Trump Recklessly Revealed Highly Classified Info to Russia’s Foreign Minister and Ambassador

“Trump doesn’t grasp the gravity of the things he’s dealing with”
Politics • Views: 37,571

And now we get the news that our reckless so-called president actually revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador last week.

President Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in a White House meeting last week, according to current and former U.S. officials, who said that Trump’s disclosures jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State.

The information Trump relayed had been provided by a U.S. partner through an intelligence-sharing arrangement considered so sensitive that details have been withheld from allies and tightly restricted even within the U.S. government, officials said.

The partner had not given the United States permission to share the material with Russia, and officials said that Trump’s decision to do so risks cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of the Islamic State. After Trump’s meeting, senior White House officials took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and National Security Agency.

“This is code-word information,” said a U.S. official familiar with the matter, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by American spy agencies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”

Remember when Trump threatened James Comey last week, after firing him? This latest leak reported by the Washington Post smells like payback to me, and it’s probably not the last of it.

UPDATE at 5/15/17 3:05:33 pm by Charles Johnson

Buzzfeed now confirms the Washington Post’s report, and adds a disturbing note:

Two US officials who were briefed on Trump’s disclosures last week confirmed to BuzzFeed News the veracity of the Post report, with one official noting that “it’s far worse than what has already been reported.”

which causes you to speculate that DT just revealed the existence of a source that one of our allies has and essentially has compromised our relationship with that country as well as the lives of those working for them.

At a minimum…

What could be worse, is that those sources are deep and unknown to the Russians, which would allow them to compromise them and both, stick a shiv in our ally, and possible turn an asset into a liability and disrupt an entire theatre of conflict.

42
lawhawk  May 15, 2017 • 3:18:03pm

Nothing surprises me with Trump.

He’s undermining national security on a daily basis. This is absolutely devastating to US natsec.

Let me count the ways:

You’re an ally who put conditions on access to shared intel. One of those things is not to share with anyone, except with express permission.

Trump went ahead and not only shared this intel, but he did so with the Russians.

That’s plenty bad in and of itself - you’re giving away means and methods in the process.

But then you’re also fucking US relations with our allies, who will now be far more reluctant to share critical intel with the US because it is likely to be misused, leaked, and flat out given to the Russians thanks to Trump’s feckless, reckless, and downright treasonous activities.

If any other person in the US government did what Trump did, it would be grounds for a permanent stay in Fort Leavenworth.

And of course, the GOP will throw chaff and complain that the reporting is half-assed or other such stuff. Yet, if Obama did anything remotely like this, the GOP would be holding an all-nighter tonight to serve up articles of impeachment.

i’m not back (did you know i was gone?)
and ok im out of practice - posted to a dead thread

just an idle thought:

trump is not in this for the “glory” or prestige - yeah he sorta wanted to get his picture painted and be one of “the few” of the elite club,
but i dont think he thought it would really happen.
hes not trying to do a good job or be an effective president

its really all about the grift.
a beautiful run of the mill boring grift - nothing fancy

sell the promise of big “profits” to a bunch of greedy (sort of) investors (voters)
promise big - really big - the wall, tax cuts, maga, whatever.

their voting is the funding

once in, do almost nothing to promote the actual thing - - thats why all of this is a distraction - state secrets, tapes, fbi, 2 scoops, whatever. - he doesn’t care, it doesn’t matter.

the skim is what matters - take “management fees”, perks, golf all the time, get the limos, the protection, the “treatment”. get the government to use your for profit services, hotels, whatever

milk as much as you can as long as you can

parachute out when there’s nothing left to take. no more cash flow / a mere shell

doenst matter who takes over after you or what happens. there’s no legacy
you got what you wanted - the easy cash

if it’s worse - a real “disaster” - what do you care?
move on to the next mark

and predictably, the investors are screwed - they get nothing - they never do

they have to stick around for the cleanup cause they got no means to leave or insulate themselves

i’ll hang up and take my answer on the radio

This isn’t just US intel that Trump compromised.

Trump dumped intel gathered by a foreign nation and shared with the US under strict confidence.

He’s not exactly in a position to provide that to anyone.

