With Trump doing his daily routine of sucking all the air out of the room, other headlines get missed.

A big science story today, based on a set of papers, this being one of them:

The age of Homo naledi and associated sediments in the Rising Star Cave, South Africa

New ages for flowstone, sediments and fossil bones from the Dinaledi Chamber are presented. We combined optically stimulated luminescence dating of sediments with U-Th and palaeomagnetic analyses of flowstones to establish that all sediments containing Homo naledi fossils can be allocated to a single stratigraphic entity (sub-unit 3b), interpreted to be deposited between 236 ka and 414 ka. This result has been confirmed independently by dating three H. naledi teeth with combined U-series and electron spin resonance (US-ESR) dating. Two dating scenarios for the fossils were tested by varying the assumed levels of 222Rn loss in the encasing sediments: a maximum age scenario provides an average age for the two least altered fossil teeth of 253 +82/-70 ka, whilst a minimum age scenario yields an average age of 200 +70/-61 ka. We consider the maximum age scenario to more closely reflect conditions in the cave, and therefore, the true age of the fossils. By combining the US-ESR maximum age estimate obtained from the teeth, with the U-Th age for the oldest flowstone overlying Homo naledi fossils, we have constrained the depositional age of Homo naledi to a period between 236 ka and 335 ka. These age results demonstrate that a morphologically primitive hominin, Homo naledi, survived into the later parts of the Pleistocene in Africa, and indicate a much younger age for the Homo naledi fossils than have previously been hypothesized based on their morphology.

This means that shortly before the paleontological records for H. sapiens (the earliest evidence for which is about 200kya), there was another Homo species living in the southern tip of Africa. This species, naledi, was smaller, had a small brain, but may have practiced some toolmaking skills.

The dating of the deposits is important because otherwise anthropologists would have placed naledi much older.

If confirmed, the news that a grand jury has been convened and has started issuing subpoenas suggests that the investigation into the Trump camp’s links with Moscow has entered a new phase.

Under US law, grand juries (which are larger than normal 12-person court juries) have sweeping powers to compel witnesses to appear, to call for the presentation of documents and to issue indictments.

While the Republican majorities in the House and Senate could hold back congressional investigations and a new FBI director to kill off its counter-intelligence investigation, a grand jury is not under Trump’s control. He may not be able to stop the Russian collusion affair from going to court.

Smith addressed the elephant in the Fox newsroom during an April 21 speech at Ole Miss’ Meek School of Journalism, where he was once a student. Sitting in the audience: his father, stepfather and his partner.

The Holly Springs, Miss., native said that for his college years and the first two decades of his career, he didn’t hide his sexuality so much as he just steered clear of the issue entirely. He poured himself into his work because he was unprepared to deal with the consequences.

“A. You’re going to hell for it,” he said, listing the reasons he avoided the subject. “B. You’ll never have any friends again. C. What are you going to tell your family? And by the way, you’re on television on the craziest conservative network on Earth,” he joked.”That will probably put you in front of a brick wall. Of course, none of that was true, but that’s how it felt.”

Grand Juries can return indictments on their own authority but their decision making pretty much all comes down to what evidence the prosecutor decides to put in front of them.

I have never ever said that certain regions should be given up completely but I believe in prioritizing too. If I’m running a Presidential campaign for example, I’d run more ads in your Colorado than neighboring Wyoming.

That’s how I read it too. Belafon’s way of saying we’ve all been in that situation before. I don’t want to come off as I don’t care about the people in those areas but oyu know, I really believe that if they’re going to become lighter red, purple, or even blue, it’s on the people who live there to foster that change and not the national party. And I know AM feels we should be feeding more money into those areas and I just don’t agree because I see that those areas are hostile to the National Democratic Party and that it would actually hurt a candidate to have more ties with the DNC than help. I also believe too that those areas need to show a willingness to listen to us and no one ever talks about that. Rural voters are never told that they need to understand why urbanites support gun control policies, safe and legal abortion, LGBT rights, immigrant rights, etc but we sure as shit are told told ot understand them and honestly I just think that’s unfair and I’m technically a rural voter btw.

Bill O’Reilly’s ex-wife swore in an affidavit that the disgraced Fox News host brutally assaulted her in their Long Island home after she discovered him half-naked and engaging in phone sex, Jezebel has learned.

In the affidavit, which was signed and notarized on October 10, 2011, and later entered as an exhibit in the couple’s divorce proceedings, O’Reilly’s ex-wife Maureen McPhilmy O’Reilly described a sudden spasm of violence on a night in December 2009.

