Too bad they don’t realize what that really means.

The US as a chattel State to Russia because the American President is a debt slave to Putin’s cronies.

With Trump doing his daily routine of sucking all the air out of the room, other headlines get missed.

A big science story today, based on a set of papers, this being one of them:

The age of Homo naledi and associated sediments in the Rising Star Cave, South Africa

New ages for flowstone, sediments and fossil bones from the Dinaledi Chamber are presented. We combined optically stimulated luminescence dating of sediments with U-Th and palaeomagnetic analyses of flowstones to establish that all sediments containing Homo naledi fossils can be allocated to a single stratigraphic entity (sub-unit 3b), interpreted to be deposited between 236 ka and 414 ka. This result has been confirmed independently by dating three H. naledi teeth with combined U-series and electron spin resonance (US-ESR) dating. Two dating scenarios for the fossils were tested by varying the assumed levels of 222Rn loss in the encasing sediments: a maximum age scenario provides an average age for the two least altered fossil teeth of 253 +82/-70 ka, whilst a minimum age scenario yields an average age of 200 +70/-61 ka. We consider the maximum age scenario to more closely reflect conditions in the cave, and therefore, the true age of the fossils. By combining the US-ESR maximum age estimate obtained from the teeth, with the U-Th age for the oldest flowstone overlying Homo naledi fossils, we have constrained the depositional age of Homo naledi to a period between 236 ka and 335 ka. These age results demonstrate that a morphologically primitive hominin, Homo naledi, survived into the later parts of the Pleistocene in Africa, and indicate a much younger age for the Homo naledi fossils than have previously been hypothesized based on their morphology.

This means that shortly before the paleontological records for H. sapiens (the earliest evidence for which is about 200kya), there was another Homo species living in the southern tip of Africa. This species, naledi, was smaller, had a small brain, but may have practiced some toolmaking skills.

The dating of the deposits is important because otherwise anthropologists would have placed naledi much older.

But the fallout seemed to take the White House by surprise. Trump made a round of calls around 5 p.m., asking for support from senators. White House officials believed it would be a “win-win” because Republicans and Democrats alike have problems with the FBI director, one person briefed on their deliberations said.

Instead, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told him he was making a big mistake — and Trump seemed “taken aback,” according to a person familiar with the call.

And this one from the Guardian feed is the Coup de grase:

If confirmed, the news that a grand jury has been convened and has started issuing subpoenas suggests that the investigation into the Trump camp’s links with Moscow has entered a new phase.

Under US law, grand juries (which are larger than normal 12-person court juries) have sweeping powers to compel witnesses to appear, to call for the presentation of documents and to issue indictments.

While the Republican majorities in the House and Senate could hold back congressional investigations and a new FBI director to kill off its counter-intelligence investigation, a grand jury is not under Trump’s control. He may not be able to stop the Russian collusion affair from going to court.

But, a grand jury is only an investigative body, correct? Whatever is found, does it not take someone from the AG or his underlings to actually file charges?

So a grand jury can find whatever they want. That does not mean the parties involved will ever see justice.

As if there was any doubt…..
USA Today: Fox News’ Shepard Smith: I didn’t out myself; I was never in

t’s taken two solid weeks for Shepard Smith’s comments about his homosexuality at the University of Mississippi to get national pickup, but in a way, that’s fitting for a man who, for the last decade, never really saw himself as being in the closet.

Smith addressed the elephant in the Fox newsroom during an April 21 speech at Ole Miss’ Meek School of Journalism, where he was once a student. Sitting in the audience: his father, stepfather and his partner.

The Holly Springs, Miss., native said that for his college years and the first two decades of his career, he didn’t hide his sexuality so much as he just steered clear of the issue entirely. He poured himself into his work because he was unprepared to deal with the consequences.

