I think most Republicans are afraid of that Trump person. This is why they are going along with what he says and does. He is a detriment to the country.

They will only move against him when he becomes a clear and undeniable threat to their grasp on power.

At the end, Clapper says he’s not surprised that the republicans aren’t doing shit about Trump’s attack on the separation of power. He sees what’s going on.

Yes, but they have a tricky balancing act to do: If they push really hard, they might get a bunch of tax cuts passed (maybe) and healthcare messed up (or worse) but then they will be hammered in 2018. When do they figure out that’s not worth it? Or maybe they think it is … Trump would take it, what with a yuuuuuge personal tax break and a good chance that the estate tax will not soon be reinstated after it goes.

I don’t know if you have noticed, but he has a bit of a gambling streak in him. It’s right next door to the yellow streak, and just below the river of stupid.

I think this is beginning to crack — but not at the leadership level. Some house Republicans are beginning to feel the icy winds at the back of their necks, and Trump’s terrible approval ratings show them they don’t need to be afraid of him.

It can’t happen fast enough.

Exactly. They see no need to remove him until at least 2018…and even then they will not get hammered, I just expect the Dems to do marginally better in the mid-terms than they usually do.

That is not the question: the question is rather how will voters react to what he does.

DT has been able to sidestep or short-circuit nearly every rule and convention of campaigning, governing and maintaining press relations. I see little sign of that changing.

Adult children of authoritarians are useful in three ways: first, they tend to be trustworthy confidants in regimes rife with paranoia, as corrupt authoritarian states usually are. Second, they are excellent vessels for laundering money, creating enough distance that assets stolen from the state are harder to track. Third, they tend to have a warmer public profile which offsets the brutality of the dictator by distracting the population with pictures of their happy families or glamorous lifestyle.

Naval Air Station Oceana officials are urging caution after a 94,000 gallon jet fuel spill in Virginia Beach:
navytimes.com

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Officials working to clean up about 94,000 gallons of jet fuel spilled at an air station in Virginia Beach are urging residents to avoid recreational activities like fishing in the area until their work is done.

The Navy said Saturday that crews are still working to remove fuel from affected areas. The Navy says the fuel leaked from a tank at Naval Air Station Oceana on Thursday and spread onto adjoining properties and waterways.

Virginia health officials say the public should refrain from fishing, crabbing and other recreational activities in Wolfsnare Creek south of Virginia Beach Boulevard and East of Lynnhaven Parkway while the cleanup work continues.

Authorities say experts are working to locate and help affected wildlife.

The Navy says the cause of the spill is being investigated.

Trump’s promised hotline for veterans remains unfilled

I feel bad for the vets overall, but less so for the ones who supported DT based on this (and other) promises.

DT did propose a 6% increase in spending for veterans’ health care, although a 10% increase is the minimum needed to maintain current levels of service.

Plus, the VA is looking for a fix to the caregiver stipend programme (which the GOP stripped a lot of money out of). That programme pays caregivers of disabled veterans a small stipend to cover their added costs of caring for a disabled veteran.

In the meantime, in the EEK category:

Mattis: Pentagon Would Consider Sending Troops to Somalia (goes to Military Times)

The Trump administration would consider deploying additional U.S. troops to Somalia should the troubled African nation request greater military aid to combat al-Qaida loyalists there, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis indicated Thursday.

“That’s a decision we’ll take if it’s broached to us, and we’ll decide yes or no,” Mattis told reporters after attending a London security conference focused on the Somali government’s relentless struggle with the extremist group al-Shabaab.

Instant Pot report from The Backwoods:

We made a pot roast:
About 5 minutes to saute a Vidalia onion and some minced garlic in olive oil, then another 5 minutes to brown a 3-pound chuck roast. Added a can of beef broth and a bottle of Guinness Extra Stout.
An hour in the Instant Pot.
Meanwhile, chopped up some red potatoes, parsnips, carrots, turnips and Brussels sprouts. Added them to the Instant Pot and let the whole shebang do its thing for another 10 minutes.

YUM!

Then, MrBWS cut up the leftover roast, chopped up some more veg, added another bottle of Guinness, and turned to slow cook mode for a couple of hours for stew leftovers.

