Trump Horror, Day 90: Ted Nugent and Sarah Palin in the Oval Office

Gah
Politics • Views: 42,968

Yes, seriously. The guy who wrote songs like “Jailbait,” crapped in his pants to dodge the draft, appeared numerous times on the white supremacist radio show Political Cesspool, and called for President Obama and Hillary Clinton to be executed.

Here he is with his wife Shemane, posing with his hat on in the Oval Office with our disgusting so-called president. And yes, that’s Sarah Palin and Kid Rock, too.

The feeling of being stuck in a prolonged nightmare is getting worse every day.

UPDATE at 4/20/17 11:00:00 am by Charles Johnson

And here’s this gang of creepy far right goons smirking in front of the portrait of Hillary Clinton. Absolutely revolting.

It’s not often when Kid Rock is the least bothersome individual in an image.

It’s too late. The Oval Office and all the furniture and wall trimmings and window treatments are coated with Trump, Nugent & Palin jizz.

The next occupants will have to burn the place to the ground.

Wouldn’t be the first time that happened. Think we could interest the Brits in a encore performance?

Naaah, a Truman-era-style gut-out and rebuild will do….

Unless, of course, the Trumps decide to “upgrade” the decor, then I guess it’s time to party like it’s 1814….

Good question - do Presidential POS get to have their portraits up? Is there a Nixon portrait anywhere to be seen? This would be like the removal of iconography of King Tut’s father (Akhenaten) who changed the state religion, traditions, and the capital city and angered the priest class so much they killed him made his son Pharaoh (who then ordered his fathers statues destroyed).

Some of you were talking about what she’s wearing in the last thread. I couldn’t see the picture at the time, but when I see it now, it’s kind of like what I see women wear, some around her age, who want to dress MILF without being too showy. The best description would be “country casual” for women. If the mayor wore it, it would be because the town is really small.

This is just about what I expected. Crass vulgarianism, celebrity photo ops for folks whose celebrity has dwindled to ‘Celebrity Boxing’ levels, etc.

What I did NOT expect was how fast all of this would be normalized. I don’t know how we as a country come back from this.

The same culture police who complained about how certain things are different (Palin, Nugent, etc.) ignore that their preferred era (1950s) would have demanded that she wear a skirt and the hats off inside, let alone inside the White House.

Oh, and proper behavior and decorum throughout the visit. Not acting like 2 year olds in front of a picture of former First Lady Clinton.

I’m skeptical that Chaffetz is gonna drop out of office tomorrow, let alone in the near future. Because if he does, then it’s a lot more serious than just “I’m thinking about running for another office.” It’s “They’ve found the pile of dead hookers in my closet.”

It is said that Ronald Reagan never took off his suitcoat, no matter how hot it could be in the Oval Office. —because he respected the office that much! He was POTUS.

Trump Just Announced Where He’ll Spend The Summer, And It’s Not Mar-A-Lago

Trump’s frequent visits to Mar-a-Lago have been a constant source of consternation in Washington as Trump’s spending has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels. The good news is that, as summer approaches, Trump will no longer travel down to West Palm Beach to stay at his Florida resort. The bad news is that Trump will start traveling to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Mar-a-Lago is set to close for the summer, per usual, forcing the President to look to his other properties for his weekly vacation. Trump has faced calls from the left - and even the right - to conduct business at the White House, as opposed to pilfering millions of dollars in government funds to travel every weekend.

Bedminster residents are understandably anxious. Nick Strakhov, a resident of the town, said, “We’re kind of apprehensive, I guess you could say… if it gets to be tedious, we might start to complain.”

Man really doesn’t understand the difference between a POTUS and a KING.

I can’t stand the idea of wearing jeans to church.

In my family, we dressed up for church. Funny thing - when my older siblings were little, before I was even born, my Mom used to get the get the other 3 kids dressed and primped before starting on my second oldest brother. It didn’t matter. As soon as she was done with him, he looked like he’d slept in his clothes before rolling in the dirt.

It’s still like that. My oldest brother looks dressed to the nines in a T shirt and shorts. The second one wearing a tailored suit looks like a panhandler.

How much money is saved by allowing coal mines to resume polluting waterways? Sure, it might save the mine operators some amount of money not having to process waste before it leaves the mine, but what about the cost to everyone downstream who’ll have higher health costs from exposure to contaminants?

