Regarding the Flynn dust-up. He got a security clearance in 2016 from the Obama admin. That would have been after Obama kicked him to the curb in 2014 and after his working with foreign connections.

So, did Obama national security miss it, or were they already familiar with his deception and allowed him to do the paperwork for the approval for continued security clearance? That would mean they knew he would lie on the forms, but it was not critical at the time because he had no government job.

If all that is true, that would hint to me they may have known he was going to work with Trump and they allowed Trump to take in a criminal. Info that could be used further…like now.

Am I getting too far in the weeds??? Some of this is suspect to me. I’m thinking I need more info and a complete timeline.

Charles, there’s something weird about this page that makes it behave different than the previous page in my browser, IE inside Invincea (at work, can’t change). On this page, I cannot click any of the buttons for updinging or replying to a comment, and the comment area isn’t resizable. I also don’t get any of the notifications that tell me there are new comments. And when I post this comment, I will be taken to the home page for the site.

I don’t have this issue in the previous thread.

I’ve seen this happen before, but today was the first time I noticed that it’s different between pages.

That’s pretty easy. A mild version of the story runs like this:

Obama gets in office in 2008 and is confronted with the reality that the US is a plutocracy and that actually doing something about the big banks is difficult/impossible. So nothing much is done, relatively weak reforms are passed through Congress, and Obama will personally do well out of the whole affair, both in prior Wall Street campaign donations and likely future rewards on the speaking circuit.

The more lurid and ridiculous versions of this story paint Obama as a mustache-twirling villain indistinguishable from a Republican.

Whether or not one believes in any version of this story, the underlying issue of opposing US plutocracy is real, and one of the weaknesses of the Democratic party is the lack of a decent answer to this problem.

Personally I don’t think Obama is a sell-out on the banks issue, but the lack of hearings, investigations and prosecutions vs. the banks makes this more of an act of faith than it should be.

I agree that the idea that economic cures will fix everything is garbage.

However, the fact remains that the political structure of the US is that of a plutocracy rapidly consolidating its power. Economically, globalization and automation proceed apace, and just about everyone who has to work for a living is getting squeezed by that with no end in sight.

What’s the Democratic party plan for dealing with plutocracy, globalization and automation? IMO there needs to be at least one big bold proposal (e.g., living wage) to get people’s interest — small tweaks to the current system can rightly be dismissed as inadequate on their face.

Jane Sanders, wife of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., overstated donation amounts in a bank application for a $6.7 million loan the college used to purchase a prime 33-acre property on Lake Champlain in 2010.

She told People’s United Bank in 2010 that the college had $2.6 million in pledged donations to support the purchase of the former Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington property.

The college, however, received only $676,000 in actual donations from 2010 through 2014, according to figures provided by Burlington College.

Two people whose pledges are listed as confirmed in the loan agreement told VTDigger that their personal financial records show their pledges were overstated. Neither was aware the pledges were used to secure the loan.

Jane Sanders did not respond to a request for comment Thursday asking whether she was subpoenaed or otherwise contacted by the FBI or the U.S. attorney in relation to her time as president of the college.

1. The banking sector doesn’t bare sole responsibility for the crash
2. Not all institutions included in the banking sector were equally culpable for the crash
3. I guarantee you that Obama is going to accept a lot of money in speaking fees from the banking industry and that said industry is also going to be a big contributor to his presidential library, his charitable efforts and his efforts to combat voter disenfranchisement.

That’d also be in the top tax rate and unless he donates the money to charitable causes, it’ll get taxed at the top tax rate, which is… 39.6%.

Now compare that with Trump and his tax plan. Trump’s pushing to cut his taxes by more than half - his tax plan specifically would reduce his passthrough income by more than half; eliminate the AMT, and the estate tax.

So, which one do you think people should get upset about.

Oh, a few folks are complaining Obama that he shouldn’t speak to banks or certain groups, but again what is he doing with the money is his own business.

We don’t hear much of GWB and the speeches he gives. And he gives plenty of speeches and makes quite a bit of coin in the process. Yeah, we’re on Obama double standard time again.

People seriously need to recalibrate their outrage for where it actually matters, and on what matters.

Told them I was a registered voter in his district, the town I live in, and urged him to vote NO on the upcoming (?) vote on AHCA 2.0 because it’ll remove the preexisting conditions stipulation with insurance companies.

