The New Yorker: How Trump Could Get Fired

It may not be impossible
Politics • Views: 35,707
Illustration by Ben Wiseman/The New Yorker

Removing Donald Trump from office may seem like a long shot, but then nothing about the Trump Horror is normal and long shots seem to be coming true every day. Evan Osnos has a thoughtful piece at The New Yorker on this subject that I highly recommend, titled: How Trump Could Get Fired.

Trump’s approval rating is forty per cent—the lowest of any newly elected President since Gallup started measuring it. Even before Trump entered the White House, the F.B.I. and four congressional committees were investigating potential collusion between his associates and the Russian government. Since then, Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, have become senior White House officials, prompting intense criticism over potential conflicts of interest involving their private businesses. Between October and March, the U.S. Office of Government Ethics received more than thirty-nine thousand public inquiries and complaints, an increase of five thousand per cent over the same period at the start of the Obama Administration. Nobody occupies the White House without criticism, but Trump is besieged by doubts of a different order, centering on the overt, specific, and, at times, bipartisan discussion of whether he will be engulfed by any one of myriad problems before he has completed even one term in office—and, if he is, how he might be removed.

Demented, deranged, or just stupid, Trump is giving the GOP everything they’ve wanted since the implementation of the income tax. They’re never going to kill this golden goose.

Trump will be impeached and removed from office but not until Republican tax cuts are passed to benefit the 0.1% most of all, Obamacare riddled with bullets and left for dead, and a Stupid wall started that will never be finished….within 2 1/2 years the USA will be in a Recession- the last solid Recession we had was the post-Bush debacle (yes, acerbated by tax cuts once again) ad we are due for one. But Trump’s Base has no tolerance for a Recession. They expect magic Republican unicorn economic theory, direct JEEZUS intervention, and magical fairy tax cuts to deliver eternal economic utopia. They have no built-in coping mechanism to deal with a strong Recession caused by a Republican/Trump dominated government. There will be pitchforks and torches in the streets by 2020.

In short, Trump will be dragged from his office, but not before a whole shitload of pain is delivered to the very sector of our population that voted him into office in the first place.

From the article up top:

I asked Jerry Taylor, the president of the Niskanen Center, a libertarian think tank, if he had ever seen so much skepticism so early in a Presidency. “No, nobody has,” he said. “But we’ve never lived in a Third World banana republic. I don’t mean that gratuitously. I mean the reality is he is governing as if he is the President of a Third World country: power is held by family and incompetent loyalists whose main calling card is the fact that Donald Trump can trust them, not whether they have any expertise.”

Interestingly enough, the Niskanen Center posted a libertarian case for Sanders during the primaries by Will Wilkerson. And reading some of their stuff, they don’t actually appear to be glibertarians like, say, Heritage. For example, they’ve an article arguing that it’s the quality of government, not the size of government that is best in determining liberty. And another arguing for an expansion of the earned income tax credit as, basically, wage subsidies.

I might have to check these guys out a bit more, but they seem like my kind of libertarians.

Only way the Senate will pass the bill is if McConnell nukes the filibuster into dust. There’s no fucking way that this bill can pass in present form and any bill that could win 60 votes would be DOA when it was sent back to the House.

I think the plan is to use the reconciliation process to pass it so it only needs 51. I think it will still be a tough sell.

Also depending on what changes they made to get it passed it may no longer be eligible for reconciliation.

And on cue the Sanders hacks i know are going we should have nominated Bernie. Really that’s your fucking response to this shit show? They may be as bad as the right IMO since they’d rather bitch about how we didn’t nominate someone who didn’t receive a majority of the vote in our primary than actually be mad at what happened today. Fuck the right and far left both with the same nail. You have a right to be disappointed but you don’t have any right to hold our party hostage over a man who’s too much of a coward to even join it.

Only the fucking GOP would cheer and party about the passage of a bill that deprives millions of health care coverage and ruins the coverage for everyone with employer based plans because it weakens/eliminates protections for preexisting conditions.

The GOP will forever be known as a party that ruined health care for ALL Americans.

No wait. Check that - the GOP excluded Congress from their hateful/spiteful/deplorable fuckery.

Now, it’s on to the Senate, and no doubt McConnell will feel the heat to deliver this crap sandwich on a platter for Trump to sign.

