Stunning Video Imagery: The Infinite Now

Arts • Views: 42,427

Vimeo

Over the past months I’ve been working with Australian photographer Ray Collins to bring his amazing oceanscapes to life in the form of cinemagraphs, a blend between photography and video. Each cinemagraph is created from one of Ray’s stills, and sets it in infinite motion, making a unique moment in time last forever.

These cinemagraphs inspired André Heuvelman from the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra to get together with pianist Jeroen van Vliet to record a very moving custom soundtrack, which I combined with a selection of the cinemagraphs.

You can see the original cinemagraphs at armanddijcks.com

Ray’s images can be found at raycollinsphoto.com

One sad, and frustrating, thing that I am seeing on Facebook are self-described “liberal” websites/meme-generators copying the methods of the wingnut Obama-haters.

By that I mean phrasing, vocabulary, begging questions, etc.

You’ve probably seen them too.

To me it’s just self defeating. The wingnuts can look at these things and just say “both sides” and thus sweep away real criticism of Trump.

Swearing in on a bible is a custom, not a law. Two presidents, I believe didn’t even use a bible. “In god we trust” didn’t show up on coins until the 1860s or paper money until the 1950s. The pilgrims were refugees. And many of the founders were deists so they used vague terms and weren’t all “hashtag John 3:16 hashtag Romans 8:17” (I just randomly picked that second one, don’t know what it actually says). I mean, hell, jefferson’s bible literally removed all the hocus locus from the story of Jesus.

Hahaha. Good question. Also, apparently, I’m really good at picking bible verses because this is Romans 8:17

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

And if the idea of being heirs of god isn’t right up their alley…

Wasn’t what Jefferson did was to buy a standard-edition New Testament, then take a razor to it, cutting out everything that wasn’t directly attributable to Jesus? And then realize that what he had was;
1. A lot of waste paper
2. A “Testament” that was basically a long pamphlet

Yeah I’ve read about how the Liberty U students opposed to Trump were treated. I mean it honestly amused me for the way their higher ups like Falwell love to complain about how conservatives are treated on campuses and here he is being an abject dick to people who actually agree with him more than not because they don’t worship Trump. And if they think this pisses us off, they couldn’t be anymore wrong. Trump may be a religious fake but he has more in common with the conmen at Liberty than he doens’t.

In some ways, we live in much more religiously zealous times than our ancestors did. I wonder how William Howard Taft’s views on religion would translate to the general population now. Certainly, he wouldn’t get anywhere in the GOP since unlike Trump, he wouldn’t pander to it. In fact, Taft refused to stop golfing on Sunday on Teddy Roosevelt’s suggestion. He liked golfing so he was going to continue it. Taft’s far from my favorite President but I respect that.

Uh, the Pilgrims weren’t refugees. They came explicitly to set up a theocracy.

In fact, everywhere in Europe the Puritans gained power they also attempted to set up theocracy by banning Catholicism. Puritans as such never used the term themselves; it was normally used as a pejorative against them. Mostly they were extremist Calvinists.

Note the Massachusetts variety of Puritans that came in 1620 went about banning people like Baptists and set up witch trials.

The kitten with the dark points and face has really been changing color this week. The dark hair is becoming darker and more prominent in expanse. Supposedly this type of coloring has something to do with body temperature.

Unless you call them stupid idiots and then the people who mock snowflakes and safe spaces suddenly become sensitive snowflakes themselves. I had a great talk with my cousin last night. She lives in the UK. Her belief and I agree with her is that so many Americans just do not care about our perception and role in the world at large. It’s a paradox really. We want to be a power but we also want to be in our own little world too. One of our country’s greatest fortunes is we’ve been able to avoid war in our own backyard for much of our history, a big contrast between France. But in a way, that’s hurt us in that much of our population doesn’t see the coincidences of war. Being large likewise doesn’t allow us to see the world beyond our borders. My cousin was telling me that it’s a two hour flight from Heathrow to Vienna. For much of the country, it’s probably at the very least a four hour flight to either Ottawa or Mexico City. We are what we our geographically but we need to change our perception of the world aroudn us.

I had a boss, who was the worst boss I ever had, who would have terrible times of shrieking and whining whenever she lost the price gun, which was almost daily. I swore I would never be like her. I am still different. I was very calm and mystified when I couldn’t find my price gun, because that (almost) never happens to me. Then I found it, about a foot away from where it was expected to be, but behind something. And I had totally forgotten the cup of coffee I misplaced in the search until I had a customer to ring up. Coffee was right by the cash register. Now I can price those pumps and gel seat pads and get rid of the box. And drink the coffee.

