France Says ā€œNon!ā€ to the Far Right, Overwhelmingly Rejects Marine Le Pen for Emmanuel Macron

Trumpā€™s and Putinā€™s endorsements and a last-minute hacking attack didnā€™t help Le Pen
World • Views: 48,302

Hereā€™s a piece of good news from across the pond, where France has voted overwhelmingly to elect Emmanual Macron and hand the leader of the fascist Front National, Marine Le Pen, a decisive defeat.

So as America continues its descent into a far right nightmare nation led by the corrupt Trump gang, France wonā€™t be joining us. Congratulations to France, but woe to the United States.

From France, a really big thank you to America. Trump worked great as a vaccine (he is universally despised here). :)
Now maybe we can help you remove that orange stain - as of tonight, the French criminal system and intelligence services have already started looking into the so-called MacronLeaks. Interesting stuff might turn upā€¦

Glad to see Macron won; a big sigh of relief.

There was another, smaller election today as well, in Germany, where Merkelā€™s party did very well - it looks like Angela Merkel may well be on her way to a fourth term as Chancellor.

Chancellor Angela Merkelā€™s conservatives secured a strong win Sunday in state polls in northern Germany, early results showed, giving a boost to her bid to retain power in Septemberā€™s national elections.

Voters in the small, northern state of Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea handed her CDU party 33.3 percent, while the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) clinched 26.5 percent, latest results showed.

The vote outcome marked a blow for the Social Democrats who had earlier this year seen a surge in support since new leader Martin Schulz was chosen in February.

But this enthusiasm appeared to be fading, and Schulzā€™s supporters are increasingly fearful that the momentum he had been surfing on will not carry him into the chancellery, which Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have held since 2005.

Good to hear about Merkel. She is now officially the Leader of the Free World since there is no way that an ignoramus like Trump can claim that lofty position.

Germany has an annoyingly decentralized system of elections, there are always some sort of local or state elections going on here. (Three state elections this year and the National elections in September, but that does not count the local and regional ones, or the mayoral elections in various towns and cities)

But for that, there are no issues with voter registration: everyone has a (mandatory) ID, and a single registered address.

You just show up at your local polling place (which is often the pub in smaller villages),
and they check your name off a list. You are already registered.

Also regarding some peopleā€™s worries about Germany - Merkel is only threatened by the social-democrats, who are as staunchly Europhile as she is - so either way Germany is safe.
Iā€™m from a French town across the German border, and last spring the German tabloid Bild was running front covers about ā€œHow can YOU help refugees?ā€, followed by tips as of how to take action locallyā€¦ When you get *this* from what is basically their trash press, I think you can assume it is safeā€¦ :)

Heh, itā€™s the same thing here in small villages as well. I went out to a village several years ago and the local pub (hospoda in Czech) also doubled as the city hall. Thereā€™s a village about 22 km from here where the city hall is located at the train station, LOL.

I am very heartened by the election results. For the entirety of Europe, of course, but personally, as well.

My husband and I are taking our first actual vacation together (his first ever real vacation) that is not tied around my annual corporate conference or surrounding some work related trip. We are taking a river cruise. We originally wanted to take the Paris-Normandy round trip but we wouldnā€™t do it if LePen won. We were going to do the Amsterdam to Basel route instead.

But both of us really wanted to do the French route, but wouldnā€™t give France the tourist dollars because we both felt that would be rewarding the kind of society we couldnā€™t ever support in any fashion, including our measly tourist dollars.

We are going to spend an extra 4-8 days in Paris, as well. Hubby is going to do all the usual touristy stuff, but since I have been to Paris a couple of times, I am going to take some French cooking classes.

We are both unbelievably excited!

I hope that works out great for him. And you!

Thank you!

Itā€™s so odd to me that a guy who is 60 has never taken a vacation. He owns a small business and while he has an office manager, she cannot do the work he does, so when he doesnā€™t work, he doesnā€™t make money. In the 30 years he has owned that business, he has never had a sick day and never taken a day off.