I don’t trust any of the GOP to do the right thing here. They’ve already proven that they’re willing to ignore every iota of common sense to push for the massive tax cuts for their sugar daddies/corporate donors/dark money PACs.

I also don’t trust voters to fix this in the midterms. They’ve already shown that they’re willing to accept the Trump con.

No, Ivanka is just out of touch with 99.99% of most people’s reality. Donald is something much worse. Something much more dangerous.

He is an Empty Vessel into which any advice or information can be poured into by the right hands. The people that can pour information into this empty vessel are the same sort of people who Donald identifies as with his own father- wealthy, absolutist, and unconcerned with the reality of the 99.99%… And most important of all, those willing to pour unending and flattering compliments in his direction with no sense of will for correction for terrible behavior.

Also, I think it inaccurate to say this bill is only 1/3 of the way to being passed. Trump signing it is certain, so that makes it 2/3 procedurally. The Senate is the only obstacle, but will Senate Republicans really be able to resist the temptation of this giant tax cut for the rich?

Passing this with 51 GOP votes in the Senate under reconciliation seems to be a distinct possibility. An unfavorable CBO score can be evaded by overruling the Senate parliamentarian on a party-line vote. This way McConnell could pass this abomination without getting rid of the legislative filibuster.

Not a single group is supporting any of this. And no one should support this without knowing what it would cost - the CBO/JCT have not have a chance to score the plan.

That’s on purpose.

Couple of possibilities - there are some moderates in the GOP Senate caucus who told McConnell that they’re a “no” vote without the CBO scoring; they don’t actually have the votes for it and are using this as a means of buying time to whip the votes; or, as I believe someone mentioned above, they need the CBO score for a reconciliation ruling from the parliamentarian. Also, a very real possibility is that the GOP Senate caucus wants nothing to do with this bill and are hoping to distract Trump and the Freedom Caucus with something bright and shiny.

Republican questions.

The big flaw in thinking is that if we don’t pay taxes on other people’s health care we’re not paying for it. It’s estimated that, because Texas refuses to cover the 28% uninsured, that each of us pays an additional $1000 per year for our insurance to cover their ER visits and other losses hospitals absorb.

This country is a fundamentally hateful, spiteful, and hostile place. That’s what the last 8-9 years have taught me. And attempts to change that and make things better will bring the full force of that hate and spite down upon your head and make you out to be history’s greatest demon ever, and make people run away all the faster because “fuck you, that’s why”.

re: #204 Birth Control Works

The modern nomination process started in 1960, or so. Since then, there has been, at most 2 women who have run for the presidency that had a legitimate shot at the nomination, Liddy Dole in 2000 (she dropped out of the GOP race in October 1999 when the big money started coalescing around GWB), and Hillary Clinton in 2008 and 2016. Part of the problem is that it’s hard to get to the point where you’re a viable presidential candidate, man or woman. Traditionally (ie: pre-Trump), presidents served as governors or senators (or both) or held high ranking administrative positions within the government. There’s some self-selection in the fact that more women who have held these types of positions haven’t run for president (the same could be said for men who have held these positions). There’s also what I’d call the Jackie Robinson factor - the first person to break a barrier has to be special (there were plenty of better ball players in the Negro Leagues when Robinson was signed by the Dodgers); it’s not fair, but that typically seems to be the case in a lot of things like this.

Or you can blame it on baby boomers, since Clinton won voters under the age of 45 (so most of Gen-X and Millennials).

Not sure what PLL means, but fuck it. I just don’t see how this gets any fucking better. We’ve seen the infinite capacity of the electorate to blame Dems, Liberals, PoCs, women, minorities, anything but white conservatives with massively consolidated power for things like this, even when they get directly hurt by these policies, even when those policies prove destructive and fatal. And we’ve seen near infinite capacity for the current crop of the GOP to take advantage of that and do whatever the fuck they want anyways because they know their seat probably won’t be at risk. So I can’t see a way this doesn’t pass the Senate, and this was possibly our best shot at stopping one of Trump’s key wants.

And we’ve already seen the media crowing for Trump’s victory, all the while endlessly wringing about how horrible and superevil Hillary, Obama, etc. are because of things they’ve given the GOP endless passes on, time and time again.

