Laughing into Darkness

Well, humor is the great thing, the saving thing, after all.—Mark Twain

Twain for as long as I’ve known him has been true to his word, and so I’m careful never to find myself too far out of his reach. The Library of America volumes of his Collected Tales, Sketches, Speeches, and Essays (1852-1910) stand behind my desk on a shelf with the dictionaries and the atlas. On days when the news both foreign and domestic is moving briskly from bad to worse, I look to one or another of Twain’s jests to spring the trap or lower a rope, to summon, as he is in the habit of doing, a blast of laughter to blow away the “peacock shams” of the world’s “colossal humbug.”

Laughter was Twain’s stock in trade, and for 30 years as bestselling author and star attraction on America’s late-nineteenth-century lecture stage, he produced it in sufficient quantity to make bearable the acquaintance with grief that he knew to be generously distributed among all present in the Boston Lyceum or a Tennessee saloon, in a Newport drawing room as in a Nevada brothel. Whether the audience was sober or drunk, topped with top hats or snared in snakebitten boots, Twain understood it likely in need of a remedy to cover its losses.

Shakespeare:

But man, proud man,
Dressed in a little brief authority,
Most ignorant of what he’s most assured,
His glassy essence, like an angry ape,
Plays such fantastic tricks before high heaven
As make the angels weep; who, with our spleens,
Would all themselves laugh mortal.

“Dressed in a little brief authority,”

What a line.

Coming from a background deep in such Fundamentalist Christian ideology, I can assure you that her contempt for those in the room is very real and part of her overall Entitlement culture that her Fundamentalist belief entails. Backup a cretin like Trump is a-OK as long as it forwards “The Lord’s Work.”

Referring to a woman doing her job not by her name but by her relationship to a man can be sexist af. We know that Charles would refer to that person as “Huckabee’s son” if that were the case so we know that sexism wasn’t the point. It is, however, not an entirely illegitimate argument if offered in sincerity (which is probably wasn’t).

Except for the fact that she probably only got the job through nepotism in the first place. Are we no longer allowed to call Ivanka Trump’s daughter either?

re: #102 Belafon

The one reason “Huckabee’s daughter” is a good name for her is that we know this is the only way she got the job. Other than that, we probably should be just using her last name.

And also using her last name right now leads to all sorts of confusion with Bernie Sanders (at least for me) and so. Huckabee-Sanders is a lot of characters for Twitter. There’s no good solution. I don’t think Charles was being sexist. I do think allegro’s point is valid. Twitter sucks for nuanced discussion.

I agree with everything you said.

How about when that woman is a member of a cult that makes women the property of their fathers and husbands.

Doesn’t matter. One instance of sexism doesn’t not make another one okay.

This man is a beautiful, beautiful troll and his Instagram account gives me great pleasure every day.

What they were thinking:
1. Carter — May the Lord have mercy on your soul
2. Clinton — I should have tried that reality TV gig
3. Obama — I always thought Americans were better than this but sometimes I’m wrong.
4. Bush — Miss me yet?

6’8”, says Mrs. FBW, who read it somewhere.

Comey is seriously incredibly tall. Towers over both Obama and Trump, who are not short. Looks like a goddamn tank, and his hands are gigantic — waitaminute, I think I know why Trump fired him…

True.

I really had no idea how tall he is until it was mentioned here, and even then, I had to fact-check it.

Okay, not to get all catty and ‘making fun of appearance’, but looking at the men in that pic, my thought is ‘Vertical stripes are only slimming if there aren’t too many of them”.

One other note—she maintains two twitter accounts:
@SarahHuckabee and @SHSanders45. The Sarah Huckabee account often retweet the SHSanders45 tweets, so apparently sometimes she feels fine with the Huckabee designation, sometimes she kinda hides it.

All times—fuck her and her lying mouth.

There’s literally a Christianist cult backing Trump. They want us to be afraid of all Muslims, when our own Christianist fanatics are much more dangerous than the average Muslim.

and when it is time, they will Throw Trump overboard and put President Pence into Power.

and his Power will not derive from the Constitution or the Will of the People, but rather from their interpretation of The Will of God

The Christianists had to make their move, because they know that religious extremism becomes a harder and harder sell over time as we learn more. I just hope there aren’t enough of them to actually succeed in creating their theocratic republic.

We need to tell the reactionary far-right not to move to Russia.
