CuriousLurker aka Aminah - May Allah Embrace Your Kind Soul

Our dear friend and fierce advocate has left us
Her twitter page and a little of her wisdom

This is easily the hardest Page I have ever undertaken. No easy words can be found when a dear friend is suddenly gone. On March 10th I got what would be the last DM from her. Ordinarily we would chat a couple times a week. Days later she had not gone in or called in to work. Her boss went to her home to check on her. She found her already gone. On about March 12, 2017, Aminah had died in her sleep apparently entirely peacefully. A blessing few humans have. She deserved a kind exit.

The news came my way because I was getting no replies from her, and called her cell. Her boss, Heather, answered the phone and was kind enough to listen to me long enough to let me establish myself as a friend with a few answers to her probing questions. I had seen a comment about her being “Trumped out” and figured she was on an extended media break. So I waited a month before calling this very private person thinking, hoping just a politics/media vacation.

The wife and I are saddened to our core. It’s not a common thing for distant bloggers of disparate cultures to trust and extend real friendship. She did that for us, despite real stalkers and all the weirdness the ‘net can bring. I think it started when I sent her a gift of some stone and steel wire ants that an Arizona artist had made. Recently she did some excellent prints of some of my photography that caught her eye. Just shipped them right to me.

So in respect to her place among us here, her fierce advocacy against Islamophobia and antisemitism, her wit, art and kind side I’m linking a couple of her Pages that I really enjoyed. I welcome more of the same in the comments from you guys. Link her sharp comments or pages or when she lashed some troll to a humiliated weeping retreat. Repost, quote or link her very best.

Charles, we spoke of you sometimes and this wonderful oasis on the internet that you run. CuriousLurker had the most respect for you as a person and your skills. Thought of you very highly. I know she would have wanted that spoken to you here.

Some personal favorites of mine from her Pages.

CL, I was honored to consider you my friend. I don’t know what happens when we die but I hope you are in a better place and I think I speak for many Lizards when I say you will be missed. And RWC, thank you for doing this. Beautiful tribute to a great person.

I have a letter I wrote today that I was going to drop in the mail to her because I was a bit worried as well.

I am not a long-time lurker here, but CL was always one of the brightest spots, someone with deep moral grounding that I trusted as a person. One of the most special spots on LGF. RIP indeed. Tears.

RWC - it would be great if somehow we could connect with her son, just to let him know how much she was appreciated & loved here.

Oh my.

My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and everyone else who she touched, which includes many of us here at LGF, which she considered a refuge in the storm online.

Baruch Dayan Emet.

I know that she’d approve of the sentiment, because it was the thought and meaning behind the words that mattered most. She was a fierce believer in doing the right thing.

She will be missed.

Already miss you, Aminah…

It’s nice to put a first name to someone. I’ve been part of a great many internet communities but this really is one of the best ones. And Aminah was a big part of why I feel that way.

Late 50’s. Survivor of an aneurysm four years ago. I’m just so glad to hear it was a peaceful gentle end.

I was worried about her since we had not heard from her in some time.

Rest in Peace Aminah/Curious Lurker.

I, like the rest of you, will miss her contributions and her art knowledge we would sometimes chat about. And of course her politics and her search for peace. I think she has found it.

Charles Johnson  Apr 13, 2017 • 6:51:43pm

This news just destroys me.

When she first started participating at LGF, she encountered some of the hold-overs from the bad old days. And she sent me an email at one point saying she just couldn’t handle being at a site that had people like that, and she was leaving.

I wrote back and implored her to stay, telling her that her presence was more welcome than she knew, that she was helping me to remake LGF as a better place, and that I’d be devastated if she left. And she reconsidered, and stayed on, and contributed some absolutely great things to the site for years.

And she did help remake LGF in so many ways.

Now I’m devastated again, because she’s left us. I’m going to miss her so much. She made so many real friends here, and I was honored to be one of them.

Such a loss. But she’d want us to continue on the road she helped make, I know that. So long, Aminah.

Thanks for sharing the news, tragic as it is. Many of us were missing CL. I guess that won’t end.

CL was one of the folks whose insightful comments and inclusion drew me to LGF. Enjoyed every interaction as well as her interactions with everyone else.

This is a loss for all but especially for those of us lucky enough to have known her, if only through the limits of this media.

I will commit an act of kindness this weekend in her honor.

She tsk-tsked me a number of times, like a mother would. “Now teleskiguy, you don’t need to be so mean/vulgar/dickish…”

Saddest day of 2017 for me. So far.

I registered and de-lurked so I could add my condolences and well-wishes.

As always with such things, I’m at a loss for words. We never met, interacted a little on Twitter. But I miss her.

