machiavellian here, but this is one of those moments when you do NOT under any circumstances, tell the Russians you are initiating bombing, then you bomb the shit out of the airfield. Dead Russians? “We regret that there were Russians at the airfield. We had been assured by the Russians that there were no Russian forces cooperating with the Assad regime in its chemical weapons attack against civilians. We took them at their word.” Sadly, the last guy could have pulled that off. This guy, not so much.

The great thing about this news story this week was how it was pretty much taken for granted:

Brig. Gen. Select Kristin Goodwin will be moving to Colorado Springs soon to be installed as the commandant of cadets at the Air Force Academy. And she’ll be moving here with her wife and two children.

This may be the first time I’ve saluted an officer since Grant refused to accept Lee’s sword at Appomattox Court House.

“…An advocacy group has filed an official complaint with the Defense Department’s Inspector General’s Office to investigate a blog, christianfighterpilot.com, and potentially bring corrective action against its alleged owner, Air Force Lt. Col. Jonathan C. Dowty.

Mikey Weinstein, president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said his organization — which believes the blog to be in violation of Air Force standards and the Uniform Code of Military Justice — is seeking a full investigation after the blog published a piece insinuating incoming Air Force Academy commandant of cadets Brig. Gen. Kristin Goodwin may have lied to join the service….”

He bombed a bunch of non-Muslim brown people that the alt-right see as the defenders of Christians in Syria. That’s why the alt-right is pissed. The Kusher vs. Bannon conflict also plays into this in terms of Kushner being Jewish and Bannon being one of the alt-right’s anti-semitic homeboys.

Manhunt is underway for gun-store robbery suspect who sent manifesto to Trump

“…Police today also released a social media video that they said depicts Jakubowski’s sending a package to Trump. Spoden said police had found a 161-page manifesto that Jakubowski had allegedly written and sent to Trump Tuesday at the White House.

“When you look at his document that he wrote, it’s really a long list of injustices he believes the government and society and the upper class have put forward onto the rest of the citizens, so there’s really nothing specific where he’s saying, ‘I was wronged in this way’ or ‘I was wronged in that way,’” Spoden said. “It’s just an overview that he feels that government and law enforcement, in particular, are acting as terrorists and enslaving the people and creating this environment that he finds unacceptable.”

In communications prior to his disappearance, Jakubowski also allegedly made reference to his dying by the hand of Trump and expressed a desire to save everyone by taking out one politician at a time….”

It’s very oblivious trump and the trumpetts are very insecure in their Oval Office digs. Everything they do has to be shown as to how much better they are compared to the previous Oval Office occupant. Just about every statement, tweet, or news conference has a comparison as to how much better they are compared to President Obama. For an example just look at the photos of the two “war rooms”. It’s just saying “see we are just as tough as the other guy”. But notice the only military person in trumps photo is the door guard. trump seems to be operating without any career military advisors. No wonder trump’s vanity war-far missions are such failures.

All day I’ve had an ear-worm song buzzing between my ears. I just remembered the title.
It’s from the musical Annie Get Your Guns and goes like this:

Anything you can do,
I can do better
I can do anything
Better than you.
No, you can’t.
Yes, I can. No, you can’t.
Yes, I can. No, you can’t.
Yes, I can,
Yes, I can!
Anything you can be
I can be greater.
Sooner or later,
I’m greater than you.
No, you’re not. Yes, I am.
No, you’re not. Yes, I am.
No, you’re NOT!. Yes, I am.
Yes, I am!

And the true answer to trump is: NO YOU CAN’T

re: #128 Varek Raith

Because if we did, WTF did we hit???

We didn’t hit much of anything, but we did launch the missiles.

Tomahawk cruise missiles are not good weapons to hit flat open spaces (like two-mile long runways). All it takes is a road crew to patch up the holes.

There is plenty of weapons porn today on the Navy’s Website: navy.mil of yesterday’s launch.

What would really work is the Matra Durandal, but that involves putting piloted aircraft over the target, and up against Syria’s anti-aircraft defences.

Named for a mythical medieval French sword, the Durandal is an anti-runway penetration bomb developed by the French company Matra (now MBDA), designed to destroy airport and airfield runways and exported to a number of countries worldwide. As a simple crater in a runway could be just filled in, the Durandal deliberately utilizes two explosions in order to displace the concrete slabs of a runway, damage that is far harder to repair.