I haven’t been quite that ambitious, or hungry. I had a hankering for black-eyed pea salad so I tossed in a half bag of dried B-E peas this morning. 30 minutes cook time turns them into smush. Louise Mensch is known for deleting her “less than accurate” predictions to give her a seemingly good track record.

Over on Twitter, she was being dragged over her FISA court assertion as an example of how she doesn’t understand how the US Constitution works (she claimed the Supremacy Clause grants the FISA court powers to set up grand juries and issue indictments).

Even if the FISA court had grand jury and indictment powers (it doesn’t), that has nothing to do with the Supremacy Clause (regarding the order of precedence of US laws and governance).

re: #66 Anymouse

Louise Mensch is known for deleting her “less than accurate” predictions to give her a seemingly good track record.

Over on Twitter, she was being dragged over her FISA court assertion as an example of how she doesn’t understand how the US Constitution works (she claimed the Supremacy Clause grants the FISA court powers to set up grand juries and issue indictments).

Even if the FISA court had grand jury and indictment powers (it doesn’t), that has nothing to do with the Supremacy Clause (regarding the order of precedence of US laws and governance).

The Supremacy Clause reference in her article didn’t relate to the FISA Court but to her contention that a sitting President is immune from criminal prosecution in State or Federal Court. She’s wrong, the Supremacy Clause only relates to the pecking order of laws, creating our system where the US Constitution trumps everything, federal law trump State Constitutions and State laws, State Constitutions govern State laws, State laws trump local ordinance. It has fuck all to do with protecting the President from prosecution. She probably meant Executive Privilege but she was wrong there too:

The Supreme Court stated: “To read the Article II powers of the President as providing an absolute privilege as against a subpoena essential to enforcement of criminal statutes on no more than a generalized claim of the public interest in confidentiality of nonmilitary and nondiplomatic discussions would upset the constitutional balance of ‘a workable government’ and gravely impair the role of the courts under Article III.” Because Nixon had asserted only a generalized need for confidentiality, the Court held that the larger public interest in obtaining the truth in the context of a criminal prosecution took precedence.

I so want an Instant Pot now, even though I already own a pressure cooker and three slow cookers.

We actually got the Cosori via Amazon Prime. It’s pretty much the same as the Instant Pot, but less expensive and comes with the glass lid (for using it as a steamer or slow cooker) and a spare gasket (both are extra with the Instant Pot).

I have three pressure cookers, but use them for canning. I really like how convenient the computerized menu is on the Corsori/Instant Pot. MrBWS was a quick learner with this. (He still doesn’t know how to operate a pressure cooker.)

I went to my niece’s graduation last night. Here’s an anecdote of both the inevitable direction of our future here and the reason we need to keep up the fight. The head of the graduate student council gave his speech last night. Near the end, he listed all of the people who have helped him get to that point, including “my husband” (his, why I put it in quotes). This was at University of North Texas (UNT). And while UNT, being the third largest university in Texas, is definitely more liberal than the state, the guy lives in Texas.

So, while regressives and reactionaries can fight, as long as we fight, they will lose.

Jeff Sessions Orders Harsher Sentences, Taking U.S. Policy Back to 1980s

On Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a memo ordering Justice Department staff to charge criminal suspects - specifically low-level, non-violent drug offenders - with the most severe crime possible and pursue the toughest sentences allowed, rolling back progress made under the Obama administration.

“It is core principle that prosecutors should charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense,”

Think Sessions has stock in for profit prisons? Or is he just going after low-hanging fruit to pad the numbers?

Since Ontario gets almost as much snow as we do (/s), I would think they would want something like tread on the pavement. (Ontario also has more pavement.)

The idea seems interesting though. I recall some years ago concept cars where the wheels in back would unlock so you could turn all four wheels perpendicular to the curb, allowing the same thing.

Lawrence O’Donnell’s Future At MSNBC Is Unclear

Lawrence O’Donnell, host of MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” has just four weeks left in his contract, and the cable network does not appear to be interested in renewing his deal. Four well-placed sources tell HuffPost that MSNBC has not been in contact with O’Donnell’s team of representatives to negotiate a new deal.

The absence of active negotiations weeks before a contract expires is highly unusual and often a sign that a contract won’t be renewed. News networks normally don’t risk letting the contract of a host who has a highly rated program expire or even come close to expiring before renegotiating. A short time-frame puts the network at a strategic disadvantage in talks, that’s why cable networks often start negotiating renewals six to nine months in advance of a contract ending.

