Here’s a piece of good news from across the pond, where France has voted overwhelmingly to elect Emmanual Macron and hand the leader of the fascist Front National, Marine Le Pen, a decisive defeat.

So as America continues its descent into a far right nightmare nation led by the corrupt Trump gang, France won’t be joining us. Congratulations to France, but woe to the United States.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives secured a strong win Sunday in state polls in northern Germany, early results showed, giving a boost to her bid to retain power in September’s national elections.

Voters in the small, northern state of Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea handed her CDU party 33.3 percent, while the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) clinched 26.5 percent, latest results showed.

The vote outcome marked a blow for the Social Democrats who had earlier this year seen a surge in support since new leader Martin Schulz was chosen in February.

But this enthusiasm appeared to be fading, and Schulz’s supporters are increasingly fearful that the momentum he had been surfing on will not carry him into the chancellery, which Merkel and her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have held since 2005.

Germany has an annoyingly decentralized system of elections, there are always some sort of local or state elections going on here. (Three state elections this year and the National elections in September, but that does not count the local and regional ones, or the mayoral elections in various towns and cities)

But for that, there are no issues with voter registration: everyone has a (mandatory) ID, and a single registered address.

You just show up at your local polling place (which is often the pub in smaller villages),
and they check your name off a list. You are already registered.

Also regarding some people’s worries about Germany - Merkel is only threatened by the social-democrats, who are as staunchly Europhile as she is - so either way Germany is safe.
I’m from a French town across the German border, and last spring the German tabloid Bild was running front covers about “How can YOU help refugees?”, followed by tips as of how to take action locally… When you get *this* from what is basically their trash press, I think you can assume it is safe… :)

I am very heartened by the election results. For the entirety of Europe, of course, but personally, as well.

My husband and I are taking our first actual vacation together (his first ever real vacation) that is not tied around my annual corporate conference or surrounding some work related trip. We are taking a river cruise. We originally wanted to take the Paris-Normandy round trip but we wouldn’t do it if LePen won. We were going to do the Amsterdam to Basel route instead.

But both of us really wanted to do the French route, but wouldn’t give France the tourist dollars because we both felt that would be rewarding the kind of society we couldn’t ever support in any fashion, including our measly tourist dollars.

We are going to spend an extra 4-8 days in Paris, as well. Hubby is going to do all the usual touristy stuff, but since I have been to Paris a couple of times, I am going to take some French cooking classes.

We are both unbelievably excited!

He owns a small business and while he has an office manager, she cannot do the work he does, so when he doesn’t work, he doesn’t make money. In the 30 years he has owned that business, he has never had a sick day and never taken a day off.

When he went with me to my first company conference (and we took a mini-vacation with it as we always do), he was beyond nervous. He said a few days before he might not be able to go. All the way to the airport, he was freaking out about his business. Half-way through the 6 days he was gone, he was like…nothing burned? I can actually take time away? The second conference he went to with me was less disconcerting for him but still so. When the third one rolled around he was eager to go. He took some business calls while he was gone and realized that by giving his customer’s notice that he was going to be gone and making sure everything was all set before he left, he actually could leave and his business wouldn’t collapse.

I used to travel extensively for work so every weekend I was away was a vacation to me. I went white water rafting in Washington, would go to museums, all kinds of things…and every single European work trip I took included a week or so of vacation time after the work was done.

So, for us, this vacation is a really BFD. For him because he is actually taking one and is not stressing about being gone for 2 1/2 weeks. For me that I am “making” him take it and that he is actually looking forward to it.

In September of 1981, Twin Tone Records in Minneapolis sponsored a week’s worth of local bands at 7th Street Entry (a small room next to First Avenue) and recorded all of the gigs. The band I was in was part of that. Some of the music, especially The Replacements and Husker Du, showed up on YouTube, but most of the stuff had been unreleased until a couple days ago. One of the videos that they just released was our entire set. Wow.

I cringe a bit when I watch it. We’re extremely 1980, very angst-y, and I’d like to have a do-over on a lot of my playing, but it is also cool to have this stuff released. The band put out a couple records (I’m only on one of them) that have never appeared on CD, so this is basically the only digital record available.