It feels hypocritical as a non-believer saying this, but I guess it’s the thought that counts: “Peace be upon you, Aminah.” My name’s Jody. I wish we’d met.

We’ll wait on the coffee and donuts required of all newcomers.

re: #76 Eric The Fruit Bat

In honor of the passing of Curious Lurker, I humbly present this Youtube video of the celebration of the passing of another Islamic usic legend, Nursat Fateh Ali Khan, master of the the Qawwali and a worldwide legend in his own right.

[Embedded content]

قد يسافر لوركر الغريب على قافلة للأبد الأحلام مع الله الرحمن الرحيم يكون الفرح.

MrBWS just finished listening to this and he is just stunned.
I’m thinking that this is the first time ever that he heard and felt the message of the music when the words were in an entirely different language.

As a musician himself, he is in total awe right now.

And unfortunately, I have another passing to report: Tom Coyne, Six-Time Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer for Sterling Sound, with a whopping 35 category wins.

But I’m glad MrBWS was floored on hearing some genuine Qawwali. Fateh Ali Khan’s signature album is Mustt Mustt

This is such a special group of people, and while I don’t want to get all sappy about it, but we need to remember to tell people how we feel about them while they’re here to hear (or read) it.

I might almost suggest an LGF buddy system?
Somewhere outside of LGF in real life where some of us can connect so when the inevitable comes to pass we can all be invited to another raising of a glass and share memories.

Nothing formal mind you…just discuss privately amongst yourselves.

I have to admit, this is a first for me. Granted I don’t participate in any other online community other than LGF (and Twitter, if you want to call it that). I’ve been reading Aminah’s stuff here for many years. She had a great voice and was cut-to-the-bone sharp when it came to Islam and Islamophobia.

I’ve visited other communities where they have sticky threads - sometimes many years old - announcing the passing of a long-time member. This is the first time I’ve experienced it firsthand, let alone with someone I was as virtually close to as CL. I counted her a real friend. She’s not the first friend I’ve lost, but as the most recent, I’m hurting right along with the rest of you. I’m thankful to have known her, but it just sucks for the rest of us to have to continue without her.

Let this be a reminder to all of us:

Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Tell your friends and family you love them. Treasure every moment you have with them. Take pleasure in the small things. Count your blessings. Use every chance you get to make the world a better place.

Love strongly, give freely, live valiantly

We are all better people for having had her in our lives. We shall carry on what she started and let her memory light our own paths through this ever changing maze we call life.

I wish nothing but peace and comfort for her family and our LGF family during this time.

This is how people find immortality — in the memories of those they left behind.

I’ve noted to others that as long as there is one person to remember your deeds or words, then you are not truly gone.

A person could put an E-mail, regular mail, or telephone number in the private member description area - if someone just suddenly disappeared (as opposed to flounced) a call or letter might be appropriate. (My wife would accept a call from someone identifying themselves as from Little Green Footballs, for example.)

I know just what your mama said
Always misunderstood
Gotta tell you something
I saw it in your eyes
I think I left your back seat
And now It’s always good
I fell asleep from day
And all the promises

There’s a lot of people
That let their will to say
I’ve got a lot of friends

And they’ve got beautiful eyes
That make my heart feel surprised
And you notice it
And that’s the truth
That’s the truth

Have me to you
I shine along underneath your view
I’ll be the one
To let you know when you’ve come undone

I like the stars in the sky
And watch the moonlight go by
I’ve got a lot of friends
And they’ve got beautiful eyes,
That make my heart feel surprised.
And that’s the truth,

When talking to a friend tonight, I explained how much the death of someone I never met in person has affected me. It was hard to maintain my composure because, although I only knew her from her posts here, she was someone whose words touched me and I admired her greatly.

May she rest in peace and her memory be a blessing to all who know her.

re: #143 klys (maker of Silmarils)

The one thing I am holding onto right now is that I don’t have to regret missing my chance to meet her. There is no “should have” there, and I am grateful for that.

Envying you right now because it’s a chance I never had :( We exchanged emails/DMs and I often wished we could meet in person, but…

…I don’t know what else to say that hasn’t already been said. I’m still feeling numb, still in denial (“What? I’ll never see a comment from her ever again?”)

When I first saw this thread, I thought it only meant she wouldn’t be returning to LGF. I’d attributed her absence to a desire to take a break. Never realized it meant the worst.

re: #158 Unshaken Defiance

Slowdive - Shine

Shine through the light
So my thoughts won’t
Have to fight
For your love
Just to see you in me
Hurts too much
Mind fills with the thought
Love you till I caught
Fish in the sky
Impossible to fly
See you walk away
Why can’t you stay and
Shine through the light
So my thoughts won’t
Have to fight
For your love
Just to see you in me
Hurts too much
High from above
I see the words of love
Decay to the ground
Betray what I’ve found

That’s a good question.

