In France, National Front leader Marine Le Pen also appeared to distance herself from Trump, saying on Twitter that she “strongly condemned” the “horrible” strike on the Syrian airbase.

Poor airbase, it died a horrible death… oh wait, it’s alive!

Trump spent about 90 million dollars to launch an utterly meaningless attack that didn’t impact Assad’s military capability one bit.

But it did succeed in one thing: it got the US media to start praising him.

We could have put that money to good use, like paying for the first year and a quarter it’s costing us to keep the estranged wife tucked away in Trump Castle.

The Syrian airbase isn’t just the Monty Python Black Knight (tis but a flesh wound), but it appears that the Syrians were back up and running in hours. Sweepers, man your brooms.

Anyone thinking that a single military strike that was ineffectual shows resolve needs to be roundly ignored - and heckled for falling for Trump’s smoke screen.

Oh, and Ivanka.

You were silent about Syria for months (and years), as the body count rose. Your dad opposed any military action there, claiming that it would result in bad things (and no good things for the US). Yet he bombed an airbase and the base was back up and running in hours. Oh, but the media and pundits thought that this was his next and best pivot to date. They bought this baffling BS just as they’ve done all along.

Trump’s reactionary and will respond to any stimulus, and right now he thinks bombing something will improve his standing in the media and polls.

But back to Ivanka.

She’s a part of this administration, despite having no experience that would place her there other than she was Trump’s kid. That’s all it takes. Same with Jared. He’s there only because he’s married to Trump’s kid. They have no experience.

Sorry, running a family business doesn’t count as experience. Doing real estate deals isn’t experience on foreign policy, national security, or domestic policy either.

She was silent as her dad was gutting family leave.
She was silent as her dad and the GOP were about to gut health coverage for millions.
She’s still silent as the GOP and Trump plot to gut health coverage in Trumpcare v.2.0.

Looks get you only so far.

At some point, you’re judged on your actions and experience.

She has none. And her actions are fluff.

There’s no substitute for actual experience, and Trump’s surrounded himself with people who are getting on the job training for the positions they’re engaged in. Everyone from Sec. State on down, with the exception of McMaster, Mattis, and Chao. Incompetence, inexperience, and ignorance are the hallmarks of this regime.

Their intention is to sabotage government, and when you’re talking foreign policy, you affect the economy, alliances, and the global economy. None of these people have a clue how any of this works, and Trump thinks everything is going swimmingly.

He’s in a bubble, and Bannon and Kushner are trying to keep him in one. Trump has them playing off each other - but the real problem is Trump. He’s the one enabling the whole enterprise, and he’s a mess.

She is Nancy Reagan in his last term.

I’m not quite as forgiving as you. I’m just starting to enter the world of having to care for elderly parents/in-laws, so I have some empathy towards that.

However, she is her father’s daughter, IMO. She’s just as capable as fucking over people while whining she’s the victim (claiming she’s a stealth feminist while fucking over women employees at her own company on maternity leave) as her monster of a father.

This woman is now one of the most powerful people in the country simply because she and her husband have to be caretaker for her dad, who may be possibly senile. They have zero political experience, but are sitting in on the highest-level meetings with the military and foreign dignitaries.

That entire family is an unapologetic cancer on the White House, so what little sympathy I have for Ivanka babysitting Daddy evaporates fairly quickly.

My dead thread comment was relating to another statement, but it fits here as well (and so what if I’m an hour behind? I’m supposed to be getting my tax crap together for my accountant, but I don’t feel like it)

I’ve also seen no indication that Jared and Ivanka are any less venal, crooked or selfish than dear old dad. I still say that the enemy of my enemy is not my friend—just another enemy to keep my eye on.

I think normalizing Ivanka and Jared as the yam’s “good angels” is a tremendous mistake.

Journalism as a profession is critically endangered in the US. Most in the US news media view their jobs exclusively as providing sufficiently entertaining content to justify their ad rates. Most of the rest (i.e., Fox News) view their jobs exclusively as providing GOP propaganda.

I haven’t decided on the cream cheese & cheddar cheese. I have everything plus 1/2 & 1/2 at the ready. I might just go for a light cream finish. Or separate into 2 batches & try ea.

I tend to wing it & it always turns out fine.

