I’ve done what I could in this space to avoid the subject of Hillary Clinton. I don’t want to be the perennial turd in the punchbowl. I’d hoped we’d finally seen the last of that name in public life — it’s been a long quarter of a century — and that we could all move on. Alas, no. Her daughter (angels and ministers of grace defend us) seems to be positioning herself for a political career. And Clinton herself duly emerged last week for a fawning, rapturous reception at the Women in the World conference in New York City. It simply amazes me the hold this family still has on the Democratic Party — and on liberals in general. The most popular question that came from interviewer Nick Kristof’s social-media outreach, for example, was: “Are you doing okay?” Here’s Michelle Goldberg: “I find myself wondering at odd times of the day and night: How is Hillary? Is she going to be all right?” Seriously, can you imagine anyone wondering the same after Walter Mondale or Michael Dukakis or John Kerry blew elections?
And everywhere you see not an excoriation of one of the worst campaigns in recent history, leading to the Trump nightmare, but an attempt to blame anyone or anything but Clinton herself for the epic fail. It wasn’t Clinton’s fault, we’re told. It never is. It was the voters’ — those ungrateful, deplorable know-nothings! Their sexism defeated her (despite a majority of white women voting for Trump). A wave of misogyny defeated her (ditto). James Comey is to blame. Bernie Sanders’s campaign — because it highlighted her enmeshment with Wall Street, her brain-dead interventionism and her rapacious money-grubbing since she left the State Department — was the problem. Millennial feminists were guilty as well, for not seeing what an amazing crusader for their cause this candidate was. And this, of course, is how Clinton sees it as well: She wasn’t responsible for her own campaign — her staffers were. As a new book on her campaign notes, after Clinton lost the Michigan primary to Sanders, “The blame belonged to her campaign team, she believed, for failing to hone her message, energize important constituencies, and take care of business in getting voters to the polls.” So by the time the general-election campaign came round, they’d fix that and win Michigan, right?
Let us review the facts: Clinton had the backing of the entire Democratic establishment, including the president (his biggest mistake in eight years by far), and was even married to the last, popular Democratic president. As in 2008, when she managed to lose to a neophyte whose middle name was Hussein, everything was stacked in her favor. In fact, the Clintons so intimidated other potential candidates and donors, she had the nomination all but wrapped up before she even started. And yet she was so bad a candidate, she still only managed to squeak through in the primaries against an elderly, stopped-clock socialist who wasn’t even in her party, and who spent his honeymoon in the Soviet Union. She ran with a popular Democratic incumbent president in the White House in a growing economy. She had the extra allure of possibly breaking a glass ceiling that — with any other female candidate — would have been as inspiring as the election of the first black president. In the general election, she was running against a malevolent buffoon with no political experience, with a deeply divided party behind him, and whose negatives were stratospheric. She outspent him by almost two-to-one. Her convention was far more impressive than his. The demographics favored her. And yet she still managed to lose!
“But … but … but …” her deluded fans insist, “she won the popular vote!” But that’s precisely my point. Any candidate who can win the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes and still manage to lose the Electoral College by 304 to 227 is so profoundly incompetent, so miserably useless as a politician, she should be drummed out of the party under a welter of derision. Compare her electoral college result with Al Gore’s, who also won the popular vote but lost in the Electoral College: 271 to 266. For that matter, compare hers with John Kerry’s, who lost the popular vote by 1.5 percent — 286 to 241. She couldn’t even find a halfway-decent speechwriter for her convention speech. The week before the election, she was campaigning in Arizona, for Pete’s sake. And she took off chunks of the summer, fundraising (at one point, in the swing states of Fire Island and Provincetown). Whenever she gave a speech, you could hear the air sucking out of the room minutes after she started. In the middle of an election campaign, she dismissed half of the Republican voters as “deplorable.” She lost Wisconsin, which she didn’t visit once. I could go on.
And so I find myself wondering at odd times of the day and night: Why is Trump in the White House? And then I remember. Hillary Clinton put him there.

Windows zero-days, SWIFT bank hacks, slick exploit loader among the contents.
The Shadow Brokers—the mysterious person or group that over the past eight months has leaked a gigabyte worth of the National Security Agency’s weaponized software exploits—just published its most significant release yet. Friday’s dump contains potent exploits and hacking tools that target most versions of Microsoft Windows and evidence of sophisticated hacks on the SWIFT banking system of several banks across the world.
Friday’s release—which came as much of the computing world was planning a long weekend to observe the Easter holiday—contains close to 300 megabytes of materials the leakers said were stolen from the NSA. The contents (a convenient overview is here) included compiled binaries for exploits that targeted vulnerabilities in a long line of Windows operating systems, including Windows 8 and Windows 2012. It also included a framework dubbed Fuzzbunch, a tool that resembles the Metasploit hacking framework that loads the binaries into targeted networks. Independent security experts who reviewed the contents said it was without question the most damaging Shadow Brokers release to date.
“It is by far the most powerful cache of exploits ever released,” Matthew Hickey, a security expert and co-founder of Hacker House, told Ars. “It is very significant as it effectively puts cyber weapons in the hands of anyone who downloads it. A number of these attacks appear to be 0-day exploits which have no patch and work completely from a remote network perspective.”One of the Windows zero-days flagged by Hickey is dubbed Eternalblue. It exploits a remote code-execution bug in the latest version of Windows 2008 R2 using the server message block and NetBT protocols. Another hacking tool known as Eternalromance contains an easy-to-use interface and “slick” code. Hickey said it exploits Windows systems over TCP ports 445 and 139. The exact cause of the bug is still being identified. Friday’s release contains several tools with the word “eternal” in their name that exploit previously unknown flaws in Windows desktops and servers.

