Yes, seriously. The guy who wrote songs like “Jailbait,” crapped in his pants to dodge the draft, appeared numerous times on the white supremacist radio show Political Cesspool, and called for President Obama and Hillary Clinton to be executed.

In my family, we dressed up for church. Funny thing - when my older siblings were little, before I was even born, my Mom used to get the get the other 3 kids dressed and primped before starting on my second oldest brother. It didn’t matter. As soon as she was done with him, he looked like he’d slept in his clothes before rolling in the dirt.

It’s still like that. My oldest brother looks dressed to the nines in a T shirt and shorts. The second one wearing a tailored suit looks like a panhandler.

I just want to go on record and say that I despise this particular piece of etiquette. I like wearing a hat. Taking it off means I end up walking around with hat head, and then I either have to walk around carrying my hat or set it somewhere where I will invariably forget it when I leave. Nobody has ever been able to give me a satisfactory explanation for why wearing a hat inside should be improper other than someone a long time ago said so.

A lot of etiquette makes sense, a lot of it just seems like rules people made up so when other people don’t follow them they can make them feel inferior.

One often overlooked gem is Arequipa. City is in the shadow of El Misti volcano, BEST (and that’s saying something) food in Peru and a couple of hours from Colca Canyon, the deepest canyon on the planet.

If you like driving i would even suggest renting a car and driving Lima to Nazca, then Arequipa, stopping of in Pisco (spend a day getting drunk) and Ica with the reset Oasis at Huacachina and the wildlife preserve at Paradise. Spend 4_5 days doing the journey, sooooo worth it.

Sounds good. I love love Peruvian food. I need to brush up on my Spanish though. I still laugh at the time my SiL’s older sister posted photos in Colombia and I joked that she was La Patrona de Mar instead of La Patrona De Mal. I think the plan would be to fly to Lima and I’m not sure what from there. It would be a fun experience for my niece though. I think my brother would probably like to wait until his daughter is older so it’s something she’ll remember.

Sounds good. I love love Peruvian food. I need to brush up on my Spanish though. I still laugh at the time my SiL’s older sister posted photos in Colombia and I joked that she was La Patrona de Mar instead of La Patrona De Mal. I think the plan would be to fly to Lima and I’m not sure what from there. It would be a fun experience for my niece though. I think my brother would probably like to wait until his daughter is older so it’s something she’ll remember.

The food is great, fair amount of regional variation (Peru is a big place) and any level of proficiency in the language is a big plus. If you can, get across the Andes to Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon. The flight over the mountains is really spectacular. Once there, it’s like a different planet from Lima and the mountains. The Amazon is not as pretty as the mountains but is is awesome nevertheless, by far the most navigable river in the world. Ocean going ships (up to @ 2000 tons) can reach Iquitos by traveling completely across Brazil, more than 2000 miles, on the Amazon.

Well, let’s be fair here: That’s because the actual history and method of construction with these structures is known, whereas the more ancient civilizations’ secrets are lost to us. The Pyramids are a great example. Historians have proposed several plausible theories of construction, with plenty of supporting evidence, but because there’s no direct translated record that says, “Here is how we built it,” people still want to invoke aliens or woo.

Peru has 84 different ecosystems out of the worlds 103. Most biodiverse in the world

Nah, they are perfectly willing to ascribe megalithic structures in europe to aliens, the Carnac stones, the Bosnian pyramids that probably just natural formations etc. Anything we don’t have a written history of is fair game.

Edit: also a lot of those cathedrals and temples etc aren’t really megalithic. They uses smaller components and join them together with mortar or cement. They seem to get really hung up on the size of some of stones in the older structures some which can weigh up to 200 tons. While we still may not fully understand how they quarried and moved the largest of these, I think human ingenuity is just a little more likely than alien intervention.

Andean peoples and Mexican Basin people knew what wheels were—they used them as toys, and for pottery—but the fucking things didn’t make sense if you were hauling shit up and down the of the Andes, and weren’t that useful if you had the alternate of bearers that could move faster across mixed terrain.