He has been just a little weird his whole time in political office. The plan is to also cut the water infrastructure and wastewater loan and grant programme of the USDA (a New Deal Era programme - but to be fair to Mr. Trump, the GOP has been after this programme ever since it was created). That programme was created to help us out here when the Great Depression was in full swing. Since then, banks and investors are not interested in investing in rural infrastructure, because they can’t profit from it.

Trump’s proposed cuts to rural programmes are likely going to get pushback from both rural Democrats and Republicans.

A related very interesting event happened here in Texas yesterday. Republicans everywhere have been pushing vouchers, and the Senate voted basically along party lines to allow vouchers here in Texas, though to try to entice rural Republicans, they limited it to cities with more than 285K people. When it got to the House, it went down in defeat 103-44. Even with the limitation, for too many rural areas the school is still one of the largest employers, and they knew what would eventually happen to their schools if money could be taken to support private schools.

The school voucher thing is a non-starter here in Nebraska for the same reason. We basically only have three significant cities - the rest of the area is rural. There are few private schools in most of the state’s area, so gutting public schools to fund private ones means (aside from the employment issue) there would be poor or no schooling across much of the state.

Syria War: US Warns of More after Missile Strikes (goes to the BBC, more there, including weapons porn released from the US Navy)

The US envoy to the UN has warned America may take further action after bombarding a Syrian air base suspected of using chemical weapons.

Nikki Haley said her country would not stand by when chemical weapons were used, as it was in its “vital interest” to stop their proliferation.

Syrian ally Russia accused the US of encouraging “terrorists” with its unilateral actions.

Moscow has promised to strengthen its ally Syria’s anti-aircraft defences.

It is also closing down a hotline with the US designed to avoid collisions between their air forces over Syria.

First-world problems, part MMDCCLXXII:

My Fertility App Made Me Too Stressed to Conceive (goes to the BBC).

She could have, I dunno, tried lots of sex instead? More at the BBC:

When Kathy Beaumont started trying for a baby two years ago, she turned to the many fertility apps on the market to discover when would be the best time of the month to conceive.

She took her temperature every day and logged it in an app called Fertility Friend, but soon found herself succumbing to a fertility-obsessed frenzy.

“I constantly analysed the analytics section of the app to see how my month looked and whether there was a temperature spike that indicated I was ovulating,” says Kathy, 32, a freelance travel copywriter.

“I based when we actively tried for a baby solely on when the app and ovulation kits told me I was ovulating.”

I think - just a hunch - that Bannon will lose the battle.

Jared is the son-in-law and is not going anywhere, whereas Bannon was a random (OK, not really random, but I think you know what I mean) pick and can just as easily be given the kick. Esp. now that at least half of the base is pissed off at Trump.

Yeah I don’t think it’s even a contest, Bannon is the overtly racist asshole alkie uncle the family barely tolerates at Thanksgiving dinner. He’s the kind who quickly wears out his welcome, whereas Kushner like you said is Trump’s daughter’s boy toy. And despite the abyss of his qualifications Jared probably looks like a genuine fucking genius compared to Trump’s sons Uday and Qusay, who given the principle of nepotistic sycophancy in operation are the only two cretins Jared actually ever has to appear better than.

The bigger problem though is that Jared does remain entirely, wholly, metaphysically unqualified in every conceivable way. Even his one academic achievement in life, getting into Harvard, required a bunch of sketchy ass flagrant bribery. His entire goddamned life up to this point makes the Peter Principle in comparison seem like the fucking utopian ideal of management efficiency. No matter how Trump’s administration goes forward Jared and Ivanka are there for the long haul, and that’s a look that will not age well.

So I’m seeing rumors in many places that Bannon may well be sending out his resumé looking for other work in the not-too-distant future (though most likely, he’ll just go back to his duties at Breitbart). The alt-right nutburgers are convinced that Mr. Kushner is behind this; they might be correct in their assessment, though it’s probably not just Kushner who’d like to see Bannon gone.

Who knows? Maybe Trump himself came to the realiztion that Bannon is a bitter, nihilistic schmuck, an albatross around his neck, and he needs to go. Trump’s well-known penchant for placing great weight on loyalty is certainly in play as well and let’s face it…….Kushner is - quite literally - part of the family.

Advantage: Kushner.

