Just finished Horizon Zero Dawn, I’ve been dragging it out, doing every side quest and even took a break because I didn’t want it to end. Yes, it’s that good, in my opinion it is one of the best video games ever in terms of the entire package; meaning the sum total of gameplay mechanics to story narrative, background, music, voice acting, environmental effects, world building, and graphics. The few complaints some people have about sometimes wooden facial expressions and repetitive gameplay are valid but also so minor in comparison to the degree of success here that they’re hardly worth mentioning. I do wish there were some changes made to the skill upgrade tree but this again is a very minor complaint.

I had serious doubts when I bought it that it could live up to the hype or ever possibly explain the premise of primitive future humans living in a world dominated by machine creatures but the developers really stepped up to the challenge and created a plot line that not only makes everything fairly believable but is deeply moving and emotionally effecting in the process.

10/10. This game alone makes the PS4 Pro and a 4K TV worth the price of admission.

I had to do some Googlefoo to figure out what model of Gibson guitar Joe B. is playing in the video above.

In case anyone else was wondering like I was it is a 2007 Custom Gibson Skylark.

Never saw one before so I had to find out. Looks almost like it has a bit of a resonator plate at the back end around the bridge. Very interesting. Sure has a good tone for slide.

“… Locked in a perpetual tug of war between the imposing gravity of Jupiter and the smaller, consistent pulls of its neighboring moons, Io’s distorted orbit causes it to flex as it swoops around the gas giant. The stretching causes friction and intense heat in Io’s interior, sparking massive eruptions across its surface.”

The problem isn’t the acid reflux, I can deal with that. It’s not knowing if it’s acid reflux or my heart. The uncertainty makes deciding what to do difficult.

Eg. I took nitroglycerine today in case it was angina. All that did was make me sleep for 3 hrs.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Service on the NEC has finally been restored and the hours-long delays have finally eased out.

What a nightmare for commuters yesterday. From 3pm till late in the evening, there were nonstop delays starting with power problems, which turned into a disabled train, and then panic when law enforcement tasered an unruly person in Penn Station, and the sound of the taser got mistaken for gunfire and started a panic where people rushed for safety and a few people were injured.

Not a shining moment in NY Penn Station recent history (which includes two derailments in the past four weeks). We need new tunnels under the Hudson, but those tunnels, and a nearby bridge, all need replacement or added capacity, but the politicians have tied all of that to building new stations that don’t add new capacity.

Shiny stuff at or above ground. Stations that are really shopping malls. Instead of the critical infrastructure, they’re dicking around on pushing for shiny new terminals/stations. This is where the bulk of the cost for a new Gateway Tunnel is going, not the tunnels themselves.

The scope of the work needs to be identify as what’s absolutely critical - the tunnels and bridge. And do them. Everything else is secondary.

And expecting any money from Trump is like getting blood from a stone. Trump’s infrastructure statements aren’t policy, and they aren’t a plan. It’s vaporware that doesn’t have the support of the GOP. His plan certainly wont fund the kind of mass transit projects that move millions of people daily.

Penn Station moves more people daily than there are residents in some states.

As I noted yesterday, the downside to Trump spending a lot of his time fucking off is that he’s not made an effort to fill 3/4 of the posts that need to be filled. In his small-minded world, those people are unnecessary and he can run things fine without them. But in the real world, international diplomacy relies in large part upon an intricate network of diplomats and secretaries that has evolved over the decades since WWII. Without those people in place, we end up barreling from one crisis to another because the people in charge have no fucking clue what’s going on.

Damnit…local news is playing videos of the MOAB bomb.

This is where I hate America. Sorry. Pet peeve.

It’s a big freaking bomb. It destroys things and kills people. It is not a big toy that goes boom and it shouldn’t be treated as such. It is not a big firecracker.

And yes, I know war and all. And bombing happens in war.

And then they follow it up with coverage of the Ohio State spring sportsball game.

That is America. We are so good at watching something getting blown up and then going out and cooking brats on a grill in a parking lot before a big game. Maybe everyone feels safe because we have the big bomb.

Arrrrgh.