“A. You’re going to hell for it,” he said, listing the reasons he avoided the subject. “B. You’ll never have any friends again. C. What are you going to tell your family? And by the way, you’re on television on the craziest conservative network on Earth,” he joked.”That will probably put you in front of a brick wall. Of course, none of that was true, but that’s how it felt.”

Grand Juries can return indictments on their own authority but their decision making pretty much all comes down to what evidence the prosecutor decides to put in front of them.

That’s how I read it too. Belafon’s way of saying we’ve all been in that situation before. I don’t want to come off as I don’t care about the people in those areas but oyu know, I really believe that if they’re going to become lighter red, purple, or even blue, it’s on the people who live there to foster that change and not the national party. And I know AM feels we should be feeding more money into those areas and I just don’t agree because I see that those areas are hostile to the National Democratic Party and that it would actually hurt a candidate to have more ties with the DNC than help. I also believe too that those areas need to show a willingness to listen to us and no one ever talks about that. Rural voters are never told that they need to understand why urbanites support gun control policies, safe and legal abortion, LGBT rights, immigrant rights, etc but we sure as shit are told told ot understand them and honestly I just think that’s unfair and I’m technically a rural voter btw.

Seems to me Papa Bear has a sex addiction problem….
Jezebel: Ex-Wife Said Bill O’Reilly Attacked Her After She Caught Him Having Phone Sex

Bill O’Reilly’s ex-wife swore in an affidavit that the disgraced Fox News host brutally assaulted her in their Long Island home after she discovered him half-naked and engaging in phone sex, Jezebel has learned.

In the affidavit, which was signed and notarized on October 10, 2011, and later entered as an exhibit in the couple’s divorce proceedings, O’Reilly’s ex-wife Maureen McPhilmy O’Reilly described a sudden spasm of violence on a night in December 2009.

According to McPhilmy’s account, she discovered O’Reilly engaging in phone sex in their bedroom at roughly 10:30 p.m. one evening. O’Reilly then “flew into a fit of rage” and slammed her into a nearby wall, leaving a hole one foot across. He then, the affidavit claims, wrapped his arms around her shoulders, neck, and hands to immobilize her, and violently dragged her out of the bedroom and down a hallway on the second floor of their 4,600-square-foot, $2.4 million home in Manhasset, New York.

O’Reilly went on, the affidavit claims, to drag McPhilmy by the neck down a flight of stairs and through the kitchen, as McPhilmy screamed that he was hurting her. In the kitchen, the affidavit claims, a security guard assigned to protect O’Reilly and his family saw what was going on, at which point O’Reilly stopped the attack. When the guard asked her if she wanted to report the incident to the police, she declined, McPhilmy added.

The guard was startled by O’Reilly’s appearance, McPhilmy wrote, because he was naked from the waist down while attacking her.

Ewwwww…….Brain bleach, STAT!

Don’t think so. The Judiciary is separate from the Executive. That is the strength of the tripartite system of the Constitution.

Drumpf can scream and yell, but it’s out of his hands once it’s in the Judicial system.

Firing Comey means nothing when the issue has passed out of the DOJ’s jurisdiction. Once it got into the Federal Court of Eastern Virginia, it left the Executives purview.

Holy shitfuck if true…..
Just Security: The Knives are out for Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster

Inside the White House, opponents of Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, President Donald Trump’s second national security adviser, want him out. This week, they’ve made their campaign against him public, leaking to reporters details about the rocky relationship he has with his boss and trying to paint him as someone hell-bent on overseas nation-building projects that are doomed to fail. The timing isn’t accidental. The effort to damage McMaster comes as the Trump administration decides what its policy should be in Afghanistan, a debate that’s pitting McMaster against Stephen Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist.

“McMaster is pushing this Afghanistan policy through. I think some people are giving him the rope to get it through, hoping he hangs himself with it,” one senior intelligence official said.

