CNN: Comey Was Fired Because He Was Stepping Up the Investigation Into Trump’s Russian Ties

Trump follows up by inviting the Russian ambassador to the Oval Office

Would you be surprised to learn that Trump’s stated reason for firing FBI director James Comey was yet another lie?

Washington (CNN)There are two reasons why President Donald Trump fired James Comey, according to a source close to the now-former FBI director:

  1. Comey never provided the President with any assurance of personal loyalty.
  2. The fact that the FBI's investigation into possible Trump team collusion with Russia in the 2016 election was accelerating.

The official White House version of what happened is that deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, fresh on the job, wrote a memo expressing concern about the way Comey had handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation. But mounting evidence suggests Comey was actually fired because of the Russian investigation.

The idea that the director of the FBI should swear an oath of personal loyalty to the president is outrageous and un-American, of course, but then that also describes Trump himself.

So how did our so-called president spend the day after firing the man who was leading the investigation into his ties to Russia?

By inviting Russia’s foreign minister to a private meeting in the Oval Office, at the special request of Vladimir Putin himself.

The chummy White House visit—photos of the president yukking it up with Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak were released by the Russian Foreign Ministry since no U.S. press was allowed to cover the visit—had been one of Putin’s asks in his recent phone call with Trump, And indeed the White House acknowledged this to me later Wednesday. “He chose to receive him because Putin asked him to,” a White House spokesman said of Trump’s Lavrov meeting. “Putin did specifically ask on the call when they last talked.”

Yes, you read that right. Trump banned the US media from covering the event, and invited TASS photographers into the White House instead.

He’s literally rubbing America’s noses in it.

That’d be a former Deputy Director of the CIA.

I’d concur. But it’s damned scary and troubling that Trump excluded US media from the meeting at the White House , all while putting the Russians media in a position to be the exclusive media for the meeting.

The picture being painted is pretty clear: Trump wanted Comey to be his attack dog and he was having none of it. He came into office figuring that Comey’s 11th hour October Surprise had been a move to put him in the good graces of the new boss and thus treated Comey as such. But then the FBI investigation didn’t go away, despite Trump’s insistence that it do so, and was actually widening and deepening. Worse, Trump’s obsession with the leaks in his administration and his belief that they are being committed by a shadowy cabal of government employees loyal to Obama was getting no play outside of the GOP.

It seems that the request for more resources was the last straw, as Trump bellowed “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome director?!” and Rosenstein dutifully complied.

And people think Trump will be impeached. It would take a literal act of God - the Second Coming of Jesus - for that to happen. The Republicans will stall, bluster, talk big, and wait until the furor dies away. There is nothing on this earth he could do that would cause them to, even reluctantly, turn against him far enough to initiate impeachment proceedings.

In the long-shot event that the DNC reclaims the House next November, the odds of impeachment are fairly good. But even in the most optimistic scenario of next November, the DNC is not in danger of winning a solid 67 votes in the Senate. And Trump is a man so detached from reality that there’s no chance he will follow Nixon’s example and resign. He will use every tool in his arsenal (legal or illegal) to prevent Republicans from voting to remove him from office.

So yes, it will probably take divine intervention to remove the man from office unwillingly.

True — but midterm elections have a very different turnout pattern. How do you think Rostenkowski lost his absolutely safe seat in 1994 to a no-name Republican? You get enough people really angry and your supporters are disheartened, the other side may win the election. Of course, during a Presidential year, the seat is likely to switch back, but maybe not..

Well Trump has one thing that Pence doesn’t and that’s a lot of pull with their base. Pence when Trump picked him was struggling to win re-election as governor of Indiana. That’s my only guess. That or their hope is to get enough out of Trump and then throw him to the wolves.

We need to get Pence gone too — which unfortunately gives us Ryan, who at least isn’t a theocrat. Pence had to have known about the Flynn ties to Russia or he’s an absolute idiot. Or maybe both.

Trump is actually uniquely qualified to be the Voice of the GOP Pig People. He’s a rich asshole who has been totally enthusiastic about being a rich asshole his entire life. There aren’t all that many of those types, actually. Most rich assholes have self-preservation instincts that lead them to try to rule from the shadows.

