The Comey Memo revelation is blowing sky-high. Watching all the news networks picking it up one by one.

I believe Comey has them.

I believe they will be released.

I believe “obstruction of justice” are three words we’ll be hearing quite a lot.

I believe I am highly, highly amused by James Comey.

For Comey, this is a case where personal revenge and his perceived duty to the country align perfectly. He will be on the war path vs. Trump. Let’s hope that the splash damage extends to the GOP Congressional enablers of Trump’s sedition.

Shameless page promotion for Birth Control Works:

New Jersey Governor Says Banning Child Marriage Would Conflict with Religious Customs

He declined to sign a bill into law that would ban child marriage (I presume marriage under the age of eighteen) across-the-board.

In my state, the age-of-majority is nineteen for marriage (without parental consent).

I don’t think Comey has to go out of his way to wage war against Trump. If this memo is any indication, he might have left several mines that the Trump White House will continue triggering.

Carried over from the last thread:

re: #445 Jack Burton

I’d say at least half of flounces that resulted in ban + delete were people leaving and going out of their way to try to make a statement or get a last word in.

Many were the “I’m mad at you please delete my account” type of posts. You don’t need your account deleted, especially don’t need to request it publicly. Just don’t use it and go away.

Well, if I was leaving a site, I would privately message the owner to delete an account, mostly so it isn’t compromised by someone else in the future.

A public “goodbye cruel world” post is more of a “look at me, I need attention”

“The Comey Memo revelation is blowing sky-high. Watching all the news networks picking it up one by one.”

I have a sense that GOPers in Congress just might have been forced to take one step toward “Sh*t or get off the pot” time. I’m thinking not only is the WH in crisis mode, GOPers in Congress are also in crisis mode since none of them are willing to go on national TV to discuss this revelation, especially since we already know how much they love being “featured” on TV spewing RW talking points.

lawhawk  May 16, 2017 • 4:53:24pm

So, Trump solved the Middle East peace process? Oh wait, he’s gotten everyone’s interests in the region to align. They all think Trump sucks and everyone knows they can play Trump because he’s a know nothing ignoramus who is all bluster and bullshit all the time.

His flacks will be on damage control the entire time he’s on his first foray out of the country. Heck, they’re already doing damage control vis a vis Israel and their statements about Trump’s excursion to Jerusalem.

They’re preemptively doing damage control.

European countries are battening down the intel community hatches, because Trump could fuck them over next.

Putin, on the other hand, is loving every minute of this. Project Chaos is enabling him to take advantage of a weakened US foreign policy to extend his own agenda.

All that said, there are still people who think that the indictments and arrests are right around the corner and that impeachment is as well.

I would wish those to be true, but the sad fact is that the GOP wont act until they’re in mortal peril and their seats are at stake. They’ll do just enough to skate along and get their agenda enacted with Trump rubber stamping whatever they put in front of him.

In fact, that’s the GOP strategy as admitted by GOP strategists.

Of course tax cuts for the rich are the only things that Congressional Republicans really care about. All along their idea has been to use Trump as a mindless tool for signing whatever GOP crap gets through Congress.

These people don’t care whether or not the Trump administration turns America and/or the rest of the world into a post-apocalypse hellscape. The only thing that matters to them is their polling numbers in their states/districts.

Well, one thing is becoming very clear today.

James Comey has some power in Washington right now. More than he probably dreamed was possible in his recent capacity.

I hope he is prepared for the attacks on his character, politics, personal life, friends an family that will be coming from the lovely wingnut media.

When he finally comes out in public and speaks before investigators, all-America will be watching. This story is growing and growing and is getting to the yuuuge proportions even The Great Donny is not prepared for.

Can Donny wait to allow this to happen or will the pressure cause him to bail?

okay… say they get some tax breaks by fucking over millions of Americans healthcare..

so what’s next?

Then is it okay to dump Trump?

I mean I get it… after Citizens United, they appear to have an endless faucet of dark cash to support their nefarious deeds/aims… is the end game to shut down Democracy? To play Lucy and forever move the football on the American public?

Do they think that there’s enough people who’ll just sit back and watch sports or the Bachelor or Dancing with the D-List stars while they go about gutting the country?

I can perhaps see it… but aren’t these guys paying attention to the people marching? The people at their Town Halls? The scathing media coverage (outside of Faux, ‘natch)?

I understand that these guys are greedy, selfish sonsofbitches… but can they really be THAT fucking stupid to think that they’ll be no repercussions?

Do they really think that Nancy Smash and Chuckie S. are ready to be all collegial if/when the pendulum swings back? I’m certainly not, I hope these fuckers have their passports and overseas bank accounts well padded/funded otherwise I expect to see them in jumpsuits for what they’ve perpetrated on our country.