The Afghanistan strategy McMaster is pushing, with the support of Defense Secretary James Mattis, would send roughly 3,000-5,000 U.S. and NATO troops to Afghanistan, according to a separate source familiar with the internal deliberations. These troops would be sent to help bulk up the Afghan National Security Forces, which, after years of U.S. assistance, are still struggling against the Taliban, al Qaeda, and a small Islamic State presence in the country.

According to the Washington Post, the new strategy “would authorize the Pentagon, not the White House, to set troop numbers in Afghanistan and give the military far broader authority to use airstrikes to target Taliban militants.” The hope is that by increasing pressure on the Taliban, it will force them to the negotiating table with more favorable terms for Kabul and Washington. Sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan follows a decision made last year by President Barack Obama, who announced in July that 8,400 U.S. troops would remain in Afghanistan through January 2017 because of the “precarious” security situation there, undoing his previous plan to draw down to 5,500 by the time he left office.

The Washington Post reported that “those opposed to the plan have begun to refer derisively to the strategy as ‘McMaster’s War,’” and this particular criticism is repeated in a handful of negative stories about McMaster that have already cropped up this week. For those plugged into the dicey world of Trump administration power plays, this slur has the hallmarks of a hit job by Bannon’s team. (It’s worth noting that the same people who oppose McMaster are no fans of Mattis’s moderating influence on the president, but he’s seen as politically untouchable for now.)
The first story aimed at weakening McMaster came Sunday from blogger Michael Cernovich, whose reporting has served as a conduit for the alt-right wing of the White House to air its grievances and get ahead of policies it doesn’t like. Cernovich has pushed conspiracy theories and threatened to smear members of the Trump White House if Bannon is ever removed. Still, the White House has given him press credentials, and he attended a White House briefing last month.

Cernovich is behind this?

No no no no no no no no…..

And when The President is removed (doubtful) it’ll be President Mike Pence. Not much better. In fact since he’s actually a competent politician it might be worse.

Gay folks, atheists, Muslims, etc., if Pence becomes president, buy a couple of guns, learn to shoot, take self-defense courses. A nice chunk of the population actively want you dead, be prepared.

I thought the attorneys general, the ones under the AG, are part of the executive branch.

Don’t they have discretion on whether to prosecute or not?

Yes, of course, but when the issue gets transferred into the Federal Courts, the DOJ loses control of the case. The FBI becomes an investigative entity that supplies supportive evidence through their investigations.

That’s what got the WH so freaked out. They no longer controlled the FBI and they had to can Comey.

Curiouser and curiouser as we go down the rabbit hole….
LawNewz: FLASHBACK: Sessions Got ‘Suddenly’ Booted by Clinton’s Attorney General Janet Reno in 1993

The latest faux outrage seized the media-sphere this weekend when news reports noted Attorney General Sessions requested the resignation of those federal United States Attorneys that were yet to resign their posts, as is customary after a change of party in Presidential office. Every United States attorney had notice of this since November 9, 2016, the day after the election. The politically ambitious prosecutor of the Southern District of New York, former chief counsel for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, did a bit of grandstanding before he was fired, but not after opening up his own private twitter account more than a week ago for his anticipated departure from the office. This is commonplace, and the entitled right of the newly elected President. Indeed, a brief history of the timeline of the prosecutors of the Southern District of New York show they were out of office as early as less than a month after the election (Obama) or January (JFK). On top of that, back in 1993, Attorney General Janet Reno gave Jeff Sessions the boot when he was U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama.

Imagine though, if we are hit by a major natural and/or man-made disaster. On the scale of Katrina. Or a major terror attack. One that disrupts services and hinders local authorities over a broad area or for a large population.

Expect that President “I never knew it would be this hard” will be overwhelmed and totally lose it (or just go off and hide at Mar-a-Logo), while local vigilantes feel empowered to take authority in their own hands, along with their assault weapons.

Things could get very, very ugly.

GOP — Grifters, Oligarchs, Putinists.