This is potentially a significant issue all on its own - Flynn faces all kinds of scrutiny and likely prosecution over his various actions - the lies, the omissions, etc., to say nothing of being a foreign agent advising Trump before, during, and after the election.

Despite firing Flynn, Trump still wants to have communications with him. There’s no way in hell any lawyer would ever allow that. But we all here know Trump, and he’d find a way to communicate with Flynn, and that too would be obstruction of justice and interfering with a federal investigation.

It’d be imperative to know whether the WH contacted Flynn at any point after the firing.

One thing I have noticed today from the Dems, 2 or 3 times has been the use of the I word. Couched in terms like “we are a long way from it but, this is the sort of thing that led to Nixon’s impeachment” They’ve avoided it like the plague in the most part

Keep an ear out for it. It sounds like some framing and anchoring going on. If it slowly builds over the next few weeks then things start to get real.

Because Trump is a submoronic cypher, the perfect Play-Doh President that the long-suffering archconservative GOPers can use to get what they want without dealing with complications they might have with a President Pence.

“Complications” such as intelligence, knowledge on what being President actually entails, self-awareness, or a soul (dark and twisted, though it may be).

Wingnuts absolutely loved leakers when they were “whistleblowers.” That’s how they got all their “scandals” during the Obama years: Relying upon an abundance of “inside sources” to pad nothingburgers into “the next Watergate!” Hell, they went absolutely apeshit when they found out a reporter was under DOJ investigation for getting classified information from “sources.” The majority of “Emailgate” was “sources” helping them sell stories about how the FBI was hot on Hillary’s case and the indictments were coming “any day now.” Remember the “inside source” that told them that there were 150 agents dedicated to the investigation and they would all resign en-masse if Lynch didn’t issue indictments?

Pence won’t get the benefit of the hard-wired GOP instinct to cringe and scrape before their betters (i.e., the rich). IMO this is a big part of why Trump’s approval ratings are invincible among Republicans. You can buy Trump and you can frighten Trump. Pence is the sort of vicious fanatic who just wants to take everyone else down with him in his flight to God’s clammy embrace. Not great choices - but I prefer incoherent and self-destructive corruption to organized and pure fanaticism.

The especially hilarious part is that the Trumpers do a lot to actually hurt themselves by changing their stories by the hour. The fact that the only paper trail showing Trump’s displeasure is dated the same day he was fired undercuts the idea that this is something that’s been growing over a period of months.

Do you have what it takes to buy Trump, because I don’t. Trump will bomb things just to try to change the subject.

On the other hand, the fanatic stuff Pence would try to pull can be hamstrung by the ACLU.

Here’s what I don’t get: if Trump is impeached, you get Pence. Pence gives you all of Trump’s policies (probably worse), but more stable and with at least a modicum of understanding on how the govt needs to be run. Why go to the mat for Trump?

I think there’s a decent chance that there’ve been a lot of crimes committed in the process of getting Trump into the White House — and a lot of people in Congress actively participated. If there’s a serious investigation, large chunks of the Republican Party could go to prison. I think that’s why they’re going to the mat for Trump. They’re not trying to protect him — they’re trying to protect themselves.

Expanding a little bit on how I view this maladministration:

Trump is the lecherous, egomaniac warlord who goes along with the Taliban to keep his supply of cash, drugs and sex-slaves flowing. Pence is the mullah who decides where the bombs go and who the assassins target - and then praises the terrorists as martyrs. Sure, you’d prefer to deal with neither, but you might occasionally be able to talk to the warlord; the mullah isn’t someone you can get through to.

I’m torn, in a way. Trump is now seen as an illegitimate president for 100 different reasons and his incompetence means he’s unable to get things like the Muslim Ban through. I think he’s better for the Dem’s policies than Pence as a result.

But I put country over party. Trump is a threat to our democracy and I’m fairly certain at this point that he’s a traitor as well. He is completely unhinged.

For the good of the COUNTRY, he has to go, even if he’s easier to control than Pence.

Here’s the thing for me: I don’t think more than a handful of those in the GOP presently engaged in the cover-up had any part in any crimes committed. I think that, especially for members of the leadership, this is about what they feel is the survival of the GOP past 2020. Remember how much success the DNC had in 2006 running against the “Culture of Corruption”? Most of that was peanuts compared to active collusion with a foreign gov’t to flip the results of a presidential election. That’s why the GOP is prepared to commit political seppuku by blocking any and all investigations: Because they know that what they’re sitting on could send them to the political wilderness for a generation or more.

