In Which Trump Learns About the History of China and Korea in a 10-Minute Phone Coversation

The ongoing clown show
Politics • Views: 39,567

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the President of the United States should really know the history of China and Korea before he takes over the Oval Office.

Not to mention how embarrassing it is to publicly announce that he just learned this important information in a TEN MINUTE phone conversation with the president of China.

Good freaking grief, folks. Our country is in the hands of an utter buffoon.

Something similar to Iran’s president educating Tehran Tom Cotton on the US Constitution and law after the letter he sent.

Yeah, some people at Marvel are apparently of the opinion that their comics starring non-white male characters are killing their sales. Which is pretty much bullshit. Sales at Marvel are down, but comics like Coates’ “Black Panther,” “Ms. Marvel,” and others aren’t doing that badly.

What does hurt Marvel, at least in my opinion, is a combination of too many crossover events (which are expensive to follow and mess up storylines in individual comics), too much enthusiasm for reboots and renumberings of issues (which make it more confusing for readers to keep track of comics), and shotgunning too many new comics into the market (which makes it impossible for new comics to get and keep new readers).

Marvel still has way too many GamerGate-curious douchebros in their offices trying to make comics safe for hating girls and brown people again.

As a resident of China and an American citizen, I am truly, truly worried about Trump’s complete and total ignorance of foreign affairs. He’s taking lessons and, likely, advice from China’s president on how to deal with North Korea. IOW, we don’t have two leaders on approximately equal footing, either intellectually or geopolitically, but an expert (Xi Jinping) with years of political experience and a ninny with an overinflated sense of his own expertise. China will play Trump like a GD violin, and the USA will consequently lose inlfuence in the Asian region for years to come — especially if Il Trumpino does something stupid with the Navy task force.

By all accounts, Xi is an ambitious leader and he wants China to be the dominant power in the Asia-Pacific region. By ignoring the State Dept and the IC, Trump is walking into a trap of his own device, mark my words.

I am very glad I do not live anywhere near Beijing or the Korean border.

Some good news for when HappyWarrior gets online:

Daniel Helmer, an Army veteran and Rhodes Scholar emboldened by the election of President Donald Trump, on Tuesday morning announced his campaign to challenge Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-10th.

On the first day of his campaign, Helmer, a Democrat, said he has already raised $120,000 — a number he hopes will set him apart from a crowded field of candidates shaping up ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

“This election evidences a loss of trust between our people and our government and a desire for new leadership and fresh perspectives,” he said Monday afternoon as his family’s cocker spaniel and English bull terrier padded around the patio of their Fairfax County home. “It’s important for America that we fix this.”

So, what’d we learn this week in the Resistance? That Trump’s ignorance is boundless? That Trump decides that it’s more important to talk about the chocolate cake at Mar a Lago than the twists and turns of foreign policy and dealing with China after getting a 10 minute primer on Chinese and Korean history from the Chinese Premier Xi.

Oh, and that kitchen at Mar a Lago, well it’s not so good at following the health code:

Look for Trump to rail against health codes and fines for violations.

Trump gets a history lesson from China, which makes you wonder what the fuck his own advisers are telling him (though to be fair, his advisers are just as clueless about foreign affairs as he is). McMaster and Mattis (as former generals) can’t do all the heavy lifting, and Tillerson’s also out for himself.

[Embedded content]

Look for Trump to rail against health codes and fines for violations.

Trump gets a history lesson from China, which makes you wonder what the fuck his own advisers are telling him (though to be fair, his advisers are just as clueless about foreign affairs as he is). McMaster and Mattis (as former generals) can’t do all the heavy lifting, and Tillerson’s also out for himself.

Isn’t that just Trumps whole problem? Image is his driving force. Disease laden food on fake gold rim plates. All of his ‘decision” and lies are just calculated to project an image and fuck the reality.

Also had an epiphany about him and Putin. Putin wants to weaken America and he sees Trump as the best way to do it. Trump weaken America more than a weakened Hillary. Mind is boggled that this happened.

President XI did not stay at Emolu-Lago, but at a classier establishment (probably owned by Chinese people).

