This Earth Day, April 22, Earth Day Network and the March for Science are co-organizing a rally and teach-in on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The day’s program will include speeches and trainings with scientists and civic organizers, musical performances, and a march through the streets of Washington, D.C. The crowd will gather at 8:00am, and the teach-in will begin at 09:00am.

Our so-called president Donald Trump has been devastating government science resources, but today his people had the nerve to release this dishonest statement:

We should remember that vigorous science depends not on ideology, but on a spirit of honest inquiry and robust debate.

The sheer hypocrisy of that sentence boggles the mind, as Trump is reportedly getting ready to withdraw the US from the Paris climate change accords for purely ideological reasons.

Still reading that old creation/evolution thread.

It seems that our esteemed host Mr. Johnson approved a person who had a name solely consisting of an apostrophe (‘), which caused quite a bit of vexation amongst those in the thread. (Some posited it was Charles Johnson himself, going in that way as a sock-puppet to downvote all the pro-creationism posts. They really were paranoid in 2008.)

I just came across a comment that reminded me of a discussion I had on Yahoo Answers in its religion section - I was accused of being gay because of the way I write. (I wasn’t aware there was a gay writing style.)

I have no science march to attend, so a creation/evolution debate works for me.

As for Felix Randomkitty, we’ll hear more on him Monday (assuming something drastic doesn’t happen this weekend). He is supposed to get that compounded steroid drug either today or Monday (depending on when the compounding pharmacy can get it to the vet). The veterinarian is concerned because one of the drugs in the compound can aggravate diabetes.

Someone in that thread (I am finally getting to the end of it) noted just how long it was (at this point, I am past comment 2,200) and thought that was possibly the longest thread ever written here. Another person noted that a thread about Terri Schaivo was far longer and more angst-ridden - I think I’ll leave that thread for another day.

It is interesting to read about the evolution of Little Green Footballs though. This was quite a different place many years ago. Mr. Johnson (regardless of his political positions during the long tenure of the site) has put an awful lot of work into this place to make it as easy to use as possible.

I’ve noted the same about Mr. Johnson. (Hence, I sent along some of my SorosBux to support the site. /s) While he may have held different political positions over the years, he has never to my knowledge attempted to support or oppose a position without evidence. Even in some of the old posts I’ve read here, his issues were about the truth as he saw it, and the evidence he could find to support his positions.

That is worthy of respect. And when Mr. Johnson found certain positions lacking, he changed his positions. That takes integrity.

Like the comment just up the thread about Mr. Trump’s lawyers arguing about free speech issues in the suit against him. Mr. Johnson cited the actual court filing, and those on Twitter now trying to claim Mr. Johnson was somehow lying about Mr. Trump are getting slagged, and rightfully so.

There were a TON of doggies at our march in Houston. The 12 year-old was in sheer bliss with the dogs. My 14 year old science and engineering geek was feeling the bliss of being around his tribe and marching with them.

Lots and lots of kids there, lots of families. My favorite was a little girl, about 8 or 9, dressed in all pink, including her cowboy boots. Her sign said, “It’s better to be a scientist than a princess.”

Crowd was very big. Not quite as large as the women’s march, but pretty close.

As someone posted earlier, not attending the marches does not mean a lack of support for our scientists at all. It’s just some people like to march and I happen to be one of them. We knew so, so many people were behind what we were saying.

Oh, and fuck Donald Trump. I was good the WHOLE MARCH. But now I can say it. He can kiss my red-headed uppity Texas liberal female COMPUTER SCIENTIST ass.

On my Android, if you email a picture it will ask you if you want to reduce the size and offers several options. So I email the pics to myself, reducing the size and then upload from my email.

Adds a few extra steps but no cost and simple.

My dad’s family only arrived here in the DC area when my grandfather got a promotion to the NLRB’s national field office but before that, he was like Hank Snow and had been everywhere man. Well not everywhere but he had been in many different cities.

mr. klys starts a new job on Monday. My book will be released on Tuesday. We just did a ~two week road trip around the desert. I have four more magnets for the national park/monument fridge collection.

Minnesota’s March for Science began at Cathedral Hill Park in St. Paul and culminated with a rally featuring impassioned pro-science speakers at the Minnesota State Capitol. The mood was peaceful and upbeat, with chants and signs, many of them whimsical in tone, expressing support for facts, education and science.