Oh, and last night Trump installed Scott Garrett as head of the ExIm Bank, an organization Garrett repeatedly tried to shut down.

This one’s personal. Garrett was my Congressman after the last census and redrawing of Congressional districts. He lost to Democrat Josh Gottheimer. So, he’s failed upwards into a position where he can fuck around with multinational companies that rely on the bank to help create opportunities for economic growth and jobs here in the US.

He’s completely unqualified for the position, which when combined with his intent to destroy the bank, shows that Trump’s ultimate goals are sabotaging functioning government, not governing.

He’d rather play golf all the time and watch government fall apart.

And the GOP is cheering him all the way to hell.

“The game is set about one thousand years in the future in a world where humans have regressed to primitive tribal societies as a result of some unknown calamity that destroyed human civilization.”

Yes, a whole bunch of stupid motherfuckers woke up one crisp November day and said, “I gotta vote for the carnival barker, ‘cause someone said somethin’ bout some emails.”

re: #68 I cannot.

At risk for WHAT?! I say this as someone who usually sleeps on a recliner…

Depending on factors (particularly age, (but other factors like diabetes, nutrition, or neuro status also apply) the circulation under your skin starts to weaken. That makes your skin vulnerable to pressure. When you sit up for extended periods of time, you put a lot of weight on your sacrum and that squeezes blood away from the skin. You may notice a burning sensation on you backside if you’re overdoing it. If you have a companion, have that person poke the skin at the top of your butt cheeks and cleft with a fingertip. Normally that will leave a white spot that goes back to pink within a second or two. That the blood moving away from the finger poke and refilling the spot that the pressure pushed away.
I interrupt this message to report to MrsJ that there is a pair of legs sticking out of April’s hoochie.
But if you have reddened skin that doesn’t turn white when you poke it, that means the blood isn’t moving around, and that is actually a Stage I pressure sore.
The best prevention measures are adequate nutrition, hydration, and off loading. By off loading I mean changes of position to give the vulnerable areas of your skin a break.

Your skin may well tolerate extended recliner time. So don’t necessarily take this as a rebuke to your personal habits. It’s sort of a shout out to lizards with relatives who are elderly and more sedentary and otherwise vulnerable to skin breakdowns.

So, that MOAB strike in Afghanistan that originally claimed 36 fighters were killed has morphed into 100 dead according to Daily Caller.

We’re still talking about a strike targeting 800, and you got 12.5%. Better than the ~5%, but still not great.

And it still doesn’t act as a deterrent or send any message to anyone that remains intent on attacking the US or seeks to do the US harm by any means necessary.

It doesn’t stop Assad from killing civilians with reckless abandon.
It doesn’t stop Jong Un from testing nukes or carrying out missile tests.
It doesn’t stop IS or Nursa from carrying out attacks, or IS taking credit for terror attacks around the world that were conducted by lone wolves.

And none of Trump’s actions have made the US safer. They only serve to show how unhinged Trump is - not unlike the president in Escape from LA, whose religious mania is second to his need to attack his enemies with an ultimate doomsday weapon.

Well, even the silver linings under the Trump Administration are likely to be composed mainly of tarnish, but at least The Yam’s nomination - even of a GOPer hack - to the Ex-Im Bank Board shows they’re not going to kill the thing entirely. (?? non-renewal of its charter or something??). For some reason I’ve never been able to quite unravel, getting rid of the Ex-Im Bank has been a Republican fetish in recent years. I read somewhere (here, probably) that the Admin has (surprise!) changed its mind: so there’s one small positive to report…

China has warned that “conflict could break out at any moment” as tension over North Korea increases.

Mr Wang’s comments come as the US voices increasing concern at North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons and deploys a Navy carrier group off the Korean peninsula.

China, North Korea’s only backer, fears conflict could cause the regime to collapse and problems on its border.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of haggling with car dealers either. As for our previous car, we knew we wouldn’t get diddly for it (I expected the Mercedes dealer to bring a forklift up to our Honda, take it over to the Dumpster, and drop it in.)

As far test-driving cars, I’ve never really done that much when buying a car.