Is the walker one of those where you have to squeeze the brake lever to make it go, and when you let go of the brake lever, it stops? Those are the fanciest I’ve seen. Except for the one where you can kneel on it with one leg, and make it go with the other.

Walker technology has come a long way. I hope you get to take yours out in the sun soon!

“Had a good talk with my uncle. He was telling me about a friend of his who voted for Trump who feels total regret for the vote.”

I can imagine that there are quite a few who regret voting for Trump, but I don’t expect them to admit it. They thought they were voting for someone who would be a competent POTUS. They got caught all up in the idea that he was “strong” and are now discovering he’s what he has always been——a weak, lying, possibly brain-damaged, self-promoting, narcissistic, blame-shifting, POS. While they were caught up in hhis “celebrity” and the BS he was selling, they refused to notice that he’s the type of person who won’t think a second about throwing them under the bus if he has to. You saw who Trump really is, I saw it, and millions of others saw it, but his strongest supporters last year didn’t see it because they didn’t want to see it. If they’re disappointed in what they’re seeing in him today, it’s totally their fault. I have zero sympathy about their being embarrassed by him at this point. None. Politics is not a game, and if one wants to elect competent politicians, one should do one’s research and avoid partaking of the showmanship and getting caught up in the drama politicians like Trump deal in. They got on the Trump Train, and now they want off, and I am not inclined to feel sorry for them. As my dearly departed parents would say if they were still alive: “They bought a pig in a poke.”

(Mind you I’m pretty sure none of this has been touched in the last 10 years…)

I of course didn’t realize this at first so he had to go through what I had thrown out to double check. But really, it’s okay to let go of the bike saddle where the fabric covering is in shreds and the foam is coming off and the saddle itself is in multiple pieces. I promise.

Anyway the oldest dated thing I found was a bike catalog from the spring of 1994! And now shit is in storage bins and sorted so it will in theory be easier to find things when needed.

One doesn’t need to convince Republicans to vote for Democrats (though if they do, that’s fine). All they have to do is choose not to vote because they think their own party is corrupted.

That is a much easier bar to clear.

re: #85 Anymouse

One doesn’t need to convince Republicans to vote for Democrats (though if they do, that’s fine). All they have to do is choose not to vote because they think their own party is corrupted.

That is a much easier bar to clear.

Another alternative. Though I tend to not like the idea of abstaining or actively trying to convince voters from abstaining. A third alternative would be protest votes for third party candidates

My wife went round town in the last election encouraging embarrassed Republicans to vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson (he drew three votes here).

My position is a little trickier as a trustee: While it is acceptable for me to plump for my preferred candidate (Mrs. Clinton), it would be unethical of me to actively encourage people not to vote.

I thought long and hard (including in the actual voting booth) about voting for Johnson (I’m in California so it wasn’t like it was going to swing the state), but I just couldn’t do it. I had such high hopes when they nominated two guys that had be actual governors, but they turned out to be unserious. So I reluctantly voted for Clinton, though it was the last box I checked and I thought about leaving it blank.

I understand reasons for not voting (no acceptable candidate, not enough information about the candidates), but I always try to do at least some basic research before Election Day on down ballot races so I can fill out my ballot.

But yeah, elected officials really shouldn’t be telling people “just leave that line blank”… doesn’t seem right at all. Which is why I think the primary challenges or third party candidacies are better ways to go. But I’m also not going to complain if TPers or other Republicans stay home because they’re mad at something

I have vanquished the garage shelves!

I am so dusty.

The older, the better, on some of that bike crap stuff. The saddles only if it’s all leather and frame, no plastic, no foam. Oozing gel is the worst. Toxic waste.

Off to the shower, now, for you!

Trump Wants NASA to Put a Crew on Rocket’s Debut Flight

ObserverArt  May 13, 2017 • 3:20:36pm

Yesterday Backwoods Sleuth posted about a shooting in Kirkersville Ohio at an elderly care center. Two women, the town’s new police chief and the gunman all dead.

When I saw it, I commented I know the area well being it is just 20 miles or so east of Columbus on National Road, Route 40 and most likely a domestic shooting by a “bubba” type.

Well, it was. And the guy that did the shooting was a walking time bomb…with a gun.