One of the things that disturbed me most about the 2016 election results was the overwhelming feeling that I should have seen it coming but didn’t. Granted, hindsight 20/20 and all that, but nonetheless, there were plenty of signs that perhaps we all either played down or denied altogether (by “we” I mean most of those hoping for a Clinton win and thinking no way would enough Americans be dumb/racist/awful enough to vote trump)

Many people say (and some of them, especially both-siderists, add a hefty dose of condescending smugness to the argument) that you have to listen to people you disagree with to avoid getting caught in your own echo-chamber (hence the ad nauseam parade of trump-supporter puff pieces).

That’s true to a point - I have no need to “listen” to reactionary wingnuts, GOPers, and the hardcore deplorables because I’m already familiar with the lies, gaslighting, and outright denial of reality. There’s nothing new to learn and no hope whatsoever of changing their minds.

However, the Bernie-or-Bust crowd is a different story. I started reading a lot of material from them post November, mainly as a result…

So what’s my point? Again, there’s no hope of changing the deplorable/GOP base, so don’t even try. But the BoBers are in a much better position to:

a) depress morale among those likely to vote Dem
b) perpetuate “they’re all bad so why bother” voter apathy
c) come up with some arguments that, unlike those of GOPers, actually are based in reality

This is why I feel it’s important to be aware of what they’re saying and figure out how to address the concerns that are legitimate and refute the ones that aren’t.

That said, here’s a piece I read today that I know you’re all going to hate, but like I said above, it’s important to be aware of this mindset because failure to properly address it could jeopardize any chance of a Democratic comeback (you know how Charles always pushes back against extremists in the face of “you should ignore them and not give them attention” protests? It’s like being lectured again about how we have to understand the poor Trump voters, except these are the folks who were too pure to vote for Hillary so instead we got Trump.

I’d like to see some kind of economic reform that leads to a system where these obscene accumulations of wealth and power don’t form in the first place. I can’t even imagine what this would be like, or how we could get from here to there politically.

But I am sure the present system cannot continue along a path of ‘business as usual’ where that is ever-increasing concentration of wealth and power for the rulers.

Have bankers ever been considered totally on the up and up? I can’t say I ever saw them that way.

I always saw them as degrees of necessary evil. The small town banks were all gobbled up by regional banks and many of them have been gobbled up by larger national banks. So it has gone from the people you know to people you will never see.

And like all big business the larger they get the more they tend to gloss over the little guy individual for the big hit.

I guess when it comes to money I really have a level of distrust as a default setting.

Actually, in an abstract sense, I’m wondering if that’s true any more.

Human history has always been one of concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few, and the societal controls that allow the powerful to keep their power. It used to be religion, slavery, then feudalism, and so forth. The cycle of history has always been one of increasing concentration of power until there is a correction, a revolution of sorts, or an enlightenment such as the Renaissance.

But we’re at a point in history where the societal controls are reaching a point where no such correction may be possible. The ease and availability of mass media allows essentially your entire populace to become easily controlled with bread and circuses, especially the circuses. Furthermore, the disparity of force now wielded by the powerful (ie. a modern army is so far advanced beyond the capability of the populace to revolt) makes any sort of revolution essentially impossible.

I’m still registered R but the last R presidential ballot I cast was for George H in 1992. The last R candidate I voted for was either Arlen Spector or a local Philly guy Thatcher Longstreth around 2004 ish. I stay registered in the off chance a guy like Pat Toomey gets a primary challenger I could vote for.

My wife and I were out when the veterinarian called. She wanted us to call right back, but we did not get home until well after the clinic was closed.

She is once again concerned for Felix’s condition, and will call first thing in the morning, according to the message. (She knows I sleep mostly in the day and reserves calls for the late afternoon, so if she says she will call first thing in the morning I expect that is not good.)

My wife and I have discussed the issue about our eight-year-old cat this evening. We have arrived at the opinion that perhaps we are asking the veterinarian involved in his care the wrong question.

Perhaps the question should be, “If this was your beloved pet, with your medical knowledge, what would you do?”

That brought back memories. Twenty-eight years ago we lost our little Katie shortly after birth, but we didn’t have much time to prepare for it. The only thing that kept me sane then was the knowledge that her eyes gave someone sight. Organ donation is a precious gift for all concerned.

Bless you for being able to make that decision in what I’m sure was an immense time of grief.

When one of my best friends died in a car crash, they were able to donate her corneas and knowing that she still lives on in some small way helps.