As far as the Denver Mercedes dealer, there were no games. The car we discussed over the telephone was ready for us when we arrived. The hardest part of the sale was they were expecting to have us come in with loan papaerwork when we came in with a money order from the bank for the full amount.

Apparently the car dealer wasn’t expecting us to pay cash for our new car.

Happy Caturday folks. Maybe cat pics later cause much of the news is pretty somber.

I was looking closer at the makeup of the task force sent to Korea. The Carl Vinson of course we know as a top line super-carrier. 60 or more strike craft. Plus her CG and Aegis DDG’s. Normally they also have Desron 1 another six destroyers. ASW in depth, mid course + terminal BMD. That is a strike group equipped to hold off a peer opponent like China. One of those ships in the group is the one that shot down a satellite.

I’m not saying any of this brinkmanship is the best plan, or that Trump is helping in any way. The US Navy is above the political fray, and is displaying a force designed to deter as loudly as it possibly can. That’s our sons and daughters doing what the Navy does. I have to admit I’m a little bit more hawkish than some about the DPRK and ICBM’s. But more as in making the missiles at Greely and Vandenberg more reliable than sparking a Korean land battle or worse. I’m old enough I really did duck and cover drills in elementary school.

I did duck and cover drills in elementary school as well.

I’m not sure which ship “shot down a satellite” (as I recall, there was a whole lot of noise from the US government when China did that, because of the huge mess of parts that now have to be tracked in space).

Navy task forces have traditionally been used to wave the flag and such. This particular task force being diverted from Australia to Korea, coupled with the bellicose statements from both Rexxon Tillerson and Donald Trump does not do much more than up brinkmanship.

North Korea was no threat to the USA, and still isn’t. As far as them trying to develop missiles, we certainly can’t go to war with every country that does that. Moreover, the loser in this scenario is South Korea. Regardless of whether we can pulverise North Korea or no, they will take out Seoul in the first few hours of an attack, a city with twenty million people.

And China has moved over a hundred thousand troops to the North Korean border. While pundits are claiming China is concerned about refugees streaming across the border, the last time China moved a mass of troops like that it was to defend North Korea from the US-led incursion into the North. I have no doubt that if the USA tried to attack North Korea that China would come to the North’s aid rather than either see it collapse or us take it over.

I took a different tact when we bought our minivan (2008). I took my wife and let the salesman keep us for hours. Then I lowballed the fuck out of them and walked out the door. Shocking even the wife. They chased after us and tried like hell to get me out of the car and back in the dealer. Which I did and got the price I (mostly) wanted.

I took a corporate attorney with me. I got everything I wanted. They just wanted to get her out of there. Heh.

re: #138 Anymouse

The real fear seems to be North Korea would take any western hostile action out on South Korea. Everyone says they already have much artillery aimed right at Seoul only 60 miles inside the DMZ.

Should they mess with South Korea, then it may force Western nations to act. Then of course would China allow that?

Hopefully the U.S. has gotten some kind of an indication as to what China would do in all cases. And what would Russia do? Surprises at this time would not be good.

Those of you with Twitter accounts can follow Joe as he travels and he’ll post little clips of him playing vintage gear. He’s also a collector. Welcome To Nerdville: Inside Joe Bonamassa’s Museum and Vintage Guitar Collection

If you have any knowledge of guitars and amps, or wanted, you’ll like this.
And I said it before, I’ll say it again, if you get the chance, see Joe. You will never regret the money spent.

I’ve checked out his collection. Mighty fine.

There’s a guy here in Ohio that deals in rare vintage guitars and amps. Seeing Joe B’s collection reminded me of some of his collection. I’m wondering if he has sold some items to Joe. He has a pretty exclusive clientele.

I don’t know how Queen Elizabeth is taking this (or if she knows the controversy surrounding this carriage ride for Trump), but she could just beg off claiming age and infirmity make such a ride impossible for her.

If Mr. Trump wants to see the carriage or sit in it, she can do with it like was done with the semi-truck at the White House.

A while back a friend and I were sitting on my patio under the awning. Suddenly there was a THUMP-roll-roll-roll down the awning over our heads. Two black birds in the middle of doing the Birdie Nasty thudded to the ground in front of us. With shocked little birdie faces they scrambled and flew up into the tree to continue their activity when THUD down on the ground again they go, falling out of the tree. They finally completed the act in the middle of the drive - fortunately for them no cars coming along.