I’m ping-ponging between wanting to scream and wanting to cry endlessly because I feel surrounded by futility, and I can’t disconnect from it because this mess has soaked into almost every aspect of American life at this point.

You’re right of course. There were much more reactionary times in history. We’re just in the immediate reaction phase to seeing critical parts of our society temporarily collapse.

And I get that. It sucks. I am not exactly a font of optimism. But what I also know is that wallowing in despair is not productive. That if all you do is sit and nurse the outrage and the hate GUESS WHAT that is what you feel. We know this. That’s what Fox does. And how the fuck does that improve anyone’s life? It doesn’t. It’s not healthy.

So I am pushing for critical thinking, and building resiliency, and self-care, because this is going to be a long fight and if you burn out now you’re going to be useless down the road. Take a day and cope if you need to but this fight isn’t over. Treating it like it is guarantees a loss though.

Nothing constructive needs to be done today. We’ll still exist tomorrow to be productive and constructive.

No, need to run to the grocery store. Making egg muffins for the freezer, along with marinara sauce, meatloaf, and homemade chorizo batches.

If they believe in God, do you want them repenting on their deathbed?

Repenting won’t make heaven become something that actually exists, so yes, it would be good if they admit they were wrong as they’re dying so others can learn from their mistake.

I want them to, at the very last minute, feel the horrible, sickening dread that maybe they’re hellbound after all.

(though since I personally don’t believe in an afterlife, I prefer to root for poetic justice on earth - they die lonely, broke, in pain and humiliation, all on account of their own disgusting actions coming home to roost)

For the record, I made the PLL comparison because there’s been a pattern of posts like that over the past few weeks. I don’t mind a single post blowing off steam at all and in fact think that’s healthy. It’s when I see no change except for the worse that it’s a concern. I agree. But when people are backed up and desperate bad things happen.

Sure we should all do what is right, but are Republicans doing right by us as ordinary Americans?

No.

And so we get these threats.

It is going to get ugly. I bet some of it starts tonight in many major cities. This weekend will probably see big demonstrations and they will be way more heated.

Buckle up. And keep on your toes. Bumpy road ahead.

I had said in the past that the road we’re on with these reactionaries is shaping up to be something historically catastrophic. Mainly because I didn’t and don’t want it to happen.

The GOP’s behavior this afternoon is a grotesque taunting and abuse of power in the worst way possible. It’s like the schoolyard bully who keeps attacking over and over again because they doubt anyone would have the strength or will to stand up to them.

If I cared about these thugs (which I don’t), I would be pleading for them to shut up and lay low. Instead they are doing the opposite and just asking for trouble, so drunk with power that they don’t realize the consequences of their actions.

re: #258 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Christ, I know this isn’t helpful. I know it’s wankery, but I need some catharsis, and christ, I don’t know, someone to help talk me off the ledge too.

Considering I have been dealing with legit depression that I’ve been struggling to keep a cap on that I’ve yet been able to properly see anyone for due to repeated runarounds with the state Medicaid offices, and the fact that this will make it even further impossible to afford, I’m struggling to find outlets to vent myself on that. And I don’t trust myself whatsoever not to fuck something up if I tried to volunteer on anything.

Not going to lie, today is awful. It sucks.

But unless you’re giving up, take that anger and do something. Call your rep. Call your Senator. Find out when your local town hall is going to be and make plans to be there. Contact your local Indivisible group and find out how you can get involved.

Dig in. Volunteer. Work on pushing back.

I don’t like making them but I never dread it like i used to. But yeah I feel more friendly and outgoing than I was in teh past.

Thailand:

“…Thailand introduced universal coverage (UC) reforms in 2001, becoming one of only a handful of lower-middle income countries to do so. Means-tested health care for low income households was replaced by a new and more comprehensive insurance scheme, originally known as the 30 baht project, in line with the small co-payment charged for treatment.
………
In 2009, annual spending on health care amounted to 345 international dollars per person in purchasing power parity (PPP). Total expenditures represented about 4.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).”

30 baht is 87¢.

Well such a day. Not a surprise at all, both the passing of the bill and the evil fuckers polishing their little woodies over their “success”. Which it isn’t since the Senate is round filing it in a stall to avoid the catastrophic backlash to the party it would certainly engender. They’re going to write their own bill? That should take a couple of years at least, assuming we ever hear about it again.