I don’t think there is anyone in this White House who is willing to tell the truth like John Dean.OTOH, if the investigations continue, there may be rats who will tell the truth to save their necks.

I am old enough to view the FBI with skepticism — it had long been a home of misogynists and racists; certainly the current NY office is not one that should be investigating anything. Let’s hope there are a few independent prosecutors that will persevere and uncover the truth. The House Republicans are dishonest to the core. But perhaps one Republican Senator will step out as a profile in courage.

Both are off the table because Republicans.

Time for bed. But first!

🎵What did we learn on the show tonight, Craig?🎵

Yesterday’s actions will define this WH. The fact that they didn’t think that their actions would affect woke Democrats or the rest of the country is telling.

Of course we think Comey was an asshole for saying he was reopening the investigation of the e-mail bullshit a week before the election. And then saying there was nothing to it.

Of course we were pissed as shit that we believed that he affected the election. But we never put any hard political capital into pushing for his removal. We just seethed because that was all we could do.

But then Comey decided to do his job concerning the Russian influence on the election.

And pressed the issue, dropping a shitpot of evidence into the Eastern Court of Virginia. And was fired for doing exactly what got Drumpf elected.

So the WH is in full panic mode because the money that Drumpf owes to Russians and the leverage that gives the Russians over Drumpf is about to come out. The level of contact that Drumpf surrogates had with the Russians is going to be revealed.

I don’t think this can be stopped.

Think more about Trump crime here at home in the US and NYC.

Preet’s best friend is James Comey

Russian mob crime and money laundering, that is prime FBI territory.

Kinda like Al Capone being brought down by the IRS/FBI for tax evasion,

There’ll be *eight* years of this shit, because citizens of the United States are some of the most heartless folks on the planet.

Trump has led a consequence-free life up to now. He is expert at manipulating people, the media and his business partners. He is a master of creating the illusion of success, wealth and prosperity where none exist.

By selling himself as the “anti-politician”, he has gotten away with violating every rule and convention of politics, campaigning and media relations.

It is entirely possible that he will be re-elected.

Late night thoughts from the left coast…

I’m seeing that one of the new Senate Republican catchphrases on the upcoming healthcare bill is some variation of “… a softer landing…” in ridding our nation of the scourge of healthcare for all. This made me think “What they are saying is that the healthcare plane is going down”. This was followed by “The Republican Senators idea of a soft landing is to hand people parachutes and toss them people out of the plane. The problem is that the parachutes only work for the first hundred feet.”

The states can clean up the bodies as they hit the ground. Problem solving… the Republican way.

Time to smoke another dab. :)

I know that a lot of folks here have been relying on “our system of government” and that all the ills we see will be rooted out within that system. Now? I’m not so sure. I predict mass arrests of protesters and more black people getting shot and killed by police this summer. Not to mention the bombings of Planned Parenthood facilities and the silencing of any street protest by masked armed Nazis.

I wish I was being facetious, but it’s all happening. Right in front of our eyes. Fascism is here, and it’ll be immediately apparent this summer.

The President has already made remarks that a lot of violently inclined bigots have seen as encouraging or empowering.

The AG has made it clear that he will be less strict about dealing with police departments that use or tolerate excessive force.

And we have an administration that is actively highlighting minority and immigrant crime.

Nope, I refuse to believe that. While there are plenty of Trumphumping nuts out there, many Trump supporters are uninformed/misinformed, bitter, angry people who are fine with bad things happening to people they don’t care for. One common thing that I see in our rural area is none of them want to be the ones to do it, people have been elected to do that for them. All they are good for is whining at annoying levels and voting Republicans into office. They aren’t violent and they are too damned lazy to go shooting up things. They have the random nuts they encourage to go do that for them, no need to for them leave the house or sully their hands.

Unfortunately, people are going to get hurt (and die) but it isn’t the end of the world. Yet. :)

Ok, as I mentioned earlier, yesterday was big science news day, the publishing of some key papers about the new species Homo naledi.