It’s not exactly his (meaning US) intel to share. There are rules for that, and I’m thinking that he violated all of them. Someone with far more experience in dealing with this kind of intel would know the intricacies of this.

I’ve seen brain-dead RWNJs claiming that it’s okay because the Russians are “on the same side” and have no incentive to betray a source. Needless to say, this assumes that the asset is not from an anti-Assad group and that the Russians themselves are not infested with pro-ISIS moles.

One thing immediately leapt to mind. Probably not the most insightful takeaway, but Trump’s ego is such a fucking danger to this country. He cannot help but lord things like “I know stuff you don’t” over people, and then has to share them to prove what a demigod he is.

He really is behaving like a child. And when I think of people who voted for this monster (or the voter purity monks who never dare sully their vote with an imperfect Dem candidate), with all of this behavior on full display for 18 months, I just really have to think “You have issues you’re not being honest with yourself about.”

Impeaching isn’t going to happen. Look at John McCain’s response to this latest shitstorm in particular, and to Trump in general. Trump mocked him for being a POW and McCain still went crawling to him.

The GOP has gotten much closer to Karl Rove’s permanent supermajority than Bush ever did by falling in behind perhaps the most dangerous man to ever win an election in the US. These guys could not give two shits about what is right anymore.

I mean, Trump just trashed a major intelligence operation about ISIS. I’ve always read that one of our big problems in that region is that no one trusts us (with good reason.) This is fucking treason, writ large and for all to see.

Again, imagine if Obama had done something this horrible. And yet John McCain basically says “People go to prison for this stuff, but hey, Trump’s the boss. Whatevs.”

That does not sound like a political party that wants what’s best for the country.

Here’s what I honestly think. I think Trump really believes Russia is our friend and they should be privy to this information. IF true, the story is yet another illustration of how unqualified for high office he is.

I didn’t say that impeachment would necessarily happen. I happen to agree that it probably won’t. But Trump will remain in office until it does, or until he is voted out. Technically, I would also include that he will remain until his term ends, but Trump is exactly the kind of President that would try to end run around the Constitution in order to remain in office.

Yeah, I know, I know…someone is going to tell me that I am being too hopeful, the Republicans will never do anything.

Yes, he does. By virtue of his election as President of the United States, he has earned himself a lifetime ticket to a free (for him) security detail.

And maybe the government can also provide some nice secure housing for Mr. Trump and his family after he leaves the White House. Someplace where maintaining his personal security won’t be a problem.

Here’s a nice place!

No. 1. He didn’t say anything and has the “tapes” to prove it. Asked for the Comey tapes, denies be doesn’t have them, nobody believes him.

No. 2. Doesn’t have tapes, fucked up, nobody believes him

Or I suppose he has the tapes, releases them proves he’s telling the truth, the world is fucked.

Trump’s already preparing the intro to “Downfall: US edition.” The entire admin is corrupt to the core, and they’re all in CYA mode and trying to blame the media for all of their failings.

All we’ll be seeing from the GOP now is chaff, because if they were fulfilling their oaths of office, they’d be writing up the articles of impeachment themselves (and serving it on a boatload of Trump officials, not just Trump).

But this is the GOP, and they put their craven power grab above all else, including duty, honor, and country. Yeah, I’m going there. These asshats have decided that party comes before nation and protecting our nation against threats foreign and domestic. Trump is a threat on both counts, and his actions undermine national security by the hour.

Just earlier today we learned that Trump’s bodyguard was going around with Mattis’ phone number on a postit for all to view. That is a minor transgression compared to what Trump’s done here with fucking over not only our intel community, but making it harder for anyone to share intel with the US because there’s no reason to think that Trump wont share it with the Russians or anyone else - and that means our security is put at direct risk.

It is not a denial of history. It is a rejection of the emotional pseudo-history of the Lost Cause. These monuments are not being destroyed; they are just being removed from places of honor. They should rightly be moved to places of learning and preserved, just as artifacts of the Third Reich and Imperial Japan are preserved. My models of Nazi-era aircraft have swastikas on them. This is not to honor the monsters whose symbols they were, but to accurately illustrate an important era in 3 dimensional form.

He might not have a choice, but we all know he will fight to the death to avoid it as long as possible.

