Yeah, this is the line I hear ad nauseam from trump chumps and BoBers alike: “Red-baiting! McCarthyism! If there was any real evidence of collusion, it would’ve been leaked to the Washington Post months ago!!!11!”

And I must confess, I was beginning to think something similar - no smoking gun exists, at least, not one simple and obvious enough to make a dent in the American consciousness.

…but if didn’t…why the hell is trump now acting like it does?! o_O

I feel like what Olbermann is advocating here could be deeply counter-productive. That it would only destabilize the US further and open the opposition to Trump to charges of rank hypocrisy. I understand where he’s coming from but I feel like if we’re going to crawl out the other side of this in any kind of viable condition as a nation state we’ll need to do it on our own.

Even after Comey’s efforts to make him President, he still demands endless displays of loyalty because the pseudo-President himself is proud of owing nothing to any man. And until this week, Comey gave those assurances to him. I guess it might be interesting in an academic sort of way to find out which imposition of authority pushed him over the edge, but until practical results ensue this will have no real-world consequences.

We do. The only way I think this nation gets fixed is the way Germany was fixed in 1945, with someone else’s flag flying over Washington and someone else rewriting our laws. The citizens who cooperate with those occupiers will be forever resented, but our minority citizens are used to that, so what’s the downside?

Pennsylvania just got turned down as well for disaster relief following the massive winter storm.
President Trump denies Pa.’s disaster relief request for March snowstorm

President Donald Trump has denied Pennsylvania’s request for federal disaster aid to help cover more than $7 million in costs associated with March’s snowstorm.

“This disaster declaration would have provided much-needed financial assistance to hard-hit communities in northeastern Pennsylvania,” Gov. Tom Wolf said Thursday, in a written statement.

The Trump administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the denial.

Last month, Trump approved aid for a winter storm that struck Utah in February. That storm cost Utah roughly $6 million, according to that state’s Division of Emergency Management.

In a letter regarding Pennsylvania’s request, FEMA Acting Administrator Robert J. Fenton wrote, “it has been determined that the damage from this event was not of such severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the commonwealth and affected local governments.”

Something occurred to me, regarding Trump being blindsided by Dems and others who hated what Comey did WRT the election, but who object to his firing. Because one of Trump’s big motivators is revenge (like wining and dining Mitt Romney, destroying his dignity only to choose somebody else), he would naturally assume everyone else works that way, so he’d figure the Democrats would also be primarily motivated by revenge.

There’s a story that when Stalin died and Kruschev consolidated power, those who had opposed him hid out, expecting him to have them shot., and they were surprised when he didn’t.

He told them, “You measure people by your own yardstick.”

Do you feel it? The steady drip, drip, drip, of inevitability that this Administration is falling to pieces and will eventually be leaving the stage?

I do. These chumps were so woefully ill-prepared to govern that the WH staff is half full, the Cabinet offices and management teams are less than half full, and because their boss is out of control, they are unable to present policy points on a daily basis.

(“He tweeted what this morning? No! Well fuck me naked, get everyone in here to so we can plan how to respond to it before we send Spicy or Huckabucka to face the dogs!”)

Congressional staffers, both R and D are shocked at the incompetence and more than willing to speak to the media about it off the record. WH staffers, in some cases 30 at a shot, are venting to WaPo.

I’ve never seen this level of incompetence inside *any* organization, at *any* level, personally or at a distance, in my lifetime.

The term Hitler oath refers to the oaths of allegiance, or Reichswehreid, sworn by the officers and soldiers of the German Armed Forces and civil servants of Nazi Germany between the years 1934 and 1945. The oath pledged personal loyalty to Adolf Hitler in place of loyalty to the constitution of the country.

Do you feel it? The steady drip, drip, drip, of inevitability that this Administration is falling to pieces and will eventually be leaving the stage?

I do. .

Apologies, I really don’t. The drip drip is democracy and justice melting away. There is plenty of outrage among the critics. But so far not one meaningful charge against the campaign or Trump. No meaningful push back except from the courts. So far little real serious moves to create a special prosecutor. Or censure. Or investigations of the emoluments violations. The flagrant attempts to undermine the constitution.

I see almost no action among those that can actually bring him down.

He’s received formal guidance. Reading between the lines would suggest that he’s flipped on others and the guidance is to keep his trap shut on anything of substance other than what his lawyers have stated to him. He’s far more disciplined than anyone else in Trump’s orbit, which is why he likely is seeking the sweetheart deal, while Flynn and all the rest are going nuts.

Manafort’s statement is also a lie, his work was explicitly done “on behalf” of the Russian government. The fact that he was directly employed by an oligarch instead of the Russian government doesn’t do anything to change the fact that this was his sales pitch in getting the job and description of what the job was:

“We are now of the belief that this model can greatly benefit the Putin Government if employed at the correct levels with the appropriate commitment to success,” Manafort wrote in the 2005 memo to Deripaska. The effort, Manafort wrote, “will be offering a great service that can re-focus, both internally and externally, the policies of the Putin government.”