The political spectrum is completely distorted here in the States. By world standards, Obama and the Clintons are center right while the Republicans are off the scale, thanks to their ardent embrace of contradictory dogmas (authoritarianism and libertarianism for example). How this came to be could, and does, fill many books but the failure to thoroughly break the slave-holding culture after the Civil War is a critical factor, for it is the linear antecedent of today’s distinctly American version of conservatism. Another factor is the prevalence of commercialized religion and its role in the power structure of many areas.

To sum up how it looks like for me, with the caveat that none of us has nearly the full info. Just hunches.

Trump’s action was, on balance, a good thing. Because:

- He was pro-Assad, now not only he turns anti-Assad, but the bombing cements this for the future.

- He got problems with Putin’s Russia now, where the honeymoon was already over, but now it’s over over. In just two months. Maybe he will be less likely to cave to Putin now on other things. (And I think this also decides the “pee pee tape”/”puppet” issue. There was a natural symbiosis for a while, but it’s unlikely Putin has anything on Trump.)

- He basically failed in his attack too, and there’s some good in that.

- He pissed off his hardcore bigot base and went against his election isolationist promise.

(And yes, everything is subject to change, but that’s how things stand now.)

Person suggesting if Scotland was to leave the United Kingdom, it should join Canada. Amongst other things, he argues Scotland is closer to Canada than Hawai’i is to the continental USA.

bbc.com (more at the link)

As Scotland pushes for a second referendum on independence, one man is asking the previously unthinkable - if you’re going to quit the UK, why not join Canada?

Canadian writer Ken McGoogan says the unorthodox alliance makes sense.

“I think it would be terrific for both Scotland and Canada,” he says.

McGoogan first laid out his proposal in an opinion piece published in Canadian newspaper the Globe and Mail, where he argued that advancements in telecommunication technology and transatlantic travel have rendered pesky things like geographical boundaries “irrelevant”.

Besides, he points out, Scotland is closer to Newfoundland than Hawaii is to California.

Since Spain has withdrawn its opposition to a separate Scotland joining the EU, that path is much clearer for them now.

BTW, I’m up to my ears in school work this weekend, so I won’t be commenting much. The college has to submit all kinds of paperwork to get accredited by the provincial education office, and I have to submit my lesson plans and syllabi for 2014-15 — don’t ask me why those years. This would not be a problem for me if (a) I had not thrown away those notebooks over the summer, (b) my computer had not crashed last summer with some resulting data loss and (c) we were still using those textbooks. So, for four subjects, I have to recreate lesson plans and syllabi using textbooks I no longer use, enter them on the official forms, and hand them all in on Monday.

I’ve done one so far.

Person suggesting if Scotland was to leave the United Kingdom, it should join Canada. Amongst other things, he argues Scotland is closer to Canada than Hawai’i is to the continental USA.

Same sort of airheads who say that the US West Coast should split off and join Canada.

Scotland stands to get a better deal as an equal partner in the EU than as a vassal state to English-dominated Great Britain in any case.

The airheads in California are worse than this fellow in Scotland: Despite the fact the Yes California movement is being run by a guy in Siberia (no benefit to Russia on a potential breakup of the USA), wingnuts in the USA would just love to open up with a cruise missile barrage on California if they got the chance.

The closest stations to me are McCook, NE and Fort Morgan, CO. I have not used Amtrak before (both stations are quite a way from me, and I find Amtrak’s Website so confusing to figure out how to even get a ticket - and I only recently got a credit card anyway) that it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

If I could go to my local travel agent in Ogallala and buy a ticket in her office I might consider it. Amtrak doesn’t seem to allow travel agents to sell tickets.

Really? I’ve ordered tickets from them, with no problem. You should see what I go through to order Chinese rail tix.

For Amtrak, choose your stations and the date. The site will display a list of stations if you enter just a state abbreviation. Then choose the kind of ticket you want and add it to cart. Enter passenger info. Then pay. Not that hard, really.

I just looked at the Website: It does appear they changed it since the last time I tried - it used to just tell you there was no train on that date (without giving you alternative dates).

I punched in a hypothetical trip to Chicago (that would be only one train) - did get the usual “no checked baggage” from this station.

Since anywhere I would go by train from out here in the middle of nowhere necessarily would require baggage, that pretty much by itself means no trains for me.

