Carried over from the last thread because I was away for awhile, about tornadoes and hiding under viaducts to avoid them:

re: #318 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Pretty much. Even if it didn’t increase the wind speeds, it still blocks the highway - people will start parking and climbing up 5 or 10 minutes before the tornado might arrive and it creates a cascade effect, plus blocks the roads for emergency crews.

You see it a lot in some of the more modern videos of chases, and that’s before we really got into the chasing-as-reality-show phenomenon that …well, let’s just say this is not one of those “filled with glory” chapters.

Also, if the viaduct is knocked off it’s pylons by a tornado, everyone under it is crushed. Moreover, tornado-driven debris under a viaduct which acts like a wind tunnel will pummel people with two hundred mph moving debris, severely injuring them or killing them.

That senate seat has such a weird history. Paul Wellstone won the seat in 1990, but then died in a plane crash 11 days before the 2002 election. The MN DFL drafted vice-prez Walter Mondale into the race and there was one pretty remarkable debate before MN chose shit weasel Coleman for the seat. My hope is that the entire Evil Bullshit Empire; Republicans, religious right quacks, Russian stooge conspiracy media, MLM pseudoscience, etc; is about to collapse in a massive heap of cultural wreckage. What are the chances? Slim, but more than zero, at least in terms of national political importance.
There is a precedent for a quack movement disintegrating with breathtaking speed just as it reached the height of its power and influence: the 1920s Ku Klux Klan. In 1925, the Klan boasted 6 million members. Then the most powerful Klan leader, DC Stephenson of Indiana, was convicted in a sensational murder and kidnapping case. Membership went into freefall. By 1930, it was down to 30,000 nationwide. The national organization was formally abolished in `1944 after it could not pay back taxes, to be replaced by a menagerie of local and regional Klans that seem to flit in and out of existence like so many biting gnats.

Great detailed reporting from my regional newspaper just now:

Jury finds white Oklahoma police officer not guilty in fatal shooting of unarmed black man (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

The headline literally has more words than the article.

Yep. The guy really thought being President would be just like running his trashy company. I hope Trump forever puts aside the myth that the country and government need to be run like a business.

Unfortunately, it won’t do that. “They” will just say Trump was a repeated failure in business and ran a private company and that the CEO of a successful public company would clearly know how to run this country.

OT: My backyard grass was all the way up to my hips (thanks, rain). I was out of here earlier because I was out with the scythe trying to cut my lawn down to size.

A neighbour came by asking what I was doing, I told her “I’m looking for the asparagus.” (I brought in a whole bunch of asparagus. Bacon-wrapped asparagus in the air fryer tomorrow.)

Steve King (R-acist) has been awfully quiet on Twitter lately. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him weigh in on the Tulsa police shooting of an unarmed African-American though; that’s right up his white pointy hood.

One reason the Stephenson case was so destructive to Klan was that Stephenson kept a “dead man file” that detailed Klan bribes to Indiana officials. He openly threatened the court with these files during his trial. The files duly fell into the hands of the press, resulting in a massive wave of corruption trials and resignations. Crooked pols all over the country duly took note and cut off all contact with the organization. The similarity to Russiagate is striking.

My understanding is there is a complaint before the Alabama Bar by a number of that state’s lawyers demanding his license to practice law be stripped because he lied under oath to Congress.

That would be one way to get rid of the unreconstructed Confederate: losing his law license. I’m guessing the DC Bar wouldn’t be likely to recommend another license for him.

With the legion Trumpers (CCJ?) going to work on Mueller, I would not put it past them to come up with some story that convinces Trump that he has “cause” to fire Mueller.

I wouldn’t be so sure: if the Pres can fire the SP for “good cause” or “misconduct” , I can’t imagine even the Trump White House being so bereft of legal resources that somebody there couldn’t cobble up some sort of bullshit excuse for Trump (or Sessions) to give Mueller the boot, if they REALLY thought it necessary. But only, IMO, if they thought Congress truly would have their backs.

How this for a happy thought (seen elsewhere)?

Mueller can subpoena Trump’s taxes.

I have the distinct feeling that when he starts to subpoena Trump’s financial records it will be the trigger for a Saturday Night Massacre event where Mueller gets axed by Sessions at Trump’s behest, recusal notwithstanding. McConnell and Ryan won’t step in because both are so confident that they can maintain congressional control that they don’t fear any blowback at all. Maintaining absolute and unquestioned power is the only goal.

The Secular Coalition of America sent me an E-mail noting that groups of ex-Muslims on Facebook, along with atheists, are being shut down by Facebook due to Christians and Muslims abusing the Facebook reporting system.

From that E-mail (it’s rather long):

EXMNA (Ex-Muslims of North America) needs you to sign their petition urging Facebook to protect free expression on their platform. The petition contains two simple requests that will help ensure ex-Muslims, atheists, and other vulnerable voices are protected on social media. The petition asks that Facebook:
1. Create a list for Facebook Groups and Facebook Pages which are determined as vulnerable to malicious attacks. Reports and flags aimed at them should not be handled by automated mechanisms but reviewed and given due consideration by a trained Facebook employee.
2. Penalize individual accounts and Facebook Groups which are found to have been repeatedly abusing its reporting system.