A spokesman for NBC News declined to comment on “ongoing negotiations.” Although, multiple sources from inside and outside the network have told HuffPost that no negotiations have taken place.

I had trouble with that until my late thirties. I got a state ID when I developed epilepsy and Florida took my license from me. (I can have a license now.)

Around here, I never use an ID for anything. When wingnuts complain about needing ID to vote with statements like “how can you cash a cheque” or other such nonsense, it doesn’t make any sense to me.

No one asks me for an ID here for a cheque or any other transaction. Mailing in my bills no one asks for that either. The only ID I use is my retired military ID when I go on FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne.

The first time I used an ID since last year was when I photocopied my DL and passport for proof of age and citizenship for my water operator license. Before that it was on my road trip to Manitoba.

I do not have a photograph of my mother other than a black-and-white five generation photo (I am the baby in the photo).

I need to see about getting a photo from my mother. (There is one she has of her in a hand-painted silk Thai dress my father sent her from Thailand that is particularly stunning - he then took the photo and had it done as a painting.)

I have loads of old black and white photos from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Both of my parents, and all of my grandparents, aunts and uncles, were avid photographers. This avid interest filtered down to my generation as well as the next one.

Like this.

The dump truck was going somewhere north of 50 mph when he hit; there was a line of cars behind a minivan waiting to turn left, and the truck driver wasn’t paying attention. I was the last guy in line, so I took the brunt of the impact. Despite the severe damage, everyone walked away except for a kid in the minivan who got thrown; he had road rash and a broken leg. I got some stitches and a barely visible scar.

The most I ever put on a car was my Vega (270,000 when I sold it, I bought it with 22,000). My Smart is pushing 50,000 now (something about all the trips to Canada plus the trip to Arkansas, and regular trips to Colorado and Wyoming).

Mrs. Fish’s Town Car just crossed 200k on our way back to fish country earlier this spring. As long as it’s well cared for, the rest of the car will most likely fall apart around the engine and transmission.

Yikes.

Before I met my wife, she was working for Digital Equipment in Colorado Springs. She was involved in an accident so severe that she describes the remnants of her car “something they swept up with a broom and dustpan.”

It took several hours to pry her out of the car. There is now a stoplight at that corner.

Yeah, Mrs. Fish and I have both now been in serious accidents. Obviously she got the worst of it. I joked with her, “Geez, honey, do you really have to outdo me in EVERYTHING?!”

My wife’s wreck got local news coverage in Colorado Springs. She was hit by an Air Force van that ran a stop sign.

The local television station measured the brake marks on the road and determined the van was moving at least eighty-five miles an hour in a twenty-five zone.

The Air Force immediately transferred all three men out of the country (not trying to evade prosecution or anything… .)

I’ve never had power steering in a vehicle (I hate power steering). I was able to parallel park my old beat up Ford E-250.

Makes for an interesting list: What wonderful cars have LGF’ers owned?

I’ll go first and bore everyone:

[Embedded content]

In 1964 my first car was a 57 Chevy Convertible - cost $500
In 1969 I traded the Chevy in for a 66 GTO - absolute fun to drive! My new wife got into an accident and the insurance company had a parts 67 GTO front end installed.
Next, after the arrival of the first kid, bought a 72 Ford LDT Country Squire station wagon. The front hood was the size of an aircraft carrier landing deck. Two months after buying this “boat” in the early 70’s, the gas crises kicked in…that hurt.
Also got a brand new 72 GMC 3/4 ton P/U for me at this time.
Next a new 88 Chevy Cavalier station wagon. Another mistake, didn’t realize how fast the kids would out grow the back seat.
After 20 years of use, I sold the GMC P/U and bought a 88 Ford 1 ton crew-cab 4X4 diesel P/U. Perfect for family outings.
Then junked the Cavalier and bought a 98 Subaru Legacy S/W for the move to Alaska in 2000.
After 18 years of use I sold, the Ford crew cab and then traded the Subaru for a 2008 GMC mid-size 4X4 crew cab that we could tow behind our motor-home.

I’ve gotten a lot of use out of the 3 pick-ups I’ve owned.