On the other hand, when I went by Via Rail from The Pas, MB to Churchill, MB, I could go to the travel agent here in Nebraska, she could hunt around for the best fare and dates (we were travelling by sleeper car both ways), &c. I am not sufficiently versed in navigating Amtrak’s user-antagonistic Website to bother with them.

Compare the ribbons. The order of precedence is wrong. A Marine wouldn’t get that wrong.

public.navy.mil

He has the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal ribbon (it should be over on the medal rack on the other side - the green ribbon with white stripes) - and anyway that medal outranks the Presidential Unit Citation (the blue, yellow, and red ribbon).

In other words, an armchair warrior pretending to be a Marine.

It’s too bad the Stolen Valor law is unconstitutional (except in respect to the Gold Star Family pin). He would be right up there if they could identify him.

Well, the first Marine has his rank pin in the middle of his chest. Unless that was meant as some kind of statement, he is out of uniform.

The second one we dealt with.

The chief (the third one) has a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (the highest medal I earned) with two gold stars (ten additional issues - that seems very unlikely)

Yup. You’d think whoever put together that collage of people would have at least bothered to get out an order of precedence chart (which I linked above).

Any military member or veteran looking at that first picture posted would have at least thought something didn’t look right (that’s what drove me to the chart in the first place), since wearing both medals and ribbons, you don’t wear the ribbon associated with a medal. (In his case, the ribbon for the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal.)

As for political speech, it is banned in uniform (though permitted in private). The military or its personnel are not supposed to take a political position on the decisions of the civilian government.

The photos are apparently meant to evoke a visceral response from those who do not know such things as the proper display of medals and ribbons on a uniform.

Privately (due to a change in the law under GW Bush), you can wear your medals and ribbons on your civilian clothes (though they are still supposed to be displayed correctly). I don’t do so, and have only seen one or two people who do.

With the signing away of your data privacy by Mr. Trump and the Republicans, there has been much talk about getting a VPN.

No one tells you how to determine what a good VPN is though, so someone wrote an article for that.

engadget.com

More at Engadget:

Selecting a VPN you can trust already took research and consideration, weighing connection speeds and pricing, learning about who keeps records and for how long and more. VPN services are also like any other in that they change their record-keeping policies and privacy practices over time, so that’s another thing to keep up with.

In addition, these services are easy to misconfigure. Just over a year ago, VPN provider Perfect Privacy found a massive security hole in many services called “Port Fail.” It was a bug that de-anonymized users, and most VPN services ignored the problem until the press made noise about it. Many took weeks to put in a fix. One of those was a service endorsed by Lifehacker, which just shows that anyone can have problems finding a reputable VPN.

It can be overwhelming. It’s not as simple as using whatever VPN the security cool kids say is “the one,” because even popular services have been behaving badly. For example, popular service Hola VPN recently got caught selling user traffic to a botnet.

Anyway, yes, 5 little fluffballs. The yellow color with tabby markings is I guess a default for small cats. At least the tabby markings appear to be a dominant trait.

But it’s JBL’s most recent allegations which could be the most disturbing. JBL has reportedly had a tense relationship with lead SmackDown announcer Mauro Ranallo, whose current status with the company is unknown following a leave of absence due to ongoing struggles with bipolar disorder. Ranallo’s most recent struggles forced him to miss WrestleMania 33, and are believed to be triggered by an apparent feud with JBL.

But Assad is a reasonable secular guy, right?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says the bloody militancy plaguing his homeland is aimed at protecting the common interests of Israel and its partners, stressing that the “only option” left to save the nation is “victory” against foreign-backed terrorists.

“You can assume in any case that these terrorists are fighting for Israel. Even if they are not a regular Israeli army, they are still fighting for Israel. And Israel shares the objectives with Turkey, the United States, France, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other states. They all share the same objective,” Assad said in an interview with Croatian newspaper Vecernji published on Thursday.

“Israel is doing its best to support these terrorists in every place the Syrian army advances. They attack in one way or another in order to provide support to the terrorists and in order to stall the momentum of the Syrian Arab Army in facing them,” he added.

Preliminary Information

Whichever IAT you do, we will ask you (optionally) to report your attitudes toward or beliefs about these topics, and provide some general information about yourself. These demonstrations should be more valuable if you have also tried to describe your self-understanding of the characteristic that the IAT is designed to measure. Also, we would like to compare possible differences among groups in their IAT performance and opinions, at least among those who decide to participate.