Also, FWIW, I’ll bet Xi was not impressed by the chocolate cake at all, as most Chinese people his age are not fond of sugary, creamy desserts.

Also, I can’t believe Trump spoke that sentence re: his conversation with Xi out loud. Unfortunately, Trump probably thinks a) this shows I’m listening and learning and/or b) this will generate sympathy for me because it shows how hard this job is.

Its like his interview in which he said Schumer and Pelosi should be begging him to save Obamacare or he might deliberately sabotage it, then pretty much admits he is bluffing because as President he now owns healthcare. Way to cut his own legs out from under him. I think the Democrats should “negotiate” with Trump by proposing their own reform: adding a public option for people who can’t find affordable insurance policies on the exchanges.

Awesome (h/t John Cole):

Crucified man had prior run-in with authorities

The gentleman arrested Thursday and tried before Pontius Pilate had a troubled background.

Born (possibly out of wedlock?) in a stable, this jobless thirty-something of Middle Eastern origin had had previous run-ins with local authorities for disturbing the peace, and had become increasingly associated with the members of a fringe religious group. He spent the majority of his time in the company of sex workers and criminals.

He had had prior run-ins with local authorities — most notably, an incident of vandalism in a community center when he wrecked the tables of several licensed money-lenders and bird-sellers. He had used violent language, too, claiming that he could destroy a gathering place and rebuild it.

At the time of his arrest, he had not held a fixed residence for years. Instead, he led an itinerant lifestyle, staying at the homes of friends and advocating the redistribution of wealth.

He had come to the attention of the authorities more than once for his unauthorized distribution of food, disruptive public behavior, and participation in farcical aquatic ceremonies.

Some say that his brutal punishment at the hands of the state was out of proportion to and unrelated to any of these incidents in his record.

But after all, he was no angel

Putin did what he set out to do - create chaos in the US by manipulating the media, political outcome, and low-information voters into picking the most ignorant and compromised candidate in the history of the nation.

The creation, like Frankenstein, is beyond his immediate control, or so he’d like people to think. But the chaos he’s inflicted inures benefits to him, where even “deteriorated US-Russia relations” means that Putin’s benefiting.

How?

Oil prices.

Conflict, or the threat of conflict, is a great way to boost oil prices, and Russia is heavily dependent on oil prices. Even Trump benefits from higher oil prices, since states that went for Trump rely disproportionately on oil and gas revenues to sustain their budgets, including the Dakotas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas among others. That too would put pressure on delivering more oil to market, and push for approval of pipelines that slice through sensitive areas, watersheds, and tribal lands.

Putin’s game in Syria is to maintain support for a client who continues buying weapons from Russia, and to maintain a base in the Med at Tartus. Putin also has interest in keeping Islamic State from overrunning Assad, but only just. Bogging down the West in conflict means Putin gets to continue his own power grab.

I learned that it’s part of Chinese food culture. Every meal should be a balance of spicy, salty, sweet, sour and bitter as much as possible. Having a typically super-sweet Western dessert would skew the balance bigly. Fruit is considered appropriate as a palate cleanser.

OTOH, moon cakes, the traditional snack for Mid-Autumn Festival are sometimes cloyingly sweet.

It’s possible that this is nothing more than a tragic accident, where she slipped and fell into the River. Or, there may be criminality involved. An investigation and autopsy should be able to make that determination.

Forever is a long time. Some people are hopeless (the DCCC?) but others can be persuaded if you run the right campaign. Gingrich nationalized the 1994 election — the Democrats need to do that in 2018. Agreed. Dems would be nuts to do any deal with them, Trump or the Republicans. They are all scum sucking liars.

If people continually ridicule Trump for being ignorant, he just might start getting briefed from experts, not because it is the smart thing to do, but because it makes him look better.

On this one…if it avoids WW3, I would be ok with him looking better.

“At the point”? Trump has been saying/tweeting stupid random shit for years: doing from an office in the White House, rather than Trump Tower is the only major difference. Unfortunately for us.

My main fear is that he is going to try to push Comey out at the FBI, and replace him with a “less-politicized” Director: I.e. a confirmed Trump/GOP hack who is going to make sure that any further investigations will be conducted in a “less-politicized” manner. Which we can all guess how….