Shouldn’t you take off your f*cking hat when you go inside the White House? How about the Oval Office?

Disrespectful dopes.

I just want to go on record and say that I despise this particular piece of etiquette. I like wearing a hat. Taking it off means I end up walking around with hat head, and then I either have to walk around carrying my hat or set it somewhere where I will invariably forget it when I leave. Nobody has ever been able to give me a satisfactory explanation for why wearing a hat inside should be improper other than someone a long time ago said so.

A lot of etiquette makes sense, a lot of it just seems like rules people made up so when other people don’t follow them they can make them feel inferior.

re: #141 danarchy

Hats aren’t the essential article of clothing they once were but are still worn by both sexes for fashion and for function. Knowing when to remove a hat is as important as wearing the right hat for the occasion. If you were a medieval knight who failed to remove his helmet or lift his visor and identify himself the consequences could be fatal. Throughout history hats identified social standing and removing a hat was a gesture of respect. In the “old days,” men took off their hats in Christian churches, when they entered someone’s home, when greeting a boss, and always in the presence of a lady. Ladies were entirely exempt from “hat rules,” wearing them whenever and where ever they wished. While some of these customs are now historical footnotes, even in today’s casual culture men and women still remove their hats as a sign of respect. Cancer patients are exempt from hat rules. They may keep their hats or caps on at all times if they wish. Here’s when it’s fine to wear your hat and when it’s not:

As most things like this, I have a feeling there is a practical reason. Ceilings were rather low in olden times —one would have to take off a hat to stand-up straight?

One couldn’t be taller than the King —and a hat might make one so?

146
Birth Control Works  Apr 20, 2017 • 12:28:32pm
The gesture of removing ones hat, headdress or helmet dates back to ancient times — however, the exact date of origin is not known. Knights removed helmets in the presence of a king as a display of vulnerability and trust that the king would not kill them. Knights also removed helmets in church as an expression of security in one’s sanctuary. Knights displayed chivalry by removing headpieces in the presence of a lady. The practice of removing ones headdress evolved to represent a show of respect and courtesy in various situations — including the removal of the hat when entering a home, courtroom, restaurant or church.

Also, people almost always wore a head covering —especially in winter. Only the most wealthy could actually have a constructed hat. Other’s wore scarves or whatever. In harsh weather, most of the face would be covered —as everyone walked or rode horses and were out in the elements.

Take headcovering off might be akin to the full hijab today —People like to see other’s eyes.

While the knight thing removing their helmets or lifting their visors to identify themselves is interesting, it hardly seems applicable. I will certainly remove my ski mask when entering someones home. The hat thing still seems completely arbitrary, like if someone important a few hundred years ago had decided that taking your hat off was a sign of disrespect then we would have a completely opposite convention.

It isn’t like don’t speak with your mouth full which just makes sense convention or not.

This all boils down to “Someone is against me. I can’t be wrong, so there must be something wrong with them.” I think the term is ad hominem.

How many want to vacation in Hawaii?

How many want to vacation in Alabama?

That’s what I thought.

Depends on my vacation budget. If it’s over $5K per person per week then Hawaii, less than that and I might roll the dice on an Alabama adventure.

Let’s be honest.

Trump describes everything in those terms. Defense policy, foreign policy, marital relations, dinner.

It’s all the same snake oil peddler/L Ron Hubbard bullshit. It’s the BEST until it can’t be denied it isn’t…at which point, somebody else fucked up and he had nothing to do with it.

Know how they say success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan? Donald Trump could have Failure spring from his forehead, like Athena from Zeus…and 45 would immediately announce that clearly this shit was somebody else’s doing.

It will never be different. A best it will be mitigated by the slightly more savvy members of his cadre…but let’s face it, the “can’t fail, somebody* fucked us” is the operating mode of all the cultural huddles that control the GOP.

* for certain values of “somebody” that are people well outside the nepotism circle, and probably brown, liberal, foreign, and…most importantly…not at all involved in what went wrong.

Trump knows his supporters will believe whatever he tells them. He doesn’t seem to realize that being POTUS means he’s president of all of our citizens. He also seems to think that if he uses a lot of positive adjectives, he’s winning! He’s not, at least not in my case, because I know he the reason he uses so many positive adjectives is to hide his ignorance. He doesn’t know sh*t about sh*t, so he bullsh*ts on everything.