This was interesting, and really hard on only one cuppa.

“You can assume in any case that these terrorists are fighting for Israel. Even if they are not a regular Israeli army, they are still fighting for Israel.”

Considering the Assads have been fighting the Muslim Brotherhood (who would like Israel to disappear) since Bashar’s father took over, he seems to be relying on the general ignorance of his audience.

Well, I see after taking the “religion” test that this does not seem to indicate much other than how my crippled fingers work on a keyboard (and if I go too fast, how it brings an aura on for a migraine).

Other than correlating the terms “bad” “good” “Christianity” “Islam” with images and words with each other, I don’t really see what they are tying to get at. (They say it is to show if you have implicit biases, but I don’t see how that would work. I guess that’s why people can afford to go to Harvard and I cannot.)

I think the data they were collecting is in the switch of good and bad words with the images. How well one works the keyboard is probably figured in.

My dad had that in both hands —had surgery. Worse word ever to spell.

I developed Dupuytren’s Contractures shortly after I started taking Phenobarbital for epilepsy when I was thrity-five (the normal onset of the disorder is seventy to eighty - as it turns out, Phenobarbital will trigger Dupuytren’s in those who are genetically inclined to develop it - people from Eastern and Northern Europe).

I’ve had four surgeries, and am now developing the problem in my feet (Lederhosen Disease). I did research to find out why I developed the disorder so young, and ran across several research papers from multiple countries linking Phenobarbital to Dupuytren’s.

I brought them to the attention of my neurologist and orthopaedic surgeon. They both got back with me and basically said “well, there’s no guarantee that stopping the Phenobarbital will stop the acceleration of the disorder, but it will re-start your uncontrolled seizures.”

Some choice there, and both would be “preëxisting conditions” if I were kicked out of the VA and forced back on the old insurance system pre-ACA.

That’s more than you ever wanted to know about my troubles though. (My ex-wife divorced me when I was diagnosed with epilepsy, citing that in court. She cited her religious faith - demon possession of her hub - really. Court sided with her and gave her everything and banned me from seeing my son, which made me homeless and sonless, but that’s a different story.)

And just imagine if California did become a province of Canada. California’s 38 million added to Canada’s 35 million. That would really upset the political balance in Canada. And the thought of Darrel Issa and Dana Roherbacher sitting in the Canadian House of Commons…

So sorry, can you go back to court?

No. There’s really nothing I can do about it. Florida law allows that. They assigned all my disability pay minus $20 as child support. (Federal law specifies VA Disability cannot be considered in a divorce decree, so the court was sure not to mention my disability, just to assign a figure.)

It’s in the past now with my ex-wife and I don’t care to ever see her again, even in a court room.

My son is now an adult and was trained by his mother from age seven to dislike me. My first family is irretrievably broken.

My wife the computer scientist and librarian loves me for me, not what she can get out of me. I need to go kiss her, be right back.

I checked the list. Even Denver is on it, and Mount Pleasant, IA. I’ve used both stations to shuttle between my kids’ homes. On the bright side, I doubt rural voters, and by extension their reps, are going to accept losing already nominal rail service.

If the Talking Yam were truthful about creating jerbz and benefiting his supporters, he’d propose improving passenger rail service, not slashing it to the point of non-existence.

Minneapolis/St. Paul is on the list too. They’re going to get rid of the Empire Builder route from Chicago to Portland/Seattle. I was looking forward to taking train vacations after I retire in a couple years.

Blood of tyrants, etc.

An employee of the National Firearms Museum accidentally shot himself during a training session on Thursday.

Fairfax County police said in a statement that the incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the museum on Waples Mill Road in Fairfax. They said the man was holstering a pistol during firearms training when it went off.

Shock Upset in the Making as GOP Admits Kansas Should Not Be in Play

Strange things are happening all over Donald Trump’s America, but I have to admit, I never thought we’d see this come to pass: Republicans are fretting over Tuesday’s special election for Kansas’s 4th Congressional District, a dark red seat encompassing Wichita that they should never have had to worry about. But here they are.
Goal Thermometer

On Thursday, Politico reported that the NRCC was parachuting in with a last-minute ad buy of almost $100,000—which goes a long way in a cheap state like Kansas—to attack Democrat James Thompson, a civil rights attorney and Army veteran, and prop up the Republican candidate, state Treasurer Ron Estes.