Quite a bit was published. For the lay person there is a podcast:

Meet Homo naledi
mp3 download: MP3 Audio

Don’t like the host’s use of the phrase “less evolved”, but overall a good podcast with interviews with key scientists.

Discussion of the importance of the discoveries in figuring out human evolution:
Homo naledi and Pleistocene hominin evolution in subequatorial Africa

The species definition itself:
Homo naledi, a new species of the genus Homo from the Dinaledi Chamber, South Africa

The dating of the deposits:
The age of Homo naledi and associated sediments in the Rising Star Cave, South Africa
in which the window for the skeletons puts it right before the emergence of our own species, which is the shocking news.

A second discovery of bones of the species not far away from the first:
New fossil remains of Homo naledi from the Lesedi Chamber, South Africa

This paper has several neat images of comparative anatomy, my favorite one being of the lower mandible:
Image: elife-24232-fig10-v1.jpg

Also a nearly complete skull from the second site:
Image: elife-24232-fig5-v1.jpg

All of the papers are of course technical, but the podcast is straightforward. A documentary was done last year I believe on the the discovery of the bones in the first site. There are several videos on youtube about the Rising Star expedition, including Berger giving a presentation on the discovery of the site:

I do not see a bloodbath as inevitable, but it would become a lot more likely if there were some major natural/man made catastrophe, and even more so if there were a major terrorist attack that could be attributed to Islamists or immigrants/foreigners.

And if we wind up with a Katrina-like situation with public services and order disrupted over large areas or for a large population, we are likely to see vigilantes out there making parts of the US look like Somalia, shooting up anything that they found suspicious, which would basically be anyone with dark skin or a “liberal” appearance.

Expect that President “I never knew it would be this hard” will be overwhelmed and totally lose it (or just go off and hide at Mar-a-Logo), while local vigilantes feel empowered to take authority in their own hands, along with their assault weapons.

Things could get very, very ugly.

If the San Andreas fault goes, Republicans would cheer and say it’s Gawd’s judgement on evil California.

But if the New Madrid fault goes, those same Republican Bible Beating Boobs would blame that on Gawd’s punishing America for letting Gays get married…

Either way, more people would probably get killed in the ensuing armed chaos than in the actual disaster.

It isn’t so much that he is their stooge or is executing their orders.

Trump is just ensuring that America remains hapless and dysfunctional in all areas ranging from foreign and domestic policy, trade policy to military policy. That allows them a free hand to do whatever they want, wherever they want with minimal interference on our part.

The Republicans like Ryan see Trump as their means to roll back every progressive achievement accomplished in the last century. That includes Social Security, Medicare, Civil Rights, the 19th Amendment, Progressive Income Tax.

Then they will reward Trump by abolishing the 22nd Amendment.

This is a point we have to keep hammering:

President Donald Trump weighed firing his FBI director for more than a week. When he finally pulled the trigger Tuesday afternoon, he didn’t call James Comey. He sent his longtime private security guard to deliver the termination letter in a manila folder to FBI headquarters.

He had grown enraged by the Russia investigation, two advisers said, frustrated by his inability to control the mushrooming narrative around Russia.

Comey’s firing was entirely done to stop the Russia investigation.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in NYC metro area.

Turns out those were the days.

Now, every day reveals another layer of GOP complicity in Trump’s gutting of the Constitution, the oath of office, and their obligations to defend the nation against threats foreign and domestic.

Trump and his cronies is that clear and present danger.

Comey’s firing was entirely about Russia, no matter how he and the GOP attempt to spin it. There’s lots of GOP flack claiming that Democrats are hypocritical over wanting to see Comey gone and now complaining that Comey is gone.

The thing is that Democrats are consistent - it’s all about the timing. They can be critical of Comey’s judgment to time the letter about Clinton emails and not informing the public that Trump’s people were under investigation AND be critical of Trump’s firing of Comey for actions that occurred weeks and months ago.