Someone currently residing in the NY FBI office, I am sure.

re: #170 Hecuba’s daughter

Forever is a long time. Some people are hopeless (the DCCC?) but others can be persuaded if you run the right campaign. Gingrich nationalized the 1994 election — the Democrats need to do that in 2018. And they need to promote a positive message of what they will accomplish not just a negative set of ads (though those will help too).

You have to understand Kansas and how the media/TV/radio are used in the state. If you have basic cable what channels do you get? 30 channels and only FOX “news” for a 24/hour news channel. If you want to pay for premium cable (which my grandparents refuse to do because they are cheap) you will get CNN, and to get MSNBC you have to buy the most expensive package. The radio all around the state is nothing but RWNJ. That bubble is strong in Kansas.

The only time I’ve seen differently was a couple weeks ago when traveling through the state I saw a McDs and a gas station off of I-70 actually have CNN on (though all the old men drinking coffee there were talking about how great tRump was).

Also having grown up in Kansas - the default is voting R - no bad how bad the R is - they believe the R will always be better than the D. This is usually because of a single issue voting (abortion).

He comes off as the prick rich kid that didn’t do much in school knowing all along he had money coming from his rich daddy. School was for nothing but playing some sports, playing big man on campus with the girls and playing an asshole to everyone else.

It seems he really doesn’t know anything about anything.

But when he learns, it is like he is the first person ever to find out and now he is even more smarter and great then before.

I’m kinda getting a feeling for why he spent all of his time around his family. He probably was only invited out to dinner, parties and other social events once. When everyone learned he was a pompous idiot that couldn’t hold a conversation except about how great he was no one wanted anything to do with him.

And now his presidency is the same thing. No one really wants anything to do with him.

Should have seen it coming America. It was plain to see he was unqualified.

BOMB RADIUS DAMAGE

* Up to 1,000 yards: Obliterates everything.

* Up to 1 mile: Knocks people, tents, light buildings, cars and jeeps over within 1-mile radius.

* Up to 1.7 miles: shock wave kills people, causes severe damage to buildings, equipment, blows trucks, tanks off road.

* Up to 2 miles: causes deafness.

* Up to 5 miles: shakes ground, breaks windows.

* Up to 30 miles: 10,000 foot high mushroom cloud visible.

So, the target was apparently a tunnel.

21,000 pounds of explosives.

It comes a few days after a US Special Forces member was killed in fighting in the area. My guess is that they came upon a tunnel complex, the special forces soldier was killed, and the US determined that the application of high explosives might address the situation with what they consider finality.

That’d have to be one heck of a tunnel complex, and given the US history of dealing with tunnels (see Cu Chi in Vietnam), there’s a good chance that the bomb turns out to be ineffectual, or didn’t eliminate the threat.

Wiles, who was an ardent Trump supporter until the president directed strikes against a Syrian airbase, played a portion of a sermon he delivered to his congregation last Sunday in which he attacked Ivanka and Kushner for being Orthodox Jews and tools of “the deep state cabal in the White House.” Wiles claimed that the couple are devout followers of the late Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and sought “the dead rabbi’s messianic blessings on Donald Trump’s election victory,” asserting that Ivanka even credited Schneerson for protecting her father for an assassination attempt.

After blasting Schneerson for “being a scholar of the blasphemous Talmud” and “an esteemed teacher and practitioner for Kabbala, Jewish mysticism, witchcraft,” Wiles warned that “this is the rabbi that Jared and Ivanka revere” and “this is who is whispering in Donald Trump’s ear, ‘Bomb Syria.’

I’d warn about confirmation bias, and that there’s been plenty of smoking guns, let alone trash fires that are more than sufficient to bring impeachment against Trump and his cronies, but with this GOP, you’d need to have more than just smoking guns or even concrete evidence.

You’d need a majority in the House to budge the needle.

I was amazing to hang out with a friend who lives over 2000 miles away and kill zombies in Arizona Sunshine with the HTC Vive.

It’s so much healthier than the sit-down, controller-based games that we used to play, and it feels so much more like hanging out with a friend than regular gaming does.