Late Monday night, when many Americans were in bed, President Donald Trump quietly announced his intention to nominate former Washington state senator Don Benton (R) to be director of the Selective Service System, which operates the nation’s military draft.
This was when the problems first came to light.
They started with a White House statement that lauded Benton’s environmental record, and the three years he spent leading the Environmental Services Department in Clark County, Washington.
From the White House:
During his tenure [Benton], reduced the cost of removing hazardous waste from the waste stream while doubling citizen participation and tripling the tonnage of hazardous waste removed. Mr. Benton was also responsible for Clark County certifying more Green Schools than in any other county in Washington State.
Of the 204 words in the announcement, there wasn’t one mention of the military, the draft, or anything related to what the Selective Service System actually does. Nor were there any references to qualifications or experiences that prepare Benton to manage the millions of records in the draft system, or the agency’s roughly $25 million budget.
It was as if the White House had written the statement for a completely different job than the one Benton was being given.
Turns out, that’s exactly what happened.

The fact that SB provided that warning, though, should have very serious ramifications for the Vulnerabilities Equities Process, under which the NSA is supposed to consider whether it is better to alert companies to exploits or to sit on them and use them. It’s one thing to decide NSA’s spying takes precedence over the security of the customers of big American companies. It’s another thing to keep those exploits in a way that makes them vulnerable to theft, as both CIA and NSA have done.
But it should be beyond question that when an intelligence agency gets a very detailed list of a group of exploits a malicious entity plans to release, the agency should warn the American companies affected.

Frankly the other thing is I don’t think Sanders is the kind of person you want as a leader. I think good leaders are willing to listen to many arguments. I think Sanders has his heart and mind set on what he wants done and I guess I get why some might find that admirable but frankly I find that attitude unhelpful in a leader especially one that would likely be dealing with a Republican majority in one of the two Houses in Congress. I also think Clinton would have been much more smart about finding ways to get change longer lasting. I think Sanders would have been frustrated with Republican obstruction and implemented EOs that would have either been reversed by the next GOP President or overturned by judges. I’m not saying I think Sanders is unintelligent but temperament wise, I don’t think he’s as wise as Obama, Clinton, and Biden.

(I wish I could remember the keywords to find it again, but it had to do with sexism as well - something to the effect of HRC as maternal figure and seen as failing to provide adequate comfort)

Just had to block one of them, who thought that Bernie was the future of the Democrats, and that his message on civil/voting rights was a winning one. Considering that he got crushed everywhere people whose civil/voting rights are most under assault (aka minorities all over the nation), that doesn’t pass the smell test.

We talk in class about how the Shang Dynasty is the oldest proven dynasty in China, but that ancient Chinese, and most notably the historian Sima Qian, held that there was a more ancient dynasty called the Xia. I tell my students that the Shang was a mythical dynasty until the late 19th century when evidence was found and that I fully expect evidence of the Xia to be found some day.
The importance of a find from 14,000 years ago with such riches can’t be exaggerated, I think. So much of the human record is missing, but I like that they emphasize the importance of giving credence to the oral histories.

* Revising and extending my remarks here - the delegate count total figures in the superdelegates, but they went to Obama when the outcome was assured (excluding Michigan since they went outside the DNC order of primary dates). Without supers, the count was far closer - in fact, it was razor thin.
Obama had 1794.5 pledged delegates to Clinton’s 1732.5. It’s the super delegates that pushed Obama over the top.
By comparison, without supers, Hillary had… drumroll.. 2205 versus 1846 for Bernie. Not close.

The ultimate delegate count was 2,272.5 to 1,978. That wasn’t so close, but the popular vote tally was, and if Michigan was counted, Hillary would have had a higher popular vote tally there.
She learned the lesson, and when it came to the 2016 race, she had it won after Super Tuesday, but Bernie was last to know. Clinton crushed Bernie by every metric, states won, popular vote, delegates, supers, etc. On delegates: 2,842 to 1,865. On votes: 16,914,722 to 13,206,428.
Still, the Bernie or Busters persist in thinking that they’re the future of a party in which they were soundly beaten head-to-head with Clinton.

Given our current political climate, you’d think the Democrats would have jumped at the chance to take back a Congressional seat and demonstrate opposition to Trump, but you’d be wrong. While Thompson managed to raise $292,000 without his party’s help, 95% of which came from individuals, neither the DNC, DCCC, nor even the Kansas Democratic Party would help him grow that total in any substantial way. I actually think there’s a ton of hindsight bias going on with Clinton. The idea she went to only safe Dem areas is bs. On election eve she was in Arizona, hardly safe Dem territory. Now maybe the campaign did underestimate Trump in the Rust Belt but I do think she ran a better campaign than her detractors give her credit for.

When we tried to volunteer for one last day of canvassing, we found that the one paid organizer for 3 counties in North Florida, and other counties’ staff had been pulled to try to save Jacksonville. Fucking Florida.
That is just one of the tales to tell, there’s no sense in giving more aid and comfort.

Things got insane at NYP tonight.
First there was major power issues on the NEC into and out of NYP (Penn Station) starting around 4ish. Then there was an altercation that involved police during rush hour. During the altercation, some people thought they heard gunfire and started a stampede.
That brought out an even bigger police presence because there were already police and fire there due to a disabled train.
Right now, there’s more than 2 hour delays in/out of NYP.

And with the naysayers, she couldn’t do anything right no matter what she did. She met with small business groups—they said she was pandering. She went to red states during the primaries—they said she shouldn’t waste her time because those voters didn’t matter.