The timing of the firing is curious. Forget curious, it’s critical given that Comey’s investigations were continuing into Russia-Trump (and cronies) connections.

Sessions was involved in this decision, despite his own perjury on Russia-connections. He’s complicit in all this just as surely as Trump is.

The GOP who are silent, would have been calling for Clinton’s scalp and drawing up impeachment had she been the one to fire the FBI director who was investigating Clinton (and admin) malfeasance, let alone connections to foreign influence and all the things we know so far relating to Flynn (but which applies to Sessions, Kushner, Trump, and all the rest).

The GOP wont move forward with a special investigation. They wont move forward with impeachment against Trump. They sit in fear of their own voters, who they’ve radicalized over decades of nonstop lies about Democrats, government, and that means that they’re complicit in Trump’s criminality and actions that repeatedly violate the US Constitution and their oaths of office. By not taking steps to defend the nation from threats foreign and domestic - and Trump is the nexus of both - the GOP shows that they are incapable of showing any leadership, let alone fulfill their own oaths and obligations.

That means that unless and until Congress reverts to Democratic party control, this is gonna stew. The GOP has shown that it lacks a spine or any willingness to uphold the Constitution when it comes to Trump and his cronies. They think it’s more important to throw chaff in the air and complain about leakers, ignoring what evidence they’ve provided (the Yates/Clapper hearing was proof of this).

So sick of this. You can think Comey acted improperly and still think it was messed up beyond reason that Trump fired him during an investigation of Trump.

In a sane world this would be a Captain Obvious moment. In Foxworld, myopia and loyalty demand this be outright inexplicable. Smh.

Hey folks, someone yesterday said that this administration was too crazy for The West Wing.

I know that 24 is a controversial show, but the 24: Live Another Day miniseries involved a President who was suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s. His Chief of Staff, also his son-in-law, forged the President’s signature on an order extraordinary renditioning Jack Bauer.

The Russian ambassador finds out about this and proceeds to blackmail the Chief of Staff.

So, yeah, 24 beat reality to this story.

Not just in the Pacific are the explorations going on under the sea.

Off the US east coast, looking for methane seeps among other things:

[Embedded content]

Not meaning to raise any alarm, but several continental shelves are areas rich in buried methane clathrates.
Methane clathrates which are quite (read: infamously) dependent on temperature as to how much methane they can hold.
And the deposits aren’t exactly small. And when the methane goes, so does the clathrate integrity, and anything resting on it.

TL;DR one-two punch, decent sized tsunami and a massive release of a GHG 18 times more potent that carbon dioxide…

We are in unprecedented territory, at least from what I can recall of reading of the past.

There were bigger crises (Civil War), but this is different.

Strange that we live in a time when so much good could be done with the tools we have made, but our nation chooses instead to just give up caring about responsibility in the highest offices in the land.

This is not Nixon again. Back then the Democratic party was powerful, controlled Congress.

Another strangeness of our time, which previous eras did not have, is that our means of decision making is very quick, and news, or gossip, or innuendo, or slander, now can be passed around in a matter of minutes, to millions of people.

Most Americans get their “news” from just a few large corporations, who compete only in the sense of maximizing advertising revenues, not competing on the fidelity of their “news”.

We really are entering a new era, one of the oligarchy of the corporate boards, all interlocking. Ironically, the only competitor to them is a new form of fascism that relies on demonizing Mexicans and Muslims.

And even the college students are not going to fight back.

Most of them are under a mountain of debt that they are afraid will sink them if they don’t get a high paying job.

And btw, the Democrats here are as guilty as the Republicans. By stressing that the reason to go to college is to get a good paying job, the goal now is to get a good paying job, and failing that becomes a critical life failure.

I missed the protest era of the Vietnam war in college. When I went to school we just had to worry about Carter then Reagan. It was not a very motivating time for college students to protest anything.

