As the Earth warms, more permafrost will melt. Under normal circumstances, superficial permafrost layers about 50cm deep melt every summer. But now global warming is gradually exposing older permafrost layers.

Frozen permafrost soil is the perfect place for bacteria to remain alive for very long periods of time, perhaps as long as a million years. That means melting ice could potentially open a Pandora’s box of diseases.

…and what perfect timing for the whole take-away-people’s-healthcare debate -_-

The ROVs didn’t spend much time at the bottom today, so they’re going through the water… the following thing is related to those blob-like creatures on the bottom, but it floats. Here it has opened up what looks like a parachute to float in the water. The coil at the bottom is its guts. The gangly mess in the middle is apparently a caught jelly-fish it is eating:

Here’s the same thing a few seconds later, now the large umbrella like flesh is flapped down, probably to push itself up. The little red thing on the side is some sort of crustacean hitch-hiking (in the previous image it looked like it was bright because it was reflecting the lights):

Naturally the usual stooges and dupes are squawking that the Russian script is a false flag planted by the Jews, er the CIA, NSA, freemasons, Rothschilds, etc.. Remember your alternate fact definitions, folks. False flag=conspira-liar allies caught in the act. Fake news= conspira-liars proven wrong.

The cultural crash back to, at best, that of about 4 September 476 will be even bigger. Will our great grandchildren relish the return of Feudalism as an improvement in government from the rampages of warlords? Physical security and a bite to eat always wins out in the end.

I know what this reminds me of! When I was in high school, back in the 60s, we did an underwater theme for a prom. We strung wires across the gym, about 10 feet up, and then laid rolls of dry cleaner bags that were pale blue across them. They rippled with air movement. We had big rolls of paper taped to the walls and had dreamy fish and jellyfish and all sorts of undersea creatures of our imaginations. We had a chest with fake gold and jewels spilling out in a corner for photographs of pimply young couples. We thought we were really something!

The nazi militias have been getting a lot better organized and more violent, and it is happening fast. A big mob of them fought with Black Bloc marchers in Austin on May Day. Alex Jones showed up in person to egg on his flying monkeys. The back blockers obliged by giving him plenty of footage of crazed bolsheviks rampaging in the streets. The highlight, though, was a Jonesian open carry loon being arrested for pointing a gun at the anarchists.

Lucy will start staying out of the box more and more now as the owlets approach fledge. I figure within 2 weeks they will take the plunge. I still haven’t seen their heads in the opening.

British comedian Stephen Fry faces blasphemy charges in Ireland.
bbc.com

The charge carries a €25,000 fine.

Police in the Republic of Ireland have launched an investigation after a viewer claimed comments made by Stephen Fry on a TV show were blasphemous.

Officers are understood to be examining whether the British comedian committed a criminal offence under the Defamation Act when he appeared on RTE in 2015.

Fry had asked why he should “respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid god who creates a world…. full of injustice”.

He later said he was not “offensive towards any particular religion”.

According to a report in the Irish Independent newspaper, no publicised cases of blasphemy have been brought before the courts since the law was introduced in 2009 and a source said it was “highly unlikely” that a prosecution against Fry would take place.

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if someone brought forth blasphemy laws here.

The article notes that Ireland’s constitution only had protections for Christianity, so the law was drawn up to extend blasphemy protection to other religions (but not atheists).

I don’t know what the deal is about reich-wingers and cigarettes (but I’ll bet they wouldn’t be caught dead smoking Sherman’s Fantasias).

I took up smoking when I was sixteen, gave it up for nine years in my thirties and forties, but the stress of homelessness took me back to it.

No one in my family has died of cancer, though two people have had it (my aunt, cervical, in remission) and my sister-in-law (breast, currently stage IV). Most people in my family have smoked, strangely none have gotten cancer from it.

Sounds like something the disciples of Ayn Rand would do. She promoted smoking as a symbol of freedom and, when she quit after being diagnosed with cancer, she refused to admit that she was wrong.

Actually, I do wonder how much of the Tea Party, Freedom Caucus, and modern libertarian political discord we face in this country can be laid at her feet. Paul Ryan is an avid fan and demonstrates his lack of compassion for others on a daily basis. Trump in the past cited Rand’s work as an influence on his philosophy (such as it is). She poisoned everything she touched and she may have fatally poisoned this country too.