How do we know? He has bailed out of business projects in the past. He has cut and run and left people in bad shape from his endeavors…like banks. The man is irresponsible. To save face he may well resign if he can get the proper out.

This guy is unprecedented…I don’t see how anyone can declare anything as fact. He is pushing against a big rubber band called the U.S. Government. It has some stretch but it can also give out.

Sooner or later people have to realize the eject button needs to be pushed. Look how much outrage he has caused just since firing Comey. That rubber band is stretched almost to the max.

I know the Republicans are going to be hesitant, but they answer to powerful people that will be concerned about protecting their businesses and the only way that will be done is by protecting the government.

And then there is the military. Do not forget the military. They can exert some pressure too. The upper echelons of our military have to be gagging and they will be talking to many a politician about the problems being presented.

Nobody would argue that the recently removed statue of Jefferson Davis is anything but a deliberately crafted attempt to glorify the man and endorse his career and values. It is useful as an artifact in illustrating the high regard in which he was held by the southern power structure during the period when they were perfecting Jim Crow to its final and most extreme form. Future generations should therefore have a chance to see it.

arstechnica.com

A researcher has found digital fingerprints that tie the WCry ransomware worm that menaced the world on Friday to a prolific hacking operation that previously generated headlines by attacking Sony Pictures, the Bangladesh Central Bank, and South Korean banks.

The link came in a cryptic Twitter message from Neel Mehta, a security researcher at Google. The tweet referenced identical code found in a WCry sample from February and an early 2015 version of Cantopee, a malicious backdoor used by Lazarus Group, a hacking team that has been operating since at least 2011. Previously discovered code fingerprints already tied Lazarus Group to the highly destructive hack that caused hard drives in South Korea to self-destruct in 2013, wiped almost a terabyte’s worth of data from Sony Pictures in 2014, and siphoned almost $1 billion from the Bangladesh Central Bank last year by compromising the SWIFT network used to transfer funds.

There are a handful of countries with whom the US has special intel relationships, and that includes countries like the UK (which includes Australia, Canada, Britain, and New Zealand). It’s possible there’s a deal with Israel or Germany, but if it’s any of the above, it puts a crimp in US national security in the long haul, and gives Russia the opportunity to learn how the US and our allies are gathering particular types of intel.

This has long term consequences, and none of them are good.

Shit show goes international. You have to think that our allies in Europe are mortified. Stunned. Remembering how the Bush administration rammed through the war on everyone but House Saud must give them pause. And Trump talking like a chump about NATO must make them think at the highest levels about self preservation should Trump succeed in his idiocy.

Right about now, Sean Spicer is regretting starting off his tenure as Press Secretary by pissing away his credibility telling easily debunked lies about something as inconsequential as the size of the crowds at the inauguration.

That credibility would have come in handy, right about now.

I have to admit that I’m pissed off by the lack of hellfire coming from the Dems. They have nothing to lose by going full-throttle attack mode. I’m not a Democrat, but the Republicans have more or less declared themselves the enemy of my country as I see it, and of myself personally.

I would like to see Democrats become vicious, underhanded, unfair, brutal, merciless, and relentless. The GOP is by any measure a confederacy of dunces. That the Dems can’t find it in themselves to destroy it is disheartening.

Trump’s going to go batcrap insane tonight. Who leaked all this to the WaPo, Buzzfeed, and NYT? I wouldn’t be surprised if he fires people tonight, thinking that they’re the ones who leaked this critical information about a meeting with the Russian FM and Amb. Kislyak that was covered not by US media, but by TASS solely.

Trump’s entire notion of Making America Great Again keeps running headlong into the reality that Trump’s actions undermine US national security every day.

Well to be fair he did say GREAT, not SAFE, RESPECTED, TRUSTED or anything crazy like that.

OT, but my wingnut friends have been going postal over comedian Tim Allen’s latest show, “Last Man Standing,” getting canceled. Ugh. Fucking snowflakes. It wasn’t that great of a show, its ratings probably sucked, it didn’t get canned for political reasons, it isn’t censorship, STFD and STFU and grow a fucking spine.

But isn’t he due a participation trophy or something?