The increase in personal debt (both college students and in general) now guarantees that individuals will feel forced to comply with whatever their employers/government tells them to do.

And it’s going to get worse.

The tax cuts for the wealthy and the corporations - this is why the Republicans are hanging together in light of the Trump mess - will bring a tremendous burden to the US Treasury that will be met by belt tightening, to use a euphemism.

I expect reductions/limitations in all sorts of things, if the tax cuts get pushed through.

Oh, the package will be sold with trickle-down economics, which everyone who isn’t a rube knows is a con. But in the end we’ll be left with increases in debt.

And that means higher interest rates.

And that means for the bottom 90% of America increased costs in anything having to do with money.

And with a likely change in bankruptcy laws, at least for poor people, that means you’ll carry your debt for the rest of your life.

When you are old and can’t take care of yourself - too bad.

Reasonably liberal. I work for the state here in Colorado. Though in my specific office I am the only liberal person here (well the only non BernieBro, Jillbot, or Trumphumper). They all dont pay attention to this unless it is an election year and I’m here in my office beside myself (and my concentration is next to nil).

I’m in my early 30s. Was 17 (senior in HS) when 9/11 happened. This firing of Comey is the biggest thing I’ve witnessed. Yes - I believe this is bigger than 9/11 as 9/11 was an attack, it was shocking but it was a threat outside of the US. This is a threat to all of us from the President and I am losing faith in just about everything this country once stood for.

Freedom of Press - going out the window (thank god that magical balance fairy is around /).

Public rights going away - I dont want to live in a polluted cesspool and I want information freedom (privacy rights).

Critical thinking - is now next to non-existent large swathes of the US - thanks Fox “News” and the deterioration of education (especially in the south).

The only thing saving me is the grand jury. But that process is slow and I’m afraid we will be at a point of no return before that process completes.

I’m not sure that is highly significant. The emission standards do restrain the oil and gas companies.
The upside is that they didn’t want to be prevented from regulating methane in the future.

I’d call my Senators, except they’re both Democrats who agree that there is a need for an independent prosecutor.

Meanwhile, my district is represented by a first-term GOP hack who spent time here at home just a few months ago trying to cover his ass on Trump. Calling him to demand anything would be a waste.

You have to do it so that he knows there is opposition. If they don’t hear, they think that their constituents don’t care.

OFFS.

Gillespie’s proposal to shrink the state’s payroll without layoffs is part of a broader reorganization plan that Gillespie said could make Virginia the “best managed state in the country” by modernizing government, improving customer service and creating a better “corporate culture.”

You know what I don’t associate with businesses that cut thousands of jobs? Improved customer service. In fact, I generally see the exact opposite, as the people who are left find themselves buried under paperwork, dealing with bureaucratic tangles because the people who used to be there to sort it all out are now gone, and stressed the fuck out because they’re expected to do the work that two or more people used to handle.

Oh, and further down:

After going into great detail Wednesday morning about his plan to improve the inner workings of the state bureaucracy, Gillespie was asked for his response to Trump’s stunning decision to fire FBI director James Comey Tuesday night.

The news out of Washington, coming amid FBI scrutiny of possible ties between Trump’s campaign and Russian operatives, has transfixed political observers, but Gillespie said he needed to get more information before commenting.

“I just have not had a chance to focus on it,” Gillespie said.

Another profile in courage./////

If the lamestream media actually had a brain cell in its collective heads, they should have immediately asked which state agencies will see the brunt of those cuts.

And he claims remaining state employees will see a pay increase from the savings of getting rid of a 1,000 employees. If you cut about 0.07% of the state’s employees (percentage based of 125,196 state employees, counting 64,450 in colleges and universities), what percentage pay increase will the remaining employees see?

Honestly, if he’s worried about state employees maybe he should force the General Assembly to fund the Virginia Retirement System instead of writing IOUs in place of the state’s contribution to the system.