I think the 1/2 & 1/2 will be perfect. There’s already so much creamy going on with the cheeses heavy cream would be overkill.

I said I don’t hate or envy her. Those sentiments do not mean I endorse her.

Pardon the heat of this, but—the right and left are unified in not knowing fucking anything about geopolitics or history, and it’s fucking exhausting. They don’t know they’re the metropole, and all this braying amounts to ignoring what’s being said by the people getting murdered in the periphery.

They’ve found the narrative that makes them feel good, important, and righteous/correct.

The irony that they’re accepting information from a state-run press of a socially-conservative petrostate that’s fucking over its own citizens just doesn’t fucking penetrate. I hate to be completely paranoid, but the rabbit hole could run as deep as the attack being Putie’s idea in the first place. Maybe not in specifics, but a little note to Assad that if he did something especially heinous that would trigger a Trump reaction, well… Wink wink nudge nudge…

Weird to me is that Bannon would be against blowing things up in Syria. I thought the Breitbart crowd wanted more death over there? Doesn’t bloodshed automatically lend a president credibility? I’m surprised that the cuck-clucking and Jew-hate for Kushner is felt to be more important than killing brown people and making Trump seem like a big man.

Good lord. The air forces of the world have devoted a lot of energy (and money) to ways to disable runways, developing a number of specific weapons for this purpose. In 1967, the Israelis disabled Egyptian and Syrian runways with the “concrete dibber,” later refined and sold by the French as the Durandal. These were purchased by the US Air Force among others.

“It was used by the USAF in Desert Storm, delivered by F-111E’s of the 20th Fighter Wing operating out of Turkey. 20th Wing flight commander Captain George Kelman said ‘there is nothing better at destroying a runway than a Durandal.’”

The RAF developed a very sophisticated device called JP-233 for cratering runways. The very first British strike of the Falklands War specifically targeted the runway at the Argentine held Port Stanley airport (though not with JP-233). In Rockets and Missiles (1977) British expert Bill Gunston refers to a cratering sub-munition as one of the payloads for the upcoming Tomahawk cruise missile.

Would I punch a white supremacist Nazi like Richard Spencer? Probably not, unless directly confronted.

Do I think he deserved the punch? Fuck. Yes.

Why?

He’s a white supremacist Nazi. He’s pretty much the walking definition of everything this country is allegedly supposed to oppose.

We spent nearly four years trying to put these bastards down in WW2, with tens of thousands of Americans paying the ultimate cost.

There’s also the whole Holocaust deal, that people like Spencer, at best, say is wildly exaggerated.

Fuck it. These people are a goddamned menace. There’s one advising the fucking POTUS. In 2017. These shitheels now have a toehold in our government.

The same government that Lincoln managed to save, only to get a bullet in his brains for the trouble. Courtesy of a white supremacist, by the way.

I’m not saying to go out and get your Punisher on, but white supremacist Nazis tend not to respond to reasoned discourse on why their particular brand of scumbaggery is bad for humanity.

So if I see someone like Spencer getting coldcocked, I will laugh my ass off. Because like it or not, white supremacist Nazis got the green light to let it all hang out in the last election.

And unfortunately, the way things are headed, a stern talking-to isn’t going to make them go away.

I don’t think anyone would argue that he didn’t deserve it, and that’s what makes it a moral dilemma. These people are vile and disgusting, and you’re right - they won’t listen to just words. (Hell, they probably won’t even listen to physical abuse, either.) However, if he deserved it, but none of us would feel morally justified in actually doing the punching…

I am certainly not going to judge anyone who laughs at him getting punched, though.

The blue tape is painter’s tape. It is a weak adhesive designed not to damage painted surfaces. It basically sums up Drumpf’s occupancy of Mar-a-Lago during Presidential operations: Don’t you dare leave one scratch on the furniture.

Honestly, I think the guy who punched him was morally justified. I’m probably walking into an ethical minefield on this, as I don’t know if I would have done what the mystery vigilante did.

That said, I think as a nation in general and liberals in particular, we need to maybe start thinking about defending ourselves by means other than speaking out.

Obama treated military intervention as a necessary evil, something that he wished to avoid but would call upon when the situation made other measures untenable. And for that, they dubbed him “weak” and “feckless,” claiming that he didn’t have the stomach to protect America.

re: #206 HappyWarrior

“Peaceful ethnic cleansing” is the phrase the little pissant uses.