If you go to the twintonedigital homepage, there are other sets there too so you can get an idea of what the Minneapolis (non-funk) scene sounded like in 1981.

In September of 1981, Twin Tone Records in Minneapolis sponsored a week’s worth of local bands at 7th Street Entry (a small room next to First Avenue) and recorded all of the gigs. The band I was in was part of that. Some of the music, especially The Replacements and Husker Du, showed up on YouTube, but most of the stuff had been unreleased until a couple days ago. One of the videos that they just released was our entire set. Wow.

I cringe a bit when I watch it. We’re extremely 1980, very angst-y, and I’d like to have a do-over on a lot of my playing, but it is also cool to have this stuff released. The band put out a couple records (I’m only on one of them) that have never appeared on CD, so this is basically the only digital record available.

If you go to the twintonedigital homepage, there are other sets there too so you can get an idea of what the Minneapolis (non-funk) scene sounded like in 1981.

The blonde singer had been griping at me to get rid of the mustache that I wore at the time. I finally shaved it off for this gig. Everybody in the band noticed that I’d shaved it off except for the blonde singer. Shortly after this I decided fuck it and started growing a beard. I hate shaving.

I was also a seriously out-of-shape drunk back then. Also closeted because I hadn’t gotten to a place I felt safe to come out yet. I miss some stuff about those days but not a lot.

A further thought on this: Democrats are going to need to make this part of their campaign spending until we make the idea of document dumps a useless exercise. We’re all so trained to trust text, but we’re going to have to get people (re)used to the idea of verifying sources first. And one way to do that is to flood places like this with bogus docs, which is going to require paying people to do it.

That one is showing by percentage won, not just win/loss.

It has the same problem. What if 106 of the departments each had .1% of the total population, while one department had the remaining 89.4% of the population. So one candidate could win 80% of the vote in the 106 districts but it wouldn’t matter if the other candidate won by “only” 60% in the last district. The map could be a sea of bright red, but the one district with most of the population be the one that mattered. If each district has approximately the area and population that wouldn’t matter — but that’s generally not true.

Germany has an annoyingly decentralized system of elections, there are always some sort of local or state elections going on here. (Three state elections this year and the National elections in September, but that does not count the local and regional ones, or the mayoral elections in various towns and cities)

But for that, there are no issues with voter registration: everyone has a (mandatory) ID, and a single registered address.

You just show up at your local polling place (which is often the pub in smaller villages),
and they check your name off a list. You are already registered.

Sounds much like the Australian system and we don’t find it annoying. Each state has it’s own elections which are never held at the same time as Federal elections. Then within each state there are local council (probably closest is US County) which are held throughout the state on the same date. Allows the voter to concentrate on the issues - local, state, federal rather than have to decide on them all at the same time. We do have a National/Federal vote registration system controlled by an independent authority which covers voting at all levels - and like Germany you just show up at your local voting station - never a pub however (what a good idea), usually a school or church.

We also vote on Saturdays - I will never understand why the US votes on a week day - best way to stifle the vote perhaps.

Anne Hildalgo’s tweet makes me very happy to see Parisians rejecting Le Pen so soundly. What pissed me off, besides her extremist positions on many issues, was Le Pen’s recent cowardly move to distance herself from the political party she and her dad established and maintained for over 40 years. I think she’d gotten a hint before the election that her extremist sh*t was being rejected and tried to transform herself into a moderate. I’m glad the French voters saw through her BS move.

Abstentions were rather high, but the (rough) numbers break down like this:

There were 12m abstentions, three million left their ballot paper blank and one million spoiled theirs.

More than 20million people voted Macron, 10.5m voted Le Pen.

So, roughly, 43% of potential electors voted for Macron, 34% voted for nobody and 22% voted for Le Pen.

And because registration is national and automatic, no state based voter suppression designed to advantage one party over the other.

Registration is not automatic. It’s easier than it used to be, people get automatically registered at majority, but you still have to re-register if you move from one commune to another. You also have to register before the end of the year before the elections, no last-minute registration is possible.

It is, however, pretty easy to register, just bring some proof of residence (an electricity bill, or a letter from someone saying you live with them) and some ID (which everyone has) to your local town hall, fill in a simple form and you’re registered until the next time you move. In some departements you can even do it on-line now.