St. Paul police offered a crowd estimate of at least 10,000 people at about noon, and others poured in once the march arrived at the Capitol grounds.

In addition to the St. Paul rally, 12 others took place in Minnesota, from New Ulm to Grand Marais, in concert with a massive national march in Washington, D.C., and more than 500 others around the world.

Sums up Halperin pretty well (I don’t think of him as a “liberal journalist” at all.)

In December 2011, Halperin was listed as #1 in salon.com’s 2011 Hack List, his reporting described as “shallow and predictable” as well as “both fixated solely on the horse race and also uniquely bad at analyzing the horse race.”

The ripples look just like sand ripples in shallow water at the beach. Same principle, different medium (wind instead of water).

I was at the March for Science in Princeton, NJ. There was a threat of rain, fortunately it held off. It was well-attended. The MC at the rally said they had 3 times more people register then they had expected. Here are some of the pictures I took.

The exchanges between “our” Charles and Maddie remind me of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s exchange with Trump when she was at the WH. She reported that Trump asked her 11 times about a U.S./German trade agreement. She told him 10 times +1 that such an agreement isn’t possible. It was only at the 11th request, and her 11th time telling him that such an agreement was impossible that she got through to him that an agreement of the sort he was asking for was not possible. He then said he finally understood that any trade agreement with Germany would have to be with all EU nations. Dense isn’t the word to describe what Trump did. I believe that word is badgering/badgered. He badgered Chancellor Merkel in the hope that he could wear her down and get a “Yes” answer to his question. In Maddie’s case, I noticed that after she was forced to admit that “our” Charles had been right all along and she had been wrong, she suddenly changed her badgering into a “request for his assistance” in understanding what the Talking Yam had actually said. Such self-serving behavior and failure to accept that one is sometimes wrong is unseemly in an allegedly mature adult.

It’s not like service members being required to contribute is anything new.

From 1977 until 2008 in order to receive education benefits service member had to contribute personal funds.
Under Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) (‘77-‘85) we paid in $2700, with the US Gov adding $5400. Under VEAP certain enlistment contracts also qualified for a “kicker” education bonus of ~$12,000.
Under Montgomery GI Bill — Active Duty (MGIB) (‘85-‘08) service member contributed $100 for 12 months to receive ~$1500 of benefits per month for 36 months of full time schooling. Part time class attendance earned a reduced benefit.

I was there today in DC.

Firstly, a disclaimer of sorts: I don’t generally march for anything. Despite strong political stances, I don’t believe protests work; if they did, the Vietnam War would have ended 10 years earlier, among other things. I have also been disengaged from many things, including here, since the election, as I find it too painful to contemplate the horror that is American politics. In a broader sense, I don’t think there is a whole lot of hope for the immediate future, in that the influence of the far right fascists has only grown for the past 20 years, and will only continue to do so for the next generation. Sure, in 8 years there will be a new President, possibly even a Democrat, but that won’t do much to stop the increasing influence of the know-nothing American right. That will take generational change.

But I digress. As I said, I came from out of state to march in DC today. Although I don’t especially believe in the ability of marches to effect anything, I did not come alone, and I wanted those I came with to see that when times are truly dark, you can’t just sit at home and talk about it or post about it on Facebook. The only antidote for the evil that infects people from their TVs and their computers, twisting them into warped abominations that only superficially resemble their former selves, is community, and engagement, and human contact.

There were a lot of people. Probably not as much as there might have been without the constant rain, but a lot nonetheless. I saw only one group of three counterprotestors, and it’s hard to say exactly what they were about, but one had a Pizzagate sign and another had a MAGA hat on, so they were good enough to clearly identify themselves as morons at least. There were a heartening number of people from all walks of life and all ages, and they stayed despite the rain and mud.

Was it effective? No, but marches and protests don’t work, not unless they disrupt everyday life to a significant extent. But if everyone there at least got the sense that they’re not alone, that there are others out there equally horrified at the evil that has possessed their friends and neighbours, then it was worth it.

As a note, I saw a truly disturbing amount of young people, teenagers mostly, walking around DC in MAGA hats over the past few days. I don’t even see that in the very red state I came from. Just appalling.