The UN definition of “ethnic cleansing” is different than the definition of “genocide”. Many interchange these phrases not aware of the difference.

As ethnic cleansing has not been recognized as an independent crime under international law, there is no precise definition of this concept or the exact acts to be qualified as ethnic cleansing.

&

Genocide was first recognized as a crime under international law in 1946 by the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/96-I). It was codified as an independent crime in the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the Genocide Convention). The Convention has been ratified by 147 States (as of December 2016). The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has repeatedly stated that the Convention embodies principles that are part of general customary international law. This means that whether or not States have ratified the Genocide Convention, they are all bound as a matter of law by the principle that genocide is a crime prohibited under international law. The ICJ has also stated that the prohibition of genocide is a peremptory norm of international law (or ius cogens) and consequently, no derogation from it is allowed.

Basically, ethnic cleansing is an internal matter, not regarded as a reason for international intervention. Genocide is a bona fide reason to intervene.

I hate when politicians and *ahem* journalists use the words incorrectly.

From the UN Ethnic Cleansing link above:

The Commission of Experts also stated that the coercive practices used to remove the civilian population can include: murder, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, extrajudicial executions, rape and sexual assaults, severe physical injury to civilians, confinement of civilian population in ghetto areas, forcible removal, displacement and deportation of civilian population, deliberate military attacks or threats of attacks on civilians and civilian areas, use of civilians as human shields, destruction of property, robbery of personal property, attacks on hospitals, medical personnel, and locations with the Red Cross/Red Crescent emblem, among others.

The Commission of Experts added that these practices can “… constitute crimes against humanity and can be assimilated to specific war crimes. Furthermore, such acts could also fall within the meaning of the Genocide Convention.”

Well he got a “peaceful punching”

While trying to separate the moral from the legal, the question whether he should be punched is actually quite an interesting dillema that does require a fair amount of cognitive understand to unravel the complexities of whether laws are simply the written morality of a complex society, or whether they are simply a reflection of such based on the recognition of the human id requiring a set of ethical constructs to encode agreed upon moral values on a fragmented populace. If you can deconstruct this seemingly opposing, yet in reality positional truths, the conclusion, in its simplistic paradigm is fuck it, he’s a Nazi . Have at it.

Thing is, we knew back in 2004 that Syria was a serious threat, not only to it’s own citizens, but to stability in the region.

There can be crossover though. Abuse can equally be only verbal. I am just saying. I find it impossible to garner up much sympathy for an asshole who writes about ethnic cleansing people. I mean maybe if he was merely writing racial supremacy bullshit but this guy litertally advocates for cleansing people. I think the difference between abuse and bullying really isn’t as big as you’re making it out to be and abuse is more intimate while bullying is more to someone more distant. That’s correct. Each has specific legal meaning, and using genocide in international law/foreign policy can invoke specific requirements to act under the Genocide Convention.

Arguably, he’s engaging in ethnic cleansing, but more appropriately, he’s engaging in democide, which is not recognized in the international law because it looks at the government action as not against a specific religious, ethnic, or racial group, but rather an entire group of people based on political action/belief.

We’re a nation of laws, but there are also things, that, while not illegal, should not be condoned. Adultery, for instance, or any system that allows a person to intimidate someone else. I will not argue the idea that Nazis are allowed to exist just because there’s the possibility I might feel morally superior. Their philosophy is wrong, and because it attempts to eradicate others, should not be allowed to operate freely in this country.

Etymology
Based on Ancient Greek δῆμος (dêmos, “people”) +‎ -cide.

I hate when definitions don’t include the etymology. I never took Greek, so it didn’t make sense to me. Homocide + 1 person Democide = people

Punching anyone carries a low statistical likelihood of homicide. If you are willing to kill, finish the job.

re: #6 Charles Johnson

What the fuck is this.

The “shadowbrokers” thing must be a joke:

For peoples still being confused about TheShadowBrokers and Russia. If theshadowbrokers being Russian don’t you think we’d be in all those U.S. government reports on Russian hacking? TheShadowBrokers isn’t not fans of Russia or Putin

“we’re not Russians, that’s why we write like parody Russians”.

That is possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

It doesn’t make sense that General Sherman would burn American cities!