When he went with me to my first company conference (and we took a mini-vacation with it as we always do), he was beyond nervous. He said a few days before he might not be able to go. All the way to the airport, he was freaking out about his business. Half-way through the 6 days he was gone, he was likeā€¦nothing burned? I can actually take time away? The second conference he went to with me was less disconcerting for him but still so. When the third one rolled around he was eager to go. He took some business calls while he was gone and realized that by giving his customerā€™s notice that he was going to be gone and making sure everything was all set before he left, he actually could leave and his business wouldnā€™t collapse.

I used to travel extensively for work so every weekend I was away was a vacation to me. I went white water rafting in Washington, would go to museums, all kinds of thingsā€¦and every single European work trip I took included a week or so of vacation time after the work was done.

So, for us, this vacation is a really BFD. For him because he is actually taking one and is not stressing about being gone for 2 1/2 weeks. For me that I am ā€œmakingā€ him take it and that he is actually looking forward to it.

stpaulbear  May 7, 2017 • 12:05:56pm

Way OT:

In September of 1981, Twin Tone Records in Minneapolis sponsored a weekā€™s worth of local bands at 7th Street Entry (a small room next to First Avenue) and recorded all of the gigs. The band I was in was part of that. Some of the music, especially The Replacements and Husker Du, showed up on YouTube, but most of the stuff had been unreleased until a couple days ago. One of the videos that they just released was our entire set. Wow.

I cringe a bit when I watch it. Weā€™re extremely 1980, very angst-y, and Iā€™d like to have a do-over on a lot of my playing, but it is also cool to have this stuff released. The band put out a couple records (Iā€™m only on one of them) that have never appeared on CD, so this is basically the only digital record available.

If you go to the twintonedigital homepage, there are other sets there too so you can get an idea of what the Minneapolis (non-funk) scene sounded like in 1981.

re: #64 stpaulbear

If it were still 1981, I would love that. I was listening to Suburban Lawns at a local bar. This is better than I remember that as being.

I donā€™t know enough about France to understand that map. Why the concentration for Le Nazi in the northeast?

I think the rest of the world getting a look at Trump may have tripped up the global Shitape strategy. The whole Russia-Trollbro-WikiLeaks-BreitNazi information structure is mainline news now, and the disinfo is getting a little bitā€¦ Unsubtle.

Daddy Vladdie told Trump to go play golf and stay off the Twittertubes this week, because the real gangsters had work to do. Unfortunately, they let the interns do the photoshopping and release scheduling over at KleptoLeaks, and the end product wasnā€™t effective.

(Poor Julian, I wonder if theyā€™re holding fewer shares of Gazprom for him now.)

The blonde singer had been griping at me to get rid of the mustache that I wore at the time. I finally shaved it off for this gig. Everybody in the band noticed that Iā€™d shaved it off except for the blonde singer. Shortly after this I decided fuck it and started growing a beard. I hate shaving.

I was also a seriously out-of-shape drunk back then. Also closeted because I hadnā€™t gotten to a place I felt safe to come out yet. I miss some stuff about those days but not a lot.

Gah! I just got to one of my favorite songs in our set and the video is out of sync with the audio. Bummer!

Day Two: no, seriously, do it properly.
Day Three: alas, you Americans donā€™t know metric. Do it again.
Day Four: is this some kind of protest you are launching? Do it again.
Day Five: you see that drop of water? It is the tears of my culinary ancestors. Do it again.
Day Six: I donā€™t care if you cut your hand, unless your hand is in 2mm cubes.
Day Seven: tell us where Mustapha hid the bomb. Also, do the carrots again.
Day Eight: Now we will move you to slightly larger cubes. Also, hold this emeter and answer some questions.
Day Nine: Gerard Depardieu doesnā€™t think your 2mm cubes are good enough. He told me so himself. You should take this rifle and shoot him.
Day Ten: Cooking school is over. Remember that gasoline should be poured over the highest objects in the room first, so that the excess pools on lower surfaces and the floor. After all, the chefā€™s art prizes economy.

