Existence of Comey Memo About Trump Asking Him to Drop the Flynn Investigation Is Confirmed

And he’s going to testify

The drums of impeachment are getting louder, as the existence of James Comey’s memo is confirmed, describing Donald Trump’s request for him to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn’s dealings with Russia.

Several media outlets, including The Post, quickly confirmed the existence of these notes. From Devlin Barrett, Ellen Nakashima and Matt Zapotosky: “Comey’s account of the February talk made it clear that his understanding of the conversation was that the president was seeking to impede the investigation … Comey’s notes also made it clear he felt that the conversation with the president was improper and decided to withhold details of it from the case agents working on the Russia probe. According to the director’s notes, Comey did not respond directly to the president’s entreaties, only agreeing with Trump’s assertion that Flynn ‘is a good guy.’”

An F.B.I. agent’s contemporaneous notes are widely held up in court as credible evidence of conversations,” Michael Schmidt notes on the front page of the Times. “Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information … Mr. Trump then turned the discussion to Mr. Flynn.”

[…]

Here is the bottom line: Comey is going to testify, and Congress is going to get his full memo. It’s not a question of if – but when.

The Trump admin’s current position: Trump was just joking when he told Comey to stop the investigation.

The memo is a lie, not direct evidence, NO TAPES! Hah!

DT has bragged about having tapes and an FBI director’s memo can be accepted in court.

DT didn’t do anything wrong. Just “hoped” Flynn could be treated nicely. No obstruction, shutup libtard! How come Comey didn’t come forward to begin with? Who leaked this memo!?!?! Comey is real obstructor!!!

The Trump admin’s current position: Trump was just joking when he told Comey to stop the investigation.

Then firing him when he didn’t stop it was just a prank. Also, Trump listing his own assessment of the investigation as a hoax as being the foremost thought in his mind when he finally decided to fire Comey, that was just for lols. And divulging beyond five eyes compartmental classified info belonging to Israel to Lavrov & Kislyak in the Oval Office, just locker room talk.

Because Trump just saying it didn’t really mean much as long as Comey could ignore it. After firing Comey, though, it’s evidence that the firing was more than “He didn’t prosecute Hillary.”

Matthew Miller:

“…I keep wondering — something in the back of my head keeps saying to me — maybe Comey was actually trying to build an obstruction-of-justice case against the president here. You know what I mean? Because Comey could handle this one of two ways: The president makes this request, and the first time Comey might say to him, ‘You know, Mr. President, it’s inappropriate for us to have this conversation, and I would appreciate if you would not make a request like this to me again.’ That’s a way to handle it that says very clearly to the president that this should never be repeated.

But if you’re trying to build an obstruction-of-justice case, you might want the president to keep talking, because everything he does is digging a deeper legal hole for himself.”

I saw a comment on this yesterday. By itself, asking him if he could just drop the Flynn investigation is bad, but easily enough laughed off as a joke - though, seriously, asking everyone else to leave the room so he can tell Comey a joke?

BUT, add that to firing Comey, and then telling Lester Holt on tape that he was thinking about the Russia investigation while he considered it? Devastating. Obstructive.

Trump is destroying himself even with every conceivable advantage — fair or unfair — handed to him on a silver platter.

IMO, the GOP rank-and-file as of right now will still not convict him, assuming that the threat of impeachment (driven almost entirely by frightened party donors) forces his hand.

Now, let’s assume that Trump is given the order to resign, and he refuses to accept that order. It’s possible; he’s enough of an alpha male to refuse. What then?

Trump’s Russian Laundry is still running.

Four St. Martin real estate agents told The Washington Post that the $28 million price tag far outstrips the amount that sellers are getting for the most exclusive properties on the Caribbean island, where the market is still rebounding from the 2008 banking crisis.

Owners of the most luxurious homes on the market are asking $15 million to $17 million, agents said. A 10-bedroom hillside estate on a lot adjacent to Chateau des Palmiers is for sale for $4.75 million.

Meanwhile, this came in under the radar - but apparently it’s real easy to crack Trump resorts/properties’ wifi, enabling anyone to snoop, or worse, hack the networks to gain access to potentially critical info.

In fact, this is a whole lot worse than those pesky Clinton emails.

Trump’s Wifi was (and is?!) easily exploitable, opening the door to being compromised.

OK, so The Trump Organization is likely grifting their patrons and/or cooking the books on what they actually do with funds identified security. But, I’m sure there are hordes of trustworthy government employees whose sole purpose is to provide secure networks for the president and admin. And, who do not allow any devices they touch to access non-secure networks.

It’s good to have LGF to temper the confirmation bias a bit.

I was lucky enough to see a ton of confirmation bias in action, vicariously, by hanging out on a forum full of Conservatives back in the 2000s. I’d see news come out that got a few people to say, “If this is true, that’s BAD!”, and a lot of others to shut up completely.

Then someone would stumble across the flimsiest of reasons why it was okay, and a wave of palpable relief would wash over them. All was right with the world again.