Take a deep breath. I remember how long Nixon, in a noose, swung in the breeze before he eventually gave it up. Trump will be the same way, although he’ll fight harder because he is ultimately, a sociopath, with an inability to suck on his finger, stick it up int the air, and tell which way it is blowing.

Given Castro’s tenure, that’s not so reassuring.

There is no comparison between Trump and Castro; Castro was actually competent at what he did and understood policy. He might lie about things but he would sound totally coherent when doing so. He was definitely not demented. I think what will ultimately save us from Trump — not from the Republicans — is that he actually doesn’t know or understand anything and that he appears to have some early form of dementia.

My mother, after developing Alzheimer’s, would fly into rages when any experience was not satisfactory — including being unhappy with the omelette served at her assisted living facility. Of course, in her case, she didn’t have access to nuclear weaponry to attack her opponents.

Well, he is having trouble with healthcare…and needs the Senate which seems to have knobbly knees and will be reluctant with all of the investigating…politically a bit too hard to pass legislation right now. And that is holding up his tax policy too. Kinda ground to a halt right now. Now the Dem Senators are refusing any committee work if they do not get the level of investigation they want. More halting of Trump agenda.

So to me the race is on…can the Democrats along with assistance from The Trump Gang themselves, put Trump in such a state he either gets impeached or is rendered dead/useless as a politician before the Republicans can get what they want.

It’s political tug of war right now. It’s going to take some time to see who has the strength to get their way.

I fear that it isn’t up to you any more, though. The combined effects of gerrymandering and voter suppression have made it nearly impossible for Republicans to be out of power in any meaningful numbers and for any meaningful length of time. Only low turnout among their voters would have an impact, and the control of FOX and other far right media over the Republican voter is absolute and total.

For all the dysfunction in the current climate, there is no real panic or worry among Republicans. They know they can put out the most transparent of lies, or worse yet, baldly state their own treason and desire to harm Americans, and FOX will instantly instruct their base that this is good and right. The rest of the US media will dutifully present it as a valid argument and point of view and debate it for a bit before letting it go, further normalising any malfeasance. All the negative press that has been out over the past few days, all the hammering away and exposure of Republican rot, would go away in a weekend if Trump were to simply stop tweeting and speaking for a couple of days. With nothing new to deal with, Cult media and the rest of the US media will come up with a narrative that normalises the situation, and the status quo will continue.

I don’t think there is a way for Republicans in power to meaningfully fear for their jobs. Even if Democrats temporarily take over a branch of government, the cult influence on the American populace as a whole will be largely untouched.

I put Bernie in the Jill Stein camp. Not a clue in the world where his loyalties lie. Apparently beyond Bernie (meaning himself) there are none; he’s his only loyalty.

There was a time where I’d say Bernie was on ours albeit stubborn as fuck but I don’t know. A lot of aspects of the man really remind me of Trump and Cruz, not coincidentally the two GOPers i disliked most in the primary.

He is in a lot of ways Trump’s mirror image. The politics are inverted left to right but the basic structure is the same.

There’s some Cruz in him too IMO. It was very easy for me to see as Bernie went on in the primary why he had so few Congressional endorsements despite being there since 1991.

I don’t think Bernie lost that race. I do find his using the Omaha mayoral race as part of his purity pony crusade just a week after snubbing Ossoff on the Georgia Sixth’s election day rather obnoxious though. Backing Ossoff could’ve produced tangible results and Bernie’s “he not a progressive” shit really hurt there. If Bernie really does want to help make the Democratic Party more inclusive he can start by throwing out his ridiculously strict economic litmus test and self appointed role as the one true arbiter of who is and who is not a “true progressive.”

I have to disagree. Bernie would have fucked things up for Ossoff. It would have sent more GOPers out to vote against the new England liberal. A socialist!

In Georgia?

I can’t see any upside to Bernie being involved there.

It’s up to us, as voters.

If we make enough noise and the Rs start to fear for their jobs, things can happen.

His base isn’t going to care but there are a lot of people out there besides just his base.

Of course, this requires work on our end with no guarantees. But giving up now doesn’t really feel like an option either, so…

And the noise level in the media about this seems to be a lot higher than it was on Tuesday.

I think a lot of people have started paying attention this week. Firing Comey was a massive miscalculation on the White House’s part. They actually believed that people of both parties would love them for this. And they’ve made it progressively worse since then.

We have to keep the pressure on, because as they become more and more distracted by this they’ll be more apt to compound their mistakes even further. There’s no getting in front of this story, they can only react at this point.

The thing a lot of us forget sometimes is that we are here because we are political junkies and the stuff that seems blatantly obvious to us is glossed over by 95% of the population.

But when that group wakes up, the politicians do start to pay attention.

That’s what I tried saying two nights ago. Nebraska did have that one seat that went for Obama and that one Dem congressman but it’s a red af state and the DNC dies not have unlimited resources at its disposal.