A further thought on this: Democrats are going to need to make this part of their campaign spending until we make the idea of document dumps a useless exercise. Weā€™re all so trained to trust text, but weā€™re going to have to get people (re)used to the idea of verifying sources first. And one way to do that is to flood places like this with bogus docs, which is going to require paying people to do it.

ā€œThe end of Franceā€ has been a staple theme of RW polemicizing since 1940 or so; and yet, for some unknown reason, France is still here, still doing pretty well, still showing no signs of collapsing into anarchy/communism/fascism/Islamism - take your pick.
Funny thing about thatā€¦.

PS: Iā€™m sure this election is going to be thoroughly autopsied, but just an off-the cuff observation: IMO, Le Pen and the FNā€™s showing this time is actually a lot weaker than it might appear: even if 35% isnā€™t that great a number, that (one presumes) is the upper limit of its support in numbers: The FN could only manage that with historically-low turnout (by French standards) and higher-than-usual voter apathy. You wonder what the numbers would be if Le Pen had been facing a truly popular opponentā€¦

Not to rain on Macronā€™s victory parade, but The Guardian did leaven their reporting on the French elections (in their usual manner) with a sobering reminder:

Marine Le Pen defeated but Franceā€™s far right is far from finished.

There is another round of French elections coming up in a few months (for Parliament), and analysts predict that the FN - which, todayā€™s drubbing aside, isnā€™t going to go away - MAY garner enough votes to establish itself as a significant Parliamentary bloc. Maybe.

Buckeyes QB Cardale Jones graduates from Ohio State

Former Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones graduated from Ohio State on Sunday, using his graduation cap to poke fun at his infamous 2012 tweet that declared ā€œclasses are pointlessā€ for football players and that ā€œwe ainā€™t come here to play school.ā€

Jones told The Columbus Dispatch in February that he returned to Ohio State this spring to complete two remaining classes toward his degree in African-American and African studies. He had left the school in 2016 to declare for the NFL draft. The Buffalo Bills selected him in the fourth round.

As a freshman in 2012, Jones questioned the importance of going to class in a tweet that drew national attention. Jones later deleted his Twitter account, and the university issued a statement reminding student-athletes not to post anything to social media that could ā€œembarrass themselves, their team, teammates, the university, their family or other groups, organizations or people.ā€

Want to know why Mercer aggressively backed Trump?

WASHINGTON
The Internal Revenue Service is demanding a whopping $7 billion or more in back taxes from the worldā€™s most profitable hedge fund, whose bossā€™s wealth and cyber savvy helped Donald Trump pole-vault into the White House.

Suddenly, the governmentā€™s seven-year pursuit of Renaissance Technologies LLC is blanketed in political intrigue, now that the hedge fundā€™s reclusive, anti-establishment co-chief executive, Robert Mercer, has morphed into a political force who might be owed a big presidential favor.

With Trump in the Oval Office, Mercer and his daughter Rebekah, who has become his public voice, seem armed with political firepower every which way you look - and thatā€™s even though presidential adviser Stephen Bannon, their former senior executive and political strategist, appears to have recently lost influence.

Buckeyes QB Cardale Jones graduates from Ohio State

Smile!

For those who might not know, this is the third-string quarterback who had his Cinderella season leading the Buckeyes to their national championship in 2014ā€”

Cardale Jones made the second start of his college career, and the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 42-35 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl to advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship against the Oregon Ducks. In the championship game he excelled once again and led the Buckeyes to a 42-20 victory over the Ducks. Jones recorded 280 all-purpose yards, scoring two touchdowns. He completed 16 of 23 attempted passes for 242 yards, with one touchdown and one interception and ran for another 38 yards and a touchdown.