Why? Reporter Elena Schneider explains that local Republicans “are fretting that Estes’ margin is closer than expected.” Wow! One unnamed GOP consultant even says, “Kansas should not be in play, but Kansas is in play.”

(more at Daily Kos)

Trump won this seat by a huge margin.

If you know someone in KS-4, tell ‘em to get out and vote.

I notice even his nepotism is sexist as hell. Ivanka gets a title but is apparently just his minder in meetings. Tiffany doesn’t exist. Maybe she needs to get married?

April 9 is the anniversary of the fall of Bataan, the largest number of American troops captured in one event in the USA. National Former POW Day is established to recognise the tribulations that former POWs and their families go through after they return.

It is not to be confused with POW/MIA Day in September (first noted by President Carter in July, then eventually moved to September by President Reagan).

The history of the convoluted nature of the two days (and the Presidential proclamations surrounding each can be found here):

Wendell, I guess the new Maricopa County Sheriff is going to do away with Tent City. I’ll bet Joe is pissed…

I think ex-Shurf Joe has more to worry about right now than Tent City. He’s facing trial on the criminal contempt charge on April 25, his main attorney Mel McDonald had to leave the case for unspecified ethical reasons that required him to drop his representation of Arpaio. Legal watchers I know think it’s because Arpaio’s defense was going to be to get on the stand and lie, lie, and lie some more, McDonald knew he was going to lie, and professional rules of ethics say lawyers can’t knowingly represent someone who is lying. Whatever it was, Judge Bolton let him go this week.

Arpaio’s current attorney Mark Goldman, who has been on the case for a few weeks (but who is no stranger to Arpaio’s shenanigans) has asked for a delay in the case because the start of the case will interfere with an already-planned bar mitzvah. (No, I am not kidding.) This is just one of several attempts to throw something at the wall, ANYTHING, to see if anything sticks and the judge delays the case. So far, this hasn’t worked, Judge Bolton is still set to try him with no jury* on April 25, but there’s another hearing on some more motions on April 12.

* Yes, that was one of the previous delays. Arpaio’s attorneys argued Joe should be entitled to a jury. However, the maximum sentence on this charge is six months in jail, so no jury is required, per the judge. I think she wants to see this case over with before Joe dies of old age.

One of the first cases that Neil Gorsuch will hear in his position is the case of a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church preschool suing the Federal government because it won’t pay to pave their playground.

My atheist tax dollars at work, with a church attempting to use them to pay for their religious facilities.

The church insists it is a deprivation of a public service, and that the use of the playground is not religious in nature.

kansascity.com

(long article, includes the information the church provides on why funding a church facility is not a violation of separation of church and state)

This kind of grifting irritates the everloving shit out of me. No, I do not want my tax dollars paving the playground at the LCMS preschool. Nor at Wiccan circle preschool, or at the Muslim day school just around the corner from my office over in Tempe. I am an equal opportunity offender—my tax dollars should not go to ANY religious institution, even ones I might support! It just opens too many cans of worms to count, and trying to shove those worms back in would be a herculean task.

I see the Alliance Defending Freedom is helping this grifter church out. If they weren’t housed in a soulless office park backed up to the 101 freeway in Scottsdale, I’d picket those asshats just on general principles.

There are randomisers that change profiles or randomly search Google for odd-ball terms.
addons.mozilla.org

This is one that randomly changes your profile in Firefox.

You can also use search engines such as ixquick.com, which do not keep records (and are located in Europe). A search on Ixquick will tell your ISP nothing other than yo went to Ixquick.

Ultimately, it’s an arms race, and if you want to defend your privacy you have to fight the FCC, Congress, your ISP, and your own browser (Better Privacy for Firefox shows all the different trackers that are attached to getting a Webpage. Huffington Post is exceptionally guilty for attaching trackers. LGF only has a couple (Google Analytics, &c).

Using Better Privacy, as long as you’re willing to wait to reload pages, you eventually learn exactly which scripts to approve on a page and which to disallow. (I permit all scripts to run here because I like Mr. Johnson.)

Better Privacy also blows up so-called super cookies.
addons.mozilla.org (Better Privacy add on for Firefox)

And of course, simply shutting your browser when you aren’t using it and actually logging out of Websites means such advert tracking across Websites is harder. (I always close my browser unless I am actually using it.)