And brings up the point of a Will, and making sure one’s electronic estate is preserved according to one’s wishes.

First, I am so sorry to hear that CL is no longer with us. Safe passages, madame.

I’m just glad my parents were so very conscientious about making out wills and a medical power of attorney, setting up a trust for the house, and even arranging and paying for cremation services. When dad died three years ago, all those efforts made so many tasks easier. It still wasn’t *easy*; my brother went through heck getting my legally blind and hard of hearing mother down to the bank to sign papers in front of a notary, but the big stuff was done in advance.

This part is totally Aminah:

Her face is fresh as a flower
Is it her face in its brilliance or is it the moon itself?
Her face is sheer poetry
Her face has the beauty of the lotus flower
Her face is an artist’s thought and also its translation
Her face is both dream and realisation
Her face is some magical tale
Her face is both certainty and supposition
Her face is like no other seen anywhere
Splendidly luminous, dazzlingly radiant

I can’t believe the country will support that.

Mr. Trump picked former Washington state senator Don Benton (R) to run the Selective Service.

He has no military experience (thus is the first non-vet to run it), and the press release appeared to be written for him running the EPA.

This guy’s resume is at least as bad as every one else Trump has picked, and probably worse.

Benton was one of Trump’s early supporters, which appears to be the only thing that mattered.

I can’t see your original tweet … if we were to have a draft, equality of treatment would demand drafting women as well as men.

For the record, I am opposed to any sort of draft. The military as it exists today cannot function by simply a few weeks of boot camp and then “here’s a rifle.” That’s not how it works any more.

I’m…really at a loss for words here. Work has become such a hassle recently that I haven’t been as active as I previously was, so I’m just now walking in on this news. And even as young as I am, I’ve been here at LGF long enough to have seen more than one lizard reported as passed on. They always come as a shock, there’s never really any warning that it’s coming, and each leaves an indelible hole in the community. But perhaps that’s the best indication that one has left a lasting mark, that hole that can never be filled by those who loved them as friend and family.

Except that CL was one of those posters who reeled me into the LGF open forum experience. She’d find a topic and dig right down to the bottom of it and share her findings. In that sense she was true to her nym. She was funny (omg her trove of pixelated gifs!), wise, possessing both the sensitivity and passion of an artist, and a formidable force if you were game enough to try her.
I didn’t know her for as long or as well as alot of you, but she was a firecracker; so full of life, which is what makes all this so shocking.

I don’t.

Klys reminded me of something about CL. I think like me, she was often working on a project and would want to comment on a post not noticing people had moved on to a new thread.

I am posting at the end of a thread in her name.

Dittos. To all of you. CL and I DMed regularly in 2013 and 2014. In one of them she said:

Yep, barring suicide, execution, or terminal illness we have no way of knowing which morning is our last. Gotta make it count.

She made me a better person. She made LGF a better place. And, as Nyet said, the world. The world misses her. The ones that don’t know it didn’t know her. I will read all those old DMs over again, and learn more. She will lurk forever in my head and my heart.

I got lost in the DMs looking for a video she sent me. I’ll keep looking. Here’s another message:

Wow, the old DM I have between us is like 218 days. Yeah, that “Cancel my account!” thing isn’t working out that great. LOL

She wanted to leave, but we drew her back. Good work, Charles!

Another lurker here, coming out of the woodwork to extend my condolences. It’s been a rough spring; I’ve struggled since the recent death of my ex-husband, lost to suicide. Learning of CL’s passing, and seeing how you all are affected, is another reminder to us all to never take life for granted. Do good, so those of us that are left behind can only remember the good, as many of you have done here. I hope you all can find peace.

I’m heartbroken to hear this news and I will miss Aminah greatly. She helped me out privately with some concerns I had about my sister. Such a wonderful woman.

Hi Charles and friends: It’s Marjoriemoon. I can’t seem to get into the email associated with my account, but I guess I had more than one login (sorry Charles). So terribly sad to hear this news. She was a lovely, caring person. So nice to see she had so many friends. It’s all any of us can hope for. Baruch dayan emet.

I haven’t been able to participate much here at LGF lately, but I did notice an absence of posts by Curious Lurker. Her posts seemed to “stand out” and “stand up”.

We are all better for knowing a little part of her. Rest In Peace, beautiful lady.

She did make the world a better place! And I feel blessed to have had her in my world, if in just a little LGF way!