I was just thinking the same thing: I wonder if this is much worse and much deeper than just Trump’s investors purchasing a President. I’m wondering if maybe half to a third of the whole damned government is tied up with this. Where else is Russian money going? And for how long has it been flowing?

I understand the base motivation of keeping Trump alive so he can rubber-stamp all the Republican social Darwinism fantasies. And, it’s not unexpected that the GOP has fallen so far that there isn’t even a speck of statesmanship among the whole fecking lot. But statistically, there shouldn’t be this many Republicans in hiding… Should there?

How deep does this rabbit hole go? Are Dems scared to act because they’re gutless, or because if they dig too deep, half of their “colleagues” are going to prison?

After all, what have they to lose by accepting a pardon from the Yam on his way out the door? If Trump goes, Pence will go. Besides his previously mentioned shortcomings, Pence is a serious theocrat and serious theocrats make some, actually many, elements of the business establishment nervous. Oh, fundyism is fine for scaring the peasants away from unions and enviromentalists, or for getting a tool like Reagan or W. elected, but the real deal is scary. With Ryan as the successor, the Republican establishment will have no incentive to go to the wall for Pence, and would probably even try for mea culpa media points by making a clean sweep of it. Never mind that Ryan and the rest of the establishment toadied to the Trump thing and did everything they could to get it elected.

I’d concur. But it’s damned scary and troubling that Trump excluded US media from the meeting at the White House , all while putting the Russians media in a position to be the exclusive media for the meeting.

They’re all so fucking stupid and/or incompetent, it makes my teeth hurt:

The administration official also said the White House had been misled about the role of the Russian photographer. Russian officials had described the individual as Lavrov’s official photographer without disclosing that he also worked for Tass.

“We were not informed by the Russians that their official photographer was dual-hatted and would be releasing the photographs on the state news agency,” the administration official said.

I have been seeing several posts on my FB feed that Erik Paulsen (R-MN-03) has been calling for an independent investigation into Trump’s Russia ties in the wake of Comey’s firing. Why couldn’t he have voted against the second round of the AHCA? Bastard.

The leader could maybe strip him of any committee chairmanships, but short of a recall there isn’t any way to fire them usually.

There are many more murderous gun-toting fundies than there are responsible GOP businessmen. I wouldn’t bet much on Pence falling with Trump. Right now, the most people have on Pence is a willingness to lie shamelessly to cover Trump’s ass. That’s not going to be enough to wreck him the way he deserves to be wrecked.

The media should start writing a lot of fawning stories about how Pence would be a great replacement for Trump. After three weeks of that, Trump would blow up and demand that his staff find a way to get him out of the picture.

Comey’s press conference was a travesty, but he didn’t “usurp” jack shit with regards to the AG’s authority, as Rosenstein charged in his letter. That clusterfuck started with Bill Clinton’s idiotic decision to climb aboard Lynch’s plane.

One little point of light:

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach has lost his appeal and has been ordered to turn over documents from his meeting with President Donald Trump to the ACLU by Friday…

requiring Kobach to hand over the documents to the American Civil Liberties Union as part of an ongoing voting rights lawsuit against his office.

Kobach met with Trump in November and was photographed carrying a document labeled as a strategic plan for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The photograph revealed a reference to voting rolls. The ACLU has sought access to the documents, contending that if Kobach lobbied Trump on changes to federal voting law it would be relevant to the case.

Kobach is a scum-sucking asshole.

It’s time for the ACLU to blow the dust off of section 2 of the 14th Amendment!

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.

And how does that distinguish him from any other Kansan Republican and almost all Republicans in the House and Senate?

Hmmm—that’s a tough one. I guess his Crosscheck makes him inherently and observably evil as opposed to some of the others. Don’t get me wrong, I hate them all with the heat of a thousand suns.

This Ducks-Oilers series has been incredible. As a nominal Ducks fan, oven got to say it’s almost almost a shame its going to end tonight

Thank you Ducks, for doing what was needed.

I’m now rooting for the Predators. :) Nothing personal.
