Totally OT, but I was thinking earlier about marriage and other stuff. (For those of you who haven’t been following along, it’s my anniversary and I made dinner for Mr. C. rather than going out.)
I am familiar with more than one marriage where some people think one person or the other has a better deal than their spouse. That they give more than they get. And yet, I’m virtually certain that they are happy marriages for both partners. Which brought me to the general question of whether people want “more” or “enough” in their lives. Does “he does more for her than she does for him” (or vice versa) matter if each person gets what they need? Probably for some it does and for some it doesn’t.
I’d imagine people who get “enough” are happier than those who need “more” because I would think it is easier to recognize enough than to know when you have reached a sufficient amount of more. This might also translate to one’s level of satisfaction with life in general because for most people, even well off people, there are always many people out there with more than you have. If you have enough it is good. If you need more, then one way of feeling better is to hope others have less.

On average, Republicans - and Republican men in particular - were more likely to correctly locate North Korea than Democratic men. And Republicans were more likely to be in favor of almost all the diplomatic solutions posed by the researchers. (Women tended to find North Korea at similar rates, regardless of party.)
It seems strange to me that Democratic men would fail harder at this than Republican men, or that Republicans are more likely to favour diplomatic solutions (considering the sabre-rattling going on with Murica-yeah! Airstrikes! Invasions!)

Her concerns proved to be justified when it was shown that thalidomide caused serious birth defects. I remember the thalidomide scandal quite clearly, the ghastly pictures in Life Magazine and the incredible story of how this horror was kept out of the United States.

Interesting thing about thalidomide is it’s the classic example of how molecular chirality can drastically impact how a drug works. It was only the S enantiomer, aka the left handed version of the molecule that caused birth defects. Unfortunately the manufacturer didn’t know that at the time nor did they have the ability to selectively produce only the right handed version of the molecule.

My appendix was pulled when I was seventeen (I suffered recurrent appendicitis because it was actually in the wrong place in my body - I also had an emergency surgery when the scar burst open while I was at sea - ruined a good uniform with blood all over it in the chow hall). My tonsils went away when I was twelve.
BP is fine, though physicians constantly rag on my weight and body fat (both too low). Of course there’s the little problem with epilepsy.

Powers Boothe, the character actor known for his villain roles in TV’s “Deadwood,” and in the movies “Tombstone,” ”Sin City” and “The Avengers,” has died. He was 68.
Boothe’s publicist said he died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Fellow actor Beau Bridges tweeted the news and called him “a dear friend, great actor, devoted father and husband.”

You could twist language and economic theory to the point that something like national healthcare service (or the Apollo program) are nearly “free”. It’s not a useful way to think or argue right now.
A similar argument to that (which I had with a libertarian who just didn’t get it) is the town water systems around here.
Some capitalistic genius went around to all the towns here and convinced every town (except ours) to sell them their water systems, promising better service, and a pile of money for each town.
They all bit except mine (though there was a bitter fight in the village until the board rejected the offer).
Not too long after the water company bought up the city water systems, the prices started going up, the maintenance started going down, and the profits started leaving the area.
In the meantime, our socialistic water system (we own the means of production) has the cheapest water in the Panhandle, and is partially subsidised with county property taxes.

Reality is that Trump was always a con artist and grifter, and was never a skillful negotiator. Being a bully and using an inherited real estate fortune to con others into doing your bidding isn’t the same as being a skilled negotiator.
Reality is that to be a skilled negotiator you have to know all the facts and details of both sides in the negotiation. If you want to conduct a successful negotiation, you’d need to know your rival’s positions as well as they know yours, so that you can find a point in the middle where you can find commonalities and reach a conclusion where both sides have obtained some of what they seek; neither side gets all of what they want - the point of negotiation is that it’s seen as win-win by both sides.
Trump repeatedly shows that he has no interest in facts or minutiae. In fact, it looks like Trump’s a fan of fiction and his minions are feeding him an endless stream of fake stories to boost his ego, confirm his worldview, and otherwise are lying their asses of to him so that he can continue lying to the American people.

In any other administration, this kind of action would result in summary firings of those involved. With Trump, this behavior is apparently condoned and supported, all because Trump needs to have his insulated bubble where facts, news, and logic are absent, and he can baffle his supporters with still more bullshit.
Moreover, had any of this kind of news surfaced in an Obama Administration, the GOP would be holding immediate hearings overnight, drafting letters of impeachment on grounds that the president is actively undermining US national security and violating his oath. Here? The GOP continues enabling Trump and Ryan and McConnell are culpable and complicit.
That’s why there’s no chance at impeachment unless and until the House/Senate change hands. It’s wishful thinking to consider otherwise. At the same time, buying into the nonstop flow of claims that indictments are just around the corner is also so much wish fulfillment and wishful thinking (think TrueStatedFacts & Louise Mensch to name but two). It is possible that indictments are forthcoming? Yes. Does it mean that the Trump admin is crumbling? No.
Any prosecutor that is bringing a case will want to make sure it’s airtight, and they’re not going to be dropping hints that there’s 28, 48, or 100+ indictments ready to fall. In fact, it’s likely to start with one or two people getting hit with multiple charges, or that we learn that a number of individuals are cooperating with law enforcement and prosecutors in lieu for preferential treatment after that deal is done.
Therefore, I’d urge caution on anyone claiming that the indictments are right around the corner. It’s the same kind of baffling BS that HA Goodman spewed for months on end about how Clinton was going to be indicted and that’d be the end of her campaign.

When investors pool their resources to optimize profits, that is a Corporation, (which is a legal construct that only exists because government has created regulations governing them) and is upheld as the very heart and soul of the Free Market.
But when employees or consumers (who are born and exist without any government being directly involved) pool their bargaining power to maximize wages, benefits or purchasing power, that is a union, and is frowned upon as the complete antithesis of the Free Market…

Here in San Diego there is quite a variety of birds, many not native. The blue jays can pester sometimes, but the only really annoying birds are the parrots, now habituated to San Diego county. There are a few flocks that move around the county following the food sources during the year. Sometimes they end up on my block just to rest - what a racket.

Yes, and that is unicorn-fart wishful thinking. the point is that by including everyone in healthcare, overall costs will actually decrease.
Example: We have the Emergency Care Act in the USA. Anyone coming to a clinic or hospital with an emergency condition must be given life-saving assistance, regardless of their ability to pay.
But what happens when we have large numbers of people coming to emergency clinics who cannot pay? The costs are passed onto those who can.
And a large number of these emergency procedures (bypass operations, for example) could be prevented with a minimum of prophylactic care, therapy or prescriptions, which might cost a few hundred dollars rather than tens of thousands for a major life-saving operation…

Many journalists and much of the audience may be liberal, but parent company Comcast has a deregulatory wishlist, and upper management are top-bracket taxpayers with stock options to boot.
Before it belonged to Comcast, NBC/MSNBC were a wholly-owned subsidiary of GE/Westinghouse. Again, happy viewers and good ratings/earnings for the broadcast division meant nothing compared to the parent company’s defense contracts.