The theory is that by cutting taxes people will spend the additional money that they get in their paychecks. This in turns, means more sales of goods, which, in turn, should mean the hiring of more workers, who would then be paying income taxes. Unfortunately, there comes a point of diminishing returns on this sort of thinking. If you’re making, say $300k a year, that extra money is just going to go into a bank account, or a 401k, or some other form of investment/savings that isn’t particularly likely to juice the economy. And for people further down the economic ladder, a lot of that sweet tax cut money that they get (if they get any) will likely go towards paying off outstanding debts, also something not likely to lead to the creation of more jobs.

Basically, it’s level 1 economic thinking. And in the most basic sense, it would be true. But we’ve reached a point in our economic development where level 1 thinking is mostly worthless.

The hilarious thing is that we know that with a top tax rate of 90%, or even 70%, the economy grew from WWII until the 1960s. I know there’s plenty of other factors involved, but high tax rates didn’t stop the economy from growing.

But a lack of revenues did cause massive debt to accumulate, from the 1980s onwards precisely because cutting revenue didn’t increase economic activities.

Give a rich guy a tax cut. He’ll only spend part of it, if any. The rest, he’ll ‘invest’. But a whole lot of investment opportunities don’t really produce any more economic activity. They amount to - AT BEST - swapping pieces of ownership around. At worst? Simply legalized gambling.

So, if you want more economic activity, you give money to people who don’t have it, not people who do. Or you build shit that needs to be built, and that will enhance other economic activity. You don’t give more to people who already have too much and aren’t spending it.

The hilarious thing is that we know that with a top tax rate of 90%, or even 70%, the economy grew from WWII until the 1960s. I know there’s plenty of other factors involved, but high tax rates didn’t stop the economy from growing.

But a lack of revenues did cause massive debt to accumulate, from the 1980s onwards precisely because cutting revenue didn’t increase economic activities.

Because that upper tax money wasn’t being spent by the wealthy. By definition, being so wealthy that you can save a whole lot of money means you’re not spending it, which isn’t helping the economy. By taxing it, it gets put back into the economy.

The truly wealthy only like the parts of capitalism where they get to fleece others. They don’t fully participate in it themselves.

I suppose I wasn’t thinking of the impact of income tax rates on disposable income, but still. It seems like, unless the adjustment is a significant percentage, the effect would be effectively invisible because of the overall proportion of disposable income to essential income in the tax brackets being adjusted.

Part of what tax-cut fetishists forget, or refuse to acknowledge, is that while money given to poorer people has higher velocity, they want to give the bulk of tax cuts to richer people, who usually sit on a lot of it. So right out of the gate the economic activity created by the cuts is absolutely minimal. A lot of our very richest American assholes like to have giant numbers attached to their bank accounts, so they can prove they are better than the schlub two mansions over.
I had seen a suggestion somewhere (can’t remember where) that the really high marginal rates we used to have did stimulate economic activity - business owners could take money out of the business for themselves, but they wouldn’t get to keep too much of it, so might as well keep it in the business, maybe open a new plant or whatever.

when Conservative economists admitted for the first time since 1980 that no, in fact, there was no evidence that any tax cuts had ever paid for themselves, and indeed that no tax cut was ever likely to?

The early 1960’s tax cuts did in fact pay for themselves, when the Kennedy admin lowered the top rate from 90% to 70%. When it meant that top earners could keep 3x as much.

Big earners whose money came in sporadic chunks (prizefighters, Vegas headliners) were motivated to work more. Big earners whose money was the continuing flow from grandpa’s work (Rockefellers, Fords) stopped putting all their money into tax-free foundations, they had more taxable income. And “regular” rich (doctors, lawyers, successful business owners) just had more to spend, and they spent it on American goods from American manufacturers (Europe and Asia were still rebuilding from WWII, not making a lot of exports). Which means American manufacturers had to raise wages, expand their workforce, more people paying income tax and in higher brackets.

It’s never worked since. The Laffer curve peaks somewhere around 60%.