LOL.

Reductress describes themselves this way:

The first and only satirical women’s magazine, Reductress was founded in 2013 by Beth Newell and Sarah Pappalardo. The mission of Reductress is to take on the outdated perspectives and condescending tone of popular women’s media, through the eyes of the funniest women in comedy today. Also, we want people to think we’re pretty.

PRESS:

“That the site registers as sincere to some readers could be seen as a mark of its skill, akin to Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, retweeting The Onion.” - NYTimes

As such, they have an article today, though they might not want to give Republicans any ideas here:

New Bill Requires Women Seeking Abortions to Paint Still Life of Foetus (Goes to Reductress, more at the link):

In the latest attempt to discourage women from seeking abortions, Republicans have introduced a new bill requiring women to first paint a still life oil portrait of the fetus before consulting with a physician.

If the bill passes, abortion seekers will need to obtain pre-approval from a special committee made up entirely of men over 70 years old, each one selected for the quality of their masculine horse art rather than their knowledge of the female reproductive system.

“We just want to make sure these women know exactly what they’re getting into,” says one sponsor of the bill. “And this is one painstaking and difficult way to do that.”

The new bill requires all fetal portraits to be “detailed” and “life-like”, although it notes that some impressionism will be tolerated if it appears to express feelings of regret.

Yeah, prices are off the scale for the nice stuff. But the advent of the internet has made it so sellers with even marginal ‘vintage’ stuff are pricing so-so guitars like they’re one-off prototypes.

Pretty much gone are the days when you can walk into a pawn shop and come out with a ‘find.’ The shop owners look at the internet, find the most expensive example of whatever they’re selling, and that price often becomes their baseline. It’s nuts.

I’ve only got a couple of high-end vintage guitars. Most of my other old stuff is strictly player’s grade, because I play them. Now I go looking for more oddball stuff or guitars that nobody is trying to buy nowadays. Maybe they’ll be worth a lot more one day, but probably not. But I buy ‘em to play ‘em anyway, so I’ll get my money’s worth out of them no matter what they end up reselling for.

This reminds me of one of the bands I was in. One of the guitarists would set up his amp and put his guitar on the stand first thing, and then we’d set up the p.a. and run all the cables. The bass player was laying out the p.a. speaker wires and for a moment was walking backwards. He bumped into the guitar. It fell over and the head snapped off. The bass player felt so bad about it he was crying and the guitarist was pissed, but he never made the mistake of setting up his guitar first thing again.

Since Curious Lurker told me “sqeee!” in her last comment to me in reference to a guinea pig photo (and commented she used to have guinea pigs), I will post a daily guinea pig photo until someone here tells me to quit.

So your “it’s almost Easter” guinea pig:

Speaking of finding deals I went to a pawn shop the other day, something I almost never do. There was a Wilton bench vise in a box marked 200. Normally it goes for about 600 new. SO I asked the guy if he’d take 175 for it. He obliged and grabbed the box. He opened it up and took it out. A super cheap crap vise was in there. The tip off should have been when he grabbed the box and hoisted it over his shoulder like it was nothing. Someone got robbed, glad it wasn’t me but I kinda felt bad for the dude.

Well, I had to duck out to the general store for a couple things, because it will be closed tomorrow.

The store used to be a combination Co-op and auto garage. The garage part is still empty, and the owner told me he would like to expand his business (since empty space really doesn’t make you a bunch of money).

I asked him what he thought he’d like to put in, and he deadpanned “a strip club.”

I asked if he thought a strip club would make any money in a town of 128, and he said sure, it would draw business from all around the area. He then asked if, since I am on the village board and would have to vote to license such a place, if I would vote for it.

“Sure, I used to be in the Navy, why not?” (I’m not sure if he really is interested in putting in a strip club, but hey, why not.)

My mother’s maternal grandmother (my great-grandmother) was born in 1896. She died in 1993.

On her ninetieth birthday my ex-wife asked her what she would like as a birthday present and she said “to live into the XXI Century.”