I’m still astonished that either of us survived our accidents. You obviously saw Mrs. Fish’s accident pictures from last year. If you look closely at the left side of my truck picture, you’ll see how close he came to taking my head off. Luckily it wasn’t a square hit and the angle was just right that he clipped the cab and the truck spun away (head-on into a nearby guardrail) rather than getting compacted.

One of my friends on a Lincoln forum had a Town Car with 800,000 original miles. He lost it when a spark plug blew out of the head; the threads had gotten so brittle from that many heat cycles that the threads themselves let go and the engine compression ripped plug, threads, and all.

Meanwhile, the GOP still looking at corruption and not seeing anything:

Senator Mike Lee Says Trump Fully Cooperating with Russia Investigation (goes to Huffington Post, more at the link):

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) said Sunday that President Donald Trump is “fully cooperating” with the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, despite Trump’s explicit acknowledgement that he fired FBI Director James Comey over the Russia probe.

“Regardless of recommendation I was going to fire Comey,” Trump told NBC’s Lester Holt last week. “And in fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.”

Trump went on to tell Holt that the Russia investigation “should have been over with a long time ago” and that Comey’s continued focus on Russia showed “he’s the wrong man for that position” as FBI director.

Lee, however, insisted that Trump was not interfering with the investigation. “As far as I’m aware, he is fully cooperating,” Lee told Fox, adding that Trump wants the investigation to proceed “wherever the facts may lead.”

A lot of cars over the ..mumble, mumble.. years since I’ve been driving; but the most “wonderful” one I can recall was my 1970 Lotus Elan (the same car Mrs. Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) drove in the first color season of The Avengers). Built like a piece of junk. of course - it had been been designed as a tax-saving kit car, and it showed - with the usual eccentric design elements of “classic” British sports cars, but damn, did that baby drive! I had to get rid of it too soon, but even after …mumble, mumble.. years, I can still recall how that little car took corners: basically at right angles… It probably would have fallen apart on its own before I would have disposed of it, but it’s the one car I’ve owned that would merit the term “wonderful”.

Well, the Lotus and my 1973 Porsche 911 that had a tendency to explode, but that’s another story….

Microsoft is criticising the way government intelligence agencies withhold exploits in software from software developers. Microsoft predicts that such ransomware attacks as the one perpetrated Friday will accelerate (and not just on Windows).

Cyber-attacks that have hit 150 countries since Friday should be treated by governments around the world as a “wake-up call”, Microsoft says.

The computing giant said software vulnerabilities hoarded by governments have caused “widespread damage”.

The latest virus exploits a flaw in Microsoft Windows first identified by US intelligence.

There are fears of further “ransomware” attacks as people return to work on Monday.

Many firms have had experts work over the weekend to prevent new infections. The virus took control of users’ files, demanding payments to restore access.

The spread of the virus slowed over the weekend but the respite might only be brief, experts have warned. More than 200,000 computers have been affected so far.

The other thing? For all that the MGB looked dazzlingly modern when introduced in 1962, and had such advances a unibody construction, it used the same suspension (Armstrong lever shock absorbers as upper control arms) as the TD, the engine was already 15 years old, the rear suspension was also an ancient design, and the gearbox was non-synchro first gear.

It was fun, and fun to drive, but it was really a pretty, modern face on mechanics dating nearly to the War.

Cars? I love cars…and I fool with ‘em because I love the back roads and driving ‘em. Ohio has some great sport car roads.

1964 Pontiac Tempest LeMans - 6 cylinder could not be killed. Over 250,000 miles when it just got too rusty to trust the rear suspension staying with the car. Bought it from my brother in ‘73 after he had a local school fix up the body and paint it. Got me through the college years.

1969 Ford Custom 500…given to me by my father when the Tempest was put to rest in early ‘77. Hated it, only drove for a year when it was crunched in front of a buddies house we were living in right on a corner. Accident in the intersection, cars bounced off each other and ended up in my car. Totaled with about 95,000 miles.

1974 Audi 100 LS - 4 cylinder SOHC about 110 HP. Inboard Front brakes, front wheel drive…the car was made for icy roads. Love that little coupe even though a lot of people hated the car. When fixed properly it was a sweet ride. Bought with 45,000 in 1978 sold it when the engine mount broke at around 165,000 miles in 1984.