The defense of cigarette smoking is even more braindead-dumbfuck when you consider facts like this: All Smoke Is Not Created Equal

Consequently, studies have so far failed to identify an association between cannabis smoke exposure and elevated risks of smoking-related cancers, such as cancers of the lung and neck. In fact, the largest case-controlled study ever to investigate the respiratory effects of marijuana smoking reported that cannabis use was not associated with lung-related cancers, even among subjects who reported smoking more than 22,000 joints over their lifetime. Summarizing the study’s findings in The Washington Post, pulmonologist Dr. Donald Tashkin, Professor Emeritus at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, concluded: “We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use. What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

So…yeah…if you want to be all rebellious and freedomy and shit, don’t smoke up, toke up :P

22,000 joints? over a lifetime? A one pack a day smoker of standard cigarettes would smoke that much in only three years. So this study does not prove the safety of marijuana — only that “heavy” marijuana smokers currently do not smoke anywhere near as much as light cigarette smokers

Except medical researchers have actually studied the risk of low frequency tobacco cigarette smoking and found the risk not only measurable, but statistically very significant. Meaning we do have an apples to apples comparison.

The researchers also looked at specific causes of death. Compared with never-smokers, the risk of death from lung cancer was nine times higher among those who smoked less than one cigarette a day over their lifetime, and 12 times higher among those who smoked one to 10 cigarettes a day.

Dr Lizardo  May 6, 2017 • 11:24:18pm

Morning, Lizards; the day shift has begun here in Europe.

I came across this, and if it’s accurate, that upcoming meeting between Trump and Erdogan is gonna be awkwaaaaaard.

The Trump administration is ready to press ahead with a U.S.-backed military offensive to evict the Islamic State from its last remaining urban stronghold in the Syrian city of Raqqa over strong objections from Turkey.

President Donald Trump is expected to inform his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of the U.S. plans when he visits the White House later this month.

The long-delayed operation, based on an Obama administration-drafted plan that gives a leading role to Kurdish forces in the operation, will likely move forward in earnest after Erdogan’s visit, defense officials told Foreign Policy.

U.S. Central Command has sent a request to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to authorize arming Syrian Kurdish forces for the Raqqa offensive, several officials said. Once Mattis signs off on the request, President Trump must give the plan his blessing to clear the way for the offensive. Officials and experts said Trump will almost certainly approve the plan put forward by commanders.

The offensive will depend on a mixed force of Kurdish and Arab fighters backed by U.S. air power and artillery. Trump inherited the blueprint for pushing the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, out of Raqqa from the prior administration. The Obama team had concluded that the Syrian Kurdish troops represented the only viable force on the ground that could capture Raqqa without resorting to deploying a large number of U.S. conventional troops. Turkey vehemently opposes the idea of Kurdish fighters liberating an Arab city, however.

As for the purity ponies that don’t want to vote for anyone because they don’t like either candidate, it’s that sort of thing that helped get us Donald Trump.

Fake US Journalist shares White House info on Russian state television.

(Polygraph is a service of Radio Free Europe that fact-checks Eastern European and Central Asian news reports).

The person in question lived in the USA for many years, but there is no evidence he ever served as a journalist in the USA. He now lives in Russia and is promoted as a former US journalist.

On April 18, the guests on “Studio One,” a political talk show on Russian state television’s Channel One, discussed North Korea’s failed test firing of a missile and the U.S. response. Among the experts taking part in the discussion was a person identified as an American journalist named Greg Vainer.

Opening the show - which on this day was headlined “Where will the confrontation lead?” - Studio One host Artem Sheinin asked: “Do you know what is the best way to determine if some political event really disturbs people? …When you get a phone call in the studio and the people on the other end tell you: ‘Hi, we are on vacation but we are very much concerned about Trump’s aggressive behavior with North Korea! Explain to us - will there be World War III or should we be planting our garden?’”

It refers to both anti-fascist groups (most of which are non-violent), and the broader opposition to fascism in general.

The term has been conflated with the German group that formed with violence against fascism supporters as one of its aims.

I’m not sure the original definition of the term is worth trying to salvage; I stick to “anti-fascist” rather than “antifa” to avoid the confusion.

Antifa may refer to:

Anti-fascism, the opposition to fascist ideologies, groups and individuals.