It really isn’t good for my sleep habits to check in here at night. I go to sleep angry; then I wake up at 3AM knowing that the cards were stacked against me economically and that now another deck of cards has been added to the stack. I openly give the finger to [the back windows of] the many cars with Trump stickers around this town. Maybe nothing will happen, but I doubt it. The “trickle-down” assholes are out in full force.

Condemned folks gasping for air and writhing in pain for up to an hour while the injection is taking place is not uncommon. It’s torturing the condemned to death, pure and simple. A clear violation of the Eighth Amendment.

Well, this Korea mess goes back to yesterday. dtrump managed to round up all his Senate Serfs and have them meet at his castle. dtrump and his staff gave the serfs all the lowdown on the “Korea Problem”. Since dtrump isn’t the sharpest tack in the box, he now probably believes just because he met with the Senate Serfs he now has permission to do what he wants with the 2 Korea’s. You know, that “advise” stuff.

Oh, and now it looks like a chance for USA Inc to make a profit.

I’m not old enough to have that excuse. The last time I voted (R) in a presidential election was in 2000. At least that was in CA where this error didn’t matter.

the last time I voted R was Dole ‘96. The cynical and depraved thirst for power in evidence during the Clinton impeachment put me off the R party forever.
I’ve always been a registered Independent/no party person.

Shiplord Kirel has offered his death penalty fix here a number of times, and I happen to think it’s a good idea. Each member of the jury and the judge hold a lanyard which is attached to a guillotine blade. Every lanyard must be pulled or the condemned lives and serves a life sentence for their crimes.

There are people who would genuinely suffer without access to those drugs. Anymouse has certainly talked about his medication.

There aren’t good answers here, beyond the obvious of prosecuting officials who use backdoor sources, but I’m not sure under what grounds you’d be able to do so or if you could find a prosecutor willing to do so in those states. (It shouldn’t be difficult but I suspect it would be.)

At the very beginning of Barack Obama’s presidency, several states used my epilepsy medication (Phenobarbital) as an execution drug.

The EU responded by banning its manufacturer (Lundbeck, in Denmark) from selling the medication to the USA.

The medication is used for a few tens of thousands of us for whom no other drug will work, and widely used to stop a condition called status epilepticus (continuous, fatal seizures) brought on by epilepsy, head injury, diseases, &c.

President Obama made a humanitarian appeal to the EU to reconsider, and the EU responded by requiring anyone living in a death penalty state to sign an affidavit stating they would not sell or give the drug to state prisons or other such facilities.

I suspect that with the drying up of death penalty drugs, conservative states will again turn to Phenobarbital. It has a proven track record with the Nazis in Aktion T4, which is part of the reason they used it for the death penalty. The therapeutic dosage is very close to the lethal dosage.

Romantic Heretic had an even better idea:

Should the death penalty be returned to Canada I will lobby to have the method of execution be a pistol bullet in the back of the head and that the position of executioner be filled by conscription. Any person eligible to vote could receive a letter that reads, “On this date you will report to this prison by this time where you will execute this person.”

The bullet is because it’s messy and personal so people can’t kid themselves about what they’ve done.

Conscription is so that people have to do their own killing. No hiding behind other people.

I was diagnosed with clinical depression in 1995 and have been on several anti-depressants since then. My latest med is Pristiq. I had a doctor’s appointment today and informed my him that the Pristiq is no longer working and neither is the Lunesta he prescribed to help me get some much-needed rest. He gave me about a month’s worth of samples of Trintellix to try. I’m going to try it, and see if it helps. If it doesn’t, I don’t know what my next step will be in dealing with my depression. I do know, though, that it got worse after Trump was elected POTUS. On a conscious level, I try not to worry about the next dumb thing he will say/do, but I know at a subconscious level, the answer to that question never really leaves my mind. I’m trying to complete the remodeling on my home. I’ve ordered new furnishings, blinds, lamps, and other things, but I don’t have the motivation to hang new curtains, put new mattresses in place, hang new mirrors, put up a new door-sized storage rack, a new rack for pots and pans and do lots and lots of other things that sorely need doing. After I complete these tasks, I need to use my Bissell to clean my tile floors in different areas of the house. I bought the machine over a year ago, and it’s still in the box. I’ve been doing the floors using a spin mop system, but I can’t keep doing that because of back and hip problems.

Not far from the truth. High profile executions in Texas regularly attract celebratory mobs who get as close to the prison as possible to hoot, screech, wave frying pans (a legacy of electric chair times), and hold up various disgusting signs.