1971 BMW Bavaria - Got it from a customer for some graphic arts work. Lovely and very fast 3 liter BMW straight 6. Going through intersection one day the car ground to a halt and then went into reverse. Transmission’s last stand. Found out later the guy I got in from had a bunch of bozos work on the very complex transmission. They had no idea what they were doing. Sold out for parts…broken heart. Didn’t drive much, didn’t have for long.

Now starts the VW love affair.

1979 Rabbit LS. Bought it with 70,000 miles in ‘83 drove it for years. Lost the engine coming home late at night when the fan for the radiator stopped cooling and the idiot lights for warning about overheating didn’t. Had engine rebuilt and modified, Bigger cam, all new valve train with bigger valves, head ported…bigger throttle body…it would scoot. About 6 months after the engine rebuild a guy ran a red light two blocks from my house (‘85). I t-boned him and folded the front of the car up. I was fine, car wasn’t. Glad I hit him with the front instead of him hitting me in the side. I saw him between houses and knew he wasn’t stopping so I was on the brakes early. Phew, that was close.

Got a used 1980 Rabbit in great condition with an abused engine. Pulled that and put the engine from crashed car into it. Ran great. Also altered the suspension into pretty much a little street racer. It sat low and it was so tight you could read the date on a dime when you drove of the coin. Drove it until 1992 when it was getting pretty rusted out…Rabbit were throw away. It had 155,000 miles on it.

1992 VW Golf Mark 2 body…2 door sunroof. First all new car. Kept it forever almost. Had it when I got my ‘99 (next) then had it’s suspension modified for handling, bigger tires, etc. Kept it until 2007 when I sold it to a buddy that anted it. It still looked good, not a scratch on it. Needed a little work. Had 189,000 miles. Loved it.

1999 VW Gti. First one in Columbus…straight from Wolfsburg. Solid car. Drove the crap out of it. Tilt sunroof, all leather. Had lowering sport springs and sport shocks added. Retired in 2008 as it was about to need everything since the only things I did in all those miles was one brake job, an engine timing sensor and a catalytic converter which was discounted because VW had issues with them that year. Had 179,000 miles on it.

2008 VW Rabbit. Love it. 2.5 liter, 5 cylinder 20 valve inline 175 HP…in a 2700 lb car. It moves. Decent mileage if I keep my foot out of it. Very simple car…cloth interior and no sunroof, but that is why it only weighs what it does. As fast as a fully dressed factory GTi of same vintage. Currently only has 79,000 miles. Clean as the day I bought it. Probably have it for some time…might add another new Golf or GTi and see if that is all the car I need going into retirement. Don’t drive much anymore, so I can keep miles down.

Consumer Reports says I am nuts…they are generally down on VWs. I have had enormous luck with them. But I keep up on maintenance and I use good oil. Used Mobil 1 on the ‘79. Use spec oil for newer VWs all synthetic. The reason I love the VW hatch backs…parts galore and easy to fix them up into what you want.

re: #234 ObserverArt

I loved my little diesel Rabbit when I had it. My brief love affair with that car is what led to the Sonic. 1.4L, 140 HP turbocharged 4-cylinder in a 2700 lb car. Not quite as peppy as your newer Rabbit, but I’ve been consistently turning in 39 mpg tanks with it and if I push the accelerator down, it still moves respectably.

The most I ever put on a car was my Vega (270,000 when I sold it, I bought it with 22,000). My Smart is pushing 50,000 now (something about all the trips to Canada plus the trip to Arkansas, and regular trips to Colorado and Wyoming).

Did you keep a map drawn with all the places you went or could you simply follow your path by the pieces of the car that fell off as you drove it? My dad bought one back in the day. Worst piece of junk I’ve ever seen. You could hear it rusting as it sat parked in the street. Any week you didn’t have to add 2 quarts of oil was golden.

1974 Plymouth Fury III State Trooper’s Special, with a 370 Hemi Enforcer motor, and special ballast tanks in the trunk that allowed you to corner that beast. Had been sitting in a farmer’s barn. 8-track tape player & Sparkomatic speakers in it. Freakin’ terrifying machine. Took it out on I-94 to “see what she’ll do,” floored it, and at 110mph something unholy woke up in the engine and the needle pinned to 160 in a second. Totalled out in a wreck that I only survived because of the Law-enforcement rollcage.