Grandma Bacon lived to 107. She passed away 17 days after her birthday in 2000.

Did you save copies of all of your communications? I wonder if it would be a good thing to gather up those and build a timeline on how out of control it all was. Then contact the new pros and let them know what you were up against and send them the timeline. Who knows, they may need a warning of who they are working with. They may already know.

I always found when working as a freelancer when you feel things are out of your control and the person you are working for says “no problem” there will be problems. Some people are never responsible for their own screw ups so they create issues they can pin on someone else.

Good luck. It’s a tough spot they put you in. I can see why you would want to defend yourself.

Was the “author” named Trump by any chance? /

New York Times Defends Hiring Extreme Climate Denier: Millions Agree with HIm

Amidst backlash and subscription cancellations for hiring extreme climate science denier, Bret Stephens, the New York Times offered a stunning defense: There are “millions of people who agree with him.”

With that ‘logic’, the Times could hire as a columnist former Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan David Duke — or a flat earther or someone who thinks vaccines pose a health hazard. After all, millions agree with them.

re: #225 Anymouse

My province is so provincial strip clubs that sell alcohol are illegal.

Jews and Muslims in Australia are protesting a plan by a cemetery to bury over a hundred pig corpses in their cemetery as “an experiment”:

smh.com.au

The pigs will be buried in the same section as Jewish and Muslim graves.

Fairfax Media can reveal that, in a contentious move at odds with numerous traditional religious customs, Rookwood Cemetery intends to accelerate the human decomposition process so more people can be laid to rest in the same plot.

Up to 120 pig corpses will be used as human substitutes and have individual plots at the same sacred site where more than a million people are buried. There the pig corpses will be exposed to compounds, additives and “a lot of different variables” that are designed to “speed up” the natural process below ground.

The paper notes that the Department of Defense (US) is not going to release information about the giant bomb dropped on Afghanistan and whether it achieved its aims or not.

They note the figures released on the number killed in the attack came from the Afghan government, not the Pentagon.

A Pentagon spokesman said its forces would not release an official statement on potential damage or casualties incurred from the strike, which was carried out in the Achin district of Nangahar province on Thursday night.

It was unclear why the Afghan government released casualty figures but US forces did not. For its part, the Islamic State-linked Amaq News Agency denied the bombing caused casualties among the militants, according to the SITE Intelligence Group. Islamic State offered no evidence to support its claim.

I can guess why: The White House doesn’t want to be embarrassed that the “mother of all bombs” was one mother of a bomb for military tactics.

Rural areas are much different than urban, especially if you’re a PoC. But how can you look at the world as it is, and be more comforted by the thought that somebody made it this way intentionally? Pediatric cancer, for example - how is it more comforting to think that some supernatural entity wants those kids to suffer and die, than to understand that our evolution balances cell growth and renewal between uncontrolled growth on the one hand, and inability to heal on the other, and even though it mainly works (because evolution works at the population level) it sometimes fails, one way or the other? In NEITHER case do you have any control, but at least in the latter it’s not at the whim of a capricious entity.

The entire fascination with the MOAB is easy to understand once one remembers the obsession the armed forces had in the 50s and 60s for putting nukes on virtually every weapons project they were working on. Nuclear missiles, nuclear rockets, nuclear mines, nuclear depth charges, etc, etc. If there was something that blew people or materiel up, the chiefs wanted their designers to figure out a way to fit a nuclear warhead into it. The MOAB and other thermobaric bombs just answer the problem with nukes, namely all that lovely radioactive fallout that pollutes the area for centuries after the explosion. Now if they can just figure out how to miniaturize such warheads, they’d get back to putting them on everything they could think of.

Theists don’t blame god for the bad things, they are a result of human failings. Their beliefs tell them the way to avoid being struck by horrible things is to believe in god with all their being and if they are struck by misfortune it’s god’s way of testing their faith and preparing them for life. They’ve had centuries of theologians analyzing and explaining how bad things happen and how to control it through belief in god.

I don’t know why they insist on concluding we are angry with or hate god. It’s impossible to be angry with something you don’t believe exists.