After seeing this happen several times, I read an article on Confirmation Bias, and the effects of cognitive dissonance, how hearing news that’s bad for your side makes you literally uncomfortable, triggering the amygdala, but that even the thinnest, least plausible mitigating information would turn off the amygdala and trigger the pleasure center.

Then I experienced it myself. I read something, I forget what. I could FEEL the anxiety building. Then I read a shitty argument that I immediately found comforting. I was able to recognize what had happened, so from now on, I try to remember to ask myself whether something I’m tempted to believe is believable ON ITS FACE, or is it just that I WANT it to be true.

Spousal Unit and i were talking about how the heck to pry Trump from office last night.

Easiest way is for him to resign. But with his narcissism, he won’t resign without a way to not only save face, but come out looking like he’s better than everyone else.

Spouse said pleading illness, i said, “Nope, he’d be saying he’s physically weak. He won’t do it.”

Resignation under threat of impeachment won’t work. He thinks he did nothing wrong.

I said, “He’s got to be convinced that, as a businessman, he is too good for “broken Washington” and they don’t deserve his unique brilliance. That HE is rejecting THEM. Then let him rant on the way out about how horribly he’s been treated and flounce off. Oh, and someone needs to remind him he’ll always be a U.S. President, he’s done it, name in the book*, now it’s time to move on to a place where he is truly appreciated….back to the business world.”

That’s the path to get him out with as little damage as possible.

*As the worst president in history, but no one needs to tell him that.

Timothy Watson  May 17, 2017 • 1:24:17pm
An unnamed Richmond business walked away with a nearly $500,000 payout from city taxpayers at the end of March in a maneuver finance officials suspect was aimed at intentionally gaming state tax law for profit.

Some tax experts say the allegation sounds farfetched, but city finance officials are not the first in the state to believe a company might be taking advantage of the tax code to cash in at the expense of taxpayers.

Here’s how it works: State code requires a locality to pay the same interest rate on over payments as it charges on delinquent payments. The city, like most localities, sets that rate at a relatively high number - 10 percent - to discourage late payments.

But unlike real estate and personal property taxes, many of the local taxes assessed on businesses are based on self-reported earnings. Meaning if a business were to over report its earnings and later request a refund, it could get that money back plus 10 percent - an outstanding return in today’s market.

“If somebody could legally think of a way to get a guaranteed 10 percent, why wouldn’t you do it?” said Glen Frost, a tax attorney based in Maryland who practices in northern Virginia. “Especially with the uncertainty of the market right now, I’d put that down.”

Because the people on the packaging cheat. They count a GB as a billion bytes rather than 2^30 bytes.

In other news, we now know who has never really looked at their hard drive capacities before.

Never buy Sandisk. They store their proprietary software off of the main storage. You can reformat, and the moment you stick it in a Windows machine, it reinstalls their software.

This. They (and by ‘they’ I mean *every* manufacturer of storage) intentionally or lazily confuse decimal and binary definitions of billion/giga, and readily admit it. Apple has a whole paragraph on explaining why this is the case on iPhones and why you supposedly shouldn’t care. They use weak pretzel logic to make it seem like regardless of which definition is used its the same size, which is demonstrably bullshit.

I have a measly 6-core processor downstairs. When I update my linux box to latest, it recompiles packages from source… which pegs all six cores to the wall, sometimes for hours.

As an aside, Jesus F—ing Christ, what I wouldn’t give for that much storage space. I really need to start upgrading my hard drives.

Heh, lived in a house like that once.
the vacuum would trip the breaker depending on where you plugged it in.

We didn’t have breakers, but IIRC we never blew a fuse. I suspect the fuses had higher current capacity than the actual wiring.

President Obama at the Coast Guard Academy in 2015: “That’s why confronting climate change is now a key pillar of American global leadership. When I meet with leaders around the world, it’s often at the top of our agenda — a core element of our diplomacy. And you are part of the first generation of officers to begin your service in a world where the effects of climate change are so clearly upon us. Well, last time I drove through The Richmond, the place was still standing.

I remember it fondly - big, 6 burner O’keefe and Merritt gas stove in the kitchen, crown moldings, big, wide 5-window bay window across the front, with a view all the way to the Oakland hills. Shook like crazy when buses went by on the cross street….

We must remind ourselves that Clarke won in elections.

Strong-man law and order types are always successful, as they know how to play on the fears of people.

Also, Clarke runs as a Democrat.

When was he last reelected? And when would he be up for reelection next?

I was just bidding on an item on Ebay. The amazing thing to me is how few people seem to know how this shit works.

Some schmo put in 9 bids over the course of the last 30 minutes, first trying to exceed another bidder by upping his bid by a couple bucks at a time, then putting in his final bid of $67 about 30 seconds before the close.

In the last 4 seconds, two other bidders and I sniped at $107, $150, and something over $152.50.

That’s how it goes - there’s a lot of inconsequential action for a week, then the last 4 seconds decide it. It’s not even a bidding war, because the 3 of us probably used a sniping service - you set your maximum bid and the delay before the end, and then you walk away, and wait till you find out. You win, or you don’t. But you don’t let yourself get into a bidding war.