I’m kind of agreeing with Buzz on the BCS that Trump isn’t going to last another year. He’s going to make a total ass of himself and ruin relations with every one of our allies on his road trip. He’s never going to be able to fix any of his problems by bullying his way through. I think he’s going to have an episode where a doctor has to be called in to sedate him, and 50 staffers are going to leak the details (if he doesn’t actually have the episode in public).

I’m guessing any serious push (besides “this is very concerning”) from the GOP to do something about this mess will come after the run-off election with John Ossoff and the special election for Rob Quist.

If they fail, my guess is the GOP will continue as if nothing is wrong, as long as they can hold back the dam.

If the GOP loses one or both of those seats, stand by. Trump’s a goner.

GA-6 might not stay in Democratic hands for long (my understanding is the district leans heavily R) but that would be a wakeup for the GOP.

The fact that GA-06 is still a statistical dead heat is probably weighing upon a lot of minds. They’ve lost roughly 20 points in six months, from Sessions with a comfortable lead to hoping that they can hold the seat with 51% of the vote. If they lose that seat, even if its a razor-thin margin, shit will get very real.

I imagine this must be a bit like what it felt like when Watergate went from “ho-hum” to “hot shit” in the immediate wake of the Saturday Night Massacre. That people could simply not process that a president would be so brazen as to fire members of his own administration in the middle of the night to try to kill an investigation that was politically inconvenient but not yet on his front lawn.

re: #165 EPR-radar

A commission is probably more difficult for the Republicans to obstruct, but as I recall the last time we had a Special Prosecutor, the entire ‘investigation’ was conducted entirely in the media (Ken Starr’s Whitewater witch hunt).

You mean like collaborating with various sleazy wingnut groups to set Clinton up with a perjury trap in a frivolous lawsuit about something (sexual harassment) they don’t even think is a thing?

re: #167 Decatur Deb

A GOP-fueled investigation will be a model of decorum.

Any GOP-only ‘investigation’ will be a cover-up. Both House and Senate intelligence committees have proved that.

A special prosecutor or special commission is only worth talking about if it is exactly 50/50 between Republicans and Democrats (with no ringers like Manchin to confuse the count). So it would have to be a commission because that’s impossible for any single person.

PhillyPretzel  May 16, 2017 • 6:08:12pm

I just came back from a very long day at the polls. It was a very light turn-out. The five divisions that are in my polling place did not break 100 people each. Even the Democratic Ward leader’s mother was shocked that we had so few people come to the polls.

A show commission that eventually clears Trump is what I expect.

That’s if things remain static and don’t continue to implode like they are. IOW, Trump is locked up in a padded room and prevented from doing or saying anything.

There is only one person that is behind the destruction of the Trump Régime, and it’s Trump himself.

If I lived anywhere near GA6 or Montana, I would be volunteering all day to drive people to the polls. (I only have a two-seat car, but every vote counts, &c)

deep purple was my favorite group growing up. I was a singer in a rock band who pretty much emulated Ian Gillian’s style as best I could. Back in the late 70’s, before CD’s became popular and all the back catalogues started getting re-released, I stumbled across a double album called “Purple Passages,” that was the first introduction I had to Deep Purple pre-Fireball. It was a lot of their Mark I lineup Tetragrammaton albums, along with one entire side of the concerto.

Siege/bunker mentality.

Trump or his cronies thinks that all this scandal will rally his supporters to his cause thinking that all of this is an attack on Trump because he’s effective at going after all the stuff that Trump claimed he’d be doing.

Trump hasn’t done anything, and has shot himself in his foot every day with all the ongoing scandals and poor judgment. But his supporters are in a bubble of anti-reality, so they might buy into this for some time.

But his “base” is not the GOP base. They are some of the GOP base but they’re not completely overlapping.

The GOP base used to be around 27% no matter what the GOP did, they had that support. Trump’s “base” is downwards of 20% (and sinking). I think the neo-nazi’s won’t leave him, nor will the misc miscreants. I think his “base” will max out at maybe 15%.

Regular Republicans, even some of the crazy ones, are leaving the GOP (See Ossoff and NE). Independents are unhappy with the GOP.

I think that bubble is shrinking.

Mrs. Fish and I got into an argument earlier tonight. I claimed that the first woman President will almost certainly be a Democrat. She kept insisting that it’s possible that the Republicans could nominate a woman. I couldn’t find any way to get through to her that the Republicans are so ingrained in patriarchal, anti-woman culture that there is no way on God’s green earth that they will ever cast a vote for a woman. She said, “Yeah, all those Republicans who didn’t vote for Trump might vote for a woman.” I tried explaining to her that there WEREN’T any Republicans that didn’t vote for Trump. It fell on deaf ears. Now, lest you think poorly of Mrs. Fish, she is not a wingnut; she just likes to play devil’s advocate.

They won’t nominate a woman, though. A woman is fundamentally unelectable to the Republican base, and we all know it.