It has the same problem. What if 106 of the departments each had .1% of the total population, while one department had the remaining 89.4% of the population. So one candidate could win 80% of the vote in the 106 districts but it wouldnā€™t matter if the other candidate won by ā€œonlyā€ 60% in the last district. The map could be a sea of bright red, but the one district with most of the population be the one that mattered. If each district has approximately the area and population that wouldnā€™t matter ā€” but thatā€™s generally not true.

re: #22 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Germany has an annoyingly decentralized system of elections, there are always some sort of local or state elections going on here. (Three state elections this year and the National elections in September, but that does not count the local and regional ones, or the mayoral elections in various towns and cities)

But for that, there are no issues with voter registration: everyone has a (mandatory) ID, and a single registered address.

You just show up at your local polling place (which is often the pub in smaller villages),
and they check your name off a list. You are already registered.

Sounds much like the Australian system and we donā€™t find it annoying. Each state has itā€™s own elections which are never held at the same time as Federal elections. Then within each state there are local council (probably closest is US County) which are held throughout the state on the same date. Allows the voter to concentrate on the issues - local, state, federal rather than have to decide on them all at the same time. We do have a National/Federal vote registration system controlled by an independent authority which covers voting at all levels - and like Germany you just show up at your local voting station - never a pub however (what a good idea), usually a school or church.

We also vote on Saturdays - I will never understand why the US votes on a week day - best way to stifle the vote perhaps.

Real-life Walter White made drugs to help vets with PTSD

ā€œI wanted to bring legitimacy to the field,ā€ he told The Post. ā€œI have always just been convinced that psychedelics are important and that their importance has been overlooked for all these years. I believe in their value as molecules that heal people. I guess you could say I was a mole in the system.ā€

Perhaps itā€™s no coincidence that Nichols would end up working on a cure for PTSD, having lived with a father who he believes suffered from an undiagnosed case of it. Nicholsā€™ father, Earl, went from high school into the Army, serving in France in World War II. Afterward, he worked in a print shop and continued to serve in the Army Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

ā€œHe ran our house like a military barracks,ā€ said Nichols. His father treated Nichols and his brother like soldiers, shouting ā€œFall in men!ā€ at them and whistling ā€œTapsā€ at bedtime. ā€œMaybe part of my motivation is to heal people like my father,ā€ he said. ā€œPeople who were really kind of bent by life.ā€

A cartoon showing committing suicide by using a gun to the head is never a good reason to make a political point.

Especially when the point is historically inaccurate in regards to Hitler, and there are people here who have personal experience in dealing with the aftermath of people very dear to them who ended their existences by that very method.

So yeah, I do not take this cavalier attitude lightly.

Anne Hildalgoā€™s tweet makes me very happy to see Parisians rejecting Le Pen so soundly. What pissed me off, besides her extremist positions on many issues, was Le Penā€™s recent cowardly move to distance herself from the political party she and her dad established and maintained for over 40 years. I think sheā€™d gotten a hint before the election that her extremist sh*t was being rejected and tried to transform herself into a moderate. Iā€™m glad the French voters saw through her BS move.

Oh, jesus. The last time I checked, someone from France mentioned that they heard participation was down. I was terrified that we were looking at a repeat.

Abstentions were rather high, but the (rough) numbers break down like this:

There were 12m abstentions, three million left their ballot paper blank and one million spoiled theirs.

More than 20million people voted Macron, 10.5m voted Le Pen.

So, roughly, 43% of potential electors voted for Macron, 34% voted for nobody and 22% voted for Le Pen.

re: #248 Interesting Times

And because registration is national and automatic, no state based voter suppression designed to advantage one party over the other.

Registration is not automatic. Itā€™s easier than it used to be, people get automatically registered at majority, but you still have to re-register if you move from one commune to another. You also have to register before the end of the year before the elections, no last-minute registration is possible.

It is, however, pretty easy to register, just bring some proof of residence (an electricity bill, or a letter from someone saying you live with them) and some ID (which everyone has) to your local town hall, fill in a simple form and youā€™re registered until the next time you move. In some departements you can even do it on-line now.