According to McPhilmy’s account, she discovered O’Reilly engaging in phone sex in their bedroom at roughly 10:30 p.m. one evening. O’Reilly then “flew into a fit of rage” and slammed her into a nearby wall, leaving a hole one foot across. He then, the affidavit claims, wrapped his arms around her shoulders, neck, and hands to immobilize her, and violently dragged her out of the bedroom and down a hallway on the second floor of their 4,600-square-foot, $2.4 million home in Manhasset, New York.

O’Reilly went on, the affidavit claims, to drag McPhilmy by the neck down a flight of stairs and through the kitchen, as McPhilmy screamed that he was hurting her. In the kitchen, the affidavit claims, a security guard assigned to protect O’Reilly and his family saw what was going on, at which point O’Reilly stopped the attack. When the guard asked her if she wanted to report the incident to the police, she declined, McPhilmy added.

The guard was startled by O’Reilly’s appearance, McPhilmy wrote, because he was naked from the waist down while attacking her.

He may be right about that but I was trying to point out to him that retaining VA’s governorship and flipping NJ’s is a much bigger priority for them. And I know that comes off snobby but you know what, it’s snobby to treat everyone in a blue state like they’re a fat cat who only has social issues to worry about and not other issues too.

Don’t think so. The Judiciary is separate from the Executive. That is the strength of the tripartite system of the Constitution.

Drumpf can scream and yell, but it’s out of his hands once it’s in the Judicial system.

Firing Comey means nothing when the issue has passed out of the DOJ’s jurisdiction. Once it got into the Federal Court of Eastern Virginia, it left the Executives purview.

Inside the White House, opponents of Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, President Donald Trump’s second national security adviser, want him out. This week, they’ve made their campaign against him public, leaking to reporters details about the rocky relationship he has with his boss and trying to paint him as someone hell-bent on overseas nation-building projects that are doomed to fail. The timing isn’t accidental. The effort to damage McMaster comes as the Trump administration decides what its policy should be in Afghanistan, a debate that’s pitting McMaster against Stephen Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist.

“McMaster is pushing this Afghanistan policy through. I think some people are giving him the rope to get it through, hoping he hangs himself with it,” one senior intelligence official said.

The Afghanistan strategy McMaster is pushing, with the support of Defense Secretary James Mattis, would send roughly 3,000-5,000 U.S. and NATO troops to Afghanistan, according to a separate source familiar with the internal deliberations. These troops would be sent to help bulk up the Afghan National Security Forces, which, after years of U.S. assistance, are still struggling against the Taliban, al Qaeda, and a small Islamic State presence in the country.

According to the Washington Post, the new strategy “would authorize the Pentagon, not the White House, to set troop numbers in Afghanistan and give the military far broader authority to use airstrikes to target Taliban militants.” The hope is that by increasing pressure on the Taliban, it will force them to the negotiating table with more favorable terms for Kabul and Washington. Sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan follows a decision made last year by President Barack Obama, who announced in July that 8,400 U.S. troops would remain in Afghanistan through January 2017 because of the “precarious” security situation there, undoing his previous plan to draw down to 5,500 by the time he left office.

The Washington Post reported that “those opposed to the plan have begun to refer derisively to the strategy as ‘McMaster’s War,’” and this particular criticism is repeated in a handful of negative stories about McMaster that have already cropped up this week. For those plugged into the dicey world of Trump administration power plays, this slur has the hallmarks of a hit job by Bannon’s team. (It’s worth noting that the same people who oppose McMaster are no fans of Mattis’s moderating influence on the president, but he’s seen as politically untouchable for now.)
The first story aimed at weakening McMaster came Sunday from blogger Michael Cernovich, whose reporting has served as a conduit for the alt-right wing of the White House to air its grievances and get ahead of policies it doesn’t like. Cernovich has pushed conspiracy theories and threatened to smear members of the Trump White House if Bannon is ever removed. Still, the White House has given him press credentials, and he attended a White House briefing last month.

But then Comey decided to do his job concerning the Russian influence on the election.

And pressed the issue, dropping a shitpot of evidence into the Eastern Court of Virginia. And was fired for doing exactly what got Drumpf elected.

So the WH is in full panic mode because the money that Drumpf owes to Russians and the leverage that gives the Russians over Drumpf is about to come out. The level of contact that Drumpf surrogates had with the Russians is going to be revealed.

I joined FB around 2010 after a bandmate’s friend posted our gig and helped us fill up the place with her FB buddies.