An Antifascist Action group or a member of that group:
List of Antifascist Action groups
Anti-Fascist Action, a British group
Antifaschistische Aktion, a German group whose name means “Anti-Fascist Action”
Antifasistisk Aktion, an affiliated group in Sweden

Some of those groups are violent, some are not.
en.wikipedia.org

As I noted though, the term is muddled enough it isn’t worth trying to salvage (it has existed since the 1920’s).

re: #165 Anymouse

It refers to both anti-fascist groups (most of which are non-violent), and the broader opposition to fascism in general.

The term has been conflated with the German group that formed with violence against fascism supporters as one of its aims.

I’m not sure the original definition of the term is worth trying to salvage; I stick to “anti-fascist” rather than “antifa” to avoid the confusion.

I’ve always seen the group, when referred to as a group proper by the media, with a capital “A”: ‘Antifa’.

Yes, but it is important to understand that when people like Kita refer to the Antifa they do not refer to antifascism in general.

His support for neo-fascism lies not in saying bad things about the Antifa but rather in embracing the candidate from the neo-fascist, Holocaust-denying party.

I don’t know who Kita is (aside from that tweet above), but that is the way I’ve seen the term most often used recently (as violent opponents to fascists).

I guess that makes the US Army “Antifa,” since they were also violent opponents to fascists. /s

I first came to Göttingen, Germany in the late 80’s: it was a university town, overrun with all sorts of antifa, Autonomen and anarchist types.

Although I was certainly liberal as anything and totally anti-fascist, I could not relate to any of those folks, most of them struck me as posers.

American media companies have less tolerance for anarchic comedy than the Brits do. Also, R&M and the Smothers Brothers delved into pretty sharp political humor during a contentious time of American history.

I was too young to really take advantage of the free-wheeling 1960s. I could only be a spectator.

I likewise. I enjoyed Mad Men, because it was about the decade I grew up in. Another movie whose nostalgia appealed to me was Inherent Vice (although not a great film in and of itself).
But I started becoming aware of the world around me in around 1969, and that was when I noticed how the Summer of Love had run its course, Altamont was going on, Nixon’s Operation Intercept was shutting down marijuana smuggling, and dealers were switching to heroin, which was easier to smuggle and more profitable.
I remember watching the bright, happy, colorful hippy scene start to turn into something very dark, violent and ugly.

Happy happy joy joy. The American Academy of Neurology has issued new guidelines on SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy).

Previously, the people at risk was unknown (except obviously having epilepsy). The new guidelines suggest that anyone with generalised seizures can die from SUDEP.

They encourage physicians to have conversations with their patients about that (you know, you might die from this but I can’t say if or when). I’m guessing I won’t hear diddly from the VA.

Their big recommendations?

Take your meds, make sure you get enough sleep (like I could avoid that), strive to stop seizures (WTF? No one has ever figured out how to do that), and limit alcohol (because why not).

Biggest risk factor is being male. I don’t think my wife would want me to change that though. /s

SUDEP accounts for about 17% of all deaths in people with epilepsy, so I’m guessing if I ever had to get health insurance, I’d be hosed. (I can’t get life insurance now.)

The ’60s morphed into the wannabe-counterculture era of the ’70s — corporatized counter-culture.

I’m up to season 5 of Mad Men. Haven’t started it. They pretty much nailed the look and feel of the 1960s, including all the misogynism, homophobia, and racism that flew right over my head until I hit age 11 or 12 (1967-68).

I had a high school buddy who was nostalgic about the 1950s. He knew bands, songs, lyrics, the whole thing, and would drive all of us nuts offering commentary on the Don McLean song “American Pie.” We were both 4 in 1960. LOL

Millennials and Boomers have a lot in common in terms of hedonistic self centered bullshit. The difference is Boomers really did have the world handed to them on a silver platter only to overwhelmingly chose to forget and then shit all over the ideals they espoused in their youth.
….

Calling BS on this overly broad statement. (Very politely, cuz that’s me.) The silver platter included institutionalized racism and sexism. My early childhood included being expected to conform with the Father Knows Best and Donna Reed Show philosophies of Life. At the same time, my school was rocked by desegregation. Parents of playmates met the school buses with shouts of horrible things at the Black children. The parents scared me, but the courage of my new classmates inspired me. All the while, my dreams of having a career were met with laughter from adults who told me my role was to marry, tend a household and have babies.

As soon as I turned 18, I began working on civil rights projects. Still am. I may have to retire soon, but then I’ll be a volunteer with the ACLU.