You know all that crap the NRA says about people need to be able to protect themselves from other guns falling into criminal hands, etc. Well, he is a criminal that was still allowed by this state to have a gun. And now it has caused this guy’s girlfriend her life, a co-worker’s life and that of the police chief. And of course after all that he goes and shoots himself. We’ve seen this how many times?

This is disgusting…I’m going to post some of the low lights…the whole article needs to be read to see how bad this all was.

Newark (OH) Advocate - Kirkersville Shootings

Kirkersville shooter had violent past

KIRKERSVILLE - Before he arrived in the small village of Kirkersville Friday morning, Thomas Hartless had created a trail of court records detailing his violent past, especially toward one of the women he is believed to have killed….

he most recent records in that trail were filed earlier this month, the latest in a nearly six-month long narrative detailing threats of violence and a woman scared for her life.

The woman was 46-year-old Marlina Medrano, who according to court records had been living in Newark with Hartless since approximately August 2016.

The pair had a volatile relationship, detailed in court records and police reports, which ended in tragedy Friday after Hartless went to the Pine Kirk Care Center in Kirkersville and took two people hostage before killing the village’s police chief Steven Eric DiSario, Medrano, who was a nurse at the facility and nurse aide Cindy Krantz.

Earlier this month, Medrano had filed a petition seeking a protection order against Hartless because she was scared to be alone with him and fearful of what he might do.

But records show for the past several months, Medrano had been fearful of the man.

On Dec. 5, Newark Police were called to Medrano’s Westmoor Avenue apartment for a domestic dispute.

- - -

While that case was pending, Hartless was released on bond.

On Jan. 14, Licking County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to Licking Memorial Hospital to speak with Medrano after she had been taken there by Hartless’s family for treatment of injuries.

- - -

On March 6, Utica Police were called to a home down the street from the home of Hartless’s parents on Oakland Avenue for another domestic incident.

- - -

In late March, Hartless was found guilty of all three counts and sentenced to 90 days in jail, however, he was released on April 11. There is no reason for the release given in the court paperwork.

- - -

Sheriff Randy Thorp said it is not yet known if Hartless had been served with a protection order that was put in place after Medrano filed the petition as a temporary measure until a full hearing could be held or if Hartless was permitted to have firearms as a condition of the protection order.

Under Ohio law, those convicted of misdemeanors are permitted to own and possess firearms unless specific court orders prohibit it.

“If the language of the order says to seize firearms, we do,” Thorp said. “We take direction from the court.”

Hartless had been violent with other girlfriends before. According to court records, he kidnapped an ex-girlfriend from a Newark business in July 2009, driving her to Knox County where he assaulted her.

- - -

Hartless was convicted of a felony in that case and spent time in prison, which would bar him from owning a firearm. However, court records show Hartless successfully completed probation in 2014 and was restored to all citizenship rights, thereby reinstating his right to have a weapon.

- - -

Read the whole article for all the detail, but you can see the pattern.

Oh yeah…the police chief:

Funeral arrangements are pending for DiSario, Krantz and Medrano. An official GoFundMe account has been created to help the DiSario family. Area police agencies have warned of fake accounts being created to capitalize on the death of the police chief, who was a father of six children with a seventh on the way and had only been on the job about three weeks.

Welcome to America…

One sad, and frustrating, thing that I am seeing on Facebook are self-described “liberal” websites/meme-generators copying the methods of the wingnut Obama-haters.

By that I mean phrasing, vocabulary, begging questions, etc.

You’ve probably seen them too.

To me it’s just self defeating. The wingnuts can look at these things and just say “both sides” and thus sweep away real criticism of Trump.

I’m not worried about the wingnuts invoking Magic Balance Fairy. It’s the fucking idiot “independents” that are the goddamned problem with the “both sides” horseshit.

Greetings, Lizard Nation. I have been out of action for a couple of days because I had a heart attack Thursday afternoon. I had just gotten in from the grocery store when it hit. I called 9-1-1 first of course, then my brother in Colorado (he is a minister and would conduct the funeral service in the worst case scenario, so I thought it was a good idea to give him a heads-up). I called my daughter after that. As you can see, I survived after an emergency angioplasty. I am now back home, to a bed that won’t try to strangle me, clothes that are not designed to degrade the wearer, a quiet environment where slamming doors and chattering people won’t wake me up every few minutes, and edible food. The latter is conjectural right now because I am still having a lot of nausea and can’t seem to hold anything down. I’m still very tired and moving at about half speed. My daughter is here, along with my friend Harv and the farm manager and his family so I am not lacking for help. My insurance will pay the bill, though I am wondering if new Trump rules might allow them to put out a contract on me.