1974 Pontiac Ventura, 2-door hatchback. My alltime favorite car. Yanked the 350 and replaced with a 454 Chev. Goddam neck-snapping acceleration. Auto-tranny but with a huge shift lever on the floor. Could fit a pinball machine into the back and still close the hatch. Wrecked.

1976 Old Cutlass. Wimpy 280 V-8. High-mileage former insurance agent’s company car. Ugly. Rust-gnawed. Lasted 3 years, but by the end, everything was breaking down on this triumph of mid-70s GM engineering. Even the door locks didn’t work, so I kept a coathanger partially poking out of the rust hole in the trunk and used that to pop the locks when I needed to get in and out. Sold to a mechanic who rode it to glory in a dirt-track enduro race.

1985 Chevy Caprice Classic. White body. Black vinyl roof. Basically, a moving “yield” sign. Looked so much like a cop car that all I had to do was accelerate aggressively, and everyone in the fast lane slammed on the brakes and swerved right to let me by. Sold to an idiot farmer who is probably still driving it.

1983 Mazda 626. Manual tranny was the only thing I liked about that POS. Hated that car worse than death. It tried to kill me so many times. Falling apart by the time I traded it in for…

1991 Nissan Pathfinder. My first new car. Still a manual tranny, but that was OK, because on long trips, the 5th gear actually made this 4x4 pretty good on gas. Installed a CD changer in it. Drove it through snow, hub-deep mud in vineyards near Santa Barbara, and all over LA. Turned in at the end of the lease because I’m stupid, that’s why.

1979 Ford F-250 extended bed. The “Truckasaurus.” Huge. 2-20 gal tanks. 7 mpg. Drove it across country and slept in the camper shell in the back in various national parks. An ungainly beast. Only viable when gas was ~$1/gal.

1997 Mitsubishi Diamante. A big sedan. Mature. Well-engineered. Boring. Fitted where I was at that stage of my life. Bought from a former porn starlet, who insisted on spacing payments out to reduce tax problems.

2008 Volvo S80. Best car I’ve ever owned. Comfy, safe, but fast enough to get from LA to SF without having to worry about getting into the left lane to pass when driving on the 5. Still got less than 65,000 miles on it because mostly it sits in the yard as I now work either out of the house or traveling 16,000 miles internationally.

1958 Chevy Bel Air with bored out 286 to 310 hot rod…Buried into parked 1968 Plymouth Satellite street racing. Yeah, he wanted to kill me. Bent steering wheel with body. Not even sore. Young…Too much car at 16.
1957 4 door Chevy Bel Air loaned to a buddy who blew it the fuck up. Ever hear of grenaded? Yeah. Street racing. Flat shifting.
1962 Pontiac Catalina drove into ground
19 something VW Beetle. Almost died in it 30 odd times, could never pass anyone, froze to near death in winter, and sold it to junkie who promptly ran it dry on oil and put a rod through the engine wall.
1969 Ford Falcon which was a fleet car and had an upgrade suspension and rear. It would baffle mechanics with its jump. Sold it and made money on it after owning it a year.
1970-71 Ford Torino with the fabled Cleveland 351 with a 4 barrel and a lift kit. Almost died in it driving between Buffalo and Central Pa in 2 winters. It got up and walked.
Mazda 1980 station wagon which had about 25 HP and a 5 speed but worked. Got T-boned in an intersection by Toyota 4 Runner and why I am here is providence.
Also later model Mazda SW loaded, prototype, high oil consumption, traded in on
1990 or so GMC Safari EXT dutch door van. Loved that, but trans was not responsive. Had to run in lower gear to get any snap.
2002 Toyota 4 Runner after seeing one of then nearly tear my car in half and not have a mark on it, well, I had to have one. Sold for 12,500 with 79K in 2012. Last model on that platform. Niche car. Great return.
2007 Dodge Grand Caravan at the height of the recession when Dodge was treading water I went to my local dealer with an older dodge caravan and got a deal on an ordered number sitting on the floor. Long story short, saved 12 grand. It sits in my garage and rocks to this day. LOADED.
2010 Corolla and 2012 Civic still in operation. Wife and kid, 120K on each and still strong.
And a Yamaha 70-72 RD350cc that was the fastest 350 for about 2 or 3 years…Yes it was. I have rash marks to prove it. It would have the tendency to become airborne.