I’m not alone. I have friends from many decades ago who are still on the frontlines. And at work I meet with high school and college students who are continuing the march towards a more inclusive society.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana, in the 60’s. Born into a white neighborhood that turned black and Latino over the course of the decade.
My mom was a widower who was cheated out of her pension by US Steel (decades later, she received some compensation as part of a class action suit) but as a result, we could not afford to flee to the white suburbs with the rest.

So I grew up a minority, and as such, have little or no tolerance for the views of bigots and “racial realists” who grew up in all-white towns or neighborhoods.

I was born in Michigan but grew up wherever my father was posted in the Navy (Virginia, Maryland). Living on base meant integrated base housing.

That changed when I entered school - segregated school in K and first grade. My mother told my father “hell no” and said she was taking my sister and me to Michigan for school while he was posted to The Philippines and South Vietnam. (He agreed Maryland’s segregated schools would not be good.)

The tiny village in which I grew up in central Michigan was surprisingly well-integrated for a rural community (it still is today).

After the Nazi conquest of France in 1940, St. Pierre and Miquelon was initially controlled by the collaborationist Vichy regime, which the United States recognized. On Christmas eve 1941 a rather feeble Free French task force of a submarine (the famous Surcouf) and 3 corvettes staged a surprise appearance and demanded the surrender of the Vichy forces. The latter consisted of a Gendermarie detachment with a machine gun and some old rifles so the surrender was quickly forthcoming. The Vichy Governor was arrested and tossed into the territory’s only jail cell. The United States actually protested the liberation as a violation of the Monroe Doctrine but since the US was now at war with Vichy’s Nazi friends and therefore a defacto ally of the Free French, the matter was soon set aside. en.m.wikipedia.org

re: #141 Targetpractice

Here’s my message to my fellow Millennials and the generation behind us: The world doesn’t give a fuck about your feelings. Grow the fuck up.

Allow me to augment your statement:

“Milleneials, it’s an old adage that every generation blames the one before for the current problems in the world and the current predicament you are in.

You are the first generation to have grown up with the Internet present in every corner in your life. And the Internet, like all technologies, is a tool. Tools have no morality. They can be good for good or bad. And as we have been subjected to recently in the political sphere, the dark forces have been using the Internet to plant fake stories intermixed with legitimate documents in order to create confusion.

Needless to say, this kind of meddling in the politics of democratic countries cannot be tolerated.

Now, dear millennials, let’s get back to you for a second. This editorial cartoon from a few years back speaks volumes:

Sorry, Millenials-maybe you should stop Facebooking and open your eyes some….

There’s an inviolate rule of politics: Politics is not a passive activity. If you don’y vote, you have no right to complain for what happens for the next 2 years. And if choose not to vote, well, that’s an even more egregious act in my eye-what that tell me is that you have let you cynicism taken over and bought into the media-led message that your vote doesn’t count.

I’m here to tell you-Your vote absofuckinglutely counts, across the board from the local dogcatcher up to the President of the United States.

Lastly, if you don’t like the current cast of clowns who represent you, why not challenge them? There’s going to be plenty of resources available on how to start and a political campaign by seasoned veterans. Should you decide to go down that road, make sure your platform aligns up with your own personal core values (so you can sleep with yourself/partner at night.)

Here’s the key takeaway, Millenials: You are the biggest voting block, and the current voting block demographic that got Trump elected is dying. Start running your candidates, start getting massive voter registration campagns going, make sure no one is denied the right to vote for the mid-terms. With the recent GOP screw-up with the AHCA, they are vulnerable.

Who would have known that in 1978, Roger waters would have been so prescient…..

Interviews of people there seem to show a lot of people are not voting in favour of Mr. Macron, they are voting against Ms. LePen.

Many young voters are casting blank ballots in protest of both candidates.

St Pierre-Miquelon is connected to Canada only by ferry. The territory speaks French, uses Euros, and is otherwise part of France.

As always, the obligatory quote from Czech author Jaroslav Hašek for those shocked by strong language.

Those who boggle at strong language are cowards, because it is real life which is shocking them, and weaklings like that are the very people who cause most harm to culture and character. They would like to see the nation grow up into a group of over-sensitive little people—masturbators of false culture of the type of St. Aloysius, of whom it is said in the book of the monk Eustachius that when he heard a man breaking wind with deafening noise he immediately burst into tears and could only be consoled by prayers.