The higher problem is the apparent lack of understanding that Democrats need more Manchins and Ben Nelsons. I hated Jane Hamsher for that. ActBlue doesn’t help either. Collectively, I’ll agree. But every one of those Republicans wants to keep THEIR jobs. Turning it blue even for a cycle means they lose that plush government salary plus primo benefits. And the uncertainty that they’ll ever get them back.

That right there is leverage.

Ms Wilson, whose Facebook profile is littered with far right-wing and anti-Islamic material, interrupted proceedings to say that she was not unwell.

Him: Not to defend this psycho but why don’t you share all of the stories of Muslim men assaulting women?
Me: Stop deflecting.
Him: Be fair and balanced…
Me: You’ve known me long enough to know that I am balanced. No excuses.
Him: So share a story about the Muslim men who think women can be raped and act like animals.

Not sure how to respond to that. Any takers?

I’d probably point out that you’re sharing stories about people acting on bigotry, not misogyny, which isn’t limited to only Muslims.

Except I wouldn’t actually get involved in a political discussion on FB because it’s more about scoring points and less about an actual dialogue with the other person. (You might be interested in one but I get the feeling your fellow person in the discussion is not.)

I really want to see if I can pull off onsen tamago . A friend of mine has just discovered proper ramen, and it’s gotten me thinking about making some myself, complete with soft-boiled egg accompaniment.

Still looking for an Instant Pot, though. Will eventually resort to Amazon, but I like buying in local retailers in possible. And I’ve spread the information disease goods news to my sister, who is also curious.

What “Tampopo” first!

I enjoyed that movie except for the egg scene, ironically enough.

I would but he has cancer so I’m treating this with kiddie gloves, reluctantly.

I’ve known him for 14 years, which makes it difficult for me to go off on him as well.

I’m too nice to my friends on FB, compared to random wingnuts and Muslim extremists on Twitter.

I think the best response is something along the lines of:

Assault is assault, regardless of the perpetrator or the victim. Acknowledging one instance does not mean ignoring others. Every single one of them should be held to account.

Alternatively, you can point out that any time someone starts with “not to defend…” the next thing they say is a defense. It’s like:

Final option: my wall, my posts, if they bother you, there’s the mute button.

I showed it in class in the early 1990s as a rookie high school Japanese language teacher. I ran from my seat for the remote to FF because I had forgotten about that.

Alas, no Instant Pots in the local markets, so I haven’t jumped on that band wagon yet.

But I now have an Anova precision cooker (with bluetooth, but not wireless) to mess with.

You can use ChefSteps recipes with the Anova even though they pimp their own machine. YouTube them. They are great!

Moot point. He deleted his comment and apologized in private. To his credit, he’s good with keeping comments to himself, so I’m willing to accept his apology. We all do stupid shit in knee-jerk reactions, myself included.

So I just let it be. I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all, because in spite of everything I still believe people are inherently good at heart (per Anne Frank).

U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts in Detroit on Thursday directed the president to produce the document by May 19.”

One example of wrong-doing does not excuse another. Is there a reason you are so intent on changing the subject?

I don’t have the heart to delete people for mere disagreement. I still believe in more dialogue.

If they want to delete me, they’re more than welcome to. I wouldn’t shed a tear.

I rather be above them than to their level, personally.

TBH, I’m wary of telling people I’m not a Sanders fan because I know how dismissive people are to people who don’t see Sanders as a savior and I feel bad because through my local campaign work, I have met many people especially college aged kids who were inspired by him and whose hearts are definitely in the right place but Sanders rubs me the wrong way. It’s not ideological, it’s that I think he’s not an inclusive leader.

Saw a performance of Evita tonight—

Forgive my intrusion but fine as those sentiments sound
Little has changed for us peasants down here on the ground
I hate to sound childish, ungrateful, I don’t like to moan
But do you now represent anyone’s cause but your own?

TBH Vermont isn’t exactly wonderful either. I’ve read some stories about how black motorists are treated there and Bernie’s own rep with the VT NAACP was pretty poor as he never reached out to them but hey black people should vote for him because of him having been a Freedom Rider which is commendable of course but still.

Bernie was NOT a Freedom Rider.

re: #174 MsJ

The higher problem is the apparent lack of understanding that Democrats need more Manchins and Ben Nelsons. I hated Jane Hamsher for that. ActBlue doesn’t help either. Does it make me happy that we need blue dogs? No. But you can’t run liberals in deep red places. You have to make them deep purple first. Then you can go to blue.

The only Dem we have in our district is a former Dem who ran as a Republican (he’s still a Dem in spirit, but that’s the only way he could get elected.) I even voted in the Rep primary to make sure he was the candidate. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

re: #5 goddamnedfrank

I feel like what Olbermann is advocating here could be deeply counter-productive. That it would only destabilize the US further and open the opposition to Trump to charges of rank hypocrisy. I understand where he’s coming from but I feel like if we’re going to crawl out the other side of this in any kind of viable condition as a nation state we’ll need to do it on our own.

It seems to me that it’s unreasonable for Trump to have Russia on his side, while the US has to limp along on its lonesome.

Ask how many stories he would like you to share of pastors abusing young women and men. That ought to be enough balance for him.