I worked institutional foodservice (BSA summer camp) for about seven years (1993-94, 2002-2006) and a lot’s changed over the years; in my later stint, we were using boil-in-bag frozen egg mix for scrambled eggs, which is de rigeur in foodservice these days (and was probably what you had). It makes it a lot easier to cook fresh-ish scrambled eggs, but, that said, it’s still possible to screw them up (cooking too long, letting the water level or temperature in the Groen pots get out of whack).

To begin with, every person has a different life story so we are not in a good position to judge fault when one of them ends up on the street. And so what if it is their fault? Who has not made bad choices? When I showed up at the ER, they did not say, “Oh, well, we see you were a long time smoker. Your fault. No super expensive treatment for you. Now, go away and die and don’t bother the rest of us while you’re doing it.”

re: #112 Shiplord Kirel

Wow. Glad to hear you made it: hope it’s a speedy recovery.
And speaking of “speedy”.. you had an attack on Thursday p.m., and a hospital trip, and an “emergency angioplasty” AND a hospital stay long enough to get disgusting hospital food - and you’re back home by Saturday afternoon? I’m sure you’re not going to miss the rubber eggs, but, man! That seems quick!

Mrs. Fish had her big car accident (broke her neck in 4 places) on Sunday night. We went home Tuesday afternoon. If they’re able to fix you, they’re damn efficient about it. It’s when things go pear-shaped that you wind up with an extended stay.

And I had the hardest job in the joint: pot and pan duty.

But, that was mainly by choice; sure, our hours compared to a lot of other staffers sucked (up at 6 AM every morning and on duty in the kitchen/dining hall until about 9-10 PM, with the exception of 1-2 hour breaks between breakfast and lunch and between lunch and dinner), but, IMO, it sure beat teaching merit badges.

Besides, we had a few other bennies and some fun times to our job, so it wasn’t all slaving work.

Hospital stays have gotten shorter and shorter in recent years. Modern diagnostic tools have a lot to do with this. With angioplasties, the only requirement is a 24 hour observation period to make sure the incision is staying closed, assuming no further procedures are necessary. The downside is that restrictions at home are more extensive. I can’t lift anything heavier than 5 pounds for example. My nephrectomy a couple of years ago took only a day longer and it is a very complicated and intrusive procedure. 50 years ago, radical nephrectomy was a month long hospital stay.

My spinal tumor surgery had me out of the hospital in 5 days and back to work in 14 days. Pretty sure that would’ve been at least 2 months with traditional invasive surgery, which would have gone in through the abdominal cavity.

re: #105 ObserverArt

Oh yeah…the police chief:

Welcome to America…

Utterly disgusting. He had so many domestic violence arrests and convictions, but still had guns—and his family said he wouldn’t hurt her because he “lurved” her. Ugh.

Reminds me that I need to finish filling out the forms to volunteer at the Family Justice Center (women’s shelter etc.) Amazing that they require more background information to be a volunteer than it takes to get a gun after being a convicted felon.

I remember the last time I was in the emergency room for over 12 hours due to a RA flareup. Dr checked me every hour and 6 hours later he rushed in upset because I hadn’t eaten anything and he knew I was diabetic. Out came the orange juice and graham crackers. They brought me a nice salad with poached salmon and the veggies were marinated in vinaigrette. Had that with iced tea. Hey I almost asked to stay overnight for breakfast. The nurse joked with me that they had a box of granola bars and fat free milk ready for me if that happened. Honestly, the times I have been in Kaiser I’ve had no complaint with their meals!

I was out for the day, and I come back to this? I guess it’s one way to get updings…

Seriously-take care of yourself. It does sound like you’ve got good help at home which is important.

Those rubberized scrambled “eggs” are the absolute nadir of hospital food. They remind me of the filling in a golf ball but probably taste worse. They are so bad it’s almost admirable. How do they do it? How many ways are there to screw up an egg? If you gathered 1000 of the most incompetent chefs on the planet and promised a million dollars to whichever one could come up with the worst offering, they would be hard pressed to deliver anything worse than hospital eggs. Hospital lime jello salad might come close though.

They are made from powdered egg product, reconstituted and then heated to spongy styrofoam biscuits in an industrial microwave.