Mahu Picchu is simply awe inspiring. Train there is great as well.

One often overlooked gem is Arequipa. City is in the shadow of El Misti volcano, BEST (and that’s saying something) food in Peru and a couple of hours from Colca Canyon, the deepest canyon on the planet.

If you like driving i would even suggest renting a car and driving Lima to Nazca, then Arequipa, stopping of in Pisco (spend a day getting drunk) and Ica with the reset Oasis at Huacachina and the wildlife preserve at Paradise. Spend 4_5 days doing the journey, sooooo worth it.

The food is great, fair amount of regional variation (Peru is a big place) and any level of proficiency in the language is a big plus. If you can, get across the Andes to Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. The flight over the mountains is really spectacular. Once there, it’s like a different planet from Lima and the mountains. The Amazon is not as pretty as the mountains but is is awesome nevertheless, by far the most navigable river in the world. Ocean going ships (up to @ 2000 tons) can reach Iquitos by traveling completely across Brazil, more than 2000 miles, on the Amazon.

Well, let’s be fair here: That’s because the actual history and method of construction with these structures is known, whereas the more ancient civilizations’ secrets are lost to us. The Pyramids are a great example. Historians have proposed several plausible theories of construction, with plenty of supporting evidence, but because there’s no direct translated record that says, “Here is how we built it,” people still want to invoke aliens or woo.

The regional variation is what makes it. You will even find local variation in the bigger towns. Jungle food is the nuts. Even better than Iquitos is Peurto Maldonado, small town in Primary jungle. 5 hours on a boat to the most amazing wildlife like ultra rare lake otters, caiman, tree frogs a d 1000s of bird species.

Peru has 84 different ecosystems out of the worlds 103. Most biodiverse in the world

Funny thing is, the cathedral builders have one of the most sinister folkloric reps out there. Lots of tales about how they used magic, controlled devils, or made pacts with the Devil.

Honestly, I think Ancient Aliens people are the stub-end of a larger issue where the linear construct of “civilization” —to create a false sense of continuity and succession from Greece, to Rome, to various European kingdoms—doesn’t have conceptual room for a world that doesn’t function like a tech tree in a Civ game.

Nah, they are perfectly willing to ascribe megalithic structures in europe to aliens, the Carnac stones, the Bosnian pyramids that probably just natural formations etc. Anything we don’t have a written history of is fair game.

Edit: also a lot of those cathedrals and temples etc aren’t really megalithic. They uses smaller components and join them together with mortar or cement. They seem to get really hung up on the size of some of stones in the older structures some which can weigh up to 200 tons. While we still may not fully understand how they quarried and moved the largest of these, I think human ingenuity is just a little more likely than alien intervention.

The wheel as transportation component makes sense when there’s (1) flat, open land in general, (2) even minimal infrastructure to create roads and tracks.

Andean peoples and Mexican Basin people knew what wheels were—they used them as toys, and for pottery—but the fucking things didn’t make sense if you were hauling shit up and down the of the Andes, and weren’t that useful if you had the alternate of bearers that could move faster across mixed terrain.

I mean, every minute he’s talking about how great he would have been as an NFL owner or how if he wanted to, he could have been a great bass player, is a minute he’s not deciding to start a nuclear war in Asia

Laffer Curve, a theoretical construct that posits that when tax rates rise above a certain level, further increases will dampen economic activity so much that tax revenues will fall.

The axes are tax rates on the X, and tax revenues on the Y, and the curve is an inverted U. It’s an article of faith on the Right that we are ALWAYS on the far side of the Ymax, so that if we decrease X, we’ll get more Y.

The thing is, ever single time we decrease X, we decrease Y. Which means we’re on the OTHER side of the U.

I suppose I wasn’t thinking of the impact of income tax rates on disposable income, but still. It seems like, unless the adjustment is a significant percentage, the effect would be effectively invisible because of the overall proportion of disposable income to essential income in the tax brackets being adjusted.

re: #251 thedopefishlives

Seriously though, I’m trying to understand how a tax CUT will “pay for itself”. By definition, a tax cut reduces tax revenue. How is that going to be made up? The same number of people are paying taxes, just less of it.