“There’s responsibility that goes around. Standing here and pointing fingers does not accomplish peace.”

Well, you know that pesky Trail of Tears can’t be blamed solely on Andrew Jackson, standing here and pointing fingers does not accomplish peace.

Well, you know that pesky Holocaust can’t be blamed solely on Adolph Hitler, standing here and pointing fingers does not accomplish peace.

Tell me again why this person isn’t either a magic balance fairy media pundit or a Republican politician?

If Bannon truly is out, or on his way out, that’s good news for humanity.

Still, I must confess a certain level of ambivalence. It’s possible that Trump, under the influence of Ivanka and Jared, might be turned into just a really bad President, instead of a catastrophically awful, apocalyptically bad President. This would reduce the likelihood of a 2018 wave, and retaking the WH in 2020.

But we’d be more likely to survive to see 2020.

You have a talent for writing in an entertaining way about topics that are otherwise anything BUT entertaining.

Why, thank you! Part of my day job is to write generally boring investigative reports about technical system issues at an evil too big to fail bank. There’s just no way to bring funny into a report that is going to be read by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

Speaking of the evil TBTF employer and the OCC, a friend of mine passed this along yesterday:

The most senior bank examiner for Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) has been removed by a U.S. regulator in the wake of the bank’s unauthorized accounts scandal, people familiar with the matter told Reuters this week.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the lead regulator for national banks, stripped the examiner, Bradley Linskens, of his supervisory powers within the last two weeks, said three sources, who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

reuters.com

I wonder if this is regulatory capture at work here or if something else is going on. It’s curious.

There may have been a few incidents where returning soldiers were spat on or called ‘babykillers’, but since they were for the most part draftees, of the same age as the protestors, I don’t think there was as much of this as the Right wants us to believe.

This is the normalization of corruption. Everyone’s seen just how bad a WH largely run by Bannon can be, so now by comparison being run by Jared and Ivanka seems good. But you’re right - it’s still bad. And we as a nation used to understand that.

I’m this close to writing off my generation politically again. It really feels like outside of careful self-selection, millennials are coming out either overwhelmingly and depressively conservative, or just straight on full Berniac with virtually no inbetween left. And considering how much overlap is there, they may end up functionally more outright conservative than the previous two generations at the rate it seems to be going.

The only saving grace seems to be the PoC slice of the generation, but that’s well on its way to being marginalized and well stripped of its voices, so who the fuck knows anymore.

[“Lunch Shaming”]

There are districts in which there were so many who qualified, they made it free for all the kids.

Starting this fall [2014], automatic free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students at lower income schools.

That means parents don’t have to fill out meal applications.

“It makes it definitely easier for parents, it relieves any anxiety a parent might have over filling out that application and putting their financial information on there,” said Swift.

It’s called the Community Eligibility Provision.

School districts will use information from assistance programs like SNAP to qualify for federal funding to pay for meals.

“It qualifies basically the whole school to get meals at no cost,” said Swift.

It’s going to have a big impact on New Mexico.

For example, right now 48 Albuquerque public schools get free meals through a similar program. But, the new approach will add another 23 schools to that list.

You guys forget two key extenuating circumstances:

1) Hillary was a Clinton

2) Hillary was a Democrat

Both of those automatically make whatever she or her family does exponentially worse than if any Republican did it. And we’re seeing that standard play out right now as outright nepotism is normalized, because IOKIYAR is the only true law in our country, forever and anon. It is also cheaper to just feed everybody than to keep up with the administrative costs of figuring out who is eligible.

SE Cupp is a FOX News straw-woman idea of an atheist to pass along their pablum to.

Cupp: As an atheist, I don’t like to be proselytized, but I also went to Catholic school. But I also don’t see who a prayer circle is hurting. This makes no sense to me, and frankly… the freedom of religion clause in the First Amendment exists so that you can worship in public without fear of persecution. That’s why America exists, in fact.

It’s truly amazing how galactically stupid Cupp’s comments are, which further cement her status as the world’s worst atheist. But more than that, she’s also apparently the world’s worst conservative. Remember, this shopping mall is a privately-owned business, and yet here’s Cupp the free market conservative implying that business owners shouldn’t be able prohibit group prayers on their own private property. It’d be interesting to hear Cupp’s argument defending a group of Muslims’ “right” to pray in say, a Christian book store.

That statement was made on The View.