People like that proclaim their indignation in public but take unusual pleasure in going to public lavatories to read obscene inscriptions on the walls.

In using a few strong expressions in my book I have done nothing more than affirm en passant how people actually talk.

We cannot expect the inn-keeper Palivec to speak with the same refinement as Mrs Laudová, Doctor Gurth, Mrs Olga Fastrová* and a whole series of others who would like to turn the whole Czechoslovak Republic into a vast salon with parquet flooring, where people go about in tail-coats, white ties and gloves, speak in choice phrases and cultivate the refined behaviour of the drawing-room. But beneath this camouflage these drawing-room lions indulge in the worst vices and excesses.

*= people of Hašek’s era who wrote on morals and proper behavior

Too bad Hašek’s quote is too long for a Tweet.

“Trump was strutting up and down, talking to his new members about how they were part of the greatest club in North Carolina,” Dodson says. “And when I first met him, I asked him how he was — you know, this is the journalist in me — I said, ‘What are you using to pay for these courses?’ And he just sort of tossed off that he had access to $100 million.”

$100 million.

“So when I got in the cart with Eric,” Dodson says, “as we were setting off, I said, ‘Eric, who’s funding? I know no banks — because of the recession, the Great Recession — have touched a golf course. You know, no one’s funding any kind of golf construction. It’s dead in the water the last four or five years.’ And this is what he said. He said, ‘Well, we don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia.’ I said, ‘Really?’ And he said, ‘Oh, yeah. We’ve got some guys that really, really love golf*, and they’re really invested in our programs. We just go there all the time.’ Now that was three years ago, so it was pretty interesting.”

*When the Trump family admitted they were financing their golf courses by helping Russian criminals launder money.

re: #188 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I grew up in Gary, Indiana, in the 60’s. Born into a white neighborhood that turned black and Latino over the course of the decade.
My mom was a widower who was cheated out of her pension by US Steel (decades later, she received some compensation as part of a class action suit) but as a result, we could not afford to flee to the white suburbs with the rest.

So I grew up a minority, and as such, have little or no tolerance for the views of bigots and “racial realists” who grew up in all-white towns or neighborhoods.

Sounds like my background to a large degree. The one difference is I went to a mostly upper class White catholic schools system. So my school days were a contrast of societies. And the big learning from that came from the fact that my school friends would pretty much not visit me at my home…it was across the railroad tracks. Yet I was fine and could visit them in their tony homes. It made no sense to a grade school aged kid and made me view it all differently and ask a lot of uncomfortable questions.

So like you I am extremely sensitive to racial issues. All my “home” playmates and friends were primarily Black kids…and they were great people from good homes. Actually many of their homes were not as well furnished, large, etc., but they were well kept and loving. Sometimes way more well kept and loving than my school mates.

In a way, I wish every American could grow up having to deal with all classes and races so they get out of their imposed isolation away from the “others” and learn just how wrong a lot of their held beliefs are.

Oh yeah, I got into a lot of trouble in my life asking those uncomfortable questions. Still do.

Exactly. The black and Latino kids I grew up with and their families were decent folks and nice neighbors.

Which is why I will not put up with anyone making judgments or statements about whole races or classes of people, especially if they never associated directly with any of them.

Thanks to a suddenly single Mom that divorced when I was 5, I had a mixed race childhood. Afternoons after school in a Hispanic community, well back then probably almost all Mexican American, and then some weekends visiting grandparents in a deeply black neighborhood. Ground zero in the 60’s riots. Daytime school was WASP and Jewish.

I also have no patience for racial bias. Mom and reality taught me how destructive those ideas are.

Just making sure I’m parsing this correctly:

Ryan is insisting that Trump/Ryancare will not deny people who have preexisting conditions the chance to buy insurance. However, his bill allows states to not honor Obamacare’s guarantees, and then dump those people into a high risk pool that will essentially be too expensive for the average patient to purchase insurance.

So to piggy back off of the Mercedes comment: hey, sick person, there’s your insurance over there. The premiums are several thousand a month. Can’t afford it? Well, sucks to be you.

I see a part of the SNL opening has been posted up thread.

I’m such a lover of the Morning Joke Show I think the whole opening needs to be seen. Both SNL members (Alex Moffat and Kate McKinnon) do a good job, but Kate always gives that little extra. She nails Mika perfectly.

Enjoy…I did.