I saw a story about a taxi driver who was driving people to Canada, even those who had legal status here in the USA. But then there’s this guy, who was also driving people to Canada and overcharging:

For the last several months, the route north has been marked by desperation. Migrants lacking legal status in the United States have been fleeing to Canada by taking buses to Plattsburgh, N.Y., and then hailing taxis to a country road that dead-ends in an unofficial border crossing.

It is a 25-mile cab ride to a new life, for which the going rate is $50 to $75. But one cabdriver was charging $100 to $300 in cash, depending on his mood. And his passengers were not in a position to complain.

But after a two-month investigation into the price-gouging practices of several taxi companies ferrying passengers to the border in Champlain, N.Y., the New York State attorney general, Eric T. Schneiderman, is to announce on Wednesday that he has obtained a court order against Christopher Ray Crowningshield, the owner and operator of Northern Taxi.

Mr. Crowningshield had to pay the state $2,500. He must also post fares in the two taxis he operates, cannot charge more than 10 times the Plattsburgh maximum fare, $7.50, and must call the attorney general’s office each time he picks up a passenger headed for Roxham Road.

“This case sends a strong message: We won’t hesitate to protect our most vulnerable neighbors, in Plattsburgh, or New York City, or anywhere else around New York,” Mr. Schneiderman said in an email.

Despite its valiant efforts, the Trump administration has failed to corner the market for meatheads in America.

The Bernie Supporters I know are still happy they didn’t vote for Clinton. They see Trump as the punishment this country deserves. They are saying they had integrity and sent a message to the Democratic party. Bottom line to any Berner is the Democrats screwed up by running the most unpopular Republican-Lite-Neocon ever in Hillary. And they are sticking to it. It is written!

That is the state of America.

Yep. No matter what Trump does, the hypothetical disaster that would be President Hillary is enough in their minds to justify everything. The possibility of what Hillary could have been guilty of outweighs the realities of what Trump actually is doing every time. They have no fucking remorse whatsoever. And they feel like they’re just getting larger, and larger, abetted by the media who is intent on making Hillary out as the end all be all of all Dem woes and the sole reason for Trump’s victory.

Time for the media to lean the fuck into it. Scrutinize his fat ass until he can’t take it any more.

Would he pull a Palin? Bomb another country? Blurt out something really incriminating?

Let’s find out.

Trump will definitely try. The only remaining question is whether or not other players in the system will stop him.

When I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984, I was annoyed that our commencement speaker was the chair of the board of regents, and his plea was to vote for a certain constitutional amendment to the state constitution. It wasn’t until I went to law school two years later and got a handle on the Texas state constitution that I understood why the guy would hijack our commencement for the political announcement, but at the time it was annoying. While I don’t remember precisely what this guy wanted us to vote for, I do remember learning in law school later that the reason married women were allowed to sell their separate property without their husbands’ permission was due to a voter-approved constitutional amendment in 1968. In other words, the Texas constitution has a lot of stuff in it that should be relegated to statute.

However, nobody booed the guy. We were just bored out of our skulls and hot as heck.

If not already answered…make sure you click the little “meta image” box in the page creation window.

That’s why all GOPers from Senator Grassley on down to Kellyanne are yelling that the media and everyone needs to get over it, stop asking questions, about Russia, about DT appointments and firings, about anything. They’re really trying hard these conservative, family value, character-counts wingnut supporters of DT.

Private enterprise has captured our political system and is going to kill it.

Capitalism was content under Hitler, happy under Mussolini, very happy under Franco and delirious under General Pinochet. - John Ralston Saul

If that observation is true, and I’m inclined to think so, the joy the business community is displaying demonstrates the US is well down the road to fascism.

And still he thinks they’re treating him wrong.

A few well-placed jabs may do the same as the media dogging him en masse. He thinks he’s entitled to 100% fealty, and anything less is seen as total betrayal.

We don’t need all of the media to turn on him. A few loud ones may do the trick.