The theory is that by cutting taxes people will spend the additional money that they get in their paychecks. This in turns, means more sales of goods, which, in turn, should mean the hiring of more workers, who would then be paying income taxes. Unfortunately, there comes a point of diminishing returns on this sort of thinking. If you’re making, say $300k a year, that extra money is just going to go into a bank account, or a 401k, or some other form of investment/savings that isn’t particularly likely to juice the economy. And for people further down the economic ladder, a lot of that sweet tax cut money that they get (if they get any) will likely go towards paying off outstanding debts, also something not likely to lead to the creation of more jobs.

Basically, it’s level 1 economic thinking. And in the most basic sense, it would be true. But we’ve reached a point in our economic development where level 1 thinking is mostly worthless.

The hilarious thing is that we know that with a top tax rate of 90%, or even 70%, the economy grew from WWII until the 1960s. I know there’s plenty of other factors involved, but high tax rates didn’t stop the economy from growing.

But a lack of revenues did cause massive debt to accumulate, from the 1980s onwards precisely because cutting revenue didn’t increase economic activities.

And we have been on the wrong side of the U since Reagan at least, if not Kennedy. I’m pretty sure the GOP has convinced itself that it’s actually the Laffer Right Triangle.

It seems like, unless the adjustment is a significant percentage, the effect would be effectively invisible because of the overall proportion of disposable income to essential income in the tax brackets being adjusted.

The thing is, we know from past experience what the effect of tax cuts is on economic activity. Give a poor man a tax cut, and he’ll spend it. All of it. Increasing economic activity - more goods sold, higher demand, etc.

Give a rich guy a tax cut. He’ll only spend part of it, if any. The rest, he’ll ‘invest’. But a whole lot of investment opportunities don’t really produce any more economic activity. They amount to - AT BEST - swapping pieces of ownership around. At worst? Simply legalized gambling.

So, if you want more economic activity, you give money to people who don’t have it, not people who do. Or you build shit that needs to be built, and that will enhance other economic activity. You don’t give more to people who already have too much and aren’t spending it.

Because that upper tax money wasn’t being spent by the wealthy. By definition, being so wealthy that you can save a whole lot of money means you’re not spending it, which isn’t helping the economy. By taxing it, it gets put back into the economy.

The truly wealthy only like the parts of capitalism where they get to fleece others. They don’t fully participate in it themselves.

Part of what tax-cut fetishists forget, or refuse to acknowledge, is that while money given to poorer people has higher velocity, they want to give the bulk of tax cuts to richer people, who usually sit on a lot of it. So right out of the gate the economic activity created by the cuts is absolutely minimal. A lot of our very richest American assholes like to have giant numbers attached to their bank accounts, so they can prove they are better than the schlub two mansions over.
I had seen a suggestion somewhere (can’t remember where) that the really high marginal rates we used to have did stimulate economic activity - business owners could take money out of the business for themselves, but they wouldn’t get to keep too much of it, so might as well keep it in the business, maybe open a new plant or whatever.

EDIT

Golly, remember back during the Bush Administration (the Younger)
when Conservative economists admitted for the first time since 1980 that no, in fact, there was no evidence that any tax cuts had ever paid for themselves, and indeed that no tax cut was ever likely to?

Good times.

[Embedded content]

The early 1960’s tax cuts did in fact pay for themselves, when the Kennedy admin lowered the top rate from 90% to 70%. When it meant that top earners could keep 3x as much.

Big earners whose money came in sporadic chunks (prizefighters, Vegas headliners) were motivated to work more. Big earners whose money was the continuing flow from grandpa’s work (Rockefellers, Fords) stopped putting all their money into tax-free foundations, they had more taxable income. And “regular” rich (doctors, lawyers, successful business owners) just had more to spend, and they spent it on American goods from American manufacturers (Europe and Asia were still rebuilding from WWII, not making a lot of exports). Which means American manufacturers had to raise wages, expand their workforce, more people paying income tax and in higher brackets.

It’s never worked since. The Laffer curve peaks somewhere around 60%.

Seriously though, I’m trying to understand how a tax CUT will “pay for itself”. By definition, a tax cut reduces tax revenue. How is that going to be made up? The same number of people are paying taxes, just less of it.