Not to mention that GOP solutions tend to be as simplistic as their messaging. Which is good for getting elected, but not if you’re assuming good governance (which, luckily for the GOP, they don’t have to worry about, since they never intend to govern). Reducing complex ideas and problems into soundbites are always going to be harder when you’re trying to retain nuance or talk about something that is over the layman’s head. Yeah, you can simplify it, but you also run the risk of losing them on the point of ‘why is this a problem in the first place’.

Trump has the advantage that his own previous statements cannot be used to pin him down. On almost any issue.

He has people from the WH Press Secretary through Fox News to legions of bloggers whose job is to relativize, rationalize and justify what he has said, and if that fails, then say “Schucks, he didn’t really mean that, he was just trying to gain a better bargaining position!”

And if that fails, then he will simply utter something else outrageous and people can start squabbling over what he said/meant there.

Why didn’t the Muslim woman speak up to one of the cashiers or call for the store manager immediately? I live close to Reston and can assure you that Northern Virginia is very progressive/liberal and that kind of nonsense is not tolerated there. I’ve probably shopped in that very Trader Joe’s.

Absolutely hope that that woman’s identity is revealed and she suffers severe consequences for her racist outburst.

Patricia, I deal with these asshole racists every day at Social Security. When they call us they love to spit out the “N” word like the dam is broke. The White bigots will always say that they earned those checks unlike the lazy “N” words. And you especially hear that from people on SSI (Supplemental Security Income) the program that isn’t financed by FICA taxes. Only goes to prove that LBJ told the truth 50 years ago to Bill Moyers when he said the following.

I always hoped that racism would die out. But it hasn’t because the Republikkklan Party has encouraged it ever since LBJ signed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. It’s very sad of me to conclude that it will never go away.

US Army are not a bunch of vigilantes.

If you support vigilantism, it’s your right, just don’t complain about KKK’s vigilantism after you’ve made your choice.

Easy to say if you’re used to the rule of law.

In East Germany in the early 90’s, the old rulers were out while the new rule of law had yet to settle in. Most of the population as well as large parts of the police turned a blind eye to the violent Nazi thugs who popped up everywhere, feeling that they had free reign. More than once during my youth I had to run from Nazis or other right-wing thugs. I didn’t always make it.

Resistance by Antifa groups helped to keep the Nazis in check. And yes, that included violent resistance. I’d say it’s comparable to the violent resistance by black groups against the KKK in the US, which also helped to kill off the KKK.

Of course, this being Germany, the violence generally did not involve guns (at least not from the left), which may explain why it feels less outrageous to me than it does to people with a US cultural background. And as far as I can tell, all of the hundreds of killings during that time were done by Nazis, not Antifa fighters.

By the way, the “Antideutsche” faction of the German radical left would definitely consider the US army involvement in WW2 as part of Antifa action.

It seems like 35% is the baseline for assholes everywhere now. Unfortunately, here they win.

That is because DT was able to take advantage of a dysfunctional Republican party which was afraid of alienating his base of support, a fawning, celebrity-obsessed press that had to present “another side” to everything, no matter how egregious, and an opposition party divided through an outside candidate and a nominee with over twenty years of political baggage.

And while Hillary’s record of public service was a matter of public record, all we know of DT’s record of self-service are the fits and snatches he released…

It all worked to gain him enough popular votes to secure an electoral victory, and now can spend decades undoing the damage he will wreak, if we recover at all.

Now, I guess, we can wait for the “analysis” (emphasis on the “anal”) from the “experts” on how this was really a “moral victory” for Le Pen and the neo-fascists - how this shows that the French (like, apparently, everybody else in Europe) is still “anxious” over global political trends, immigration, “multiculti”, etc., etc. ad nauseam. Which, of course, they would do for anything short of a 90-10% debacle…

I wonder what the Talking Yam is going to tweet? Blandly congratulatory pablum to Macron? Or gripes about a “rigged” election…?

Wiki - Josh Mandel

He lost a Senate race to Sherrod Brown in 2012 running as a pompous ass young newbie with a lot of mouth.

I sure hope the Democrats come up with someone decent. They’ve been quiet…but the whole Ohio Democratic Party is new as of last year. The weak run against Kasich his last election, and the run against Portman by Strickland last year caused that.

If I had the choice of my poison if another Republican gets the seat I’d take Husted. Mandel is still an arrogant ass with a lot of mouth.