Thus, I will not feel rage or despair or desperation (I’m one of those 24 million) or any of those negative things that would trash my day. Not one day will I give to these assholes in sadness or defeat. I will enjoy the gratification of having ALL my laundry done (that’s a BFD for me), cook some delicious food, hang outside on this beautiful day with the dogs, and spend my evening with yarn, wine, and opera.

So there.

It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen in our country before.

In my 60+ years this period can only be compared to the Vietnam era politically. But this one seems worse because we aren’t fighting over a foreign issue, we are fighting over a domestic one. Actually a lot of issues. And sadly, that has only happened with the U.S. Civil War.

Agreed…but I’m suggesting when talking about them in the collective we go with:

Republicans are a hateful, selfish, horrible gang.

Cult might even be sympathetic to a degree. Gang is a group with a nasty purpose and everyone understands the connotation.

Jim Jones got his cult to murder a congressmen and an NBC reporter. They could have been capable of much worse. Same with Manson.

The GOP straddles the line between cult, gang and mental illness. For all the time they painted liberalism as “a mental disorder,” they sure act and behave as if they are legitimately unstable. Now it’s out in the open for anyone without blinders on to see.

Glen Grothman.

I can’t follow all states politics, but wasn’t Wisconsin a pretty liberal state at one time???

The state even had a freakin’ early Playboy Club in Lake Geneva. And I think I remember people talking about the liberalness of the state, with the colleges and Wisconsin, etc.

When did it start becoming so conservative, or is it not and just pissed off people?

That would seem to be inconsistent, since insurance companies are serious money makers, and libertarians typically worship that.

Grothman is the epitome of a safe district dipshit Republican. Wisconsin is split, pretty much like every other state. The UW system has been under attack from Walker and the WisGoP but the universities are for the most part liberal, or in blue/purple cities. Especially Madison(my son is a freshman).

The rural area is fed their news through Fox and right-wing radio. And, there is a whole lot of rural in Wisconsin.

When the CBO score comes out, the narrative will immediately shift to “House Republican bill to strip 24,000,000 of health insurance, raise premiums by….” It will be the top story.

Then the Senate will reject the bill, as they already have, and write their own. We’ll see what they come up with.

So, House Republicans just stepped in a pile of flaming shit. The Senate doesn’t want their bill and the top story will be what a crap bill it is. Then we’ll get to, “Did Republicans rush into X for optics for President Trump?”

So there.

Yeah, I’m part of the 24 million too. Scratching and clawing my way to being able to go to Medicare in two years, if it is still there and affordable for the secondary coverage.

Sigh.

That shows a faith in the ability of Senate Republicans to follow an honest process that I don’t have.

As I understand it, they can overrule the Senate parliamentarian on whether or not this can be done on reconciliation with a simple majority vote. So they can jam this budget-buster through on reconciliation if they want to.

I heard a guy, I believe was on Lawrence last night, that said when you look into this version it really will be more than 24,000,000. He said it needed to be studied as at that time of night he had just seen the review and said the numbers will grow.

And just as Lawhawk pointed out earlier, the big surprise in the package is it is going to screw a lot of people that have employment based insurance. The preexisting conditions is going to cause big problems for medium to small businesses as the rates will be so high they will either refuse to cover you or the employee is going to have to pay more. And the coverage will still suck.

A lot of people are thinking this is just on the ‘free loaders” covered by Obamacare.

Joke will be on them as they discover the freeloaders will be the insurance companies and the rich.

Ka-Boom!!!

Trump: Great! Does it cover more people, with lower premiums and less out of pocket, and better care for everyone?

Trump: Great! Let’s pass it!

CBO: This bill will fuck millions of people!

HFC: This doesn’t fuck enough people hard enough!!

Ryan: Okay, let’s fuck those people, then.

Moderates: Now it fucks too many people too hard!

Trump and Ryan: Aw, fuck it. We give up.

Ryan: We made it EVEN LESS like what you promised!

Trump: Great! Let’s pass it!

HFC: This bill fucks lots and lots of people, especially poor and sick people! FINALLY, something we can vote for!

Moderates: But now it REALLY fucks too many people!

Ryan: Okay, what if we set aside far too little money as a pretense that we care?

Moderates: Yeah, that’ll do it. Let’s vote!