No, I didn’t ask her. She’d probably say it’s a good idea, because she doesn’t follow politics and doesn’t understand how literally batshit crazy Bachmann is.

“I’m troubled when [Russian Foreign Minister Sergei] Lavrov is in the Oval Office,” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), waiting for his elevator in the Russell building. “I can’t imagine why he’d ever be allowed in the Oval Office.”

So. . . do you think should there be consequences, senator?

“What consequences do you think that I have?” McCain snapped, clearly frustrated. “You tell me. You are asking me what the consequences could be when you aren’t even telling me what consequences there could be. I can’t answer your question. I can’t and no one else can. I’ve been around here a long time, my friend, and if someone asked me a rational question, I would be more than happy to try to answer it.”

Later, he apologized. “I’m sorry if I’m short with you.”

If Palin was a sane person, she could have run for the presidency in 2012 after serving a full term as Alaskan governor (doesn’t mean she would have won, caeteris paribus). But she’s not sane, showed it to the whole fucking world, and dat’s dat.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It’s true in science, it’s true in news.

Being so careless to make a mistake on a fundamental part of the story? That’s a huge red flag when it comes to assessing the rest of it.

Everyone is going to evaluate a source differently but my standards are very high especially when it’s a source that’s claiming things that I’d like to be true. Confirmation bias and wish fulfillment are strong forces in our subconscious. It’s easy to let standards slip because you want to believe. You have to consciously be on your guard to avoid that.

Given the volume of lawsuits pointed at Fox News and Fox Business right now, I’m sure the Murdoch clan would love it.

And on the lighter side of the news, the LA Unified School District is having runoff elections for two seats.

Primary election, District 4:

Steve Zimmer Incumbent 46.70% 45,088
Nick Melvoin 32.90% 31,771
Allison Holdorff Polhill 13.99% 13,510
Gregory Martayan 6.41% 6,189

After the primary, “Zimmer was endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). In a statement, Sanders said, “Billionaires should not make a profit off of public school children. That’s why I’m supporting Steve Zimmer and Imelda Padilla for the Los Angeles School Board. They will fight against the Trump/DeVos agenda to destabilize and undermine public schools.” It was the first time since 1989 that a U.S. senator endorsed a candidate in the school board race, according to LA School Report.”

Runoff so far:

Group glued 120 toilet plungers to an Omaha street to show what a protected bike lane could do. The lane in question has had multiple car-bike wrecks.

The Public Works Department in Omaha removed them as a road hazard about an hour later.

With pictures (and more on the article):
omaha.com (goes to the Omaha World-Herald)

One of the advocates, Stuart Nottingham, said he and seven fellow cyclists stuck the reflective tape-wrapped plungers to painted bike lane lines to demonstrate that protected bike lanes would slow traffic and make the street safer for everybody who uses it.

“The plan was to leave them out for 36 hours so people could see what a protected bike lane could do,” Nottingham said.

Such lanes use some sort of barrier, such as posts, curbs or planters, to separate cars and bikes. They’ve been appearing across the country, including in Lincoln, but not yet in Omaha.

Nikki Haley is committing political suicide defending the Trump Régime. That’s a résumé enhancement in the GOP.

Nikki Haley is a dumbass who, for reason, people give way too much credit. Oh, and you can blame Sarah Palin for Nikki’s initial rise—she was going nowhere in her quest for the governorship until Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods came down to campaign for her. Then Nikki’s star really rose. She is totally full of shit; most of her “life” stories are bogus/exaggerated; many skeletons in her closet, but she seems to skate right away from them.

So, I guess what I’m saying is—she’ll probably be the first woman president—hope I’m not around to see it.

I think Frum is making obvious something that lots of people aren’t thinking about, but are probably going “yeah, duh” afterwards. I think it needed to be said. It should be something asked of every Republican: “You’ve waited so long to do anything that you’ve made this about you, not Trump. Why are YOU willing to let this go on?”

Allegedly this is part of an external PR give-and-take between Laurence O’Donnell and MSNBC brass. Brian Steinberg of Variety has nearly the exact opposite story out there.

I’d be less worried about Comcast and more worried about the overt Republican propagandists at Sinclair Broadcast Group and their coveted takeover of Tribune Broadcasting, including WGN, WPIX and KTLA. Altji Pai will give that the biggest rubber stamp of all time, because they’re Sinclair, and you’re not.

I’ve always wondered if Frum has actually ever MET a Republican. Remember, the tome he wrote “Why Romney Lost” posited:

WHY ROMNEY LOST is a forthright analysis that offers a bold, hopeful plan for Republican success in the years ahead. David Frum urges a Republican party that is culturally modern, economically inclusive, and environmentally responsible - a party that can meet the challenges of the Obama years and lead a diverse America to a new age of freedom and prosperity.

Yeah, good luck with that Frummy.

Sinclair’s audience for the rightwing propaganda they are inserting into local news is vastly larger than the Fox News audience.