Ummm, exactly how “freely” can forces “move around” in tunnels and caves? I mean, I can certainly see a military rationale for using big-ass bombs to destroy tunnel complexes or whatever, but isn’t it simple logic that by the time your enemy has had to retreat into a cave, free movement is not going to be one of their advantages?

But then, this is the Trump Administration: they usually stop at the “simple” part and seldom move on to the “logic”…

The same way that the Tora Bora complex was a nest of caves and tunnels that enabled al Qaeda to operate. It’s the same way the Vietcong used the Cu Chi tunnels to infiltrate South Vietnam and harass/attack/regroup/rearm against a superior fighting force. Asymmetrical warfare works, and guerrilla warfare relies on things like tunnels and caves to avoid detection and caves/tunnels are tough to crack even with high explosives.

Yes, but you can render them at least temporarily inoperable if you get close enough with high explosives (basically, you give them a good shake). That is, if the tunnel complexes aren’t built with seismic isolation, in which case you just piss the enemy off.

A large, complex cave system with multiple entries and exits can allow for a lot of movement. It would eliminate the need to go around or over mountains.

NO: but a certain somebody in senior management used to (from the Miami Herald):

It wasn’t rare to see [Donald Trump] check out the kitchen and give directions to the club’s floor personnel.

At the time, Mar-a-Lago passed inspections with flying colors, with one or two violations at most.

But as Trump jumped into presidential politics, so did the number of health violations.

I have a friend who works for United and is very defensive about this. He points out that the staff on the plane were not United employees, rather contractors, and it was airport security who beat the victim. Of course the policy to drag people off flights, instead of buying them out at any cost, must come from United management.

They’ve refunded the ticket price of everyone on the flight, lost a million in market value, and will pay millions in a settlement. They could have easily bought someone’s seat from them for far less.

The airline didn’t beat him, but they made a terrible and costly mistake by giving security from Chicago access to him so they could do what they do.

I’m aware of the nuance. But the public sees it as United beat him up. They hired the security guys, so….

I think Trump actually understands in his own dim way that he is not qualified to run the military, so he set the Generals loose with zero supervision.

I am so glad to hear that. I will never patronize them or their feeder lines ever again and if they get to pay through the nose as well, so much the better.

Yes the public does see it that way, and the clowns running United failed to shift the blame to the people who administered the beating, so they’re taking the full brunt of this themselves.

O’Hare hired the security guys, but United chooses to use O’Hare as their major hub.

re: #371 Clearly a Country For Sick Old Haters

It’s the way that they do business…

The guy was a paying customer who had boarded his flight. He may have even had bags checked, who knows… if you needed to allocate seats for flight crew, they should know that before they start putting butts on the plane, which is 30 minutes before the designated flight time. United had a crew at the airport ready to go to Louisville means that THEY ALREADY KNEW this from every bleeping person who had checked into the flight, since you need an hour to simply check your bags and wend your way through the security theatre and then trudge to wherever the hell the gate is. The folks at the gate should have already had this information in hand before a single ass even hits a seat.

If United couldn’t get their flight crews into the proper airport at the designated time, why should any other paying customer have to give up a seat that they’ve already paid for? If United needed those people in Louisville in time to make their flight, then it should be on the business itself to find an accommodation with someone, anyone before they start to even BOARD the plane.

I can’t think of a single other business that gets to operate this way and to be fair, there’s no reason to allow the airline industry to do so.

There are so many ways United could have avoided shooting themselves in the face like this, and once it happened, everyone involved in the policy and the incident should have resigned for the sake of all the people who work for United.

I’m told the culture has been badly damaged since the merger with Continental put a lot of Continental execs in charge. I saw a once-great 350 employee company ruined by the same thing, so I tend to believe it.

Yeah - and if there’s one thing I _never_ want to do, it’s that.
They have the obligatory multiplayer shooter thing, but I really want a co-op game.

I’ve avoided alt-space after a single visit, because rooms full of idiots annoy me, but with a friend in VR, we can set up a private room and enjoy events together. We plan to attend the Coachella live feed this weekend.

I’m no fan of multiplayer, but am fortunate to have a friend who enjoys co-op as much as I do.