Didn’t the early Vegas have serious issues with the aluminum blocks and heads not expanding and contracting at the same rates thus making them prone to leaving all their oil under them depending on conditions?

America had a rough time going with aluminum heads at first. The Vegas I think had the worst. Gaskets and seals were also a problem.

But then there was the Chevrolet Chevette. Ugh.

I knew some people that had them. I think you could get out and run faster from 0 to 20. Seriously under-powered engine that had a hard time spinning the drive train for a more powerful engine. I think half the horsepower died in the transmission and another 1/4 in the read end.

I am still feeling weak and I’m likely to fall asleep any time I lie down. I am still having trouble keeping food down, but my daughter concocted some potato/celery soup that was pretty tasty but still managed to stay down. Constipation is also a problem, apparently because of all the pain-killers they gave me. My body seems not to know which end is which. On the plus side, I am not in any pain. I should be up and around in a few days. It could definitely be a lot worse. Looks like my burial plot in Lubbock will have to stay vacant for a while yet.

To be fair, most non-performance-oriented American cars had the same problem. Especially when you got into the smog era, engines were consistently underpowered and automatic transmissions, especially, consumed far more power than the manuals of the day or more modern automatic transmissions.

Came across this when looking for follow up information about last night’s Nascar crash. Not related at all.

Author says no #FakeNews: Eric Trump said Russians financed golf courses

BY JOE MARUSAK

A longtime journalist and author said Sunday he remains steadfast in what Donald Trump’s son Eric told him on a Lake Norman golf course in 2013: that the Trumps relied on Russian backers to finance their golf courses.

Eric Trump went on Twitter last Monday to deny that he told James Dodson, co-author of Arnold Palmer’s memoir, a Ben Hogan biography and other books, that the Trumps relied on Russian financiers as they bought and renovated courses.

“This story is completely fabricated and just another example of why there is such a deep distrust of the media in our country #FakeNews,” Eric Trump said.

But on Sunday, Dodson insisted that Eric Trump did tell him about Russian investors. And two colleagues of Dodson - including one who had helped develop golf in Russia - said Dodson told them back in 2013 what Eric Trump said about Russian financial backing.

More at the link, obviously.

The car might have been a fun ride at one time but as a commuter vehicle in the Michigan winter it sucked ass. Spun out and hit the concrete divider while driving home during a snow storm on MLK Day in 2011. I was bruised up but the RX7 was totaled. But yayy I had the A-Plan!

Base model, no power steering, no A/C, my sister was nice enough to install a modest stereo (AM/FM, tape deck) and ski racks, no rear view mirror on passenger side, didn’t even have an arm rest in the center console. 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
2005 Ford Five Hundred SLE (with a CVT that got me 30 MPG on the highway-incredlible!)

One thing I love about this place is that we’re a virtual family. I’ve been a member of a number of online communities, but there are only two where I feel like I have genuine friends with whom I would enjoy interacting in person, people to whom I am willing to lend support and with whom I am comfortable seeking support. We have a special thing going here. Let’s not forget that when the next round of flame wars starts.

1989 Toyota pick up whenever I turned 16 (1994). My folks had bought it New for my cousin when she came to live with us after our grandmother passed away. My cousin was going through some stuff and crashed it a couple of times. I bought it from my folks a two some point in college. Sold it back to them in 1999 when I bought my next car (they eventually donated it to Cal Poly pomona’s rose parade team)

1999 Mustang (V6 automatic… I was young Andrea foolish). Sold in 2005

2005 Ford F-150 extended cab. A law school graduation present from my folks. Sadly, I totaled her in 2012 in a single car accident

2013 Dodge Challenger RT Classic (V8, six speed, I learned my lesson). A lot of fun to drive though she doesn’t get out much.

I’m contemplating getting a motorcycle license and bike this year (I’ll be 40 next March and it feels like a nice midlife crisis purchase). Alternative is a classic roadster

With my current car, I can mostly just drive right in forward. On a lark, I also parked it under an overhead corn sprayer for sale at the local John Deere dealer.

A gentleman of my acquaintance, as a teenager with a small POS car, drove underneath one of those going down our country blacktop. His on board brother and the sprayer driver were never the same. For some reason, watching Eowyn galloping underneath an Oliphaunt made me think of that!