It is highly useful for posting gigs or organizing sessions/events.

And keeping up with far-flung friends and relatives on the chat.

But for god’s sake, it is not a reliable source of news, nor do I get involved in politics, I tend to delete political tweets, be they pro or anti-Trump.

I have found myself debunking fake news posts by both my liberal nephew and my conservative brother.

If I wanna talk politics, there are plenty of sites like this one.

I’m seeing that one of the new Senate Republican catchphrases on the upcoming healthcare bill is some variation of “… a softer landing…” in ridding our nation of the scourge of healthcare for all. This made me think “What they are saying is that the healthcare plane is going down”. This was followed by “The Republican Senators idea of a soft landing is to hand people parachutes and toss them people out of the plane. The problem is that the parachutes only work for the first hundred feet.”

The states can clean up the bodies as they hit the ground. Problem solving… the Republican way.

I predict mass arrests of protesters and more black people getting shot and killed by police this summer. Not to mention the bombings of Planned Parenthood facilities and the silencing of any street protest by masked armed Nazis.

I wish I was being facetious, but it’s all happening. Right in front of our eyes. Fascism is here, and it’ll be immediately apparent this summer.

One common thing that I see in our rural area is none of them want to be the ones to do it, people have been elected to do that for them. The timing of the firing is curious. Forget curious, it’s critical given that Comey’s investigations were continuing into Russia-Trump (and cronies) connections.

Sessions was involved in this decision, despite his own perjury on Russia-connections. He’s complicit in all this just as surely as Trump is.

Most Americans get their “news” from just a few large corporations, who compete only in the sense of maximizing advertising revenues, not competing on the fidelity of their “news”.

The tax cuts for the wealthy and the corporations - this is why the Republicans are hanging together in light of the Trump mess - will bring a tremendous burden to the US Treasury that will be met by belt tightening, to use a euphemism.

I expect reductions/limitations in all sorts of things, if the tax cuts get pushed through.

Oh, the package will be sold with trickle-down economics, which everyone who isn’t a rube knows is a con. But in the end we’ll be left with increases in debt.

And that means higher interest rates.

And that means for the bottom 90% of America increased costs in anything having to do with money.

And with a likely change in bankruptcy laws, at least for poor people, that means you’ll carry your debt for the rest of your life.

When you are old and can’t take care of yourself - too bad.

Reasonably liberal. I work for the state here in Colorado. Though in my specific office I am the only liberal person here (well the only non BernieBro, Jillbot, or Trumphumper). They all dont pay attention to this unless it is an election year and I’m here in my office beside myself (and my concentration is next to nil).

I’m in my early 30s. Was 17 (senior in HS) when 9/11 happened. This firing of Comey is the biggest thing I’ve witnessed. Yes - I believe this is bigger than 9/11 as 9/11 was an attack, it was shocking but it was a threat outside of the US. This is a threat to all of us from the President and I am losing faith in just about everything this country once stood for.

Freedom of Press - going out the window (thank god that magical balance fairy is around /).

Public rights going away - I dont want to live in a polluted cesspool and I want information freedom (privacy rights).

Critical thinking - is now next to non-existent large swathes of the US - thanks Fox “News” and the deterioration of education (especially in the south).

The only thing saving me is the grand jury. But that process is slow and I’m afraid we will be at a point of no return before that process completes.

And he claims remaining state employees will see a pay increase from the savings of getting rid of a 1,000 employees. If you cut about 0.07% of the state’s employees (percentage based of 125,196 state employees, counting 64,450 in colleges and universities), what percentage pay increase will the remaining employees see?

Honestly, if he’s worried about state employees maybe he should force the General Assembly to fund the Virginia Retirement System instead of writing IOUs in place of the state’s contribution to the system.

Yep. No matter what Trump does, the hypothetical disaster that would be President Hillary is enough in their minds to justify everything. When I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984, I was annoyed that our commencement speaker was the chair of the board of regents, and his plea was to vote for a certain constitutional amendment to the state constitution. It wasn’t until I went to law school two years later and got a handle on the Texas state constitution that I understood why the guy would hijack our commencement for the political announcement, but at the time it was annoying. While I don’t remember precisely what this guy wanted us to vote for, I do remember learning in law school later that the reason married women were allowed to sell their separate property without their husbands’ permission was due to a voter-approved constitutional amendment in 1968. In other words, the Texas constitution has a lot of stuff in it that should be relegated to statute.

However, nobody booed the guy. We were just bored out of our skulls and hot as heck.