I miss my first truck. It was my dad’s farm truck, he brought it home new off the showroom floor when his father-in-law’s 1980’s vintage Ford left him stranded. When I was in the hospital with my stitches, he came into my room and I burst out in tears, blubbering how sorry I was that I destroyed his precious truck. Needless to say, it turned out not to be as big a deal as traumatized-brain me thought it would be.

My first car was a ‘71 Plymouth Valiant. I bought it for a dollar from my brother. I was robbed. Nothing worked. The speedometer, odometer, heater, radio—all shot. I had to pump the brakes three or four times to get them to engage. It stalled on left turns—I learned to throw it in neutral and turn the key to get it going again.

But my brother at some point found a stick-on “Turbo” sign that he attached to the back, so it was my Turbo Valiant.

I sold it for $120.

Women are things. Therefore their daughters are property and they are just showing off the great stuff they own so that other men will envy them.

I know you are right, but… God forbid that I ever treat my daughter that way. She is beautiful and an amazing person in her own right, but she is not my possession and I never want to treat her as such.

Woman allegedly tried to run a Republican congressman off the road over his health care vote. That might give GOP reps another excuse to avoid town halls (they’re trying to kill us)

Everyone needs a car like that once in their lives. It truly builds character and humbles the ego.

My Sunbird had a thermostat that would seize up and the car would immediately overheat. I just needed to fiddle with it a bit and it would work again for a few miles. I carried all kinds of spare water jugs on long trips to refill the tank after letting it steam out for a bit. (Even Mountain Dew after a long night once, my date the next day said my car smelled like baking cookies when it was running)

On long trips from Ft Lauderdale to Gainesville, I would drive through the night to avoid traffic and for the cooler air. One one trip after stopping once to fix the thermostat, I had to pull over again, in the middle of nowhere. When I popped the hood, the pressure cap to the thermostat/coolant was missing. My heart sank. It was pitch black, on the side of Turnpike at 2 AM, miles from any turnoff.

I was with a friend who asked, “what now?” I told him, after sighing heavily, I would have to walk to a service station, most likely tens of miles through the night, on the side of the highway.

He said goodbye to me, but then reached into the steaming engine, felt around, and out of no where produced the cap, that had been gently resting on some ledge.

“Is this it?” He asked. We were saved. And made it to G-Ville stopping every 50-60 miles. The force was strong with him. It was the closest thing to a religious moment I think I have ever had.

Every now and then I just like to confirm that Trumpers really dont’ give a fuck about shit like the Constitution or the rule of law. To them rules are just there as technicalities to be selectively applied in their war against people they hate, be those people liberals, immigrants or religious & ethnic minorities.

When I had my Nissan Sentra in Spain, it broke several teeth off the flywheel. Anytime the flywheel stopped when I shut it off in a position where the missing teeth were opposite the starter, I could not start it without a push. (Thank goodness it was a manual.)

While I waited four months to get a new flywheel from the USA, I would park it on a slope near my townhouse and let it roll down the hill to start it.

re: #343 Anymouse

Reminds me of when I was in high school-a friend’s neighbor had some little convertible sports car that had a problem with the starter. For months the young man who owned it would start it by pushing it while he was along side it and then open the door and hop in. Fortunately this was a largely traffic-free cul-de-sac so it was merely unsafe rather than suicidal.

re: #256 Shiplord Kirel

I am being reminded that a heart attack is serious business and you don’t recover overnight. In fact, about a thousand people a day don’t recover at all.

Maybe you can sublet it.

But seriously, don’t push yourself at all. My dad underwent a valve replacement — his second, after the porcine valve started to wear out — and was recuperating pretty well in the hospital. Got a high-falutin’ artificial valve put in. Probably an oil change, too. Despite his doctor’s orders to stay the fuck in bed, Dad decided to skip using the effin’ bedpan and got up to use the toilet. Keeled over on the way back to bed sometime in the wee hours. He had signed a DNR form, so after the usual CPR + zapping efforts failed to restart his ticker, they let him go. He was 76.

About a decade earlier, he had ignored his doctor’s orders (and my mother’s) about taking his blood pressure pills. Instead, he tried using some kind of woo-woo “natural” diet which eventually landed him in hospital for open heart surgery to install that porcine valve.

Lesson learned: pay attention to your doctor. He/she just might know something about this medical stuff.

re: #184 Jay C

This one’s for you.
